How To Get Exactly What We Want In the Next Versions of Photoshop, and Lightroom

By Scott on Thursday, May 29th, 2008 at 5:39 am | updates.

handsup2.jpg

Every time a new version of Photoshop or Lightroom comes out, we (the community of users) get a number of features that make our lives more fun, or make us more productive, or sometimes both.

But, of course, every time a new version of either one comes out, there are always those cries of “Why didn’t Adobe add [fill in the blank]” or, “I can’t believe we still don’t have [fill in the blank].” Unfortunately (for me anyway), I’m usually one of the ones whining the loudest about a feature that didn’t make it, or a feature that was changed (which is why Adobe often cringes when I call).

But my buddy Terry White and I were talking recently, and Terry floated an idea that I honestly believe would change all this, and finally give us exactly what we want in the next versions of Photoshop and Lightroom, and InDesign, and so on.

There’s only one major hurdle; Adobe would have to agree to it.

The only reason I’m even posting this idea, is because if there’s a company out there today that might consider it; it would be today’s Adobe, (which is a very different company than it was just a few years ago).

This is such a major departure from how things have always been done, that it has the power to change the way software is developed from this point on, and if Adobe pulled it off, the rewards for Adobe (and their stockholders) would be off the charts. Everybody would always upgrade to the new version because we’d all finally be get exactly what we want.

Here’s the plan:

Adobe sends an email to their registered user base asking them to tell Adobe exactly what features they want to see in the next version of Photoshop (or Lightroom, etc.), and then:

Adobe’s engineers have to agree to include ALL of the Top 10 most popular features in the next release. Period.

Only after they’ve added the top 10 most-requested features, can they then look at adding any of the 11 through 20 most popular features, or any pet projects (new ideas, new concepts, etc.) that they’ve been brewing up on their own.

Now, you might be thinking, “That’s impossible,” or “It can’t be done” but everybody was saying stuff like that before Thomas Knoll wrote the first version of Photoshop (he wrote it in one weekend, by the way). It’s only impossible until somebody does it.

Now, these Top 10 Features have to be somewhat reasonable; in other words, a feature couldn’t be, “Lower the price to $49,” or “Make it only use 20 MB of drive space” but it could be something like “Make it load 25% faster.” If that wound up being the #1 thing on the list, then Adobe would have to throw enough engineering muscle behind it so it did just that, because after all, “That’s the #1 thing our customers told us they want!”

How could they go wrong? How could they not sell a record-breaking number of upgrades, because the top 10 features would ALL be included in the next version.

Also, it’s entirely possible that the #1 thing Photoshop users want is something that would incredibly simple to add. But if you don’t ask—you’ll never know.

Now, just for fun, I’m going to do my own totally un-scientific “Photoshop Feature Wishlist Survey” and I need your input. Go ahead and post the features you’d like to see in the next Photoshop, and I’ll compile them into an online survey that we’ll post here next week. Then, you can come back by, click on the feature from the list you want the most, and we’ll see what “We” wind up choosing as our Top 10 Most-Wanted features.

I’ll make sure Adobe sees it (and will take the accompanying heat that opening up a can of worms like this usually causes me), and although this is totally just for fun, at least Adobe will get an idea of what at least some of us really want. If the #1 thing isn’t on their list, maybe now it will be.

The Power of 10

I’ll get the ball rolling with a few things I’d love to see in the next Photoshop:

  • I want to see all filters get a User Interface makeover, so they’re more like the Smart Sharpen filter, with a very large preview, the ability to save your favorite settings to a pop-up menu, and basic and advanced modes to hide features most folks won’t ever use.
  • I want a “Do the last step again” keyboard shortcut, that will do whatever I just did again. If I add the Shift key, I want it to do my two last steps again. If I add the Option (Alt) key, it does my last three steps again. It’s like an instant, temporary action, built on the fly as I work.
  • I want a better color picker; one where I can click on it, and a list pops down of my favorite colors and I can choose a new color with just one click and hold; and not have to bring up a separate dialog, or keep a palette open.
  • I want to be able to build my own toolbar, with only the tools I want visible, and I want to configure the size and shape the way I want it.
  • I want a set of real painting tools like those found in Corel Painter.
  • I want some of the best “Kai’s PowerTools” filters updated and integrated into Photoshop using Photoshop’s user interface (rather than Kai’s).
  • I want the Info palette readout built right into both Curve and Levels, so I don’t have to have two palettes open to do one job.
  • I want InDesign CS2’s pop-out panel design for managing my palettes.
  • I want Before/After’s like Lightroom built into Photoshop
  • I want Adobe to buy or license a really good noise reduction plug-in from a third-party developer (like Noise Ninja, or Noiseware Professional, etc.) and replace the one in Photoshop with it.
  • I want Adobe to hire an absolute kick-butt high-end designer to go and replace every default Layer Style Preset, every default Action, every default shape, and every default brush with brand new, kick-butt, really usable ones.
  • I want Adobe to make ALL of Photoshop work like Camera Raw and Lightroom, where you never have to wait for a progress bar, and all your edits are applied at one time; when you’re done with all your edits, so you work at full speed all the time.
  • I want the last setting you used in Layer Styles to still be in place when you go back (in other words; I want them to be “Sticky.”)
  • I want better filters. I want a Clouds filter that actually looks like clouds. I want a Glass filter that makes things really look like glass. I want a Dust & Scratches filter that really removes Dust & Scratches, and I want a Fibers filter that looks like real Fibers.
  • I want a better looking startup splash screen. I know that sounds silly, but I do.

I could go on and on, but know that I would gladly and wholeheartedly give up getting any or all of these, if it’s not what the Photoshop community chose as their “Top 10 Most-Wanted” features.

