Thursday News Blast
May. 15
5:58 am

It’s Thursday, and I’m back, baby! Here’s waz up:
- First, thanks to everybody who came out Tuesday (over 500 of you) to my first ever seminar in Hartford, Connecticut, including Marcin Grzybek, (shown above), who went and had this custom t-shirt made to wear to the seminar. I met so many great folks (including a lot of folks who read this blog; a quick shout out to Jeff, Doug, Bob, Joe and Joe, and Alicia). We’ll definitely be coming back to Hartford in the near future (great town, great facility, and lots of great, really enthusiastic Photoshop maniacs! I loved it!) In a semi-related note; Rob over at Towner Jones Photography (the guy who set up the CafePress site with the slogan available on t-shirts), said they are selling like hotcakes!
- Each Thursday we post a new online training class at Kelby Training.com but today we’ve posted two; Photoshop Layer Styles (link), taught by the amazing Corey Barker, and “From Photo to Graphic Art” (link) from Photoshop World instructor Lesa Snyder King. Plus, this last past week we had the famous Rick Sammon in for an entire week of live on location classes, shooting out in the field, and we’ll be getting some of his classes up shortly. Check out the new stuff right here.
- Make sure you check out this week’s episode of Photoshop User TV as our in-studio special guest is David DuChemin (from the Pixelated Image), and he gives some great tips on travel photography. Here’s the link (you can watch it right there online).
- I saw a really cute post over at SelectedPixels.com about me blogging about them a week or so ago, and what they call “The Kelby Bump.” Here’s the link.
- A great post over at the Hirlpoo blog about photographers getting harassed for taking photos, called “The Crackdown is Coming,” (which includes an account of my Marriott Marquis security guard thingy), but more importantly; there’s a link there to download a PDF about a photographer’s rights to shoot in public places. Definitely worth checking out (and downloading); right here.
- New Riders (the folks who publish my “Photoshop CS3 Book for Digital Photographers,” and who are part of the Peachpit Press family), are hosting the 2nd annual, “Voices That Matter Conference,” coming up June 10-13, 2008 in Nashville, Tennessee. The conference features a who’s who of Web Design authors and trainers, including Garr Reynolds (who wrote the smash hit book, Presentation Zen), and Steve Krug, author of the bestselling Don’t Make Me Think!, among others. Here’s a link for more details.
- Also, today is “Back Up Your Lightroom Catalog” Thursday, so if you haven’t backed up your catalog in a while; go under the Lightroom menu (on Mac), or the File Menu (on PC) and choose Catalog Settings. From the Back Up pop-up menu choose “Next Time Lightroom Starts Only” then Quit Lightroom, and relaunch. When it asks if you want to backup the catalog, click Backup. You’ll sleep better tonight.
That’s it for today, gang. We’ll see you tomorrow with some more stuff!

Looking forward to those Rick Sammon classes.
Your blog rocks Scott! Keep up the good work.

Scott,
Just a quick note. I had a great time at the seminar in Hartford. You were really fantastic. I was also very impressed with your support staff. Debbie,Jacki ect. Professional to the max ! Looking forward to more seminars in Hartford.
Thanks again,
Rich

Hi Scott,
How can we keep up with all of your online training if you post a new one each week? Kidding, I haven’t had time to log in for more than a week now. Great job to all on the lessons.
I must be a rebel. I shoot Canon and use a PC. I bought the Windows Vista book from Matt and Kleber. Excellent book. I especially like the “Who is this book for?” reference in the introduction. Fits me perfectly. I mainly bought the book to help me give tips to my classes of Windows Vista and Office. The main two things I preach are file management and backup, backup, backup, and everything will come. Students (all of us) should strive for resuts and not perfection.
A personal thanks for your response to my Monday comment.
Thanks a lot NAPP!!!
Mike
What ever happened to the PhotoshopWorld highlights class for Kelby training? Is that still coming?
To Stephen:
Our Video Crew has been working on it for weeks (it’s a bigger job than you’d think), and they’re getting pretty close to having it wrapped up, so I think we’ll be seeing it pretty shortly. I can’t wait to post it (it’s the first time we’ve ever done anything like it, so I’m excited to see how it comes out).
Many thanks,
-Scott
As much as I like the T-shirt that says Taking Photographs using a Tripod is not a crime, I like your shirt better.
I’m going on a Photowalk tonight with the Fargo-Moorhead Camera Club, I have my tripod attached to the backpack with everything else.
Now, Fargo isn’t the Marriott or NYC, so I’m not expecting too much trouble.
Come to Fargo! Where you can walk freely with a tripod!

