Adobe Reveals Lightroom 2.0 Public Beta at Photoshop World Opening Keynote

Today Adobe announced the release of a free public beta version of Photoshop Lightroom 2.0 (available for free download right now from AdobeLabs.com) and during this morning’s opening keynote at the Photoshop World Conference and Expo (featuring Adobe VP John Loiacono), the 2,500+ attendees will get the first glimpse of Lightroom 2.0 direct from Adobe’s own Lightroom team.
To learn more about Lightroom, visit NAPP’s Lighroom 2.0 Learning Center, or visit Photoshop Product Manager John Nack’s Adobe blog.

um. cool. i’ll DL and have a look.
I literally stopped what I was doing when I saw this bookmark update! I’m going to need a lot of coffee tonight.
i was surprised to see this today and i can’t wait to try it out. I saw that you also have a new LR book coming… another addition to my kelby library! hahahaha!
I’ve done some quick looking around, here are some of my favorite new features. As Scott mentioned in his video, the local adjustments are just plain awesome. http://jonvandalen.com/newblog/2008/04/02/trying-out-lightroom-2-beta/
This is just AWESOME!!! Just when you think that things are good they get even better :o)
The future just gets better and better.
Thanks for the update Scott,
Enjoy PSWorld,
Glyn
will there be plugin architecture so the the likes of NN and u-point adjustments will work with lightroom?
So with the ability to Open Smart Object in Photoshop, we can properly integrate your 7 point system with Lightroom - fantastic.
Scott, it would be nice to see a comparison between your post about “What you’d like to see in Lightroom 2″ and the actual new version.
Seems to me that there is a lot of things you were hoping for that did not made it to this version…. yet.
What do you think ?
I second the idea to compare the wish list to what we’re actually getting.
Am I correct in observing that we still cannot share libraries across a network? It seems like that omission prevents Lightroom from being a serious digital asset management tool.
I’m so far blown away with this update. The Brush tools alone make the upgrade worthwhile!!
Now to test whether its compatible with pressure sensitivity with my Wacom tablet
How hard is it to have LR2 in your hands and not be able to talk about it
until now. Looks great to me. thanks for all you guys do.
David
I bet you guys over at NAPP were just bursting at the seams keeping this big one a secret until your keynote…well done!!!!
Its good that you can now export prints as jpeg files. But why oh why did they not put a PDF export as well. It would be so useful to get PDF files to send to commercial printers. After all Adobe developed PDF. If I’m missing a work around that does not include PS please someone let me know.
Peter
Its exciting to see a new version of software. Now fo rthe bad part. Over on some photography forums I go to I can count over 70 people who are very displeased with Adobe for basically selling LR1.0-1.3 since it really has been in beta since. There are still so many issues with LR that are unresolved how can they really release a enw verison fiull of new features and charged current customers to upgrade without fixing the first version.
I look forward to trying the beta of 2.0 out myself but will not be giving Adobe anymore $ for quit some time as well as dozens of other photographers I know.
What about localized sharpening? Why was sharpening left out from the localized adjustment?
Hey Scott, thanks for the update and I hop ( Did I say HOP :)), sorry I meant I HOPE you are enjoying PS World.
Gave LR 2.0beta a quick test drive and liked what I see so far. Did run into a out of memory error. The new Photoshop integration functionality does not work on my system, everything is grayed out. (I’m using PS 10.0.1 on a Windows Vista - dual core with 4G RAM). I guess this can be expected in beta.
There are several things that you mentioned before and I would still like to see in this release or in a FREE “mid-release” update 2.1. Maybe you can prod your buddies at Adobe. (hint:Use a crutch while you have one
,sorry couldn’t resist)
Included in my wish list are -
* Free or at least a very LOW - LOW introductory upgrade (no more than $49)
* Off line archival tracking, it would be real nice to track images that have been archived on a storage drive or DVD. Maybe very difficult but I have seen it done with Extensis
* Direct Export to Print Services for Photo Books such as Kodak Gallery. Adobe already knows how to do that with Adobe Photoshop Elements.
* The ability to have a image Copyright Watermark overlay in the export option. Presently you can add the copyright that is in the Meta data. I suppose with the ability to print to file in the print module, you could add a custom identity plate watermark before printing to file.
* In the same family, I would like a watermark that is independent of the identity plate.
* I already know how to add special effects to the print Module such as matts, edge effects and frames, but I would like to do so without using the identity Plate as I do now.
Thanks and hope you are feeling better.
Hey Scott,
Still no way to export a slideshow with music??
Hmm, I wonder if this will be a preview of CS4? Maybe Bridge will become Lighroom lite?
Freakin Fantastic!!!
Any chance of getting a book creation part of the print module — or at least an easier way to lay out a photo book. The Blurb software well, sucks!
Thanks for all the great tips and info
Sweeeeet. I watched some videos on Kelbytraining.com and will get it for sure now… Thanks Scott.
Localized sharpening sure would be cool.