So, that’s the plan: post your own ideas here; I’ll add the most popular ones to an online survey to go live next week, and then you can vote on your favorite ones, and if nothing else, at least we’ll see what we here all want. So let’s get to it! :)

I want the crop tool to look like lightroom, with the thirds and all. Yes, I saw that tutorial with default shapes grid, but why would I want to do that when it’s so easier in lightroom?

Oh yeah, I want a ‘grunge look’ filter. something opposite of dust and scratches, one that would add dust and scratches in some random fashion so it would look old and used. and again, I know you can do it with brushes, I do it with brushes, but well, I’m spoiled

Since you mentioned Lightroom, here are my wishes for Lightroom:
1 - Full SDK so I can finally use Neat Image (or whatever) without having to leave Lightroom
2 - Merge Library and Develop modules so I can double click on a thumbnail in the grid and have full Develop controls
3 - Support stacking across directories/subdirectories; I’d love to be able to reimport final TIFFS in their own subdirectory and have them stacked with the DNG originals
4 - Add a preference to prevent drag and drop from putting thumbnails into a stack when all I want to do is re-order
5 - Have checkboxes for filetype filtering (all filetypes) so I can selectively view DNGs, RAWs, TIFFs, JPGs or any combination of these

I just want one little fix. Still don’t know if it is Adobe related or Apple related. After my Leopard 10.5.3 update yesterday I was hoping there was a fix for that issue where when you switched spaces some selection tools in Photoshop start blinking between the selection tool and an arrow. It makes working impossbile, only after a restart of photoshop i can work again. Before the 10.5.3 udpate this happened always after a Spaces but now it happens after a number of Spaces switches. Please Adobe and Apple…fix this :)

    Hi

I would like to see some NODAL logic interface, like those we can find in the high end special effects compositing package. This logic always keeps the original info, and enables you to proxy (use of low rez temporary pictures), commit (render just a part of the process for speeding issues).
It’s like a very big and powerful scripting action, on all the process.

I’d love a better way (than the preset manager) to organize brushes, shapes, and styles such as AC/DC does.

I want the possibility to add filters (especially the sharpen filters) as an adjustment layer. I also want this filter layer to have the following options: “Always on top” and “Update only on idle CPU/update real-time”. The first one is pretty clear, the second one to avoid the risk of a computer slowing down if it isn’t a high performance machine and vice versa.

Actually I can think of two.

The first would be to reduce the file size of Layered PSD files by saving layers in PSD files as a metadata instruction set, as Lightroom does. The idea here is that instead of doubling your file size if you were too duplicate a layer, the PSD file would look at the background and know that layer one was a duplicate with say a blur filter and layer mask applied so when it saved, instead of having the background with all of its data and the blur layer with all of the same data only blurred, it would have the data from the background, then an instruction set so that when opened, Photoshop would recreate the layer and add the blur and mask instructions. This would hopefully significantly decrease file size and reduce the need to flatten images.

I know that my second wish won’t be very sexy, but I think that it is important given that defining metadata is becoming so important. I have been struggling to work out a system for defining metadata for my library of images. If Adobe could take the IPTC Core and make those selectable fields based on the IPTC Standard Codes instead of free format, it would make instituting a standardized Controlled Vocabulary a lot easier for photographers everywhere. Also it would be helpful if they could work with industry experts to provide more example Keyword sets to help photographers get started setting up their own keywording and controlled vocabularies. At the very least it would be nice if they could set up a framework like that which Katrin Eismann wrote about in the recent issue of Photoshop User Magazine.

Those are the two features that right now would help me out the most. That and slower version release cycles with more free incremental releases, so that I can start to feel like I am actually working with that version and mastering it before I have to upgrade. I don’t think anyone had a problem with the four years it took Microsoft to come out with Office 2007. I think if Adobe could come out with a completely solid next version of PS, then more people will be likely to actually buy a license of the software instead of, how shall we say this nicely, borrowing a version of the software from a friend or their employer.

Thanks for always championing the cause of Photoshop users everywhere.

The number one feature I’d like to see in the next versions of PS and LR is support for Linux based platforms. It’s about time. And I don’t see how it could be hard do to. And a lot of photographers could switch over from a lousy Windows OS and go Linux full out. Give me that and I’d pay whatever price they were asking.

I like the idea of designing my own Tool Bar.. at least taking the existing tools and placing them where I want them.

I use Feather Edges a lot and now it’s buried even deeper than before. Please bring it out of hiding!

I Lightroom I want a the Straighten tool to appear different. It can be so hard to se if you have hit the right spot. A bigger circle would be nice - also if it could snap to edges.

    1.
i would like to have a UI that allows to be changed “on a file” (and on a layer) bases. one simple example: allow to change the size of each layer in the layers palette individually. if you have 50+ layers (plus folders etc), some are “more” important than others. i’d like to make some “higher”/larger, some really small. this would be saved with the file.

    2.
include “virtual folders” in the layers palette. having lots of layers, it would be SO helpful to have virtual folders which show “all adjustment layers” in one folder, all “text layers” in another virtual folder etc etc. all regardless of where the real layers are and in what order they are stacked. this would allow very quick access to all adjustments (or all texts) without having any influence how the placement of the actual layers build up the final look.

    3.
make file info, metatags, keywords etc a palette. this way it can be part of your workspace and much easier to access and edit.

    4.
create a “smart color palette”. beside the main color palette, this additional window would automatically create color swatches based on the open image, analysing the image and creating the “top 10″ most used colors PLUS the “top 10″ most found hues in the image. another “top 10″ colors based on channel splitting.

    5.
remove “smart filters” and “smart objects” and make EVERYTHING smart. being “smart” should be the default, not like today. everything should be editable, always, anytime.

    6.
improve speed. used the smart blur filter lately? how about starting there. its simply tooooooo sloooooow.

i stop here, couldn’t make my mind for the other 4. i could however add another 100 - easily.