Hey Scott,
This part of my comment has nothing to do about photography or photoshop, but Tee Shirts - Interested in unique non photo tee shirts, check out - http://www.mentalfloss.com/store/home.php?cat=103
Now the photography related comment -
They also have some interesting ( well I think so anyways) photography related post on their blog - http://www.mentalfloss.com/search/?q=photography&site=mentalfloss&btnG.x=25&btnG.y=8
Thanks for the link to the Photographer’s Rights pdf. If only the photographer at the Corleone wedding had known about it. He could have prevented Barzini from confiscating his film. And the guy who was taking pictures of license plates in the parking lot could have brought charges against Sonny for breaking his camera. It’s a good thing to know you have the law on your side.

The Hartford seminar was my first and I was not disappointed at all. Well worth the C note for a newbie like myself. How about that ballroom? Big enough for an NFL game, or Arena, at least. Looking forward for to the return visit to Hartford. Thanks for a great day.
Gotta agree with Dan. Nice shirt, Scott. Thanks for promoting good music.
Great Tee Scott!
When you did your massive Top 5 of everything a few weeks back I was going to ask you to post your top 5 albums?? Can you do that for your next list? Hope the Steely Dan make it in there somewhere!!!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bribe Joe Mc Nally to do more wireless flash stuff with the small strobes. Learn so much with his last lesson set but drooling for more!
Looking forward to Rick Sammon! Have a few of his books too!
Any change of a class in Ireland this year??! Pretty please??!
Dermot.
Scott,
Your seminar in Hartford was a blast! Enjoyed it beyond words - it was also an absolute and genuine pleasure to meet you. I was really surprised with how quickly the day went. Your humor and teaching style kept even my assistant laughing and engaged and she *was* not a photoshop gal, think you changed that. I would encourage even seasoned photoshop users to attend as there is so much detail in what you present, I believe everyone will take away more than a few, “Ah-Ha” moments.
Thanks again for coming to Hartford - look forward to you or any NAPP function here again. Your crew was top tier - kind and helpful! Eagerly awaiting your (or any NAPP) return engagement in Hartford.
Now, Back to my Russian art (my latest masterpiece is in my NAPP portfolio)
See, I finally left the convention center…
Doug
Hey Scott,
Loved the Hartford seminar! It was the best $99 bucks I ever spent. I learned so many new things. It’s not everyday I get the time to devote that many hours to just learning Photoshop, but it sure paid off!
Hope you guys will be back soon! I’m looking forward to it.

Hey Scott. This is not really related to the blog entry, but I wanted to make a suggestion regarding the link to your gear. The “updated” notice has been there for some time now. Or maybe it feels that way since I read your blog on a regular basis… But how about putting the month and year on there?
Cheers,
John
Scott,
Totally off topic but since I know you are such an apple fan boy here is a photo the new Apple Flagship Store that opened in Boston today. Largest in the US second largest in the world. Looks like you have someplace new to visit next time you are in town

I know this has nothing to do with the subject of this post, but since you were just in NY, I thought i would pass this on.

Hey Scott,
Thanks for giving me a shout out in your post about your seminar in Hartford (I was one of the attendees who came up to say they were a fan of the blog).
It’s funny, during every break you had a line of people waiting to talk to you at least 10 deep, such that even during our 15 minute breaks you were still working.
I would be concerned that by the end you’d be a little burnt out on signatures, chit-chat, et cetera. However, when I got the chance to meet you after the seminar I was very pleasantly surprised to see how friendly and down to earth you are.
Keep it up, I have no doubt it’s one of the many reasons you’ve come this far
Best of luck, and come back to Hartford anytime,
Jeff
Scott,
How about a seminar in the great state of Alaska? I’m sure we’ve got something you could photograph, right?
I’d love to come to one of your seminars.
How about it?
Glen
Scott I have been testing some spider type lights for a client of mine. and they were not putting out enough light with out going to a high ISO. What was your ISO, Shutter speed and F stop???
You and your staff are ausome… Keep it up… Yes I have 3 of your books.
Thanks

PS: Two things I always include in my lectures are..
1. The meaning of of the word Photography. What statement are you making about your subject and 2. The heart can’t desire what the eyes can’t see.
