My Lightroom 1.1 Update Kit is Up!

By Scott on Friday, June 29th, 2007 at 8:27 am | updates.

updatekit.jpg

Yippie! It’s up!!! (I guess it actually went up yesterday, but I didn’t get the exact URL for the download until this morning. Sorry ’bout that).

Remember: this update was created exclusively for people who actually own my book “The Lightroom Book for Digital Photographers” and I created this 1.1 Update Kit as an added benefit for those specific people (whom I dearly love, by the way).

To download my Lightroom 1.1 Update Kit, go to Peachpit.com/register and enter the 10-digit ISBN number found on the back of the book. Once you do that, to download the book it’s going to ask you a simple question that, if you own the book, you’ll be able to easily answer (a sample question might be something like, “On page 12, what’s the first word in paragraph two?” That’s not the question, but it’s that easy.).

If you don’t have the book yet, you can pick it up at your local bookstore, or online from Barnes&Noble.com, or Amazon.com.  Of course, once you get the book, then you can download my 1.1 Update Kit as well.

So, I hope you enjoy my 1.1 Update Kit, and I know you’re going to enjoy Lightroom 1.1. :-)

Now, for some quick news:

  • If you have a digital camera, make sure you check out this week’s episode of “The Digital Photography Show” Podcast, as Scott and Michael talk with an expert from Penn Camera on how to clean your digital camera’s sensor. It’s a terrific walk-though of how to blow, brush and wipe that dust away. The rep from Penn does a great job of demystifying the process and debunking some of the myths out there about sensor cleaning, and they talk about specific products and how to use them. Here’s the direct link.
  • We’re getting incredible feedback on Corey Barker’s new online training course on Photoshop Channels. If you’ve ever wanted to unlock the power of Photoshop’s Channels features, make sure you check out Corey’s 21-day online course (remember, it’s just five minutes a day). Don’t forget: NAPP members get a BIG discount on taking the course. It’s over at PhotoshopTraining.com
  • I’m off to the Bahamas today for some “meetings at sea” with a bunch of our staff (I love my job). We’ve sneaking in a photo shoot while we’re in Nassau and shooting with me will be Matt, Corey, Dave, Larry Becker, and friends. We’ll probably do some sort of shoot while we’re down here (seeing as our new Photoshop TV studio isn’t done yet). Should be lot of fun (and a little bit of work).

Have a great weekend, mon! :-)

Scott’s posted link takes you to a user registration, which you need to set up before you register your copy of the book. After you do that, click on “My Account” and then on the link “Manage Registered Books” (http://www.peachpit.com/bookstore/register.asp).

    Hi Scott,

I would just like to say thank you for providing an update. I proves once again what a great guy you are and why we should all buy your books.

Wonder if you can help or if anyone else is having issues. After upgrading to 1.1 yesterday, now I cannot use lightroom as my default program to open jpeg files. I have the Windows version, running Vista Ultimate. It was the default for jpeg in version 1.0 Now even after trying to re-associated it to be the default program, it still won’t show up in the list of available programs, even after browsing to the lightroom folder and choosing the executable. Any thoughts guys?

Thanks! I really appreciate the free update for your book. It slightly caught me off guard when I opened Lightroom 1.1, and saw the different interface.

    Thanks again!

    Jeff:
Once you register as a member or log in, you will be given an area to enter the book’s ISBN, then some optional questions, then the security question. Once the book is registered, you’ll see a listing for it — to the right of that, there’s an area that says, “Access to protected content for this book”. Clicking there brings you to the link for the PDF.

Since it sounds like you already registered, try going to the “My Account” section, and there’s an area where you can click a link to register a book. That will bring you to the ISBN entry point also.

I seem to have the same problem as Jeff has; I registered with Peachpit, answered the optional questions (no secret question by the way) and registered my copy. I did receive a 35% off coupon but no mention of “Protected content”. I tried registering with another account but with the same result…

    Debbie,

On my copy of the book there are in fact 2 ISBN numbers given. Not quite sure why this is but there you have it. My two numbers either start off with 978-0-321-xxx or 0-321-xxx. In my case I entered the second of the two and this worked just fine.

