Photoshop World Wrap Up
Apr. 7
6:07 am

I’m back from an amazing week in Orlando, and I just had a blast! Here’s quick recap:
- I’m happy to report that the crutches didn’t slow me down at all—especially since they arranged for me to have a little powered scooter to get me around the convention center. It was pretty quick too, and I was reprimanded several times for doing donuts and zig-zagging through the halls.
- We had two video crews going non-stop during the event, and we’re putting together a special “Taste of Photoshop World” online training class for KelbyTraining.com, with training segments from a number of different sessions, and highlights from some of the events. But here’s the cool thing: all NAPP members will get a special code so they can take the class for free! (not just members who attended Photoshop World—all NAPP members around the world). I’ll let you know as soon as the class is ready (and the code will be posted on the member’s Web site).
- It was great meeting so many NAPP members, and a lot of folks who read this blog came up to say hi, too. There was a real electricity in the air the whole week, and people were stopping me left and right to tell me they thought this was the best Photoshop World ever. This really means a lot to me, because we’re always trying to tweak, enhance and improve the learning experience, and the social and community aspects of Photoshop World as well.
- I taught three classes (Typography and Designing With Type, Photoshop Down & Dirty Tricks, and my Photoshop Seven-Point System). I also did a special bonus session on the expo floor (in the Peachpit/KelbyTraining theater) on how to get that gritty “Dave Hill” style effect. Since how you light your subject is such an important part of getting “the look,” I taped a special video of my live shoot (created exclusively for people who came to my bonus session), where I put the lighting set-up together from scratch, step-by-step, so they could see how to get the same look themselves.
- For the first time, we had live-blogging from the event, and if you haven’t checked out J-Bon’s (Jennifer Bontempi) photos and show coverage, here’s the link to see what you missed.
- One of our attendees (from Kaufman/Kramer productions) already posted some photos and comments from the show on his blog (make sure you scroll down and look at some of this own photography—this guy is pretty good), here’s the link.
- We also posted some official show photos (taken by photographers Brad Moore and Josh Bradley), to the Photoshop World site (here’s that link).
- Corey Barker did a Photoshop CS3 in Motion class that had a lot of people talking during the conference, and Laurie Excell’s pre-con workshop on learning how to use a digital SLR got lots of love, too! Vincent Versace pulled a rabbit out of his hat, with a session that turned the entire audience into beta testers for a new plug-in from NikSoftware that was announced in his session. They all left with copies of the plug-in to test and report back to Nik, plus he gave out so many goodies, that everybody who didn’t make the session sure wish they had.
- Microsoft had a show floor theater that was absolutely packing them in with presentations from a lot of big-name photographers and instructors, and Nikon’s theater was also jumping with people with Joe McNally doing location lighting sessions.
- Dan Margulis introduced two new advanced classes called “5-minutes to a picture postcard” using some amazing new techniques he’s developed, and a lot of people were talking about that.
- The Lightroom Track was packed (as you might expect), and of course, Adobe’s announcement during the keynote of Lightroom 2.0 Public Beta started the show off with a bang. (I’ll have a post tomorrow on my thoughts on Lightroom 2.0, here on the blog). Also, Adobe had demo sessions on Lightroom 2.0’s new features, along with lots of other cool Adobe stuff.
- The video track was standing room only, and we’re looking at ways to expand the video training for the next conference.
- Matt Kloskowski’s Layer Essentials workshop was a huge hit, and it seemed like every other attendee was carrying a copy of his new Layers book.
- This was the first time we had the Expo open all three days, and it stayed pretty well packed, so I imagine we’ll do it again in Vegas. We also had lot of new vendors exhibiting at the show, and some new product announcements as well, and between that and the four training theaters running the whole time, things were really buzzin’. We also had a lot of photography-related vendors there his time, and you could spot a softbox or umbrella in any direction you looked.
- We taped an episode of Photoshop User TV in front of a live audience, and it was the usual fun, chaotic, and crazy experience it usually is, but we wouldn’t change it for anything. We tossed out literally box-fulls of Photoshop User TV t-shirts to the crowd, and you could hear the cheering a mile away. The episode will air in two weeks (because of the requirement from Fox Business Network that we have our shows turned in two weeks ahead of schedule).
- Moose Peterson and Joe McNally wow’d the crowd with slideshows of their amazing work during the closing ceremony, and Dan Margulis and Deke McClelland gave the crowd a look at some of their techniques, and it really closed the show on a big high note.
- All in all, it was just an amazingly wonderful week. This was our biggest Florida-based Photoshop World ever, with our largest Expo yet, and we had more classes, more instructors, more new stuff, and just more fun than ever!
Our next stop is our West-Coast Photoshop World coming up in September in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino’s convention center, and if you didn’t make it to Orlando, I hope to see you in Vegas.

Thank you for preparing some training from this event for Kelby Training. For those of us, who due to disability, have problems travelling a few miles let alone getting on an jet and travelling across the Atlantic Ocean this is very much appreciated. It means we can be part of things too…
sounds like you guys had a LOT of fun! i wish i can make it to vegas! can’t wait to attend this next time!
Sounds like the conference was a winner!
In regards to the conference poster… Poor Dave & Corey… Don’t they know that the red shirts get killed off?

