Update on Gitzo Traveler Tripod Field Report

After I posted my field report on Friday about my experience with the Gitzo Traveler Tripod, I received a wave of posts, calls, and emails from other Traveler users and not a single one was having the leg slipping problems I was having.
So my problem is either (a) operator error (meaning I’m doing something wrong), or (b) there’s something wrong with my individual tripod, which admittedly could have been caused by “a.” I’ve talked with the folks at Gitzo since then, and I’m sending the tripod back to Gitzo for their tech’s to figure out what the problem is (I’m really hoping it’s not operator error. I don’t want to be known as the guy who couldn’t figure out how to use his tripod).
I also learned, after talking with Gitzo directly, that the Traveler doesn’t use the same G-lock system as my Gitzo Mountaineer tripod. It does use Gitzo’s Anti-Leg Rotation system, but it’s a non G-Lock version.
Anyway, thanks to everyone who emailed, called, or posted comments here on the blog. I really love the tripod and don’t want to give it short shrift because of user error on my part (which I have a sinking feeling that’s exactly what it is).

Hi Scott,
Thanks for the insightful gear reviews and all the other helpful daily stuff, for that matter.
I read your tripod review with great interest but was wondering about something. am the proud owner of a Manfrotto 190MF4 carbon-fiber travel tripod with similar specifications to the Gitzo you used. I used it during a recent one week trip to the Smokies and always felt somehow inadequat with my little travel tripod standing next to all the other photographers with their human size Gitzo monsters. Then again, I enjoyed the fact that my tripod fits onto the side of my backback while others are lugging around their big guns up and down hills with great pain. Once back from my trip I however was the one with the pain, in my neck that was. From the constant bending down and looking through the viewfinder my neck had taken quite some strain and I swore myself to buy a bigger tripod once the finances allow. Now I am reading your raving review about this little travel size tripod. Doesn’t the short lenght bother you? Or am I doing something wrong? I assume you don’t elevate the center column.
Keep up the good work.
Sebastian
Hi Scott
First off I want to thank for the wealth of information that I have gathered via your books over the years. (Of course you could probably thank me as well for buying them and keeping you doing what you do. ha ha)
Anyway, I just finished your book “The Digital Photography Book” and I have a quick question that you or other professional photographers can probably answer for me.
I am a graphic designer so photography is a big part of my business but I am no professional so I am not sure of the rules regarding photos of buildings used in commercial advertising. My clients are mostly small companies but I would hate to cause any legal ramifications by my ignorance on this subject.
I have a client who would like a photo of his product in front of a casino. So what is the deal if I use a casino, a football stadium, or other structure that is owned and recognizable on a flier or in a magazine advertisement…do I owe the owner?
Contacting the right person for permission could turn out to take more time than the job itself. Would slight modifications in the photos eliminate the problem?
Any help would be appreciated!
Again thanks,
Michael
Scott-Hi
I have been reading the comments and your views on the Gitzo traveller, and was just wondering what your feelings are right now, about the tripod. I have the Eos1ds,MK3, and I guess the heaviest lens will be the 70/200 2.8 IS, but for the most part,24/70 or 100 macro…..Tripods are always a pain to lug around, but you are always overwhelmed with the quality it brings..question is, can this tripod deliver?and is the b&s head up to it?
Would love to hear your thoughts on this, as travelling light always means more spontaneous images….. many thanks, in advance,
Kind regards,
Paul
