How To Get Exactly What We Want In the Next Versions of Photoshop, and Lightroom

Every time a new version of Photoshop or Lightroom comes out, we (the community of users) get a number of features that make our lives more fun, or make us more productive, or sometimes both.
But, of course, every time a new version of either one comes out, there are always those cries of “Why didn’t Adobe add [fill in the blank]” or, “I can’t believe we still don’t have [fill in the blank].” Unfortunately (for me anyway), I’m usually one of the ones whining the loudest about a feature that didn’t make it, or a feature that was changed (which is why Adobe often cringes when I call).
But my buddy Terry White and I were talking recently, and Terry floated an idea that I honestly believe would change all this, and finally give us exactly what we want in the next versions of Photoshop and Lightroom, and InDesign, and so on.
There’s only one major hurdle; Adobe would have to agree to it.
The only reason I’m even posting this idea, is because if there’s a company out there today that might consider it; it would be today’s Adobe, (which is a very different company than it was just a few years ago).
This is such a major departure from how things have always been done, that it has the power to change the way software is developed from this point on, and if Adobe pulled it off, the rewards for Adobe (and their stockholders) would be off the charts. Everybody would always upgrade to the new version because we’d all finally be get exactly what we want.
Here’s the plan:
Adobe sends an email to their registered user base asking them to tell Adobe exactly what features they want to see in the next version of Photoshop (or Lightroom, etc.), and then:
Adobe’s engineers have to agree to include ALL of the Top 10 most popular features in the next release. Period.
Only after they’ve added the top 10 most-requested features, can they then look at adding any of the 11 through 20 most popular features, or any pet projects (new ideas, new concepts, etc.) that they’ve been brewing up on their own.
Now, you might be thinking, “That’s impossible,” or “It can’t be done” but everybody was saying stuff like that before Thomas Knoll wrote the first version of Photoshop (he wrote it in one weekend, by the way). It’s only impossible until somebody does it.
Now, these Top 10 Features have to be somewhat reasonable; in other words, a feature couldn’t be, “Lower the price to $49,” or “Make it only use 20 MB of drive space” but it could be something like “Make it load 25% faster.” If that wound up being the #1 thing on the list, then Adobe would have to throw enough engineering muscle behind it so it did just that, because after all, “That’s the #1 thing our customers told us they want!”
How could they go wrong? How could they not sell a record-breaking number of upgrades, because the top 10 features would ALL be included in the next version.
Also, it’s entirely possible that the #1 thing Photoshop users want is something that would incredibly simple to add. But if you don’t ask—you’ll never know.
Now, just for fun, I’m going to do my own totally un-scientific “Photoshop Feature Wishlist Survey” and I need your input. Go ahead and post the features you’d like to see in the next Photoshop, and I’ll compile them into an online survey that we’ll post here next week. Then, you can come back by, click on the feature from the list you want the most, and we’ll see what “We” wind up choosing as our Top 10 Most-Wanted features.
I’ll make sure Adobe sees it (and will take the accompanying heat that opening up a can of worms like this usually causes me), and although this is totally just for fun, at least Adobe will get an idea of what at least some of us really want. If the #1 thing isn’t on their list, maybe now it will be.
The Power of 10
I’ll get the ball rolling with a few things I’d love to see in the next Photoshop:
- I want to see all filters get a User Interface makeover, so they’re more like the Smart Sharpen filter, with a very large preview, the ability to save your favorite settings to a pop-up menu, and basic and advanced modes to hide features most folks won’t ever use.
- I want a “Do the last step again” keyboard shortcut, that will do whatever I just did again. If I add the Shift key, I want it to do my two last steps again. If I add the Option (Alt) key, it does my last three steps again. It’s like an instant, temporary action, built on the fly as I work.
- I want a better color picker; one where I can click on it, and a list pops down of my favorite colors and I can choose a new color with just one click and hold; and not have to bring up a separate dialog, or keep a palette open.
- I want to be able to build my own toolbar, with only the tools I want visible, and I want to configure the size and shape the way I want it.
- I want a set of real painting tools like those found in Corel Painter.
- I want some of the best “Kai’s PowerTools” filters updated and integrated into Photoshop using Photoshop’s user interface (rather than Kai’s).
