I Need Your Advice

Tomorrow, Vol. 2 of my book, “The Digital Photography Book” goes to press, and this past week or so I’ve been struggling with something I deal with in every book I write, and that is; “How do I get my readers to read the introduction to the book?”
I put information in these introductions that’s actually very important, including things like where the link is to download the photos used in the book, and which versions of the software the book works with, and workarounds if you have older versions, and my introductions (short as they are) are designed to do one thing; make the book more useful for my readers. I really care that if people invest in one of my books, that they get more than their money’s worth, and if they skip the intro, they will definitely miss out some of the features of the book, why certain things are written the way they are, and much more.
But from my years of research, I’ve found that most people skip over any introduction (not just in my books, but in all books). I understand, they want to get right to the meat of the book, so I keep my intros very short, but it doesn’t help. I know people skip over it, because daily (and I mean each and every single day), I get numerous emails from readers asking the very questions which are answered in those intros. I’ve tried every trick in the book to get people to read my short intros, including:
- Naming the intro Chapter 0
- Disguising it as a real tutorial
- Telling the reader NOT to read this section
- Using humor (well, a lame attempt at humor) to get the reader involved
- Including it at the front of Chapter 1
- And basically camouflaging it any way I can, to get people to actually take two minutes and read it.
So here’s where I need your help. I’ve already written the introduction to this book, and it’s particularly important because this is a Vol 2. and it will be for two different readers: (1) People who bought the first book, and will want to know how this relates to the first volume, and where I posted some video clips with expanded information from the book, etc. and (2) People who haven’t bought Vol. 1 and need to know how the book works, which cameras it works for, and a host of things they would be sending me (or my publisher) emails about.
Anyway, if you have any ideas or suggestions on what I can do to get my readers to read these short intros (I could rewrite it tonight, and have it edited by tomorrow’s deadline) I would be seriously indebted to you. In fact, I take this so seriously, that if you post an idea or suggestion here (as a comment) that makes me rewrite the intro tonight, I will arrange for you to have a free full conference pass to the Photoshop World Conference & Expo, coming up in April in Orlando, FL. If I don’t wind up rewriting it, but incorporate one of your ideas, I’ll still send you a signed copy of the book, with my thanks and gratitude.
But beyond just snagging the pass or a signed book, you’ll be helping me and my readers, immeasurably, and you’ll remove the single most frustrating obstacle I face in writing educational books, for that I will be forever indebted.
Just post any ideas you have here, and even if I don’t wind up rewriting this intro, there’s always the next book and if I can incorporate some of your suggestions, and make a few more people read the intros, it will have been a really worthwhile effort for both of us.
Thanks in advance to you all for your help, ideas, and suggestions, and for giving me the honor of getting to write books for you (Even though I’m sometimes silly in my books, it’s a job I take very seriously).