While your list is awesone and i would like to have all of this too sooo badly :) I have my own little wish that is: In the canvas size dialog why can’t i have the ability to control all 4 edges seperatly? not only height and width but left right bottom and top.. it would be so easy…

How about an attractive price for non-professionals? It’s the one thing that keeps me away from PS. I’m not saying 49,-, but something like 300 bucks would be a fair price for all.
Scott, do you really think all the people who read your books have paid over 1000 $ for a software they don’t use professionally? I am absolutely sure that Adobe could sell four times as many copies if it would cost about the same as Lightroom. Microsoft just extended their student version of Office to all private users, and it sells at 130 bucks. That makes people buy it who only had illegal copies before, because they wanted the software but couldn’t afford it.

Add ‘Clarity’ and ‘Vibrance’ to PS. Add more controls like these in Lightroom, to make photo editing easier.

Think about moving all these menu items (thousands I guess) in something like Office’s Ribbon. You can hide it, for sure, but easier and more one-click access is really necessary.

Allow me to add taskbar items (that I can just one-click) based on setting of my filters. Something like actions, but simpler to do and use. I would likely use things like: Normal Sharpening, Strong Sharpening, Downsize etc. So when I do repeatable things (but not multistep based like actions) I can just click the appropriate button.

I am big on the filters as adjustment layers. And shadow/highlight was born to be an adjustment layer!

I would also like to see the crop feature in photoshop be more like lightroom.. rules of thirds box with alternates and straighten tool without going into lens correction.

    I like Scotts ideas:
Better filters, Customizing tool bars, Filters makeover, and hire designer to make presets usable.

Also slower version release cycles would be great.

    Great list Scott,

Just to echo some of the thoughts of others:
    Most Important
    1. Meta data palette
    2. A Crop tool in PS that is movable like the one in LR
    3. Real dual monitor support in LR so the palettes can all be on the 2nd monitor
    4. Improve Noise Reduction (possibly it’s own palette?)

    Not as high a priority
    5. Change the default colors for things like layer strokes from red to black (or something more usable)
    6. Slider for adjusting layer thumbnail size (only three sizes right now)
    7. The virtual folders for layers is a cool idea
    8. A backup feature for PS (LR has this already for libraries) - possibly from Bridge?
    9. In general, a multi-backup feature (back up to your Drobo and a DVD or OWC drive) would be handy so you can have a redundant backup with a single function.

Could think of much more, but we’re trying to be realistic here…

I want virtual catalogs in Lightroom. I maintain multiple catalogs instead of one giant catalog. This allows me to keep my most current photos(catalogs) on my laptop and manages backups better (I don’t need to load last years photos every time I open lightroom). This prevents me from search across all my photos so I would like to be able to open multiple catalogs at once.

    ScottScott,

I just made a new post on my blog regarding the next couple of versions of Photoshop. I appreciate your positive attitude regarding Adobe and its desire to make user happy. But from the information I gathered from online sources (mostly Jack Nack and Johnny L.) Adobe already has a big agenda ahead of it dictated by Apple regarding Photoshop’s bit architecture (32 vs. 64). Granted this agenda will speed up Photoshop which will make users like us happy. Anyway, you and most of your readers may be aware of all the details but if not check out my comments: http://www.campphotoshop.com/Photoshop-CS4-is-everywhere

    REPLACE THE DEFAULT BRUSHES!!!!!!!!!!!

    SCOTT!!!!!!!

some of us use that leaf brush ya know!

In all seriousness though, the more photoshop can look and work like Lightroom the better. Since I got Lightroom I don’t work in photoshop as much because Lightroom can take care of 99% of my photography.

From a design point I still use PS and AI and ID. But if PSCS4 could operate more fluidly like LR does then I’ll be a happy camper.

I second the noise reduction idea. Many, many of the others are excellent as well.

    I’d add:
-Having it store history items between closes/re-opens.
-A better print interface. Something closer to Lightroom would be great.
-A better set of default Actions. Engaging some photographers and including actions that address their retouching workflows, etc.

    1. Another vote for customizable toolbars, and having more than one customizeable toolbar.

    2. Adobe could learn a lot from AutoCAD in several regards: Allow toolbars and pallettes to dock in any of the four sides of the screen. and I mean really dock. not just hover “near the edge” of the screen.

    3. PLEASE improve the functionality of the mouse! Many mice have five buttons. Allow photoshop to map functions to those buttons so we can make our lives infinitely easier.

    4. The mouse wheel should intelligently zoom in and out when rolling, and pressing the middle mouse button (wheel) should pan. If anyone has ever used autocad where you can pan and zoom straight from the mouse wheel, you would understand how much faster you coulf fly through your work. It’s amazing!

    5. What is up with that default red stroke? change it!

    6. Crop tool like Lightroom.

    7. Ruler tool should not force you to drag a line for straightening. You should be able to click one point, click the second point, and BAM! there is your line for straightening.

    8. The Actions Pallete is particularly lousy. It needs an overhaul.

    9. Highlights and Shadows definitely needs to be an adjustment layer option.

    10. Make the next PS intelligent enough to pick the white point, black point, and middle gray point in many of the adjustments. At least make it get close, and the user can fine tune it after.

    11. A lot of nifty features only show up in PS Elements. This is inexcusable. If it’s in Elements, then it should automatically be in the full version of PS! :)

    12. Undo and Redo should be unlimited, like they are in MS office.

Thats all for now! Out of all of those, the Mouse wheel function would make the biggest difference to my daily life.

    Thanks Scott!

I would like the ability to link smart objects to layer masks. What good is it to make a layer mask for a smart object if I can’t move it in tandem with the layer mask.