    Scott -

Not only is your Lightroom 1.1 Update Kit filled with essential information, but it is also elegantly layed out and well thought out, with the old (1.0) feature on the left side of the horizontal 8 .5 x 11 page, and the new (1.1) on the right. Thanks for such a substantial and useful hand-out. Lightroom 1.1 has many improvements, and you have made them quick and easy to learn (complete with your usual leavening of Kelby-babble).

Your process for acquiring the Lightroom 1.1 update is totally ineffective — it has taken me around in circles for the past half-hour and I have been unable to get to any place where I can actually download the update, even after having followed the process outline above. It is almost as though you do not want anyone to be able to download it. It’s the last time I will buy any of your books or patronize Peachpit Press or whoever is responsible for this idiocy.

Scott, thanks so much for the update. I read the book and am now going back through using it as a tutorial. I’ve ordered two of your other books, too, as your style of presenting material is so clear and useful, in fact the best I’ve ever seen. I have one question I can’t find an answer to anywhere. Although when I upgraded to Lightroom 1.1, most of my settings in 1.0 transferred, I can’t find the Collections I’d created. Do you know where they might be hiding out or do I need to re-create them?

I had a similar going-around-in-circles experience to Rodger’s above, but eventually I landed on a page called “My Registered Books” - following a tip further above - and clicked on the link “access to protected content.” That takes you to a page with a link to the pdf file and to Scott’s update. They could have made this easier with fewer steps, and they could have listed the steps more clearly. Maybe next time.

Oh, get over yourself John. Geez, he didn’t even have to develop and offer the update but he did. Scott’s books are always top notch as you must be aware. So it’s not the greatest process getting the update - big deal.

John… as many of us have downloaded the update (with no problem), perhaps it is something of a user error (you). Instead of threatening to never by one of Scott’s books again, try and remedy the problem and stop acting like a juvenile. If you feel more comfortable doing the equivalent of throwing yourself on the floor and kicking your feet… by all means, knock yourself out. In the mean time, those of us that showed a little bit of perseverance will be enjoying the added content!

    Scott,

Thanks so much for the FREE update to your book!

Love the layout in the PDF, but just one suggestion…

Would it have been so tough on the “The Original Lightroom 1.0″ side of the page to make a reference to which pages it appears on in your book? That way I can make a note in the book to refer to your update PDF instead of wasting my time on old info…

    Thanks again (seriously!)

Scott - Thanks yet again for the update. Curious though, I just noticed the book is available as an ebook. Is the content identical between the print version and ebook version? Also, would owning the ebook have given me an isbn number to download the update? I think i’d prefer ebooks in the future if the content is the same) thanks!

    Dear Scott,
After 20 years as a romance illustrator and being the mother of 5 children i have finally gotten into photography and fallen in love with it! I’ve read almost all your books anid have gotten particularly hooked on the digital photography one. i just have a couple of questions for you-since I’ve been asked to do my first wedding and am terrified. i went out and bought a Canon 20D (since it was one of the cameras recommended in your book) but I want to know why you preferr Nikon over Canon? Secondly, how do you get that warm glow in the portrait of a bride and her father (again from the same book)?

PLEASE HELP… I have successfully downloaded the PDF update to your book (many thanks) but still am not understanding how to copy photos from my laptop used in the field to be included in my Catalog on my desktop (I am PC based). My problem is the Apple screengrabs for Combining Libraries (Catalogs) do not match my PC dialog boxes and I am lost (booooo).

Is this a 2 step process–Export and Import or not? If I move them to my desktop using Windows Explorer and then import within Lightroom 1.1, does the metadata (keywords, captions, etc.) move also????

I bought your book (The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Book) after reading on this blog that a PDF is available from Peachpit that provides update information on Lightroom ver 1.1. I have now registered the book — ISBN and answered the question — at Peachpit, but cannot access the 1.1 PDF update. I get a message that “This promotion is no longer available.”