Hi Scott:
I just purchased your photoshop elements 6
I have backed up all my photos on DVD’S
I have also backed them up on an external hard drive
Question: In the Organizer I have a mess, and it has been suggested that as I have everything backed up, I should delete everything in the Organizer and start again.
As I have your book, and can hopefully do it step by step is this a wise thing to do?
How do I go about deleteting everything in the Organizer? Cheers! Irene
Me Again:
I have your 2 Digital Photography books, they are excellent
We are going to Spain, Barcelona then on an 11 day cruise
I have the Nixon D 60, and was thinking about getting the lens 18 – 200 so I would only have to take one lens with me.
Is this a good idea?
Have the 18 – 55 plus zoom 55 – 200
Many Thanks, Irene
I’ve read your books and respect your advice so I am hoping you can help as I am making myself crazy trying to make the “right decision”. I have a Canon 40D and will be going to the Orient. I prefer to take only one lens and have been trying to decide between the Canon 17-55 F2.8 or the Canon 24-105 F4 L. I realize there is a trade-off no matter what I chose but since I have the kids college and a mortgage to pay, I can only afford one lens. What would you recommend for travel photography?
With LR 2 under the library/photo/stacking there is Autostack by auto time. Many times I forget to flag with my hand I am starting a HDR group and then when I look at the images in the library I loose track. Because I use continous fast in the capture, can I use the Autostack to go through a large number of images and stack them all automatically?
Hi,
I had a questions, and I would really appreciate some help and/or advice. I have been doing a lot of portrait photography, and notice that I seem to have silver “dots†in people’s hair and on certain places on their skin. Softening/noise reduction helps a little, and using the dust/scratches control on CS2 helps, but it softens the entire picture, which I don’t want to do. Cloning dots on the skin is no problem, but on the hair is a pain in the neck. Also, cloning 300-400 pictures is a REAL pain in the neck. I don’t think it’s dust on my sensor (because the “dots†cluster mostly in my subjects hair, so it’s not exactly random (although the skin “dots†could be random, but I doubt it). Any ideas on what these imperfections could be and any idea of how to get rid of them?
Thanks very much,
Clint Wolf
Scott, I just attended PhotoShop World in Vegas and had the pleasure of sitting in on two of your classes. They were great as I expected they would be.
I love your intros and your sense of humor. I think one thing that might get more people to read the intro would be if you put easter eggs in them like they do in video games. This could be things like web addies or links to extra goodies on your sites with cool photos, contests or other extra tips. You could then allude to these in the regular chapters to get people to go. I think once you get them to the intro, most people would then read it all.
I know if I did not usually read the intro, but then saw that there were easter eggs there, I would go look. I think most of us are tech nuts enough that something like that would lure us in.
But besides that, just wanted to say thanks for your books, websites and great classes. As I have started learning PhotoShop, and opened my business, your books have been, by far, the best resources I could have.
You make all the materials easy to read and understand.
Thanks and look forward to Photoshop World 09′.
P.S. If you ever have a job opening for a still-learning, but very eager person, let me know. ha ha mostly (but, no, really!)
I have just recently purchased a copy of 7-Point System and I have found that the illustration you have for the ACTION dialogue box on page 12 is not the one I see with CS3 on my Intel MacPro Leopard computer. I don’t have the option of naming the ACTION Set.
Put another copy of the introduction in the middle of chapter one
Hey Scott,
After having purchased your 7-Point System book a couple months ago, I’m finally getting down to it with the lessons. So far I’m lovin it, but I’m having an annoying issue which is just stumping me.
I’ve downloaded and imported the Lessons images into Lightroom 2. If I apply adjustments in LR in the develop module and attempt to open the image to edit normally or as a smart object into Photoshop CS3, PS opens but the image itself never opens within PS. The problem doesn’t occur when opening the image into PS through Camera Raw. Also, this doesn’t occur with any of my nef’s. The only easily observable difference between your nef’s and mine are the cameras used. The issue is consistently reproducible.
Lightroom, Photoshop and camera raw are fully updated (except LR 2.1).
I’ve looked through other postings on this and some other blogs/forums and sadly, I appear to have reached somewhat of a dead end.
Can you offer some advice as to why this occurs and/or how to remedy?
Thanks,
Paul
Hi Scott,
already too late to help with Book 2, as it is already on my shelf with many of its brothers. my idea (hopefully not replicated above) for the introduction works on the premise that we want what we are not allowed. Tell a child they can’t have something and they want it all the more… Us readers are no different..
Sooo…
create the introduction in your own unique style.. and SEAL it… you can only read the introduction once you have bought the book and removed the tear off strip.
nothing like curiousity to entice us child like readers into the cookie jar
either way, good luck with getting your message across
Regards
Scot

Hi Scott,
I really love your Down & Dirty Tricks books. They’re awesome! There is an effect I want to learn how to do and it doesn’t seem to be covered in any of your books. It would really be great if you had a technical support team who could answer specific questions. It woud be a “per call” charge of course.
Thank you.

