Thursday’s Industry Communiqué (For Lover’s Only!)

When you’ve been writing news every Thursday since 2005, sometimes you just have to call it something other than just the “Thursday News,” so since it’s Valentine’s Day I came up with this name, which includes just a hint of French (the international language of love. Hey, my first thought was to call it “Thursday News Pellets,” which makes “Industry Communiqué” sound totally palatable now, doesn’t it)? Here goes (remember, this is for just for Lover’s—-backwards skating only!):
- On February 28th I’ll be over in Dallas, Texas teaching (on behalf of Nikon), at the annual International Symposium for Aerial Photography (ISAP). This is my 2nd time speaking for this group, and it is just a blast. Beside being just a great group to present to; their photography (which was on display at the event) is simply breathtaking. For more info on the International Society for Aviation Photography, click right here.
- Hard to believe as this must sound, but Photoshop User TV actually did air on “real” television last night on Fox Business channel. Now, as you might expect, besides the date problem, there was apparently a time slot issue in some parts of the country, and as soon as I’m back in the office (tomorrow), I’ll track it down and hopefully get you the right info for next week, but hey….it’s a start.
Also, we expect to have the on-screen guide show “Photoshop User TV” within the next week or so, to make it easier to Tivo each episode. - Last week, a NAPP member named Charlie Guild posted this comment on my blog, and I wanted to share it with you. He wrote, “Of all the things you and the rest of the pack at NAPP have done for me as a photographer (and there has been a ton), one of the best surprises was being turned on to Joe McNally’s The Moment it Clicks. No amount of hype could match what this book delivers. I sincerely believe that time will prove this out to simply be one of the most important single pieces of work in digital photography.” Charlie, I couldn’t agree more.
- For those of you planning to go to Photoshop World in Orlando, make sure to make it a point catch our special after-hour session called “The Art of Digital Photography.” This is not another Photoshop class—-it’s the photographers themselves showing some of their best work, and talking about the creativity and art behind the image, and it’s just such an inspiring, funny, and often touching evening that the following day it’s always the talk of the show. You’ll see presentations from gifted photographers, including Jay Maisel, Joe McNally, John Paul Caponigro, Moose Peterson, Joe Glyda, Vincent Versace, and the panel is moderated by the wonderful Jim DiVitale. It’s a night to remember, so make it a point to be there (the session is open to all registered Photoshop World attendees). Here’s a link with more on this after hour sessions.
- Tech Note for Nikon D300 users: We’ve heard from a handful of D300 users who, since switching to Mac OS X Leopard, have been having a hard time getting their Macs to recognize files from their D300s. The interim fix is to set your D300 so it captures Raw images at 12-bit rather than 14-bit, and that fixes the problem. Rumors have it that Apple is prepping a major bug-fix of Mac OS X Leopard which will be released by month’s end, and that may well include a OS-wide fix for this problem, but at least for now we’ve got a way around it. Just thought we’d pass that on.
That’s it for this “Lover’s Only, Valentine’s Day Industry Communiqué.” I’ll be back tomorrow, with the boringly named “Friday News Wrap-up” to send you whirling off into the weekend full of hope, and promise, and other stuff I only say to my kids. See you then!

Hey Scott,
I read that Apple’s latest Leopard download (10.5.2) which came out on Tuesday addresses the D300’s RAW format. As a D300 shooter and Mac user still using Tiger (currently at 10.4.11) I cannot verify this. I can verify that Tiger still doesn’t handle the D300’s RAW format however. Perhaps I’ll try your trick with Tiger. Or, maybe it’s time to upgrade the computer to match the camera?
Hi Scott. It is great to have you coming to Dallas, TX. But…. Could you please check into a lightroom tour here in Dallas. Im sure we would sell out. Just a friendly reminder. Thanks. Have fun at the aerial photography class.
Happy Valentine’s Day!!!
happy heart day!!!! i am excited that you will be here in dallas, I’ll see you there!
Scott,
I second the motion for a LR tour to come to Dallas. I wish I could make it to this, but I don’t do that line of work.
Please do look into bringing your LR tour to Dallas, and if you ever find yourself in the Big D with nothing to do…give me a call and we can go grab some beers..

Hey Scott. Maybe instead of the boring name of “Friday News” you can go with something more like “The Morning After News” or “My stomach hurts from too much chocolate news”
I couldn’t agree more about Joe McNally’s book “The Moment it Clicks.” I picked it up over the weekend, and have kept pouring over it every chance I get. It feels like a lifetime worth of experience in the industry boiled down into the most substantial insight you would ever want. Just awesome! Thanks Scott & Joe! You guys rock, seriously!
Hey since you shot Nikon and loads of readers proberly do to I thought you might wan’t to know there is a firmware update out for the D300.

