Good morning everybody. Here we go:
- First up: we’re expecting my new book, “The Photoshop CS3 Book for Digital Photographers” (shown above) to hit bookstores this week!!! If you haven’t ordered yours yet, you can order it now over at Barnes & Noble.com or Amazon.com, or you can find it in bookstores by this weekend.
- Larry Becker let me know that there’s a $100 rebate on Epson P-3000 units (those way cool photo viewing/photo storage units), and you can get the unit, and the rebate, over at B&H Photo. Here’s the link with the details (by the way, I have one of these which I use for backing up on location, and then seeing if I “got the shot” while still out on location. Once you have one—you’ll wonder how you lived without it).
- Remember last week when I mentioned that Stephanie Shimerdla over at Obsidian Dawn was going to create some custom brush sets just for NAPP members? Well, good news: the first set has been posted and they’re available for free download from the NAPP member Website.
- A buddy of mine was just asking me if there’s an easy way for him to get his many thousands of slides converted over to digital, (he’s all digital now and those slides are just sitting in boxes doing nothing). I told him it’s time to buy a slide scanner, block out a few weeks, and get to work. Well, as luck would have it, I ran across a new service today that will do the “dirty work” for him (or you), at a pretty reasonable price (starting at about .19¢ per 3,000 dpi slide scan). It’s called ScanCafe, and for all the details click here.
- If you’ve got a second, check out the work of NAPP member Joan West, who took the stretched-pixel effect (like the one I’ve been teaching in my Down & Dirty Tricks Session at Photoshop World) and did a very clever layout that combines the stretched version of the photo with an inset version of the same photo still in tact. It looks very cool. Click here to see her member portfolio (you don’t have to be a member to view her portfolio).
- The prestigious Lepp Institute of Digital Imaging is offering NAPP members a 15% discount to attend any of their workshops. Click here to see their schedule of upcoming workshops (including workshops from Ben Willmore and Fay Sirkis). For the special code you need to get the discount, visit the NAPP member’s Web site.
That’s it for today’s news. Have a great Tuesday!

Great news - about your new book. I’ll be recommending your book to my students.
Nice idea to feature NAPP member portfolios here.
I ordered mine early June! I’ll be glued to my mailbox now - can’t wait for it to arrive!
There’s a broken link to Deal.com regarding the Epson photoviewer.
B&H have the $100 off rebate too:

Hi Scott!
I’m pretty much addicted to everything I can find with “Kelby” written on it
(very sad I know! I must try to get out more often ;-D).
I’ve just recieved an Email from Amazon (UK) that I can expect my CS3 book in tne first week of October(!???) due to a change of relaese date.
Sob! Sob!
You mentioned ScanCafe in your blog. I have had a lot of slide and prints scanned through a similar service called DigMyPics Have not used ScanCafe but can highly recommend DigMyPics
Scott:
Amazon now lists the book as not available for another 4-6 weeks.
Any idea if this is likely an error or whether there is a delay in distribution?
Thanks.
Mark
Scott -
Did you implement Lightroom into your CS3 book?
Ivan
PS -
I mean, when you talk about a workflow, as you did in CS2, do you use Lightroom for importing?
To Mark:
It’s my understanding that the books are already on their way to Amazon and B&H, and I expect them in stock by this weekend (early next week at the latest).
To Ivan: This book is exclusively on using the CS3 Bridge and Photoshop CS3, and as it was; I had a really hard time making it fit, without adding hundreds of pages (see the post above).
To Karl: I’m pretty certain that there is no delay for the UK Amazon and it should be there soon.
Hi Scott,
Hey can’t wait for the new book to hit Amazon’s shelves. I too have pre ordered mine and am eagerly awaiting it’s arrival.
Don’t know how you fit everything in, but keep it up … you’re doing an awesome job.
Best wishes to you and yours,
Glyn
Hi Scott,
Can you say if the current edition covers 4.1 of the RAW converter? With so many changes, would be god to get a definitive guide.
Look forward to reading it .. if and when it hits Amazon UK :/
Mike
They’re still not at Barnes and Noble. Aug. 10 is the promise there.
Hey Scott I have CS3 for Photogs, CS3 Down and Dirty Tricks and CS3 Tips and Tricks on order since May 22, 2007…I just check with Amazon…they won’t ship until Sept 1-14…Can you shed some light on what is going on????
Barnes and Noble has them in the store here in Frederick, Maryland, 50 miles north of Washington, D.C. Just six copies, but it’s a start.
Hi Scott,
I’ve been trying the order the Photoshop CS3 Down and Dirty book since it was CS2 in 2005.Its been delayed or cancel more times than I can count. It just got canceled again today. Is there any idea when it’s actully going to come out? I love those books
Please forgive my typos. I have both Digital photography book , Love them!
I would love to see a book on Hollywood effect specially. Sort fo reserve engineering on the best Movie Posters and CD Covers, also current trends like layer grunge images and ornament design.
I was doing my own research on scan sliding options. So I put all of my findings on a simple sheet so you can see them side by side.

While scancafe did ok they are no longer the cheapest, fastest or best.
