Monday News Fix

Before we jump right in; today I’m on my way up to Washington, DC for this year’s last stop of my “Photoshop CS3 Power Tour” seminar (which is tomorrow at the Washington DC Convention Center). If you’d like to join me tomorrow (and around 750 of my new best friends), you can sign up at kelbytraining.com (it’s $99 for the full day, and only $79 for NAPP members).
Now, onto the news:
- Photoshop Hall of Famer Eddie Tapp is offering a unique training opportunity at the Institute of Visual Arts, in Oahu, Hawaii, where he’s doing a two-day intensive Photoshop CS3 workshop. The details are right here.
- David Ziser has an interesting debate (you can hear the can of worms being opened), called “JPEG or Raw: One of three religious arguments in the digital world”. It’s worth checking out (by the way; David has one of the best and most active photography blogs out there. Just the right mix of technqiue, news, and opinion). Here’s the link.
- Terry White got one of the first Nikon D300s to ship; check out his first impressions over at his tech blog (click here).
Well, I’ve got to head to the airport. I hope to see you tomorrow in DC. Have a great Monday everybody!

Scott,
Speaking of the D300, check this out:
So, it’s Black Friday, @ about 8:10am, and I’m kinda resigned to the fact that I’ll probably have to wait till the D300 becomes readily available, being that websites like B&H and company have D300 wait lists as long as the Danube river, but I digress…………….
On a hunch, I call up my local RitzCamera retailer located about 5mins away from me, and ask if they have any D300s.
I expected to hear a resounding “Sorry, no”.
Instead, the lady who picked up the phone perkily said “Actually, we have 5 D300 bodies. They arrived yesterday (Thursday)”.
I was in the shop faster than you can say “YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!!”
I bought the 1st of the 5, which incidentally comes with a free copy of Nikon’s CaptureNX (ver 1.3 but I’m sticking with LR 1.3, thank you).
The camera feels great to handle, with button access to all the regular attributes (file size quality, ISO, WB). I’m psyched.
In any event, I’d encourage any one who didn’t get on a wait list to check your local camera shops, as it seems Nikon shipped a boatload of D300s to more local dealers than earlier anticipated.
Cheers,
Ade
Hi Scott,
Just a quick note to let you know that the link to the David Ziser blog is not working. Looks like there is just an extra http// in the link. Can’t help it, it’s the Web Developer in me.
Have a good day!

Quick addendum to my last post. I currently own a D80, hence my wanting to step up to the D300.
Having read Dave’s blog ( and the subsequent link from there) about Raw vs JPG, I can see where they are coming from. However, I don’t always get it right in the camera the first time and probably the second…. or thi..
How does or will Adobe DNG fit into this debate ?
Raw can become obsolete, as will one day JPG, as will DNG, just as any other media for that matter. Right now, in the present. I find that raw gives me, the person who is not of the caliber of those above, that little extra control to correct things.
As for obsolescence, I wonder just how long some of the flash media will be around. Unlike 35mm film, which is still around and cameras from “back in the day” can still be used. I wonder if my Canon 5D will still be readable in just a few years ?
One final comment on obsolescence, in this day of 1s and 0s, the only SURE thing to not go obsolete appears to be good old – Papyrus
Ugh, I much rather be in DC today. I was so close to going… Anyway, my dad will be there!