- I want the Info palette readout built right into both Curve and Levels, so I don’t have to have two palettes open to do one job.
- I want InDesign CS2’s pop-out panel design for managing my palettes.
- I want Before/After’s like Lightroom built into Photoshop
- I want Adobe to buy or license a really good noise reduction plug-in from a third-party developer (like Noise Ninja, or Noiseware Professional, etc.) and replace the one in Photoshop with it.
- I want Adobe to hire an absolute kick-butt high-end designer to go and replace every default Layer Style Preset, every default Action, every default shape, and every default brush with brand new, kick-butt, really usable ones.
- I want Adobe to make ALL of Photoshop work like Camera Raw and Lightroom, where you never have to wait for a progress bar, and all your edits are applied at one time; when you’re done with all your edits, so you work at full speed all the time.
- I want the last setting you used in Layer Styles to still be in place when you go back (in other words; I want them to be “Sticky.”)
- I want better filters. I want a Clouds filter that actually looks like clouds. I want a Glass filter that makes things really look like glass. I want a Dust & Scratches filter that really removes Dust & Scratches, and I want a Fibers filter that looks like real Fibers.
- I want a better looking startup splash screen. I know that sounds silly, but I do.
I could go on and on, but know that I would gladly and wholeheartedly give up getting any or all of these, if it’s not what the Photoshop community chose as their “Top 10 Most-Wanted” features.
So, that’s the plan: post your own ideas here; I’ll add the most popular ones to an online survey to go live next week, and then you can vote on your favorite ones, and if nothing else, at least we’ll see what we here all want. So let’s get to it!

I want metadata to work consistently across all Adobe products eg author is the same field in Lightroom as Photoshop etc. and that xmp files containing this metadata get automatically written into the same folder as the parent image without exception, on every update.
You’re not going to get a Linux version of PS, if people won’t pay for the OS, they’re not going to drop the money for PS.
Get a Mac, you know it’s Unix underneath.
Scott, this is a fascinating idea, and I honestly wish it could work, but to be pragmatic, it simply cannot. I work for a fairly large software company and although I am not a developer, I have some idea of what it would take to do what you have proposed. The fact is, you probably wouldn’t like the outcome.
Documenting the top 10 requests from users is probably fairly simple in the age of instant feedback via the Internet. The problems begin when Adobe needs to try and implement those requests into their product.
If you look at some of the requests people have posted, you will see right away that a few of those requests are in opposition to others. In a nutshell, what people are asking for is “more functionality, more stability, and faster execution”. In the software world, these are often mutually exclusive unless your development funding is endless, but we know in the real world, this would raise the cost of the product to astronomical levels.
In the real world, developers need to choose whether they will build more functionality, more stability, or more speed into their product. Particularly effective developers might be able to pull off two of the three. But keep in mind there are also time constraints; you would not be happy to wait 3-5 years for a new release either!
A customer focused company will do a better job at identifying what will make their customers most happy, but that doesn’t guarantee they will be able to implement everything their customers want. It all boils down to time and resources.
Smaller companies might have the ability to be more agile, but they ultimately will be under the same constraints as the larger ones: how to apply a finite pool of development resources in a finite time period to the area that will make the customer most happy.
It’s great to dream, and nobody is saying that Adobe can’t get better at being customer focused (although I think they do a pretty good job considering their company and portfolio size). I just don’t think you can boil down the solution to something quite that simple!
What a party pooper!
LR: Archive
The biggest thing for me is make it cross platform installable. Be able to load it on a mac or pc without buy two versions.
Hey Scott,
Thought I would add one more comment -
I was watching Corey and RC on Layers TV. While Corey was demonstrating the use of Vanishing Point, I thought about your list and comment -
“I want to see all filters get a User Interface makeover, so they’re more like the Smart Sharpen filter, with a very large preview, the ability to save your favorite settings to a pop-up menu, and basic and advanced modes to hide features most folks won’t ever use.”
I was wondering if Adobe ever considered not opening a new window for the filters, but to provide a adjustments panel much like a Lr panel and then render a “live” image update with the image that is already on the screen again much like Lr ?????
I’m wondering if the opening of new windows for filters, etc is just a carry over from older code ??? Or is there a reason such as speed of rendering that prevents a more Lr type interface within Ps.
