Thursday Lightroom Palooza!

Lots of Lightroom stuff today:
- I did a little video clip to give readers some insights into my new Lightroom book (what makes it different, the format, etc.) and the cool thing is my Web dept. embedded the video right within a static banner so you can watch it right on the same page (it works cooler than it sounds). So, to watch it, go to PlanetPhotoshop.com, then you’ll see the square banner on the right side of the page, and it has a button on it called “Watch Video Intro.” Click that button, and you don’t go to a different page—the video clip plays right there. Check it out.
- Saw this post in the Canon digital photography forum, about a NAPP member who just got his first issue of “Darkroom” (our new magazine for Adobe Lightroom users). Read his post here.
- The Los Angeles stop for my new Lightroom Tour was sold out, but yesterday we contacted the LA Convention Center, and they were able to move us to a larger room, so we can now comfortably accommodate more people. We’ll have nearly 700 people for the seminar, which just gives you an idea of how popular Lightroom has become, even though version 1.0 is just over a month or so old. I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone there! (By the way, the next steop for my Lightroom Tour is in Boston, Mass. For details, or to register, click here.)
- I’ve been getting emails all week from people who have received my new Lightroom book from Amazon.com, which is big relief to me (thanks to everybody for being so patient). Anyway, as an author, I can tell you there is nothing authors want more than to get our books in the hands of readers, so I can tell you all those emails really made my day.

Scott, is the Lightroom tour coming to NYC/NJ????
Hi Sam:
Yup—it sure is. We’re working on the dates right now but we definitely becoming to New York shortly. As soon as I have the date, I’ll post it here on the blog. Hope I’ll see you there!

Do you know if the Lightroom tour will make it to Dallas, TX? Just got your new Lightroom book. Great BOOK! Thanks
Reading your book (which is really fun to read. Your style makes it work!) and I had a question. In the past, all the advice I read and heard was that we should never delete our RAW files (NEF for me), as we should look at them as the same as film negatives. Well, I notice you now suggest in your book, and others are saying the same, that if you Import your files as DNG files, then you can, and apparently should, delete the originals. I realize everyone has a lot of faith in the future of DNG, but I still worry about deleting my originals. Hasn’t the change to DNG actually changed the file?
Anyway, just wondering. As you can tell, I’m a bit obsessed with backups. I have three hard drives whirling around plus two DVD copies and ….. Get a life, Howard!
Thanks.
Thanks for the update scott. Just got your Lr book at borders over my lunch break, and so far it seems to be great. I’m mostly looking for something I can skim for tips and tricks and then pass off to my friends who are thinking about moving to DSLRs.

Scott, I have Photoshop 7.0 and tried to follow your ‘Tipsfor Shooting Panoramas, Part 3′ on page 84 of your book “The Digital Photography Book”. Under step two you show an option to select “Photomerge” under the ‘automate’ within the file menu. I don’t have an option “Photomerge” listed. Do I need to upgrade my cppy of Photoshop?
Thanks,
Gordon Jenkins
Hi Scott:
Just wanted to let you know that after finishing reading your book titled
“The Digital Photography Book” I will be either be selling my Canon 20D for a regular point & shoot or I’ll be throwing it in the pond behind my house.
Nothing on your part. The book was great but after taking shot after shot of blurry, underdeveloped, overexposed crappy photos I have finally given up.
I have a ProMaster external flash which does everything but flash when I take a pic. When using Av aperture mode on the camera I get totally confused with things blinking and all kinds of BS. No matter what I do the shots are delayed like a long exposure and it’s evern worse when I have the camera on mirror lock as I have to hit the button twice. It just sits there until it finally clicks to reveal a nice blurry shot…I have read book after book and still cannot take a nice photo…this is for the birds…thanks but no thanks…Screw Photoshop & all the other BS…What happenned to just taking a nice photo???
Scott, thanks for the update on your Lightroom book. I have been anticipating its release at Amazon. I notice they show it as not being released yet. Are they still filling preorders? I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy. I should’ve gone to Boston….
Keep up the awesome work!
Hi Gordon:
Here’s the thing: it doesn’t work with Photoshop 7. They hadn’t introduced PhotoMerge yet (that’s why it’s not visible under the Automate menu). It’s time to upgrade, my friend—-you’ll be glad you did, and not just for PhotoMerge.

Hi there,
I finally received your book from Amazon UK. It took time, but it’s a great read. I’m afraid though that it contains a mistake (or else I misunderstood everything) which made me jump, because it seemed to cover the feature I miss most in Lightroom. I’m talking about the multiple keyword selection in step 18 of page 12. Opt-click will narrow down the search you write. If only it did! But it does not have any effect. Cmd-click will select several non-adjacent keywords, but like in an OR search, so no narrowing down…
Thanks fof yet another great book.
Christopher
Hi Scott,
Love the work you and NAPP does for us..I just put up my first web galleries using lightroom. Althought they where easy to do they load very slowly once at on the server. A number of people have expericed this problem and let me know. I then reload a site with only 10 images and it’s the same story. I call Adobe support and the tech I spoke said he heard this but no fix. Help please
Hi Scott,
On page 73 you say that you don’t quite like keywords sets. But could it be because you haven’t seen that you can apply them with a keyboard shortcut: press the option key, and you can type a number from 1 to 9 to apply them.
Cheers,
Christopher
Any chance you can answer Joseph Schembri’s question – It’s listed above dated April 30, 2007. Why isn’t there a response? What gives?
I’m in the process of putting up my site and contemplating whether or not to use Lightroom.
Thank you.
Ciao for now! Carol (from Rhode Island)
