Another idea I have seen not done by Scott is online saving of files on a server. I think because it is not practical to move such large amounts of data online due to slow upload speeds. And perhaps cost effectiveness?

Great Discussion. I am paranoid like so many when it comes to back up. I currently back up weekly onto 2 external hard drives.

I save my files in Nikon NEF and DNG formats. I do not embed the NEF into the DNG file. Is there any reason to save the NEF files? I have yet to go back and play with NEF files once I am done with the original editing and exporting to DNG.

[...] Backing Up You Stuff – Anyone who knows me will tell you I backup everything. Whether you fancy yourself as a photographer or not, you must backup your pictures. One thing that people always try to save in a fire is their pictures. In this day and age, it is really easy to have several copies. I will be writing about my backup process and steps later.
Your backup appoach offers great tips, Scott. I back mine up onto a Freecom external hard drive (which is reliable and cheap), and also take copies on DVD-Rs, for storing in DVD pockets in the back of photo albums. I also take a JPEG backup in Flickr just in case:

Can you tell us more about your home desktop setup? You mentioned that you only use it for photography and there's "no email, no fonts, no Word documents—a totally clean machine!". What does a totally clean machine include?

Just so you all know, the new DROBO is now FireWire 800 compatible (also 400). I use both Mac and PC so I bought a DroboShare that serves up your files over a wireless (or wired) network to either OS using the SMB network protocol. I love it.

Off site backup being obviously a requirement, my choice goes to automated online backup services such as KoffeePhoto. Its photo dedicated desktop software takes care of the upload of the pictures and, if needed, the restoration of the files. Nothing to care about.