Luckily, I did get to attend the Orlando seminar and, although I knew it would be great, it went way beyond my expectations. I learned SO much in those three days. I have attended lots of different seminars before on a wide range of subjects and this, by far, exceeds any of the others! I only THOUGHT I knew what Photoshop could do before, having used it for years, but wow, it’s like a whole new program now. Thank you, thank you, thank you, to Scott and all of the teachers and staff who put on such a super conference! I could hardly wait to get in front of my computer and try out my new skills!! Hope I get to attend again next year!
Hey Scott. Thanks for a great seminar. This conference had the most value (bang for the buck) of any conference I’ve ever attended. Great instructors and great information. Thanks again. If you’re interested in some specifics of what I liked (and the 1 or 2 small areas of possible improvement), check out my brief review of it here:

Sounds like it was fun! There has been comments and photos about CS4 so can you give me an approximation for a release?Like late 2008 or early 2009?
Thanks
Iain
Photoshop World was even more wonderful than I had hoped. Each trainer was as open and sharing as anyone could want. Moose Peterson moved me to tears in each session he did. Joe McNally packed every moment of his sessions with information. What a high energy guy! Vince Versace is an incredible instructor! That guy Scott Kelby is amazing too!
The workbook will keep me learning for months.
Thanks for everything!
Hi Scott,
I spent the weekend catching up on the photos and news from the event. Everything looks amazing! Congrats on yet another successful conference!
I’m going a bit crazy trying to find out when Photoshop User TV is being broadcast on FBN. I’ve searched this site (and related links) and done a TIVO search on my Direct TV which comes up with nada.
Undoubtedly, this information is somewhere on this website but I can’t find it.
Any posters give me a hand? I want to watch!!!!
Have your event planner check Las Vegas for beach front property, its not on the West Coast. You know you have a poplular event when the rooms 3x in price during your event. I’ll try and make the drive from Los Angeles If the gas prices allow.
You were swamped every time I saw you at PSW, so I didn’t get a chance to say Hi in person. I expected to enjoy the conference, but I was blown away! I’m already making plans for Vegas. How about a “Strobist” track with Joe McNally and David Hobby? Joe’s “location lighting” class was in that vein already, and he did a lot of speedlight demos at the Nikon booth… just a thought.
A few more snaps of PSW 08:

Scott:
Just be careful out there with you blogging.

Boy does it $%#@ to have to come back to work today. Another funtastic PSW!!
Great job by all!

Scott, I had such a great time at the conference! I’m glad I got a chance to meet you and all of the other photoshop experts(that is except for vincent who is now an amateur
its really cool how accessible you guys are, just hanging out and chatting with people.
thanks
So what was the new software that Vinny was handing out?
I REALLY REALLY hope it is a UB version of the Nik Sharpener plug in. I can’t stand having to exit PS, change to rosetta mode, then go back in to PS to use their current version. CS3 has been out for a year now, and was out in beta long before that… no excuse to not have a UB version of Nik Sharpener out by now in my humble opinion.
Yes it is wonderful to access the Photoshop World experience from home for those with disabilities who find it difficult to travel distance. Add to this also being on an island and must cross channel first, with no other way to learn where I live. Still hoping one day to make Vegas though, and if Bert Monroy makes an appearance will try even harder to find a way as I adore his eloquent style and brilliance.
Hardest part is hearing about T-Shirts knowing everyone had chance to get one (but me) *sniffle* Bet they looked great too! :^) Will get one somehow… lol *she said plotting*
Glad you all had a great time at the show because I’ll be living it vicariously though you. Keep um’ coming!
Wow - I’m actually planning a 40th birthday trip from the UK to las vegas in September.
When is the show? Would be awesome to be able to combine the two!
Hey Scott, love the sound of this show and even more that there will be some stuff on the Kelby Training site, but do you think that you might bring the show to some of the big european cities like London / Dublin in the future? Now that really would be awesome!
Scott,
You need to bring back Photoshop World to Los Angeles at-least once every few years.
Wasn’t a PSW, but Dave Cross was just here in LA - excellent seminar.
Sounds like I missed a party!
Can you guys give any thought to putting on a Photoshop World in Detroit? I bet you could find a convention center for cheap since the Detroit economy is a little soft right now.
Pretty please!
The conference was awesome. I am so glad I was able to attend. I left with so many new tricks that I have already been applying to my images with great results. Your “Down & Dirty Tricks” and “7-Point System” gave me things that I could apply immediately without having to spend hours upon hours figuring out how to reproduce them.
I think the highlight was talking V into getting Matt to do the hula hoop contest at Midnight Madness and then helping Matt get payback. Great times.
Scott-
I wanted to start out by saying THANK YOU SO MUCH for the honorable mention on your blog. Chris and I thought it would be fun to document the “Long Road to NAPP” so-to-speak and we’re hoping that people get a kick out of it. We enjoyed the conference a great deal. I honestly learned more in 3 days than I had in my last year of college. (Visual Communication Major) The instructors were great, your classes were great, everything was simply top notch. You’ve got NAPP members for life, right here. Again, thank you for checking us out, and we look forward to posting more videos from our trip soon!

Scott, Thanks for the wrap-up. I enjoyed Photoshop World this spring and will be returning soon. I have to admit that I played hooky the last day and went to Disney World on Friday with my wife and son.
I just want to thank everyone involved for making Photoshop World Conference in Orlando such a great event for me. I felt like I was in Photoshop heaven. The classes were great and the conference experience outstanding. It was amazing having such fantastic educators, talented photographers, and amazing experts sharing their knowledge. It was a wonderful learning experience and well worth the money. Most importantly, I really had a lot of fun.
Sincerely,
T Winter
Okay, I get the picture… all you guys are some sort of club and I’m the outsider. Since no one answered my question, I’ll assume the TV broadcast is private, invitation only and I’ll give up trying to watch. Thanks.
