My Apple Aperture Conspiracy

“Obviously, since Scott’s in bed with Adobe, there’s no way he’d give Apple’s Aperture a fair audition.” –Trevor Carpenter
“…what about Apple’s Aperture? I don’t see how you can just ignore it when writing this kind of article. If you do, I begin to wonder if you’re simply being paid by Adobe? I understand the whole corporate sponsor thing, but I’d love to see you write about Aperture. It’s definitely a player in this space.” –Mike Fullerton
Ya know what’s nice? Waking up in the morning, and reading comments like these, which were posted yesterday as comments here on my blog. It really starts your day off right.
My post yesterday was addressing a comment I read on an evaluation form, from a Photoshop World Conference attendee. This attendee didn’t ask me about Aperture (he was a PC user anyway, and Aperture is a Mac-only product); he asked the difference between Camera Raw, The Bridge, and Lightroom.
I thought that answering his question publicly, might help some other people who had the same question, but clearly what I was doing was just perpetuating my secret conspiracy against Aperture; the same Aperture I wrote about on Monday in my “Top Five of Everything” where I listed other applications which I use, which included Aperture; the same Aperture I wrote about in February after the 2.0 update was released, where I wrote:
“I haven’t had a chance to play with the new version yet, (I hope to this week), but the improvements look pretty substantial and the initial feedback I’ve seen from existing Aperture users has been very positive.”
Adobe almost made me return my monthly corporate payoff check for writing that.
So, is this a cleverly orchestrated conspiracy against a program I readily admit that I use, or perhaps is the reason I didn’t mention Aperture in my post one or more of these:
- (a) I don’t know much about Aperture. The only thing I do in Aperture is print books. I export my photos from Lightroom as JPEGs; I import them into Aperture, layout my book, and hit the Send button. That is the extent of what I do in Aperture, so I can’t pass myself off as an “Aperture expert” and anything I say about Aperture beyond printing books would be just a guess. I’ve played around with Aperture, and it seems to have some very cool features, but honestly, I just don’t know enough about it.
- (b) This is the Photoshop Insider blog created for people who already use either Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Lightroom, or both. It’s not a digital imaging blog.
- (c) Aperture was totally irrelevant to the question I was asked (especially since he’s a PC user).
I haven’t written a comparison of Lightroom vs. Aperture because selling Lightroom isn’t my job—that’s Adobe’s job. My job is teaching Lightroom to people who already own Lightroom (though the fact that I teach and write books on Lightroom pretty much tells you where I stand). Besides, I’m not the guy you want doing a side-by-side comparison of the two; I am totally biased; I’ve already made my choice; I’m a Lightroom user–plain and simple.
I don’t want to take anything away from Aperture, because I know a lot of Mac users really like it, and I think that’s great, but I use Lightroom, so don’t look for much Aperture coverage here. In the same vein, I’m a Nikon shooter, so don’t expect a lot of Sony or Olympus camera coverage here either, even though I’m sure both make perfectly fine cameras. It’s not an indictment of any of them; they’re just not what I use.
I hope that helps folks who post mean-spirited accusations about me understand where I’m coming from in this whole “Lightroom vs. Aperture” conspiracy theory.

Scott! Hoo boy, first of all, I wasn’t expecting such a negative response to what I thought was a simple question. Maybe I didn’t do such a good job writing it. My bad. If you recall, I also said I was a big fan of your work in the same comment (which you didn’t fully quote ;-). I don’t think there is a better photographer writing about photography working today. Second, I apologize if I came across as attacking you. That was not my intention at all and if that’s how I came across I’m sincerely sorry. I also apologize to your other readers.
I think there are three players in this space: Photoshop, Lightroom, and Aperture (and I use all three). So I think comparing this to Nikon vs Canon is a bit off because photographers can use all three programs easily and simultaneously, but switching between Canon and Nikon is several orders of magnitude more difficult because of the investment in all the gear. We’re talking hundreds of dollars vs thousands of dollars (or tens of thousands), right? Not to mention the physical space the gear takes up. Not really a fair comparison, imo.
Really, my fantasy here, is to see a new book “Apple’s Aperture Book for Digital Photographers” by Scott Kelby on my shelf. And to read about cool tips and techniques for Aperture on your blog. I would love to see you dive into Aperture like you have with Lightroom. I think everyone would benefit tremendously from this. I know I would.
Again, I’m a big fan and I really appreciate your work. I have many of your books on my shelf. And I’ll be more careful with my commenting going forward.