I know that I can put it in a folder and make a layer mask for the entire folder, but that’s not a good solution…

This might require a bit of work with Microsoft and Apple and a couple of brain surgeons, but, how about a “mental imaging” system, which would capture how your mind “thinks” your picture should look, rather than how it really does look. It works all of the time when I take the photo, yet the “mental image” seems to fade by the time I look at it on the screen. This would work great for the wedding photographers who could “mentally” lose 20 pounds off the brides, etc. Or for Landscape photographers who could eliminate the garbage on the ground. Or product photographers who could make shoddy goods look great!
Still can’t vision it? Assuming you are a straight male (adjust scenario as necessary) picture that woman on the other side of the bar, now picture her after 4 or 5 beers. She now looks in her 20’s, smooth clear skin, nice figure etc. Reality is she is looks like your ex-mother-in-law. Yeah, that sort of image enchancement filter.
And while we are at it, how about an Ansel Adams action? or a Pete Turner, or other famous photographers actions? to convert any photo into a real peice of “art”. Of course there would be royalties to be paid.

Yes, shadow/highlight as an adjustment layer. Adjustments like vibrance would be nice too.

Perhaps we could trade in some of the filters like the cloud filter for whats behind door #2.

Wonder how long this list will be by the end of the day or in an hour.

I think it would be great to have all the adjustments be GPU dependent. More and more programs are moving this way.

I also want real painting effects like Corel Painter on textured surfaces. The paths palette in Photoshop sooo much better than the shapes/layers method interface in Corel Painter, when painting in a defined space. As an illustrator, it would make my life so much easier to do my paintings in Photoshop. I’d give up Painter forever if Photoshop could paint like Painter.

Two things I’d like to see in the next Photoshop:

Clone/Heal on a path: Instead of the source point moving in tandem with the brush stroke, one could assign the source to a path and the source point would move along that path relative to the movement of the brush.

Luminosity adjustment layer: Pretty self-explanatory. An adjustment layer available in CMYK or RGB that gives the same result as converting to Lab and displaying only the luminosity channel.

    I want for Photoshop:

A better noise plug-in - similar to Paint Shop Pro’s (which is superior in every way to CS3s

Built-in presets - I want a “super bright” curves preset built-in, or neat presets for Stamp, Sumi-E, and every single filter in PS. Make drop-down menus for all preset options.

Photo border detector for lasso tool - It’s minor, but not having to go back around for the 3-5 pixels the Magnetic Lasso tool misses would be great.

An absolute square brush with softness options.

Preset brushes that have >1% Step - It’s ridiculous what that presets have so much Step.

Buy Photomatix and incorporate it into CS3 and/or LR.

Viveza for LR - I know Aperture has it, but make sure we can make changes to the U-points at any time, not just the first.

Retainment of Layer Masks with Smart Objects, and multiple masks for individual filters - I want to get my layer mask back when I rasterize a Smart Object, and I want to have individual masks for each filter I apply to a Smart Object.

    Scott!
    Great idea!
Here are 8 feature requests from my ever growing list.

    1
Add + and - signs to Ranking numbers

Here’s as simple one. I’d it use everyday.
Adding + and - qualifiers to the 5 basic ranks essentially adds the ability to make/record a high (+), medium (no qualifier), and low (-) distinction within each rank.
Many times, there are images that don’t quite make the cut to the next higher number, but they’re better than the majority of the images in the lower ranks - i.e. It’s a strong 3. At other times, there are images that make the cut into the next tier but they’re weaker than others in the same tier.
Here’s an example of how you might use this. You’ve got a quota for a specific number of images; you take the 5s and only the best 4s … the 4+s.
Here’s another example. You want to sequence images from stronger to weaker. You quickly group +, no modifier, and - together. You compare images with +’s to those with no qualifier to see if you should downgrade some and upgrade others. This takes the - images out of the picture making it easier and faster.
Ranking is an essential function for sorting images (and separating the dross from gold). This is a simple way to make this essential function more powerful.

ps This would make the Ratings Filter field in Bridge longer. It’s worth it!

    2
In Select by Color Range activate the Fuzziness slider for the preset colors in the drop down menu - RGBCMY, Highlights, Midtones, Shadows. It’s a great tool for making quick selections. Typically the presets don’t allow you to customize the selection so you end up using the Sampled Color most of the time. This feature request involves no change to the interface, just activating an existing function in one area for the others. (If you want to go further add a new category - Neutrals. If you want to go even further - add categories for High Saturation, Medium Saturation, and Low Saturation. Making selections base solely on saturation is extremely difficult to. Targeting color adjustments based on saturation (instead of luminosity or hue) would be dramatic evolution in color adjustment - it’s ground breaking, if not history making. This would make every color adjustment tool in the PS that much more powerful.

Targeting color adjustments based on saturation (instead of luminosity or hue) would be dramatic evolution in color adjustment. It’s ground breaking, if not history making. This would make every color adjustment tool in the PS that much more powerful.

In Sampled Colors, it would also be useful to be able to specify which component(s) of color you want to select - all blues, or all midtones, or all high level saturated values, or all three. Three check boxes or three letters (HSL) that you could shift click.

Personally, I’d put the drop down menu items by the side of the mask preview (so people quickly see their options)(similar to HSL edits in ACR or the recent Black and White adjustment layer). I’d make them shift clickable to activate more than one field at a time - (select Reds and Magentas at the same time). I’d put activated colors in one color and modified colors in another (like colors for links in web browsers).

(Being able to activate multiple fields simultaneously is something I’d implement throughout all color adjustment interfaces. But that’s another feature request. Let’s stick to Select By Color Range here.)

