You Know It’s Going to Be a Weird Day, When…
So we land at the tiny airport in Kalispell, Montana, and as we get off the plane there’s a man standing there to greet us, holding the sign you see above. This could only be (and it is), Bill Fortney, from Nikon Professional Services, who’s teaching the workshop with me. So, when I saw the sign I reacted much as I imagine Ansel himself would have—I punched his lights out. (Kidding, totally kidding). Actually, once I stopped laughing my butt off, I did what Ansel himself probably would have done if he were alive today. I pulled out my iPhone and got a shot of crazy Bill holding that sign. It’s going to be a wild week!
We’re off to our sunrise shoot, so I’ve got to go, BUT….(TEASER ALERT): I got to shoot with the Nikon D3 yesterday, and I’m shooting with it again this morning, and…….. (well, check back later for the scoop).

You’re totally right about Ansel, he was a gadget freak. He’d be shooting digital and going crazy with Photoshop. You probably would have been one of his heros today if he had lived to be 105.

You are killing me with the teasers about the D3!!!!! I am so jealous!!!!! Tell me more…….
Welcome to Montana! I wish that I could have joined you since this is about as close as you have come to my neck of the woods…. Billings … but life keeps getting in the way. If your shooting near any of the wildfires try out a expodisc pointed at a area that has the most orange … gives kind of a orange / yellow hue to the photos.
Also remember your iPhone will be roaming (that is why all of us “Mac” geeks in Montana don’t own one). Carry your bear pepper spray. And the town’s name is Kalispell. (Don’t want you to get shot on the first day by any of the natives for mispelling the name of their town do we?)
You are showing up during the fall raptor migration … your in for a treat.
All my best
Mark Gale
Scott, the locals spell it K A L I S P E L L.
I’ll be on the west side of Glacier Park for a week beginning Saturday. Come over and say hello.
Too bad Logan Pass is closed, huh?
Regards,
Lee
I’m really curious about what you think about the D3.
About Bill, well, there’s something strange about the tip of his fingers or the iPhone does some strange processing
Well I must admit that somethings amiss about the fingertips being weird. Maybe thats the first firmware fix for the D3. “It will turn your fingertips purple from shooting too much?”
Esteemed Kelby,
I have your Adobe Photoshop CS3 book. My downloads gave me a surprise.
Chapter 8 & 9 were from your CS2 book. Since my dial-up DL take hours I repeated the same DL on a friends speedy system. Same problem.
Scott,
This is part 2 of the Chapters 8 & 9 problem. Could you send me a disc of the DLs. I would remit. I am a NAPP member. Including a disc would be an appreciated touch.
Stan
Scott,
Ask the locals around the park where the salt licks are, there are usually some large local critters nearby to shoot.
I love Glacier, was there 3 times this summer and also last fall, you will fall in love with it too and want to come back.
Pam
Gasp! are his fingertips the victims of a quick photoshop fix gone bad?
With all the Photoshop and Mac and now Lightroom writing you do many of us forget about your wonderful photography, i hope you got some great shots!
And for my money I think Ansel would have walked over and said something funny like “good to meet ya, my name is Ansel Adams too, isn’t that a coincidence!” he was a funny guy.