Scott,
For Photoshop CS4 my wish list is:
-The crop tool should include a rule of thirds grid like in Photoshop Express.
-The Glyph panel like Illustrator and Indesign to make better use of OpenType fonts.
- Better color picker and color harmonies like the ones in Illustrator CS3 Color Live.
- More artistic brushes like in Corel Painter.
- Better support for vector graphics.
Thanks,
Javier
Scott,
I would like to see one version of Photoshop, merge standard and extended together, and provide one reasonably priced product. That way everyone that watches the tutorials or reads the PhotoshopUser magazine, can follow all the steps.
Thanks, David
I agree with some others that have said Photoshop would not be what it is if it weren’t for NEW and INNOVATIVE ideas, not simply improvements. However, these are important too.
I would like to see an intelligent cropping tool that determines where best to crop based on rule of thirds or a centered subject or golden section.
I would also like to see Photoshop take into account what monitor and printer is being used; so what you see on the screen is what will print, no surprises.
I’d add that I’d like a Selection Brush, like Corel Photopaint 6 and up had. I want to be able to feather my selection inside, outside or in the middle, like Photopaint also had.
Not sure if you are going to do another seperate one of these for Lightroom, so I thought I’d add my thoughts in just in case.
I love what they’re doing with Beta 2.
I’d love to see levels and curves added (borrowed from Photoshop)
Dodge and burn. Make them in the retouch (just like clone and heal) I know you can do it with the brightness and exposure localized adjustments, but something even simplier seems good.
Always want better sharpening
I want more control over “auto” adjustments (especially when used with presets). I want option to pick and choose what will be auto (auto exposure, but not auto brightness).
Also want to define limits in an auto setting (have auto blacks on, but define it as >2 and
Lightroom and Photoshop both NEED accurate lens distortion correction tools. It should be able to cope with not just barrel or pincushion distortion, but complex distortion. Not just a simple lens warp, but accurate processing based on lens grid based data, exact lens model, aperture, focus distance, etc. This should be a fully updateable database system that can added too over time. Please look at DXO and how it copes with distortion. At present nothing beats it.
Hi..
1-i made a backup of all my photos on an external H.D, and want the light room to make a real back up of all the changes i made of my photos catalogue like: deleting, copying making new folders, not like the way it does it now only the changes on the photos, because i make a backup of all my photos by a third party program and that make a lot of confusing for me.
2- I like to have an actoual photo with all the changes i mead on it on my hard disk on the spot, not like the way it now only a virtual copy and then exporting it and reimporting it the folder.
Thanks
I want a price reduction! Enough with the Mega-suites! With everything else going up, it would be nice for Adobe to reward its loyal user base with a reasonable upgrade price. $499 for a suite upgrade is NOT reasonable, especially if it is a mediocre upgrade.
Scott:
Only one wish:
Let me be able to zoom in beyond the edges and corners like you can with Corel Painter. It’s so frustrating to be working on some tiny details and not being able to get BEYOND the corners or edges
Thanks for the opportunity
Would like a full featured data merge built int0 photoshop. I ,currently, must import graphics into word processing programs and then supplement the graphic with variable test. The obvious drawback is that I can’t enhance the variable text. InDesign has a data merge utility but it is not enough, Check out WordPerfect for example.
I want a stand-alone print module so that I can print on a separate computer and not tie up one of my licenses.
I’d very much like to have some sort of straight line eraser for use when removing backgrounds from objects that aren’t perfectly horizontally or vertically placed.
I want a better, more consistent human interface. Now Adobe is very feature rich, but it has a crimes-against-humanity interface. For example, there is no consistent Undo system across the different features and styles. This is not so much of a problem for those of us with a bit of proficiency in PS, but for beginners it is a needless complication. Similarly, all the different manipulations should have a simple and consistent before/after view, and where possible a fade-intensify slider. Having several Menu presets would also be helpful, one for beginners that emphasizes the most used function and others for more sophisticated users. Just improving the human interface would do wonders for bringing new users on board. Make that interface consistent across LR and PS.
Just fix the darn print mode so every time you change an image you don’t have to reset all your paper and profile options. This is a major pain in the —. CS2 worked fine with Print With Preview but now the improved CS3 forces you to re-enter all your settings for each image. When you’re printing multiple images this is very inefficient so I’m having to keep CS2 to handle my printing. Thanks
I would like to see the distort and or perspective transform apply to smart objects.