    3
List a File’s Owner in the Title Bar as an Active Link
In a file’s title bar, add the owner’s name and make it an active link that will launch a web browser and take the viewer directly to a specified url (typically the creator’s website, perhaps even the webpage that details copyright terms and usage rights or licensing information). This could be extended from individual user to any agency that licenses the image - i.e. the owner name could be changed to getty.com. Creators and corporations alike will love you. For this last feature (changing the owner), you’ll need to be able to change the data in the field specifying this (file info or metadata?). And you’ll need to be able to lock this field, so that it can only be changed by an authorized person.

This is evolving ideas from past versions of PS - the Digimarc era. Right idea. Wrong implementation. Digimarc makes my images drive traffic to them (corporation not managing rights) instead of me (individual managing rights) or my agent (my authorized agent). They don’t communicate with customers well. If Adobe made this process easier for content creators, giving creators control, they’d garner enormous good will throughout the industry.

Optionally, add a spider service (preferably Adobe) to generate usage/web whereabout reports. This would be very useful and substantially change the culture of online image usage/commerce in a very positive way. (Is there a potential connection here with Photoshop Express?)

    4
    A Curve for Saturation
Create a Curve for Saturation so you can target relative saturation shifts into specific tonal ranges. Saturate the highlights more than the shadows, with a specific amount and a specific transition through the midtones.
Then create another Curve that allows you to target values with low saturation separately from values with high saturation. Saturate semi-neutrals more than highly saturated values - precisely.

    5
    Ring Around Palette
Make a palette that simulates a ring around (like the adjustment tool Variations). This could be just a preview not an adjustment tool. Have a compact mode that shows one variable of color (H,S or B) at a time and an expanded mode that shows all three simultaneously (H,S, and B).
It could also give a variety of iterations of a specific correction type. i.e. target an adjustment layer that makes a 10 point cyan shift and see 10 point shifts in RGBCMY and optionally in Lightness and Saturation. So target an adjustment layer and generate a ring around based on that adjustment. This would be huge for users who are new to color theory and very useful for the rest of us, enabling us to quickly make decisions on our images visually rather than theoretically or numerically.

    6
    Improve Softproofing
Enable simultaneous comparisons of before and after states, perhaps in a softproof palette.
Make it easy to surround both versions (unsoftproofed and softproofed) with dark gray or black to make the Paper White simulation more accurate. (It’s too aggressive right now.) Like sunglasses for everything in the interface but the two images - softproofed and unsoftproofed.
Make the Simulate Paper Color check box a slider that can be customized for a particular viewing situation, making the white of the preview lighter or darker for a specific viewing environment. (Optionally, add another slider that enables the viewer to customize white balance in the preview to simulate viewing lights other than 5000K.) At a minimum, adding a full screen mode for multiple open files (hiding the desktop) would help.

    7
    Improve Gamut Warning
It barely approximates SWOP and isn’t accurate for any other printing situation such as inkjet.
Identify changes due to gamut compression (out of gamut) and rendering intent (in gamut but changed) with different colors.

    8
    3D Color Graph Palette
Make a 2D color picker you can expand to 3D. Plot multiple points on it. Combine this with Kuler’s ability to extract, specify, and analyze color palettes. Add the ability to graph images and ICC profiles within them (like Colorsync, Chromix or Profilemaker). Preview adjustments made to a file, including softproofing rendering intent. Make the preview of the graph and an image simultaneous so that you can click on either the graph or the image and see the area targetted in the other graph. Make this a palette.

I’d like the ability to switch color spaces (both Assign Profile and Convert to Profile) as adjustment layers. Then I could do things like Scott’s 7-point system or Dan Margulis’s Picture Postcard Workflow non-destructively.

I’d like to be able to do feathered selections as intuitively as LightCraft’s LightZone program.

None of the above will happen, so here’s what I really want: copy the very nifty crop/straighten tool from Lightroom into Photoshop.

1.Complete filter support for all files, all of the time. I’m talking 16 bit, smart object, everything. Want to run plastic wrap on a 16 bit file? No problem! How about lens blur on a smart object? Can do! Does this drive anybody else crazy, or is it just me?

2.Customizing your own tool bar also sounds great.

    3. I don’t know if it’s possible but Scott’s idea for applying all edits at once sounds genius. Maybe it could be an option to work on a “proof” image, queue your edits or at least a certain number of edits, then hit a “render” button to apply those edits or just render when you save and close. You could go get some coffee or leave for the day instead of staring at the screen wishing liquify didn’t take so long.

    My desires for Photoshop:

    1. I want to be able to COPY+PASTE a value into any and all color dialogs [i’m looking at you save for web > matte]

    2. a crop setting for creating a ‘zoom to fill frame’ behavior for easy creation of square thumbnails from multiple aspect ration files

    3. an info palette with some additional info options in it — for example, why do i have to go to Image Mode to see this stuff?

    My Desires for Lightroom:

    1. opens as smart object [oh, wait, that’s covered! yay!]

    2. ability to edit date+time taken metadata [either edit core exif data or offer parallel fields] to help with cameras that might have had bad date settings, or when working with scans.

    3. metadata field for indexing information [again, for managing rolls of scanned slides or film - i feel wishy washy about how save user dragged order is

    4. some soft proofing mechanism

    5. an “Archive to Master Catalog…” notion. I keep older photos all in a catalog on my external hard drive and recent photos on my laptop drive. when recent becomes old its a multi step process to “Export as catalog…” “delete selected photos” “switch catalogs” “import from catalog” “delete temporary catalog” “switch back to current catalog”

    6. some way to track keyword changes [diffs, moves, additions] and apply them to another catalog [or otherwise sync keyword changes between these two catalogs i carry]. Because if I’ve done some editing of the keyword hierarchy in my local catalog when I push files back to my archive catalog I end up with a fracture of multiple keywords, etc.