Hey Scott, Will the beta mess up the previous version of Lightroom I have installed?
Yesterday on NAPP Lightroom 2.0 BETA Learning Q&A page - http://www.photoshopuser.com/lightroom2/faqs.html - they said the following:
“When is the real version of Lightroom 2.0 shipping? Sometime in June 2008.”
But today I looked again and that statement has been removed so obviously it isn’t going to be June. The BETA runs out in August 2008 so I would suggest sometime in August.
Well….since I never could get 1.0 and its updates to not continuously freeze lup perhaps this new one will work but I’m not holding my breath.
What about backup features? Have there been any enhancements to provide easy ways to backup perhaps one or more Collections to DVD and have Lightroom manage the issues of how many files fit on each DVD and how many DVD’s will be needed? Perhaps it could also store the associated edit and other LR data on the first or last DVD so that the Collection(s) could later be viewed or imported by Lightroom if needed with any associated modifications, groupings etc.. that were made in LR. If the collection you are trying to restore, already exists in the current catalog LR could then warn you and ask if you want to restore with some new naming convention so that you can compare contents of collections and then easily delete the original or the restored collection if appropriate. That said… the original files should be stored on the DVD in a standard way so that they can be recovered without the use of lightroom as well.
Backing up source negative files seems to be one of the most crucial issues for digital photographers and it would be nice to see some rich features that support easy bulk backup, and make it just as easy to cut multiple versions of those same backups for things like local and off site storage. I hope there are some cool hidden surprises that are intended for V2.0 in this regard even if they are not being revealed as part of the public beta.
Oh, and I also hope they did something to fix the pesky issues that arise with keywords and capitalization. It is very annoying finding out that you are ending up with 2 different and separate sets of photos based on the fact that the one instance of the keyword is capitalized and then the inteli-sense version finds the keyword but doesn’t necessarily use the same case.
The new features that are mentioned sound great.
Hi Scott
Great new function on Lr 2.0
Is it possible to export the slideshow function in an other way instead of only the Pdf format?
Will this come any closer to having a DAM program period without having to use third party Digital Asset Management. No I don’t mean partial or almost like Bridge but a fast access and fast cataloging software. I still look at Lightroom as a different but same CS3 / Bridge but faster and less featured in processing.Stay Focused Adobe, as the above poster pointed out lightroom 1+ is great but still has plenty of little bugs. CC
I am relatively new to LR, but think it is a great tool. None of the comments I have seen about LR2 mention the Web Module. Are there enhancements there as well.
One feature I would find particularly valuable is the ability to export a web album with size specifications so the resultant album could be integrated into an existing web page. I do not believe LR 1.3 has this capability, at least I have not yet been able to find it in a software setting or any of the manuals I have read.
What is the plug-in manager about? Will we be able to use Viveza and Color Effects within Lightroom?
LR does not allow printing author name in a corner, photo title and other non pre formatted information simultaneously. This workflow presentation bottleneck in exhibition grade printing is on of its major shortcomings. An upgrade to emulate CS3 Text features would be welcome. Currently CS3 is he only route to show quality presentation. Please include in final LR2.
Stop the Madness. I can’t learn to use all the features that are availble before the next version arrives. How about a trade-in option for the books and DVD’s I trash?
When should the full retail version be released? I downloaded the Beta version, but I’d like to wait to purchase until the new version is released.
Hello Scott - I guess this is the best way to pass along my many thanks to you for your help and guidance with everything from glass to PS. I am now retired and finally can devote whatever time I care to my 55 year hobby. One of your first bits of advice you provided was the 70-200 Nikkor which I have beaten into the ground - I have been a Nikon shooter since the F1 and have always been a “long lens” user. I progressed to joining NAPP which has been tremendous for a multitude of reasons! Then I really fell off the edge by subscribing to the Kelby Training Center — oh, I’ll just join for a month — Well, that didn’t work! Now I am hooked! What a tremendous training resource for “everything photographic!” I admit to being a rank beginner at the start of each day, but with your help, I am learning! Oh, by the way, I also own almost all your superb books — what a writing style!
Scott, Many Thanks for all your work!

Mr kelby,
I have purchased Adobe PSE 3 and 6 and just a few weeks ago bought LR2 along with your book LR2 for Digital and in the “Seven Things You Wish You Had Known…”
tried viewing your video as your suggested and it is of course fairly worthless to me and probably millions of other people who have a severe hearing impairment, which makes conversations really tuff!
Like your writing style in your books but really would suggest that you close caption your videos to assist those with hearing impairments.
Sincerely,
Douglas Settle