Be able to make set a diagonal datum line to set the edges the transform box, so that you can say skew right on the diagonal line.
To be able to set a freeze point on warp to keep an area from shifting during further warping.
The vanishing point tool be able to use transparency and to be to be used in LAB color. Also different selection tools in vanishing point.
More of the blend modes work in LAB color like lighten & darken.
Global layer style so that if you need to change several layers with the same style after you don’t have to go though and reapply the filter to each layer. a layer mask just for layer style so that you don’t have to dupe a layer and set the fill to 0 then add a layer mask to hide some of the styling.
I was really excited about a feature you showed on the beta version of PS3 at PSW-Miami and was disappointed that it was not included in the release version. It was a filter that showed areas that PS detected to have been retouched.
I would also like a feature that would restore photos back to their original state. I am a photo editor and some of the things photographers do to the photos they submit is really bad. I’d like to be able to start fresh. With no jpeg artifacts, no over sharpening, no weird colors from working on uncalibrated monitors… Most times what comes out of the camera is far better than the “tweaked” version that is submitted. That would be really sweet.
I want an easier Step backward than Alt-Ctrl-Z. Just make it so that Ctrl-Z a SECOND TIME steps backward, instead of redoing what I just undid.
I want a smarter color picker. One that will instantly show me compliments or triads (as in Color Schemer Studio). The one in Corel Painter is even better than Photoshop.
I want better explanations of all the Color Settings, so I can pick the best for my needs.
I would love to be able to do spot color (2 Pantones) easily. As it stands right now it is a little clunky.
Shadows and Highlights as an adjustment layer
Really big preview for Lighting Effects.
Hi Scott. Thanks for encouraging us to dream of what could be, rather than the reasons it cannot.
All of the ideas above are wonderful. My top ones would be customizable dock-where-you-want tool bars, font glyphs like illustrator, a better colour picker, and a tabbed bar along the top to access multiple open PS docs.
Thanks for listening!
I would like to see a much better “Extract” feature built into Photoshop. Like Scott said elsewhere, even if Adobe has to buy an existing product an incorporate it. The current extract tool takes way too much time. It’s OK on photos with uniform background, but trying to extract an image from a real world environment is tedious. There’s got to be a better way.
I guess we can all dream….
1. Brushes: Better, more realistic ones. Better controls. A brush previewer with folders for sorting. A way to save individual brushes, or sets to share with others without having to delete tons of brushes then reload them. The ability to use any Preset brush with any brush tool instead of having to save a version of a brush for use with the art history tool and another for use with the pattern stamp tool. Realistic brush stroke options (camel, bristle, chalk etc)
2. A way to set up for bleeds when creating a new document (a-la InDesign) with the option to view/print or not.
3. Smart filters everywhere and more realistic artistic filters.
4. Option to save and load History States with a file.
5. A better find edges filter with anisotropic control of smoothness.
6. The whole render lighting effect process is cumbersome and inaccurate. A better and larger preview of the actual image would be a good start.
7. A way of selecting a range of luminance (like the card game “Fish”… give me all pixels with a range of 240-255). Would really help in cleaning up masks!
I agree with control point technology!
I want a filter that works exactly like a true Polarizer filter that you should have put on your camera but didn’t, then regreted it later but now its too late.
I want a way to save history so that when I return to a file I can pick up where I left off.
I want an easy way to transfer 3rd party plug-ins to the new Photoshop.
I would love to see Adobe license Ananya Curves as a makeover for the Pen Tool, or at least shamelessly copy the wonderful userfriendliness of Ananya Curves.
Although I’ve learned the Pen Tool through hours of teeth-gritting and trial and error (mostly error), I purchased Ananya Curves as a Photoshop plug-in at last fall’s PhotoshopWorld, and haven’t looked back. This excellent replacement for the Pen Tool is what should be in Photoshop, natively.
See: http://www.ananya.com/
Photoshop was built for using two hands…. But that’s quite difficult for people like myself trying to learn it who have predominantly been using other photo/graphics applications in the Windows world. I’d like to see a menu system or a command system (with the ability to turn it on or off, of course) that can be utilized by using just a mouse instead of having to use both hands to accomplish everything, like most other programs that run Windows. Thanks.