Yeah, a blog post on Photoshop Insider that doesn’t feature Apple Aperture after this history - good lord! The guys must live in caves…next thing you know they’ll be claiming the Catholic church needs to cross-preach in Jewish!
It’s not like your secretive about what software preferences you have. I wonder what my gear preferences are on http://www.canonblogger.com? Could it be that I am not giving Sony, Olympus, Nikon and the rest equal time? Scott, you needn’t reduce yourself to even respond to such charges. They just aren’t worth the energy.
Having said that - I do like your response!
Wow, why so many negative people out there?
Their photos must not be coming out good!?
Keep up the great work, the majority of us appreciate it!
Bravo!
Hi Scott,
I got into photography several years ago, but never knew what to do with my images until I went to a seminar in Dallas Texas in December of 2006, which time I joined NAPP. The tutorials that I have seen and soaked up from your organization are very masterfully done. People tell me that I am good. I think I suck. When Matt told me in Vegas last September that we all have “I suck moments”, I realized that I wasn’t alone and that maybe I do have some creativity.
Regardless, I owe most of what I have learned about Photoshop and photography from you guys.
If I wasn’t going to Hawaii in August with Matt & Dave, I would have joined you in Orlando and in Vegas, but I’ve been to both of them and Hawaii has always been a dream.
Thank you and yours for your motivation and tutorials. Everyone else is just jealous of your success.
See ya,
Mike
Dear Scott !!
I don’t see the name Photoshop anywhere in the name Lightroom….
So why in the world are you pushing Lightroom down our throats…. maybe it is that Lightroom works seamlessly with Photoshop, just like all the other Adobe products…. and also, most, if not all Adobe products will cross platform….. don’t get me wrong, I was a die hard windows user until Vista… and now have more Mac’s than PC’s. I love my macs and their software but I don’t expect apple to do everything the best…. admittedly Apple is a hardware company, do they make good software, yes they do…. but Adobe is a Imaging software company and they do that better than Apple, Microsoft and a whole lot of others….. KEEP THE FAITH BROTHER!!!!!!
Very well put….I actually use both. I think (like all apple products) aperture is just slightly more intuitive, however lightroom has strong editing tools in side the program. For instance I tried out your Dave Hill tutorial you had up a few weeks ago and while it worked perfectly in Lightroom it was a definate no go with Aperture. Now that Lightroom 2 beta has come im a complete fan of that but I will still use Aperture 2 just its easier for my workflow and I can organize it better. I have tried Lightroom and just like everybody else…..its all about preference. Honestly, my preference is both. Lightroom for the unbelievable print module and unbelievably powerful editing tools. Aperture is still my main program for standard work flow and simple light, exposure, hightlight and darks fixes…..ect.
Your post made perfect sense to me. You were answering a specific question.
If question had included Aperture I’m sure you’d have included that in the answer.
As always, thanks for all that you do.
Scott,
As a new reader,I thoroughly appreciate your blog, great information, and insights on Photoshop. Hmmm….I think that’s why I popped by here in the first place. Probably had something to do with all of your books I’ve been reading….just wanted some more great information on Photoshop & Lightroom…..
Photoshop Insider, right?
As a long time blogger I can say you get these kind of comments here and there. I filter, sort, and sometimes remove comments. Occasionally, I answer them as well (the ones that really set me off).
Those are usually the “fun” answers!
Thanks so much for the blog, and for your books. I recommend them to everyone who asks about my photos and tech work. Keep it up!
well put Scott. love your style. Pinache must be your middle name. Really appreciate all the work here at the blog, read it daily(except for Wednesday as we double read Thursdays). All the best to you, your family and to those that impacted making you, you.
cheers,
Scott, you are my hero. Thanks for pointing out some of the silly things people do and say. I work in retail (hate it) and deal with it all the time. I use Lightroom simply because my powerbook is only a 1ghz G4, so Aperture is not an option for me, I would like to try it but oh well.
Someone complaining about you writing about 98% Lightroom is like someone walking in to a Apple store to complain about their Sony walkman. It’s just stupid.
Scott, you keep up the fantastic work, and keep doing what you do.
Shawn R
If I may allow me to be devil’s advocate, the poor guy just didn’t quite know how to express himself what he probably meant to say is: Dear Scott, since you always* give your advise to all your readers we would like to know what you think about Aperture
*except when it involves your corporate check with Adobe
we sort of really would.
Hey Scott…
Sorry for the all your troubles.
I had a similar problem a month ago, when I wrote about a bad experience with SPIRIT airlines, and some of my readers didn’t agree with my point of view.