Hi Scott-
Us Luddites live by your “7-Point System”. Update for CS4???
Hope so.

Do what we do in business communications – use bullet points. People already have too much to read:
keep each bullet point to one line (only)
keep it to 1-2 pages (only)
color code by subject type (new, improved, resources, etc.)
set the page off somehow (graphically) so we can flip back to it quickly
KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid – or Sweetheart, if you prefer)
Good luck. I love your books!!!!
Scott,
I am a big Fan!! I have a challenge and wondered if you may be able to help or point me in the right direction. I am the technical director for Carnival Cruise Lines Photo Operations. We capture and print approx 89 Million images a year. We would like to explore the possibility of adding some of the great plug-in effects to our images but need an automated system. Simply put, we use backend lab system based on an Express Digital platform. This plat form does not support photoshop plugins. I was thnking that maybe we can accomplish our goal by developing some scripts that possibly could create a modified hot folder workflow where images can be dropeed into a specific folder for an effect and automatically it would launch Photoshop and apply a preset for this effect. We would then pick up the modified images within our current workflow for printing. Is this something that will work, is there a better way, and do you do this type of thing or can you refer me to someone I could speak with.
Thank You in advance

Using your 7 Point System Book and CS3 Extended, Intel MacPro with Leopard I find one thing DOESN”T happen when following the tutorials. When creating an Action I cannot rename the SET from Default to anything else. There fore every set I make ends up in the Default folder. Also the shot in Lesson 8 is nowhere as sharp as the illustration in the book. I can clearly read the lens detail around the lens in the book but with difficulty when having sharpened the image as directed.
I have your Vol 1 of Digital Photography and have read the book from cover to cover while going through some of the exercises. I recently started shooting Raw and I am trying to figure out what to do next and why. However, on a recent trip I tried uploading the raw images in Bridge on my Laptop (running Vista) and the files would copy, but the DNG conversion failed. I can’t figure this out. Obviously, or maybe not so much, the raw file is not visible in Bridge or Photoshop to be able to make any adjustments or corrections.
What am I missing?
Hi Scott,
I’m a photographer in the netherlands. I’m a huge fan of you, I got three books of you, but still I haven’t found an answer on big problem for me.
I hope you can help me with this one.
when I try to make a vignette around a picture, I get some strange almost not noticeable lines in it. but when I get this picture printed in a larger format, you can see these lines. I tried to solve this problem on different ways but I haven’t found a good solution.
I don’t know where I have to post my question so I hope this is good.
kind regards,

How can I get all my pictures into one folder so I can use them in lighroom 2? Thank you. Joseph
Greeting Scott,
I recently had the opportunity to shoot a friend’s wedding at night. I wanted to balance the available light in the hall with the flash from my camera. I own a Nikon D200, SB800 flash and used a Nikon 17-55mm 1:2.8 lens. I set my camera to Iso 800, 5.6f/stop and 1/60sec shutter speed (I used the setting that came from your second book). I then pointed my flash to the ceiling. My camera is set to flash sync mode 1/30 and 1/250 FP for sync speeds. I also shot every image using raw. I was planning on using Photoshop for corrections if needed. Here is my problem: My images have more digital noise than I have ever experience. How can I fix these images for one and second I do I correct my images for the future?
Thanks,
Floyd

The Question I have is about Photography.
I am a professional lifestyle photographer,
I was offered a gig at a high end Gallery in
NY to photograph the paintings and other art
for the galleries brochures, the 3D stuff is not a
problem it is the paintings. I need to learn how to
photograph paintings, the color must be spot on
for the brochures. Need to learn about making color
profiles for the printer.
Question … Can to help me with this?
A little more background on me:

I know I’m past the deadline– but I say next time you have Amanda Kern “sketch note” your intro. That’s one intro I’d read. ;o)
Hi – I am using your technique to make collages from the book “The Adobe Photoshop CS3 book for digital photographers”. I made a collage following the techniques on page 436-439 using Smart Objects (pages 160-1) to place the images. I used 4 5×7 images with image sizes of 1-2 MB each. The problem is that when I save the file down from a PSD to a JPG to be able to submit it to a printing company, the file size is reduced significantly and it no longer has enough resolution to print. It seems like the files are being downsized when I add them as smart objects.
Any ideas? Thanks! Lucinda
Hey Scott. Just wanted to say I have read several of your books and they have helped me tremendously. Anyways, I have been shooting with my friends canon equipment. But now I’m in a position to buy my own. I’m really tempted to get the D300 over the 50D even though I am use to Canon Equipment. I just want to know why you picked Nikon over Canon?
Scott,
I’ve been shooting with a Nikon D70S for 2+ years now and am looking to purchase the D700. However, all my current lenses are DX. I do have the 70-300mm f3.5 VR, 50mm f1.4 and the 18-70mm f3.5 but am uncertain about which of these will shoot full frame on the D700. I know the 18-70mm will not. What’s your opinion regarding the D700 and one wide angle lens that you’d recommend? This is just an expensive hobby for me not a profession. I don’t want to end up with a D700 that’s shooting 5MP instead of full frame. Thanks, Raphe
QUICK START GUIDE
Failure to do the following before reading this book may cause cognitive dissonance or massive frustration:
**STEP 1: Go to your computer
**STEP 2: Download X
**STEP 3: Do Y
**STEP 4: Understand Z
Every software package or new technology you buy has a quick start guide because nobody reads directions anymore. They do this to prevent service and support calls, so it must work reasonably well. I also like the idea of a reference fold-out in the middle of the book where you can easily flip to it from any page. Frequent references to it in chapters reinforces importance.
Good luck!
–Doug
Dude, just realized your original post was Nov. 2007. Clearly I just started reading your blog! Hope to be more timely on next one.
Scott, I have just just purchased Lightroom 2, installed it, and I now plan on going through you entire book on Lightroom 2 step by step (without skipping anything). I have a Mac and all of my photos are in the IPhoto application. I have made an empty file named My Lightroom Pictures in the my pictures folder. All of the pictures I have on my computer right now are all in IPHOTO, so do I drag IPHOTO in to this folder? I am not sure how to get all of my current pictures into this folder. Thanks for your help. Debra
At first I’m sorry for mistakes which I do but I’m from Poland and my English isn’t good. I hesitate between two cameras: NIKON D90 and NIKON D70s. I’m beginner photographer (I’m 15 and I have interested photography for approximately 1 mounth). I know that except body VERY VERY important is objective too. But at first I reflect on only body. I know that purchase cameras is very important and puchase should be my own decision but I want to get some advices. So what is your opinions?
I have just finished reading the Digital Photography Book Volume 1 and 2 and they are awesome! Since you highly recommend purchasing a high quality tripod I am considering either the Gitzo GT3531 Mountaineer or the Gitzo GT3530LS Systematic. The Mountaineer has a center column and I have heard this may create stability problems. I see that you use the GT3540 Mountaineer. Have you ever experienced any stability problems with the center column? In your opinion do most professionals use a tripod with or without a center column? Before I make this purchase I would like to hear your feedback. Thank You….
Hi can you please advise re: colour settings in photoshop?
I have just bought your book photoshop CS3 for digital photographers & would like to set up the correct colour settings as described in your book page 184 onwards.
My question is as i live in the UK & the advise in your book is for the USA i am presuming that i do not use North American Prepress 2 & that i should use Europe Prepress 2, also in CMYK what setting should i use here.
Would you please advise, with thanks.
can lightroom default all your different catalogs in the same folder. i have 20+ catalogs and if i forget what i called some of the catalogs i can not find the them later.
when you look under files used ‘most recent’ does not show all of the catalogs i have built.
i have had to manually move all the lightroom cat.’s to one master folder. surely there is a better way.
please advise, thank you chris
p.s. what your doing in africa is outstanding, we are raising funds for an orphange in haiti.
I have your book for Lightroom, but now I’m interested in Hyper Real images. I’ve done some research and came across an expensive plugin (Luxis Art). I was wondering what technique can I use, or book that you may have written that explains in details how to accomplish this artistic look.
Thanks
Hi Scott,
I’m guessing that the intro that you have asked help for has already gone to the publishers. Here I have to confess I didn’t read the intro first but scanned the book from cover to cover, and only now am I starting to read the intro and came across you web site and haven’t got an further.
In answer to you question, to me it’s a no brainer really – DON’T HAVE ONE – put all that you want to say ‘the important stuff’ in the chapters as they come up, not at the begining but thru it.
It would work for me any way