One really helpful thing would be for the Bridge to follow your system preferences to place scroll arrows together. I have a giant screen and to have the up button at the top of the window and the down button at the bottom slows me down. All my other programs are smart enough to follow that preference
I also vote for a great 3rd party noise reduction plug-in.
Thanks for the chance to vote
I want to be able to save and reload settings in while making Contact Sheets. I hate trying to remember what size photos and how many rows and columns I used for “X” Client on “Y” Job. Customizable presets there would be great.
I also would like to be able to choose the color of the background and the text before the contact sheets are rendered.
When I start Photoshop and/or Bridge, I want it to snap open in
When I start Photoshop and/or Bridge, I want it to snap open in
I want to be able to permantly store my copyright info in the file – file info section and then have it apply that information to all the images in an entire folder without having to open any images in the folder.
The ability to set color brushes!!! You can do color patterns, you can do custom brushes in black and white/shades of grey, but you can’t do brushes in color… why not? It would be amazing to be able to set a brush to a custom image or shape in full color. Particularly useful when painting & coloring with a predefined shape. It’s a pain to duplicate layers and move around (alt, click drag is your friend)… particularly when the file size gets large. Coloring any kind of architectural image would be tremendously easier with this functionality.
I would like to be able to print out metadata for individula photos and entire groups of photos. For example: I would like to print a contact sheet that in addition to a photo file would have the metadata for each of the images. This would eliminate the need to go back to the bridge to obtain the photo information. Also, it would easily facilitate being able to compare bracketed photos and see what the camera setting differences were.
Thanks;
Bob
I would like the brush size to be a scrubby slider like the other options in the toolbar.
Also and better way of organizing brushes.
Most importantly, I would like to be able to use my CS3 on my home desktop, my work desktop, and my laptop, without having to buy a whole new program. I wouldn’t mind paying a small fee to add photoshop to my laptop, but another $650 is ridiculous.
What I miss the most in Photoshop is a color group tool that works somewhat like this: We all know what the clone and color picker tools can do, but for me that isn’t enough. Too many steps and way too complicated and time consuming. What I would really want is a simple option where I use the Marque tool or a simple command directly in brushes to select an area of blue sky, or a colored wall, green foliage and so on, and when I let go of the command key the brush tool not only allows me to paint out an entire new blue sky or whatever using the tones from the selected group, and on top of that mix those tones randomly on the fly to produce really believable end results instead of repeating the same pattern over an over.
That’s it.
Bjørn.
What I would like is the following (including everything scott said):
1. Fix the mac spaces, photoshop issue (okay, not truely photoshop).
2. Inbuilt colour scheme picker like Kuler.
3. Fix the hue saturation adjustment so it works better. Saturation needs to be increased in a different way so it doesn’t destroy the pixels. Perhaps adjust the chroma value like the way Joseph holmes does with his colour profiles.
4. Bigger filter preview on the lighting effects. I can’t see it, its too small.
5. Something like vibrance in lightroom.
6. Atmospheric filters – realistic mist, clouds, etc.
Thanks again for the opportunity to comment scott.
Mainly I second other ideas.
I have a PC and a Mac. I’d like to use things on both (for different reasons) without needing to purchase a second license or run CS3 in VMWare, which is INCREDIBLY slow. I don’t have Linux, but that would also be a good idea.
Undoing with multiple command-z instead of only one back.
I would like to be able to inspect a file in Bridge at 100% magnification just like you can see in LR instantly rather than wait for several seconds as it does now.
I would love to see two Photoshops strictly based on price with a more expensive version which includes filters/plug ins, with the purchaser given a choice of say 10 plug ins from a list. The difference in the two PS prices being the price of the plug ins. This would help me and I would imagine alot of people to update their plug ins as its alot of work as well as compatibility issues. It would give more meaning to people to update to the newest Photoshop version. It would also be cheaper for the plug ins as PS users are a big group. Save money on plug ins by upgrading to the newest version of plugins.
I also agree on more time between program updates as I don’t have enough time to get accustomed to one version.
Thank you Scott for this wonderful opportunity to hopefully make Photoshop the best it can be.
I would like to have an easy way of removing unwanted objects from photos.
a unidirectional motion blur filter – to give a simple front-curtain or rear-curtain effect.