Anyway… Great post.
Paulo
Scott,
People like this don’t really deserve your time sending the justification as they are the usual 1% who spoil things for the masses. As many posts have said everything connected to yourself has Photoshop attached to it so it’s natural that you are blogging about PS products. I find your writing funny informative and above all honest. As a reader of your web stuff and buyer of 3 of your excellent books I’m very gratefull to you for your contribution to my digital imaging education. At the end of the day we’re all adults (well most of us anyway) and if you say this is good that is great we don’t all rush out and buy it because the great Scott Kelby says we should. What most of us do is have a look and compare with other similar products and then decide which is best for our particular need. If you were on a kickback from Adobe I’d be in the camp that said you deserve it but as I feel you’re an up front honest guy who says he’s not holidaying in Adobe’s luxury villa in Hawaii for free then I believe you.
One last point I REALLY want the Really Right Stuff ball head you tell us to buy in your book (those free Merc SL’s drive well don’t they?) but my wife would rather spend the money on a holiday. If you could give me some pointers as to how I convince her otherwise I’d be most gratefull and who knows they may upgrade you to a Bentley! :-))
Cheers,
Phil.
I concur with so many others that have already commented Scott. I am also a blog author and some of the comments I receive also fail to see the big picture (or even pay attention to the actual post).
Especially in the case of your blog, for every two comments like that, there are hundreds from people that do pay attention and take away great key learnings from the things you talk about.
Thanks for all you do!
This is for Charlie in post #56 who said, “I don’t see the name Photoshop anywhere in the name Lightroom….” I triple read your post to make sure you weren’t just being sarcastic, and I don’t think you were, so I feel I need to tell you something…
The official name of the product is ADOBE PHOTOSHOP LIGHTROOM.
You seem like a really good guy and I just felt you needed to know that before you posted that same statement in some other forum and it was followed by a hundred posts calling you a dumbass or some other mean characterization. You’re amongst friends here on Scott’s blog, so it’s OK!
Just wanted to say thanks for all that you do put out for free Scott, I have learnt a lot from this and Matt’s site. I made my choice of product long ago and then searched out info on the Web, finding both your sites.
I now own The 7 point system, Digital Photography 1 & 2, your lightroom book, your channels book, ‘The Moment it Clicks’ and Dave Cross’ Photoshop finishing touches book. I also joined NAPP (and I am thinking about Kelby training and Matt’s Layer’s book).
Have you done well out of this? Not as well as me! The progression in my photography and post processing work over the last couple of years is startling. I realised this, just the other day when looking for an old photo.
Pretty much everything I have learnt has basically come from your ‘crew’ or from a Nikon Forum I read (www.nikon1d.net)
Thanks for everything and please keep it up! And as they said in Rome Noli illegitimi carborundum!
Although after 60+ posts here…you don’t really need another. But reminds me of a PS class I taught where a student kept chiming in about how iPhoto was so much easier to use than PS.
I’m sure by now, with all the other supportive comments people have made you don’t need another one letting you know that you do an awesome job not only with this blog, but in all that you do for the photoshop user community; but I thought I’d drop a line anyway. You rock! I find your blogs, books, and video training very helpful and inspiring. Thank you for helping me be a better Photoshop user.
Scott,
You SHOULD be getting a paycheck from Adobe - your incredible books are the best instructions out there, and make using these products a breeze. The Apple folks should find their own uber-instructor…
ANSWER TO ROD
I was being sarcastic, The fact of the matter I saw Scott about four years
ago in Washington D.C., this actually changed my life. I’m a Print Shop Production Manager that hates his job, since then, I have become a Pro Photographer, Photo Restorer, to the point this now competes with my Print Shop duties. I LOVE everything SCOTT KELBY, PERIOD!! I read his books, watch his videos, have been to Photoshop World and plan to go again, maybe this year (if I’m not to busy on a shoot), read his blog. I think your barking up the wrong tree, fido!!
SO that there is no misunderstanding Scot Kelby is my HERO, I am starting my second career because of his inspiration……. I might be a dumbass, but with a second career, that I love…….
THANK YOU SCOTT KELBY for being SCOTT KELBY
Scott - Great! Well put! thanks SO MUCH for all you do!
Scott,
You said you use Aperture for printing books. Does it do anything with regard to printing books better than iPhoto does? It appears from the Apple website that the two are equivalent in this regard. I’m using iPhoto currently, but I’d consider purchasing Aperture if there’s a benefit I’m missing out on in the book-printing department.
Thanks in advance,
Phill