Dear Mr. Kelby,
I started a The Paris Digital Photography Meetup Group http://www.meetup.com/The-Paris-Digital-Photography-Meetup-Group a few days ago- on December 17.
I would kindly invite you to our Meetups if and when you might be planing to visit Paris!
I am planing the first meetup on January 16, 2009. Usually these kind of meetings are being held once a month. If you have plans for 2009, please, please, join us!
You might greatly help me joining the group and giving me some tips online!
We have 14 people registered as members of this Meetup group for only three days.
It would be a real step forward in promoting your passion for digital photography all around the word!
The most sincerely!

I have been using Microsoft Digital Imaging for my photo editing. I want something better I don’t know which to buy Photoshop Elements or Photoshop CS. I have been reading up on them both, I want to be able to layer, change back grounds ,and correct any need photo. Please advise.
Mr. Kelby; Using your Photoshop Channels Book I tried your Blending Channels suggestion on page 158. Is the chapter correct because the photos wouldn’t merge. Thanks and Merry Xmas.
With respect to Lightroom 2 – when i view the folders panel, the folders are in alphabetical order including all the sub folders, how do I collapse the folders panel to show the folder by parent without the sub folders?
you book Lightroom 2 is fantastic.
Scott: A suggestion; would be great if you could dedicate a small chapter on Photoshop Brushes. Which ones to use on what type of projects, how to use them…all you can about this essential tool.
thanks!

Hi Scott,
You are quite right about the introduction thing. i had never read an introduct before, until it was put as a subtopic in chapter 1 directly beneth the chapter title. This way people are affraid they will miss something if they don’t read it. It also started me to readind intro before I buy the book. Hope this helps.

Hi Scott, looking at your Toolbox I notice you have the 1.4 converter for your VR zooms. Shooting with the 70-200, how is the quality with this converter? I have mostly the same equipment as you and shoot mostly weddings.. I was thinking of getting one of these converters for the 70-200.. I’m not entirely sure that I need it. How do you feel about 1.4 vs. 1.7 ?
Many Thanks,
Felix

Hi Scott, I’m very new to Photoshop and I’m working through your guide to CS3. I have a lot of images that were scanned from film from my old camera. They are tif files but due to the high resolution scanner the images are grainy. I was told that this is the scanner showing the grain of the film, I wouldn’t know. What steps would you suggest I take to help reduce the grain and bring my images into their own and taking into account I have quite a lot of images like this from my trip to England and Ireland.
Hi Scott, I’m new to Photoshop and digital photography. At present I’m working through your CS3 book. I have many images from a trip to England and Ireland, they were taken with my film camera before I bought my Canon 40D. The films were scanned and put onto disc as tif files but as I look at them they are all grainy. The photographer that did this for me said he scanned them as detailed as he could which meant the scanner has picked up the grain of the film, I wouldn’t know. What would be the best steps I could take to improve the images, bring some crispness to them?
Cheers,
Jonathan
Scott you are such a looker. How much do you earn a year from all this?
Hi Scott, can you suggest how I might clear up the grain in a lot of my photographs that were digitised from film? I’m told the scanner used is picking up the grain of the film.
Cheers. Happy New Year