    7. Some definitive freakin’ documentation of stuff like the XML or Lua based web templates

    1) Filter optimisation and standardisation. A lot of the filters are out of date and really need modernising. Due to this it makes filters harder to use and understand for new users with the various UI changing. Also some of the filters are dog slow to use even though they give better results (Surface blur is an example). Also make all filters work in 16bit (or higher) modes.

    2) Lightroom Develop module in RAW. Standardise the the RAW interface between the two applications and have history states.

    3) ‘Meta-Layers’ instead of a pixel by pixel copy of each layer have a description of a layer. Think of it as Smart Layers/Objects on steroids. This way would help stop file bloat especially with higher resolution digital cameras on the market. It would also hopefully reduce RAM overhead.

    4) Take advantage of GPU power in advance of AMD’s Fusion technology and leverage the power there. CS 3 seems to do some of this already.

    5) Noise plug in – Agreed.

    6) Dual state colour management: One who want to get the job done and one who understands the ins and outs of colour management.
    7) Improve the interaction between Bridge and Lightroom especially for meta-data.

    8) Overhaul of actions, make them able to determine LSE (Long Side Edge) for watermarking and give us more flexibility. I know a lot of this can be done with scripting but not everyone is a code guru.

    9) Open Source support (Linux). With the screw up of Vista and the high costs of Mac hardware people are moving towards Linux in corporate environments. Whilst there is issues of colour management on this platform it’s something Adobe could do to bring it up to standard. A lot of compositing and 3D work is done on Linux.

    10) Stack filters – Similar to what people have been mentioning. Open a filters dialogue and ‘layer’ the filters to achieve the effect then when you apply it optimises the rendering of the filters by doing it selectively to the parts that need it. Similar idea to 3D where they only render visible parts of the image.

At the risk of ruining all your fun, I’ve got this to say:

Adobe doesn’t make software for its users. It makes software for its shareholders. I’m not in charge of setting Adobe’s strategic direction, but if I was, I would run away from this idea as quickly as possible. Adobe may be a very customer focused company, but they are still out to make money. As a developer I know that if we (meaning my company) opened ourselves to delivering our customers top 10 demands carte blanche we would be bankrupt. It makes so much more sense to implement a feature on a cost vs market value basis. That is how priorities are set, because thats how stockholders want them set. It would be great if your idea was possible, but I just don’t ever see it happening.

And now back to dreaming about cool features:

    My list:

    1) My first one is very simple. Have Free Transform automatically default to constrain the proportions. Don’t make me press Shift. I think that’s generally what most people want by default. Elements has it like this and I’d love to see Photoshop follow.

    2) I vote for the improved HDR feature too. Like Noise Reduction, give us something that works.

    3) Better looking Web Galleries would be great.

    4) I’d love for there to be a keyboard or mouse shortcut that brings up a “Minority Report” like Layer interface over my canvas when I’m working. That way I can visually choose the layer I want instead of having to go over to the Layer’s palette and click on it there.

    5) You know the “Make Work Path from Selection” option in the Paths palette? I’d love it to actually work well.

    6) More “auto” thinking-like features like the Quick Selection Tool. Maybe make a dodge and burn tool that works better and automatically applies it’s effects in the similar areas that I’m painting on - instead of every place my cursor touches.

    Thanks!

I would like to see PS to work like LightRoom or at least like Camera Raw,
because some times you edit a photo on camera raw and went you open it on
PS don’t look right so then you have to close it, edit again or change it to
smart object to be able to edit it again, and if you need a filter you stuck because you changed the photo to smart object.

    * so I would like to see editable photos in camera raw with out change it to
smart object ones you open it on PS.

I’m not sure the top 10 consensus thing would be a good idea at all. If Adobe had followed this model from the start, photoshop would be nowhere near what it is now. The truly innovative features that seem to take photoshop to that next level are the ones you didn’t have pop into your head in an instant.

As for the feature I’d most like to see implemented - filter adjustment layers. Just a blank pass-through layer with mask (like other adjustment layers) that you can apply filter(s) to and have it affect every layer visible beneath it but leaving the layers on top of it alone.

    1) A way to open new catalogues without the program having to restart (can you believe they decided that this was ok?) AND a way to keep multiple catalogues open at the same time.

Instead of the default 3 sizes for the icons in the “Layers, Channels, and Paths” Palettes I want CUSTOM SIZES.

    2.
A better way to mask somebody off a white background than using the “TRAGIC WAND TOOL” or any of the simple selection tools. Or masking using Channels.

As a software developer, I can say this is just agile software development. When done properly, everyone can win. The hardest part is getting buy-in from management. The key is prioritizing the features with a cost/benefit analysis and then developing running-tested code. It can absolutely be done. I don’t know the bureaucracy of Adobe but it can be done there, too, no doubt.

    1) I would like the slideshow for bridge to be exportable, or make the slideshow for Lightroom similar in that you have “pan and zoom” and different transitions.

    2) I second what someone else said about putting Elements features in Photoshop or Lightroom, or what someone else said about making the web galleries better. They are great, but they could be better.

3.) I also agree with what everyone else said about Noise software integration and better filters.

    Hi Scott,

Many good suggestions thus far, should keep programmers challenged.

In a previous post you mentioned the importance of backing up your photos to multiple places, which I do, but not a regularly as I probably should. It is also important to archive important photos to media such as DVDs.

What I would like to see in Lightroom is the ability to archive to DVD or whatever media and to have Lr keep track of the specific disc or drive name that the archive data is on, while keeping a thumbnail catalog of the archived items.

I had previously used Extensis Portfolio and used this feature and I miss it in Lr. Maybe this feature already exist and I am just unaware ?

In the survey view of Lr, I would like to see the image metadata information (shortcut “I”) show camera data for each image on the screen (as it does for a single image). This way you would not have to click on each image and then look at meta panel to see the “as shot” reference data and look at images with panels compressed.

