Hi everybody! Hope you had a great weekend. Before we get to the news—-just a quick note to everybody who posted a comment on Friday; just my humble “thanks.” It means a lot, and reminds me why I do it. :)

Now, onto the news:

  • Teaching Update: I’ll be in New York City doing a special class on my “Photoshop CS3 7-Point-System” at B&H Photo’s Event Space on Monday, May 5th, and it’s FREE (you just have to sign-up in advance, right here). That whole week is “NAPP Week” at the Event Space, and Matt will be there on Tuesday, and then RC and Corey on Wed. and Thursday, and NAPP’s Executive Director Larry Becker will be there all week spreading the NAPP love, so it’ll be a week with a lot of learning and fun. NOTE: Matt and I are looking for a cool place to shoot in NYC on Sunday night, so if you’ve got any ideas, or connections for some cool shooting locale or studio, let me know.
  • Also, I’ll be in Hartford, Connecticut on Tuesday, May 13th for my Photoshop CS3 Power Tour seminar, and I hope you’ll join me there. It’s $99 for the full day (or $79 if you’re a NAPP member), and we’re going to have a blast, so I hope you’ll come out and spend the day with me. Here’s the link with info, and how to register.
  • David duChemin (of the popular PixelatedImage.com blog) was down at NAPP Headquarters on Friday, and we snuck in a quick shoot over at the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks, and the photo above shows David in “mid-sponge shoot.” It was fun kicking around with just one lens; my 18-200mm VR, but the highlight of the day was the moment at which David (a really terrific guy, by the way), said, “I don’t have the right lens for what I wanted to do with that last shot.” We both laughed, and went back to shooting sponges (Hey, it beats a day at the office any time). Thanks David, for a really great day!
  • Our buddy David Hobby, and his blog the Strobist.com was featured in an article in USA Today (and it includes a photo of David himself, with strobe in hand). Besides the article, it includes two videos (including one on shooting with four strobes), so you’ve got to check it out right here.
  • We posted another cool new class on KelbyTraining.com last week; Richard Harrington’s “Photoshop and After Effects for Wedding Photographers.” Rich’s class just kill at Photoshop World, and this is one from his “most requested” list, because it’s one of those classes that just puts money right in your pocket. Here’s a link to the lesson guide, and you can watch a free sample lesson there as well. (NOTE: don’t know if you’ve noticed, but we’ve been adding at least one new course every single week, and we’ve got a LOT more coming, and some announcements of new instructors coming on board as well. Lots of exciting stuff happening).
  • If you’re into travel photography, check out The Travel Photographer’s Network, which looks like a very cool site, and online magazine dedicated to travel photographers. I just started digging around it in, and it look pretty sweet. Here’s the link.

That’s it for this Monday. Have a kick-butt day, pretend it’s Friday, shoot with the wrong lens, and if you get really desperate—look for shots that are “Sponge Worthy.” ;-)

Sponge Worthy! You know, I kept my mouth shut all day about that one. Sigh. No act of discretion goes unrewarded.

      Thanks, Scott.

      Hi Scott:
I could recommend going down to Robert Wagner Park to shoot some big sky Hudson River scenes at sunset, and then walking up along the walkway to the boat basin at the World Finance center. Great scenes of yachts, open sky and new large vistas of land and the hudson river often filled with sailing boats. You can’t hear any traffic sounds in this area and the views are panoramic views of the Hudson river. Also people in the park are always colorful.

Wish I was still living in NY - I’d definitely go to the activities at B&H - I am sure you’ll get lots of suggestions. As for the “Sponge-Worthy” reference, absolutely hysterical! Just goes to show you the inroads a certain NBC show of he 90’s has had on our cultural lingo! I wonder how many others will get it…

      Hey Scott:

B&H doesn’t seem to have the May 5th event listed. Any idea why?

      Scott,
B&H has NONE of the events listed for the week of May 5. Might want to let them know.

