The Skyport Flash Triggers Live Demo (with Me and RC)

By Scott on Thursday, March 20th, 2008 at 5:37 am | updates.

I’ve had so many people emailing me about the EL-Skyport wireless flash triggers I mentioned here last week during “Lighting Gear Week,” that I thought I’d pull this video clip, which aired on last week’s episode of Photoshop User TV where we had Mark Astmann from Bogen Imaging (the US Elinchrom distributor), on the show to show how the Skyports work (I do a live demo with Mark, and RC Concepcion is there with me doing the shooting), and you see it all right there live on the set.

It’s a short clip, so just click on the video below to give it a look. I think you’ll be impressed (at the Skyports, not with me and RC).

Hey Scott - you got me thinking now - I have three wizards - would I be able to connect the skyport system to the wizards and have about 5-6 lights ?
thanks again for all the help

It use to be so easy… Pocket Wizards were the way to go. Now we have Skyport, and very soon we’ll have radiopoppers.

Its a shame that the skyport can only control the power of elinchrom heads… and not SB-800.

Does the skyport work over the same long distance as the PW?

    Hi Scott,
I agree, the Nikon site is cool. Do you think they are using an enhanced PS postcard script for their site?
    Thanks

    Hi Scott,

I was wondering, is it possible to control Canon flash units (like the EX580 II) with the EL-Skyport? If it is, is it a better choice for Canon users compared to Canon’s ST-E2

    Thanks
    GT

    Scott,

Looking at the posts this morning…..somewhat confused. I have 3 SB800 (nikon).

What what I understand these device’s are useless with these strobes???. Or Can I use this set to flash my stobes, but I cannot control the power output of the skyport.

How do you trigger there with a meter wirelessly? Kind of tough triggering with a meter and cord.

    Hey all,

I have the Skyports and I can tell you that they work perfectly! I have them set to trigger my 2 SB-800’s as well as my SB-600 from my D200. I needed a hotshoe sync cable to connect my SB-600 since it doesn’t have a sync port like the SB-800.

There are 2 sets of Skyports, the RX Set which Scott uses as well as a Universal Set which you can use on other strobes, hand held flash, etc.
There is a price difference between the two. One you use if you have RX heads the other if you just want some awesome, reliable, affordable, kick butt wireless flash triggers. You won’t be able to control the output of your SB’s but that’s not what they were designed to do. You can only control output with the RX triggers using their USB key on RX strobes.

These things are small but are so, so, nice!

    Hi all,
So let me get this right. After seeing the posted youtube show my mind is nearly made up, one more thing though, before I commit.
I have a D3, three SB800’s and a SU 800. This system alone is amazing and purchased on Scott’s recommendation in line with Joe McNally’s blog.
I can control the output of the SB 800’s with the SU800 and as I shoot in manual, this is extremely easy to do. Will the skports allow me to do the same, i.e. connect the TX to the SU800 and the RX’s to the respective SB800’s. The advantage I will get will be the ability to shoot through walls, which as Iam finding will be an advantage instead of line of site.
Obviously when I purchase some RX 600’s these will work fine with them.
So, question - will the Skyport TX work when attached tot he SU 800 and let me control the SB800’s as I can do now.
    Scott, perhaps you could clarify.
Regards to all and Happy Easter to all your readers.

The Amazon reviews aren’t very favorable, either. One reviewer recommends the cheap ebay triggers until they work out the kinks (please, oh please - radiopopper).

I also agree with his opinion that since it’s not NEW tech - a few bills for some plastic and some Radio Shack parts is a little overkill.

love your work. the books are getting a tad repetitious… and mcnally’s latest offering is NOT good.

    dont hate - create!!

I own a skyport transmitter and 4 receivers; they work absolutely perfectly and are far more reasonably priced than PW’s. They have a huge working range, trigger the flash every time, and are tough little suckers.

    Scott,

I very much enjoy your blog and look to it for good solid information. I am a NAPP member and subscriber to KelbyTraining. I would love to see you do a comparison between the skyport system, the pocket wizard, the radiopoppers and Nikon SU800. Would also like to see Joe do a training course on the Nikon system with information about when he goes from the SU800 to this system (or Pocketwizard, if that is what he uses).

Thanks for all you good work. And, Steve, take your own advice–it does not sound like you are too happy with many things.

Skyports can flash most battery powered flashes, however, just like other radio slave systems, you will need the proper cable to connect them to your flash.

MG - While the Amazon reviewer wished Skyports could control remotely TTL functions on battery powered flashes, that feature is currently only available with proprietary camera manufacturer systems. All reviews of Skyport on Amazon still give the device at least 4 out of 5 starts. And while the reveiwer suggests you might want to look at cheap Chinese triggers, there are absolutely no reviews of them on Amazon. Taking a quick look at reviews of Chinese triggers on other sites indicates these radio slaves system are un-reliable.

These look like way-cool units. I shoot rodeos, and when I’m having to light an arena at night it’s a major pain. We’ve got to set up during daylight, well before the arena lights can be factored into the lighting, so often it’s a real struggle for the first 10-20 minutes to tweak strobes that are not easy to reach.

Currently I’m running 6 White Lightning X-1600 heads, but I’d seriously consider switching to Elinchrom heads just so I could remotely adjust the lighting.

I’ve been waiting for this sort of technology to hit. The Radio Poppers would be great for my wife, who could use them with my three 550ex flashes. I hear that Paul Buff has some new remote triggers up his sleeve, along with a new head in the works, and then there’s these Skyports.

Competition is good. It also is good that that these new triggers can sync other flashes. Maybe we’ll see Pocket Wizard get back to work and come up with a universal solution, or, at least, reduce their prices. Once they’re not the only game in town they’ll have to.

Competition is great and it’s about time.

One thing I can’t figure out is if I start with the universal triggers and then (saving up) get the Elinchrom RX heads, can the universal triggers still control the settings on the RX heads or do I have to buy triggers (the RX ones) all over again.

    Hi

Any idea where I can get contact details for Mark since I have hit a snag with these units.

Simply, we wish to trigger a D300 remotely.

We have obtained a MicroSync 10pin adapter and had a cable made up to connect this to the receivers output.
The adapter works with other brands of trigger and also triggers the D300 by shorting the tip and sleeve of the plug, but does not work with the D300 actually connected.

Where might we be going wrong/what components are required for this to work. Or do I just change to the (inferior?) MicroSync?
