My New York Studio Shoot Last Week

The day before my Photoshop CS3 Power Tour seminar in New York City last week, I rented a photography studio in Manhattan that is set-up to look like a trendy New York loft. It was completely furnished with 150 set pieces that were arranged into different rooms, for different looks. I hired two professional male models and a female model for some location shots for the book I’m working on: Volume 2 of “The Digital Photography Book,” (This isn’t an update of the first book; this is a totally new book that picks up where the last book left off, and adds chapters on off-camera flash, building a studio from scratch, and a lot more).

Anyway, here are a few shots from that shoot [click on any of the bottom three for a larger view]. These aren’t shots that will actually make it into the book, but it gives you an idea of what the shoot looked like, and what kind of look I was going for. This was a daylight studio, with windows on all sides, but since a lot of the shots would be backlit, I brought in a 7′ Elinchrom Octabank (the single most glorious, marvelous, and wrapping light I’ve never seen–you can see it in the third shot above) as my main light source. I shot with both a Nikon D2Xs and a Canon EOS 1D Mark III (the shot of me shooting above was taken by Dave Moser).

The floors in this loft studio were white, the ceilings were white, the walls were white, but the furniture was very cool (and that made it a bit hard to maneuver that huge Octabank and power-pack around sometimes), but we had a blast at the shoot, and then wound up at B&H Photo (as all good New York trips do), and finally at Carmine’s on W. 44th for an incredible family style Italian dinner. The next day was my seminar, and right after that I caught the last flight home. What a great way to spend a few days in the city. :-)

Can’t wait for the book to come out, Scott! I have your first book and it really taught me a lot. Maybe you can share with us some of the topics you will cover in your next book…

Thanks for always having the passion to share with us your knowledge and experience! :)

      Hey Scott,

you’re gonna have to design the ‘Scott Kelby Storage Shelf’ for all these books to fit on :o)

Seriously though…you produce some amazing stuff. The 7 Point System alone is saving me masses of time. I’ve just processed over 120 photographs in record time cos now I’m looking at images and straight away knowing what to do, in what order and a heck of a lot quicker .. so thanks so much.

Needless to say I can’t wait for this new book to hit the shelves.
      Keep ‘em coming :o)

All the best to you and yours,
      Glyn

      Hello Scott,

Do you have any tips for taking pictures of jewelry that you are going to sell?

Please take a look at my wifes shop of the pictures I took of her jewelry.

      Please advise.

I think that you read my mind and then write a book. Going into detail about how to set up a studio and which lighting to get owuld be so helpful.

I’m not liking the third shot - seems like the subjects are bunched together and there is alot of oepn space. I’m interested to hear others’ thoughts on it - or am I just crazy? I really like the second shot - very intense eyes.

      Scott,
Like the other comments I love all your books but the “The Digital Photography Book” is one of my favorite and carry it in my camera bag all the time. Now I might need a bigger camera bag when this books comes out. Let us know when we can pre-order it :)

      Thanks

      Hello Scott,

I really love the pictures you took in the NYC Studio.
Do you think you could publish the camera settings etc here on your website? (Shutter speed, aperture, etc)

      Thanks!!

      Hi Scott,

Everything you do for photographers is great. I too, liked the first digital photo book. Like you said in that book, you can’t make ugly people look good. These individuals definately fit the ugly catagory. No real touch up needed.

Too Bad I’m not going to Hawaii on December 3rd. I will be there in August for the Cruising Through Life thing though.

      See ya,

      Mike

Mr. Kelby: I just finished your 7-Point System Book - (yes, introduction through to the end), and it is EXCELLENT. I have many Photoshop Books, and I have attended Photoshop World(Boston) and many other programs, so I am an experienced Photoshop user. But this book is the best.

I was initially concerned that the LAB references were a little light, and was very concerned in the tutorials that the shadow/highlight techniques were used the color channels — until I reached Lesson #21, when you brought us into the Lightness channel for that adjustment.

I am very impressed with the organization and presentation in the book. There are great PS tips throughout. I’d say the book is just right for all CS3 (and 2 for that matter) users, new and experienced.

      Congratulations on a great product.

I’ve mentioned on the Fred Miranda site that I think this book is tops - and I had no hesitation to give it a plug, because it is.

      Scott,

Glad to hear the second book is a continuation on the first. I had recieved the pre order information from Barnes & Noble but couldn’t find any detail anywhere on if it was a continuation or not. I am looking forward to it. I have read Volume 1 more than once.

      Scott, love all your books.

I am also curious as to the name of the studio. A website & contact info would be great.

Thanks for all that you do.

      Hi there Scott

      Scott,

I’d like to send you a PDF file of a cover for an issue of the magazine I produce for the Tennessee Education Association. I attended one of your workshops at Photoshop World in Boston last April. It is a treatment of the bank of monitors on a stage with a spotlight on the stage. I’d like you to see what I did with it. But I need an e-mail address to send it to you.

      Scott,

I attended your Photoshop CS3 Power Tour in New York and loved it! I also own 2 of your books (Lightroom book & Digital Photography). I went home that same day, applied some of your tricks and had some great results. Thanks!

I love your pictures in the New York Studio. I think I would really enjoy doing that at least as a hobby.

I am a beginner photographer and know very little about lighting & Studio Lighting in particular (Ever considered writing a book dedicated to Lighting? - I would buy it in a heart beat). What type of Studio lighting kit would you recommend purchasing for a part time studio in my apartment without breaking the bank (

      Scott,
I love your studio shots. Especially the first one. It’d be great if you could publish the parameters on your shots. Did you use the 70-200mm lens from Canon?

      Thanks,
      Alex