      Scott,
Is B&H planning any specials for NAPP members during NAPP week? I am in the market for a d300 and amwondering if it would be worth the drive up from Baltimore. I won’t be buying it locally, to avoid our new 6% sales tax.

Good Morning Everyone! Please check the B&H Event Space website now, Scott’s event is live and accepting reservations. Also- we are back from our Passover holiday- so if you have been itching to get your gear fix, B&H is back and ready to serve you.

If you were wondering what a B&H guy does on a 10 day Passover break, I spent it scanning 23 gigs worth of 442 scanned images. So now I have a huge folder of so many images, yes Ill be paying attention to the Light Room class to see how far LR will take this project and when CS3 is going to take over. Can you say wacom tablet and dust editing? Did I mention that ICE wont work with tech pan?

Enjoy NAPP week at B&H- Thanks!

If you would like to make a trip to Staten Island, I have my great location for shooting Working Harbor shots and lots of Tugboats…if the tide is right, there could also be a lot of Container ships coming in and out. You can almost reach out and touch the ships at this location. Also at this spot is one of my favorite restaurants, R.H. Tugs, where you can sit outside and photograph while you eat.

Dear Scott, I have an official version of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for Windows and when I try to download an update 1.4.1 the website seems to be under maintenance/doesn’t come on at all. My colleagues face the same problem since 1.4.1 was released. Could you please advise me on this matter if it is possible? Many thanks. Manuel

      Scott:
You should call Jay Maisel and get him to let you shoot from his rooftop in The Bowery. The shots of his I have seen from that locale are very special and he is a great story teller to boot.

Speaking of photographing sea creatures… Have you ever tried underwater photography? We know from your blog that you will not ingest anything from the sea, but what about using your amazing camera skills while submerged and then telling us all about it?

Great. Just when I’m in California for the week. Serenity now!!

You could take the ferry over to Hoboken and shoot from the Sinatra park that’s on the edge of the Hudson. Great view of the Manhattan skyline, and Hoboken has a bunch of great restaurants and live music.

Hello Scott. I am a fan of your books. The Digital Photography Book in particular was my favorite. Anyway, after reading your blog regarding New York City, I invite you to visit my site for ideas on where to shoot while in town or drop me an email.

      Thanks!

Some of these are admittedly a little cliche but good shots can still be had…

Staten Island Ferry — a free ride across the harbor and back.

Top of the Rock / 30 Rockefeller Plaza observatory — last elevator up is at 11 PM

NY water taxi or NY Waterway ferries– early evening views of Manhattan and surroundings; fees vary

Chinatown and Meatpacking Districts for human-spotting, atmosphere, dining

I agree with ivoryhut about making your way out NYC to Jersey to get some great NYC landscape images. I just threw together some places I have taken shots from using Google Maps. They are more general areas to shoot from. Here is the link…

      http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=110419928189867387990.00044becc50ddd8a5ca30&ll=40.735551,-74.024162&spn=0.175859,0.4216&z=12

None of these places are more than a few minutes from the city. I am sure you will have a great time no matter where you shoot from. Hope to see you at B&H.

Have you seen Sky TV’s wedding channel? I happened to run across this after seeing a reference on a Wedding Photographer’s blog. He was interviewed at the London Wedding Show.

      Greetings Mr. Kelby!

I am all registered and eagerly awaiting the 13th! I can’t wait to see your seminar in Hartford. While I’m sure you have a maxed out itinerary - keeping in line with those above, I’d invite you to explore my neck of the woods - Litchfield county in CT (Sharon, Lime Rock, Salisbury, Kent, Cornwall in particular). Covered bridges, mountains, lakes, rivers and exploding spring foliage - perhaps cliche, beautiful nonetheless.

Congratulations on the success of the Digital Photography books, I know my copies are well worn. Thank you so much for all you do and your amazing energy and enthusiasm!

      Doug

ps. I’m in a chair and have an assistant who travels with me, it never occurred to me, but should I purchase a pass for her too? I don’t want her stuck outside. :-)
