How Does He Do It? In Camera or In Photoshop?
I ran across Patrick Hoelck’s brilliant photography portfolio after I saw it discussed (OK, debated) in an online forum (I wish I could remember which one). I really, really like his style, but beyond his cool photography, what peaked my interest was how the forum participants were arguing back and forth about whether his “look” comes from his technique in camera, or after the fact in Photshop. Now, as a guy who really loves Photoshop, I have great respect for him either way (because digital photography in the 21st century is two things; the photography and the processing in Photoshop), so if he’s getting this look in Photoshop, all I can say is “Please teach it to me!” If he’s doing it all with lighting (as apparently he is quoted in a magazine article), then all I can say is “Please teach it to me!” Either way; take a look at his cool images and see what you think (and post your comments as to whether you think it’s mostly done: “In the Lighting” or “Later In Photoshop”).

I thought I was the only one who knew about Patrick Hoelck. I wish I knew which forum you read about him in. His photography is excellent. I love his style more than anyone else’s. I don’t know how he does it (I would guess Photoshop), but I hope you learn how, so you can teach it to me.
Hi Eric, Of cource more than you heard about him!? I mean he is a very established photographer for god sake:)
I’m sorry that I sound like a bitch, could’nt help myself:)
But I mean, look, here are some of his assigners:
Vanity Fair , Flux (UK), Soma (US), Blackbook (US), Urb (US), Paper (US), Lowdown (UK), Rolling Stone (US), Tokion (Japan, US), Flaunt (US), Raygun (US), Star UK (England), While you Were Sleeping (US), Stuff (US), Maxim (US), Blender (US), Arena Mag, Mass Appeal, Vibe, Complex, V Life, Interview, Blk and Wht Mag, Source, Proficy Mens Fitness, Giant, Fhm, Q Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, FHM (UK), FHM (Australia) , US Weekly (USA), Marie Claire (UK), Gala (France)
And yes, he work a lot with lighting. A photographer can see that, and then he works in photoshop with retush. It looks like the backgrounds sometimes are inserted or the opposite. But the light has to be good from the beginning. The whole base in the picture is made by lighting, but also how he make the people pose, and how he make them feel relaxed. He seem to work a lot with the light, and has knowledge about what his doing. He use coloured light sometimes or filter. It also looks like he mix a lot of different light with differnet temperature sometimes.
One can never be an establish really good photographer if one doesn’t know about photography and lighting. That is the whole base of the profession. Photo is all about light and lighting. That is what a photography is created by. Photoshop is something else, more garnish, but not the dish itself. If one click on art work on his webpage one come to another webpage with a lot of non artistic pictures. That was a little bit of a disappointment. I hope he didn’t take those.