Apple released a couple of updates this week for Leopard. The before mentioned 10.5.2 upgrade and a graphics update.
the latest version of Aperture (2.0), also released on Tuesday, can import both D3 and D300 RAW files in both Tiger and Leopard.
Scott,
I received “The Moment It Clicks,” by Joe McNally yesterday afternoon and enjoyed reading through the first 25 pages or so.
I am not so much a photojournalist as I am a fine art/portrait photographer neophyte; therefore, I wish that there was a famous portrait or fine art landscape book that did the same thing that Joe did in his book.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Pat
Oh shoot! Thanks for reminding me. I better get out a buy some chocolates or something. Right after, I finish my morning coffee (breakfast and blogs).
Hello Scott! I am just a girlfriend to one of your biggest fan. He is talkning about you everyday and he think that you are so great. So then I came up with the idea to send you a note on the valentine day but most of al say thank you for inspiring him so much. And when I am writting I also want to send my biggest love to my boyfriend on the valentine day and tell him that I am proud over him and that he is a great photographer. So to both you and Mathias have a great day.
My copy of Joe McNally’s book flopped through my door over here in the UK this morning, and I agree with all the positive comments made. Can I just point out, though, for all those who have yet to order it, that it is a book about photography, not just digital photography. There are lots of film-based stories and illustrations throughout.
Hey Scott,
Really can’t wait to receive Joe McNally’s book … it looks awesome!!!! I agree totally with Charlie Guild, cos without NAPP there is no way I would be at the stage in my career that I am now. Having access to the world’s best instructors in both Digital Photography and Photoshop is a priviledge … the benefits of which make the small membership fee a joke.
Experiencing the growth that I have over the last couple of years excites me no end when I think what is to happen in the future, so thankyou to all of you.
Best wishes to you and yours,
Glyn
Scott,
I came across this website,
http://www.podtech.net/scobleshow/search/photowalking
It has photography tips, tutorials and just random photography chat.
Some videos go from 15 minutes to an hour.
It might be something fun for your readers to look at.
The show can be saved or downloaded to your I-pod as well.

Hey Scott,
I installed Leopard 10.5.2 on my iMac last night and it did seem to take care of all D300 issues. I can Quick-view 12-bit and 14-bit NEF files out of my D300 in finder and they now come right up!
I also wanted to say how blown away I have been by Joe McNally’s book!! I didn’t expect to be affected nearly as much, nor as deeply as I have been. I have not read the entire book yet, but every page opens new doors, gives me new ideas or simply blows me away in one manner or another.
I bought Joe’s book on your recommendation, and after watching his “Light Shaping Tools” course at KelbyTraining, and all I can say is Joe is my new hero!! Gotta love his new blog too!!
We still love you to Scott, but you’re gonna have to make room on the ole “hero’s list” for Joe now.
I’m sure you guys will get along just fine!
You’ll be speaking in Dallas to an audience of aerial photographers that includes the guys in my art department for AOPA, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. I write for the magazine and fly for the photographers in the art department to get pictures. With the help of NAPP, I have begun to take pictures on my own for the articles, and even illustrated a full feature.
it’s all starting to come together!
A few weeks ago I started blog-hopping & subscribed to a few photo feeds..
(yours being one of them)..
didn’t realize it, but I had your “the Digital Photography Book”,
purchased some time ago from Amazon,
when I had never heard of you before..
started watching PSUserTV 2 weeks ago that I found through NAPP
(and recommended it to our local photo club)
now anxiously awaiting “The Moment It Clicks” to arrive at my door
Thanks Scott!
great to see you’ll be here in TX :0))
I agree with the others. The Moment It Clicks is the best book I’ve read in some time. It’s like walking through a fine art gallery with Joe right beside you saying “Ooo… wanna hear the story behind this one?” or “Here’s the trick for getting this shot”. It’s amazing.
I posted a review for it on my blog here:
http://professionalsnapshots.com/blog/?p=81
The link to Rarindra Prakarsa’s site is well worth following – thank you for sharing it!
Are you able to help us understand how much of this is real light and diffussion going on in the backgrounds and how much is created or enhanced – the light is so present, so direct but soft – what can you tell us about it and the techniques he uses?
Thanks