Kinda wish the integration between Lr and Ps was more transparent or maybe a Ps like module to run various PS type items could be added to Lr that would be so transparent that you actually think you are still in Lr, but you are actually running PS in the background. That would keep the accountants happy since you would need a copy of Ps to run the module.

Interesting idea, the 10 most popular requests. A minor problem perhaps is that Adobe comes up with some really good ideas on their own, and I don’t know how large the programmer resources are.

So maybe the top ten sent in form the odd numbered priorities from 1-20 (1,3,5…) and the top ten Adobe ideas form the even numbered priorities, 2,4, etc.

And then Adobe starts at “1″ and works down the list as far as practical—and we realize that some ideas may be simple and some very complex so that all 20 might not get done?

    Scott,

I love your ideas! I can’t wait to see the full list that will get voted on. I’ll also echo people’s ideas of:

    1. Better noise reduction
    2. Better HDR (it’s a complete joke right now)
    3. Compatibility for 14 bit images (across the board), and for smart objects.
    4. Better/new filters (and brushes)
    5. I would also love to see a longer product cycle, but definitely with free updates along the way. It seems like having a new release every 3 years or so would allow users to “master” the program before the next one is out.

Alright, there’s also been tons of great stuff about Lightroom. Could we do another one of these “Top 10’s” for Lightroom? Maybe next week?

    1. I’d like to be able to apply Develop Presets using keyboard shortcuts while working in the Library module.

    3. Better noise reduction would be a great idea for Lightroom as well.

4)node workflow, maybe just for aftereffects (or at least a option to-kind of like autodesk combustion)

5)a way in bridge to just have a list view, the only option now is “details” and it still caches everything….it makes things slow and it is prone to crashing.

6)many of the ideas mentioned above

I’d like to be able to add stops to the “Levels” command like adding a new color in a gradient. This would be equivalent to points on a curve. I find Levels more intuative, but it’s not as flexible or powerful because of only three stops.

What a great idea Scott, Her

    1. I want Adobe to buy or license a really good noise reduction plug-in from a third-party developer (like Noise Ninja, or Noiseware Professional, etc.) and replace the one in Photoshop with it. I use Noise Ninja and love

    2. Better HDR, I never seem to get good results using Photoshop.

    3. A new interface that looks more like Lightroom

    4. Instant feedback on what you are working on. Once the file is where you like it you could click a render button and Photoshop would apply all your edits

    5. How about working more like Nikon Capture NX, but still retain the ability to make intricate masks for certain projects.

    6. Better paint tools, much like Corel Painter or at least Painterly filter effects.

    Scott -

“Render effect -> Lighting” needs to have a larger preview screen. It’s a guess game with how small it is right now, but it is a very useful tool, and I’m certain could be used more frequently by users if preview screen wasn’t a joke.

    1. More than four sample points in Photoshop. We get ten in camera raw, why only four in photoshop? For users that are color blind or have a color deficiency, the readouts from sample points are essential tools.

    2. Add the option to have RGB 8 bit data instead of percentages for the color information in Lightroom. I understand where Adobe came from in making them percentages, but for practical purposes, just show me the raw RGB numbers so I can keep things straight in my head between Photoshop and Lightroom.

    3. Add save indicators in the history palette. Whenever you save a file, Photoshop could add a bold line between steps in the history palette. Sometimes you forget the last time you saved something, and considering that large files take a long time to save, a quick indicator of the last save would save a few minutes per file for me, eliminating unnecessarily frequent saves.

I would like to also see:

    1) Before/After of images like in lightroom
    2) Shadow/Highlight as an adjustment layer
    3) Crop Tool that integrates the rule of thirds and this should really default to “best for reduction”.
    4) Better default filters - clouds, artisitic

    Additionally:

    5) ***Patch Tool to work better around edges - **please
    6) Unsharp Mask to default to the right mode or channel for sharpening or give you a choice
    7) More Default Actions to include artisitic image effects and sharpening options for portraits, landscapes in low/med/strong like the seven steps.
    8) More versitle printing layouts like lightroom, easier to include multiple photos in printing.
    9) Performance warning - when memory is getting low, so as not to receive the infamous windows message - “Not Responding”
    10) Color Picker default color(s) for sky/clouds

    Thanks for this Scott..

I agree with the many comments requesting a more PhotoMatix-like HDR mode conversion. Then there are two others:

    1. Make the application 64 bit so it can use more than 2G of memory. It would really help with HDR and panos of high res images.
    2. Multi-thread the “algorithms” (not just the overall application) that take longer than a second on a newer machine. Things like HDR merge, pano-stitching, noise reduction, etc.

    Thanks for asking,

    1. Have something like Vervesa that can quickly edit a color in the desired part of the photo.

    2. Better HDR tool. Like Photomatix.

    3. Painting tools like Corel Painter X

    Thanks!!

Wow, lots of comments, teach me to read so late in the day :)

Really I think most of us use Lightroom and only go into Photoshop for fixing items like cloning out that annoying item or masking.

So add layers/layer masks/cloning tool to Lightroom.

Noise Ninja would be good as well.

For PS, allow me to define menus as I want them. Make it easy for me to define these menus into multiple workspaces.

    1) Minimum version: synchronize the features in Camera Raw and Photoshop - make all the extra ACR features (clarity, vibrance, superior sharpening controls incl. masking, the better ways to work the histogram in the ‘Basic’ panel, etc.) also available in Photoshop itself, where possible as adjustment layers. Given that Adobe ‘has’ them already, this should be relatively easy and cheap.

    2) Selections and localized editing in Camera Raw (in line with or going beyond what’s coming in Lightroom 2.0): much easier, more powerful, and intuitive than double-processing with repeated returns to ACR (as you never see the whole double-processed picture when you edit one of its layers in ACR).

