Friday News Wrap-up
Nov. 2
12:00 am

Here’s what’s up as we head into the weekend:
- How ’bout we start with some photographic inspiration by stopping for two minutes to check out the brilliant work of photographer Erik Almas. Great images, and very nicely-executed Photoshop technique. Here’s the link (It will start your Friday off right).
- Peachpit Press has a contest going on called “The $1,000 Question” (the logo is shown above) where they asked a number of photographers (yours truly included), what they would tell a friend to buy if they only had $1,000 to spend on digital photography. There are five different short video advice clips, and just by watching them, and voting on which package you’d like to have yourself, you’re entered into the grand prize giveaway of (you guessed it), that $1,000 in digital photography gear you voted on. Watch the clips, and enter Peachpit’s contest right here.
- Here’s a link to a very interesting blog from a photo editor at a major magazine. It’s called “A Photo Editor’s Blog” and I have to say, even if you’re not interested in submitting your work for publication to a major mag, the ideas and perspective shared there about how to submit, your portfolio, what works/what doesn’t, etc. is really fascinating. Definitely worth checking out (here’s the link once again).
- I have right around 1,100 people joining me next Tuesday at the Javits Center in New York City for my Photoshop CS3 Power Tour one-day seminar, and if you haven’t made plans to join me for the day; it’s not too late! Click here for details and to snag a seat. Hope to see you there!
- I hope to be posting some shots from a very special shoot I have lined up for this weekend, and if I get anything, you’ll see it here on Monday morning (I’m keeping my fingers crossed).
That’s it for today. Hope everybody has a great weekend, and we’ll see you in New York next week (ya know….or not).

I would like to add my $1000 worth- I’m leaning towards Matt’s suggestion where he adds the lens. You can get a pretty decent package at a local warehouse store on a Canon Digital Rebel with two lenses and case, add Adobe Photoshop elements to that mix PLUS several books by you and the other Photoshop guys and you are good to go.
Just got your 7-point book in the mail and with a rainy day expected in New England tomorrow, I should be able to keep busy and dry.
Have a great weekend.
Hi Scott,
Sorry, but like Peter, I am leaning towards Matt’s package. I too, received your 7-point book from NAPP yesterday. However, I won’t get a chance to even look at it until next Tuesday. (Busy sports weekend shooting)
Thanks for all of your hard work and insiration Scott, I have learned more than you can imagine from your books, PhotosopWorld, and the seminars I have attended.
Mike
Hi Scott -
Just a quick note on your new 7-Point System for Photoshop book… I can only say THANK YOU… I am the guy you describe in your introduction - knowing that my photo needs fixing, but not knowing where to start in Photoshop to fix it… I have bought many Photoshop books (even some of yours), but still have not had a consistent workflow to use every time I look at a photo. Attending various workshops only confused the issue more, as each photographer or instructor has their own way of doing things. FINALLY, you have provided a roadmap to use each and every time I open a photo where I will not have to rifle through hundreds of pages in multple books to figure out where to start and what to do. And when I come back 3 weeks later, as you describe, I know I will start in exactly the same place. Thanks again.
Bob
Brilliant competition - why can’t we Brits enter?
Honestly, the best advice was: Get a camera, cuz you think different with a camera in hand. Not a particular camera brand, but just encourage people to get a camera. It’s now what you use, but how you use it that is important.
Scott, I cannot find a place to send you an email, so I will leave my question here.
What happened to the follow up on Drobo? Are you going to review it? What are you using for storage and backup for photos?
Scott.
Really enjoyed the Tampa Lightroom seminar. Everyone from NAPP went above and beyond. Very nice!
My question is this. I started the 7-Point System and I imported the photos in Lightroom. From camera rqw you have people open some photos into Photoshop as smart objects. Can you do the same with Lightroom?
My other question is when you wanted to do two or more corrections with a smart object, you copied the smart object and then you double clicked the copied smart objects thumbnail to open it up in camera rqw. This does not seem to work when you brought your image in from Lightroom.
What is the work around here.
Thanks
David Leatherwood
Mr. Kelby: Do you plan on publishing “the Photoshop Elements 6 book”? If so when will it be available?
Thank you
Dudley Hoguet