    Hi Scott,

I successfully downloaded the update for your book and the Adobe book by Martin Evening. I have a full G5 primary drive and my laptop is full also. I wanted to print the update front and back (as printing at home was pitiful and I could not read the text). Staples prints pdfs and binds them and then I take the “book” with me. I did this with my Nikon manual which was copyrighted but available for printing on the Nikon web site (asia site I think). Anyway. I failed six times ruining six CDRs for two very small files. Is there any way you can provide a printed version or allow us to print this. I am poor and need to learn Lightroom. I would like to buy the training by Matt K. but can’t do it till cash flow permits. I cannot even buy upgrade to CS3 until I get caught up on money. I won’t be able to attend Photoshop World. So your little upgrade is my out on how to untangle a pitiful mess my Lightroom files are in. I don’t no where to start. I had to drag folders to external hard drives and these now are taking up space but only give me ? marks. I cannot get the find command in Library to locate which place the original folder resided. I also had things on my laptop and brought them into Lightroom by importing on flash media to desktop folder. Then with error message that my hard drive had no more memory I was forced to drag all lightroom folders system images prior to Lightroom…to external hard drives. I don’t know how many duplicate files I have. I think a lot. Please advise re: printing the update. I cannot sit at a computer to read a book and compare it to a real book for changes.

Thanks for the update. I too had problems finding the link (which you will find on your account page where your book/s are listed). It would be more logical to put the link on the downloads tab for the specific web page for that particular book. Does Scott know anything about website accessibility? Maybe Peachpit Press should commission him to write a book about it and then get their own designers to read it…
BTW Scott’s books are excellent - I first purchased the Photoshop 7 Book for Digital Photographers and found it so much easier to follow than other books (one of which claimed to be a bible on the subject). I now recommend his books to all my students on Photoshop or Digital Camera courses.
    Keep up the good work!

    Hi Scott,

This is probably the wrong place to put this but it’s something about your book that’s bugging me and I can’t find anywhere else to contact you about it.

I was really puzzled to get to page 337 and see you suggest buying songs from iTunes for a commercial presentation. It’s a great idea to buy the wedding song and like you say 99c (or rather more here in the UK) is “a pretty small investment for the impact it adds to your slideshow”. What puzzles me is that the iTunes copyright clauses expressly forbids this kind of use. No commercial use of the tune is permitted and syncing to a slideshow (even if you’re not using it to sell pictures!) is usually classed as a commercial use.

I know lots of photographers don’t really care about other people’s copyright (though seem pretty hot on their own) and use commercial tunes and I know that licensing a major artist’s song is a practically impossible but it was quite a shock to see you advocating this in a best selling book.

    What am I missing?

Thank you for providing the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Book 1.1 update to your book. I have found it to be very intuitive. Now that adobe has released the lightroom 1.2 when will we see another update to the book ver. 1.2?

In your book “The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Book on pg. 380 you say “Darkroom magazine is sent free to all U.S. NAPP members, along with their issue of Photoshop User magazine. However, if you’re not a NAPP member, you can buy a downloadable eVersion of the magazine at www.darkroommagazine.com I am having a hard to locating this magazine on the website. thank you

    Scott,

Thanks so much for the FREE update to your book!

Love the layout in the PDF, but just one suggestion…

Would you have the number of the pages for “The Original Lightroom 1.0″ side of the page to make a reference to which pages it appears on in your book?
That way I can make a note in the book to refer to your update PDF instead of wasting my time on old info…

    Thanks again (seriously!)

Scott thanks for all of you insight and tips. I have used your printing templates in lightroom and would like to make some other ones, but cant modif the ones in lightroom. So how do you make them and how do you get them back in to lightroom? I tried Illustrator, it did not work. So any help I thank you for it. Thanks Bob Ogle

I can’t access your 1.1 update because Peachtree wants to know what device the woman on p. 122, step 15 is holding. I have no clue, other than she is listening to something. Peachtree won’t let me on their site. Kindly help me out here.