    3) Maximum version: re-integrate Camera Raw into Photoshop. The current workflow for raw files requires changing programs as a matter of routine and is a little bit as if Microsoft asked us to use one program and interface for entering text and another for formatting it instead of simply giving us MS-Word. Integrate all ACR features into Photoshop; then be able to open RAW files in Photoshop itself with all those features available (again: preferably as adjustment layers) and the rest grayed out, while trying to make as many additional Photoshop features as possible available for working in raw - with the rest eventually becoming available after conversion to PSD (or to a smart object in PSD). If that required mandatory conversion to DNG, I’d be willing to pay that price. I would like one program for one post-processing workflow.

    Great idea Scott!

    My list is simple…maybe;

    1. Better brushes - more realistic.
    2. Better integration with Dreamweaver (like the way GoLive 8 and PSCS2 were) DW 9 & PSCS3 is an improvement over DW 8 and PSCS2 but not as good.
    3. Offer Lightroom with PS as part of the package. Something like Photoshop Extended “Plus” - and make it part of an upgrade when one wants to upgrade from CS3 Design Premium. Keep the price less than the purchase of Lightroom as it stands today.
    4. YES - make the menus like InDesign - I would like the tools to be removable as well (good idea Scott)
    5. Updated canned actions - useful actions to be blunt.
    6. Faster start-up

Break the print feature in Lightroom out as a sigluar module like Camera Raw is to Lightroom’s Develop feature then give the user the ability to use this print module directly from Photoshop.

    Photoshop:
Make all filters etc, usable in 16 bit mode.
Make the Precision cursors & all cursors so that their color can be
    changed.
Clouds filter like real clouds as well as the glass filter that looks like
    glass.

    Lightroom:
Have the ability to save your identity plate setup and panel end marks
so that it will always show up even when you start new catalogs so you
do not have to re-load the setup every time.

I agree with most. Reading the last one with the startup screen, Photoshop could use something more informational when starting and then a welcome screen like the other applications. I find it pretty useful actually.

Perhaps the loading screen could present you with something useful like a tip or something choose-able by the user (a few different options) to get it the way it wants.

    - Actions to record brush strokes!! Please! I beg you!

    - The ability to specify guideline positions when moving them, not just when they are created

    - Angled guidelines where I can specify the angle.

    - Filters should not have a directional constraint. I want wind at 45 degrees or fibers at something other than vertical. I’m constantly rotating my canvas/layer because of a filter constraint

    - Cloud filter to have some settings to play with other than just holding down the alt key.

    - Fractal generators

    - A “Curved Line” tool. I end up using the Pen, then Stroke Path. But then I have to delete the layer and re-Stroke every time I change the curve.

    - The ability to define custom brushes in color, not just greyscale.

    - the ability to use a set of images for a custom brush instead of just one, so I can paint a forest using 5 various tree images, not just 1. Or grass brushes can have several blade shapes not just 1.

    - Even more robust dynamic brush engine. Why can’t we control the placement, rotation, and color of that Dual Brush tip?

    - No more “hidden” functions that can’t be found in the menus. like Ctrl+Alt+~ selects Luminosity, but I can’t find that in the menu and I’m constantly forgetting the shortcut.

    - a “snap to” alignment function where you can select many objects and then select an object to snap those items to horizontally or vertically.

    - a “center on canvas” alignment function either horizonatlly or vertically or both without having to do the ‘Select All’ trick.

Ummm, I guess I listed more than 10. But if any of these made the cut, I’d be thrilled!

1.Tone mapping and better HDR stuff
    2. Seam Carving. More realistic paint
    3. More noise reduction dust and scratches
    4. Have photoshop work more like lightoom and CR with no progress bars
    5. The ability to mask EACH smart filter
    6. More non-destructiveness in any way
    7. the ability to us ALL retouch tools on a new blank layer(I’m looking at you Mr. patch tool!)

Also I really want more start from scratch filters like the ones found in After Effects, there are bunch of really awesome filters like fractal noise etc. that would be really easy to put in photoshop because they have already made them for AE!!!!!!
please use the already developed features you have at your finger tips Adobe.

The biggest thing stopping me from wanting to use Lightroom is it’s performance. It’s just so slow even on my pretty beefy computer (WD 10K Raptor 74GB HD, 2GB RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo). Now, I would imagine processing RAW files is pretty CPU & memory bandwidth intensive, but operations such as searching could be much faster. I imported my entire photo library (minus RAWs) into Google’s Picasa, and searching on tags is pretty much as fast as I can type (with live updates per keystroke!) -a joy to use. I tried importing a few thousand pics into Lightroom and it croaked and slowed my machine to a crawl. If performance could be overhauled, I wouldn’t find myself dreading to use Lightroom so much. I use because there’s nothing else on the PC that gives me that kind of workflow.

Also, a better management system for keywording in LR would be very welcome. I do keywording exclusively in Bridge. And even that could be improved upon. Typing the keyword with auto-complete (based on current keywords) would be much faster than clicking check boxes.

For photoshop, I hate the idea of the “Work Path” “layer” in the Paths palette. Many times I would create a vector path, deselect it, do something else, create another vector path only to find out later that it inadvertently deleted my previous path because the Work Path is only temporary and I forgot to create a new layer first. I think it would make more sense to always create a new path layer if a path isn’t selected instead of using a single temporary work space.

The ability to create multiple layer masks on a single layer would also be nice. I know at first it might seem silly, but it’s actually very handy. Consider the following scenario. You create an intricate mask on a person’s face (hair and all). Then for whatever reason, you decide you need to mask out part of the head. Later on, you realize that the secondary mask was a bit too crude and you masked out too much. There’s no easy way to unmask it because you’d have to reconstruct the intricate mask you had prior. There are
