Thursday News Update
Before we get onto the news, I just have to thank Vincent Versace for yesterday’s amazing Guest post. He was able to move us with words in the same way he does with his images, and it was truly an honor to have him kick off Guest Blog Wednesday in such a classy, thought-provoking, and inspirational way. Thank you, my friend. Now, onto the news:
- I heard today from NAPP’s Executive Director Larry Becker that we now have a special 20% off NAPP member discount in place for the very popular “Photomatix” HDR software that everyone’s raving about. So, if you’re a NAPP member, head to the member’s site for details and your discount code. If you’re not a member, and you just want to check out Photomatix, here’s the link to their site.
- Thanks to John Paul Caponigro, who brought the two “Ophan Works” copyright bills currently before congress to my attention. According to JP, “…if passed these two bills will adversely affect copyright laws. Both define “abandoned†work far too loosely. The less problematic bill puts the onus on the artist to register images with the Copyright office not just once but twice. The bills haven’t gone through—-Now is the time to act. Contact your representatives now. Phone, mail, fax, and email are all effective – in that order.” Here’s a Web site with info on how to contact your Congressional representatives. (Thanks to John Paul for sending this our way!).
- Also, John Paul wrote a comment yesterday about Vincent’s Guest post that was just terrific, so if you get a chance, scroll through the comments and take a moment to read his thoughtful response which builds on what Vincent was talking about.
- David Hobby and Joe McNally were both teaching in Dubai recently, and they had a video camera, and well….you just got to see the video for yourself, because it’s off the hook. They use this huge “cluster” of Nikon SB-800 flashes out in the desert for a live model shoot, and the results are just stunning. Plus, the video is very well-done, and you see how they set-up the shots, and well…like I said, you just gotta see it. You’ll find the article, and the video clip right here.
- One last thing: Corey Barker has a nice tutorial on this week’s Layers TV episode (hosted by Corey and RC) on a very practical way to use Photoshop’s Vanishing Point Filter, plus as a guest they have Christie Winter, (one of NAPP’s in-house designers) showing her own Photoshop technique on how she created this year’s annual “Hot Tips” cover for the magazine (it’s pretty cool). You can watch it right online at LayersMagazine.com
That’s it for this Thursday. Hope you all have an absolute kick-butt day!

Does anyone know where I can find more info on the Orphan Works? I’ve spoken with several people about it and know I do NOT want it, but want to sound a little more educated when I talk to my congressman.
Glad your also bringing up this Orphan Works bill. It’s pretty crazy, and people need to act.
I’ll second Photomatix… It’s a great program that I use with nearly all my HDR portraits.

Hi Scott,
Yes Photomax does rock. However, I bought it Monday before you announced the discount. Oh well, I still feel it was worth Full-Price.
See ya,
Mike
FYI Scott - We’ve been discussing Orphan Works in the NAPP forums since May 6th… We also have a grass roots campaign building, and many forum members have already contacted their legislators…
Go NAPP forums!
Links to the two bills:
Sen. Patrick Leahy is sponsoring the Shawn Bentley Orphan Works Act of 2008: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=s110-2913
Rep. Howard Berman, is sponsoring a similar bill in the house: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h110-5889.
Both of these have links to a status page, and according to the corresponding pages for these bills, it appears that both of these bills have been abandoned. The senate bill was scheduled for debate on May 15 (and my guess is that it wasn’t debated; there is no info about votes and no date scheduled for the next step), and the house bill was introduced on April 24, not yet to make it any further.
John here are a couple of links that might help you with information on the orphan works.

My main comment though is about Corey Barker he has some killer tutorials. Specially on his website. Planetphotoshop.com, I just don’t think the guy gets the credit he desevers at times. Glad to see Scott drawing attention to him. He has a lot to give in this field too.
Did I do something wrong that my post was removed? I looked for a email to see if by chance there was a reason for it but there was nothing. If I’ve done something wrong a notice would be nice so I know what not to do in the furture.
I received a very informative email about then Orphan works bill and places to go to get more info.
I am not going to paste all that here, But I did post it here.

Scott,
In order to act on the Orphan Bills you mentioned, it would be very helpful to have the bill numbers to reference when contacting our Senators and Representatives. Could you help us by providing these?
In your 22 May entry you tell us about a NAPP discount for Photomatix. yet when I go to the member discount center on NAPP, it tells me the discount expired May 21, the day before you told us about it… Did I miss something?
To L Lancaster:
It’s says May 21 of 2009.
-Scott
Scott you put the wrong address for Matt’s tuturial! You linked to his old (but awesome) edge effects tutorial and not his new brush stroke one. Edge effects on your mind? I just used that tutorial to convert a shot I wasnt happy with, and boy the transformation really works for this one I think:

For those of you looking for more information on the Orphaned Works Act, the members of NAPP are building a website devoted to informing the public on all legislative points as well as how to fight for amendments.
Currently, the site is in the beginning stages of building (aka - kind of a mess and even worse in IE as we just started building it this weekend) - but there are many of us that are working hard on it’s development so we hope to have it working correctly quickly.
For more information please visit http://www.defendyourart.com and bare with us as we continue to develop the site.
Thank you. And thank you Scott for mentioning this on your blog.
Dear Scott, just a short note I’d like to say a huge thanks to everyone at Napp, the tutorials are why I signed up but I have to say that the portfolios are why I return practically every day now. It’s fine to see a technique described but when I see what people do with those methods and the variety of their photographs I am simply blown away and consumed with envy! (of the best sort of course). I really can’t see any end to the possibilities of photoshop and now I am encouraging my 14 year old to mess with it, after all what will he be able to do when he’s as old and boring as me. Best wishes a Happy Scouser!
