Thursday News Update

Here’s a coupla news quickies:
- Nikon just announced a major update to Capture NX (called Capture NX2), and there’s already a lot of buzz about this new version all over the Web. Nikon photographer (and Guest Blogger extraordinaire) Vincent Versace has this to say about the new version, “Capture NX2 unlocks my creativity in ways I never imagined. Using this software, the impossible becomes just an opinion. Capture NX2 is a RAW processor that allows you to be in the 21st century.” Vincent is regarded as the leading authority on NX, and he’s just released a Capture NX2 training DVD called “Unleashing the RAW Power of Capture NX2″ (he’s offering a $15 off discount if you pre-order the DVD before NX2 actually ships). Here’s the link with all the details on Vincent’s DVD.
- There’s a free Photo Walk coming up this Saturday, June 7th, 2008 in downtown Chicago that kicks off at 7:00 am from Bicentennial Plaza, (337 E. Randolph). Dan Ablan has all the details on his blog. Sounds like fun! (ya know, except for the whole 7:00 am thing).
- One of my readers, Baptiste Firroloni, brought this video clip to my attention, that is just hilarious. It’s a Washington DC Fox 5 news report, and they were doing a piece called “Photo Flap” about how photographers are getting hassled about taking photos in DC’s Union Station. So, Fox 5 did a live interview at Union Station with Amtrak’s Chief Spokesman who is talking about how it’s not necessary to have a permit to shoot in Union Station, and while they’re talking, a security guard comes up and makes them stop taping, and says “No photographs!” Priceless! You gotta see it: Here’s the link.
- Stephen Frishling, over at the FlyingwithFish.com blog (which focuses on tips for traveling with your photo gear), has a really great contest going on. Stephen says, “To kick off the 2nd half of the year, I’ve decided to help someone pick up their camera, spread their wings and go explore America by giving away a $100 Southwest Airlines gift card. No strings attached, I’m just looking for someone who can really tell me where they want to go, why they want to go and what they want to see!” The details for the contest are over at his site (here’s the link).
- One more thing: just a quick thanks to all of you who help out answering some of the questions posted by other readers here on the blog. Earlier this week, when I did the post about the Korg recording studio shoot, there were a number of follow-up questions, and I was home writing that day so I fielded a few of the questions myself, but I wasn’t able to answer all the them. Luckily, other readers here, like Kurt Shoens and Scott Wiggins, stepped in and provided some really good, helpful information, and I just wanted to say thanks, and let you know how wonderful it is to see readers helping each other, and not slamming or berating people when they have questions (which happens all too often in online forums). Hey, we’re all in this together, and it’s this kind of stuff that makes it all work, so thanks.
Hope you all have a fantastic Thursday, and we’ll see you back here tomorrow for a weekend wrap-up.

Scott, thanks for keeping us in the know.
Scott, this is kinda off topic…
With the 4th of July about a month away I was wondering if you had any advice, books or websites that I could read about taking photographs of fireworks.
Night time and moving lights kinda scare me, but I’m wanting to learn how.
RE NX2 and Viveza; If “CS4″ does not have control points implemented in some way, that will be a mistake.
Oh great, I just got CaptureNX 1.2 from B&H last week, Now you tell us there is a new version (NX2) ready to come out? I guess I just wasted $129.00. And I just ordered vincent’s 3 dvd set, Unleashing the RAW Power of Capture NX from amazon last night..
Scott, How do you balance/decide where to limit the amount of programs you select for your bag of tricks? I have CaptureNX but have shifted to the Lightroom/Photoshop combo to do 99% of what I do with all my photos. Sometimes I still use Capture for the incredible UPoint options but I am feeling I may spread myself thin and slowdown my established workflow if I consider making it apart of my workflow. Any suggestions/example of how you deal with these types of issues?
BTW…got a Drobo….very sweet and never worry about my backup now (Schedule to Drobo using MS Sync Toy 2) and the 2 times I have worn my “tripods” tee shirts people come up to me and ask me if I read your Blog…way cool!
Nice fin on that Video. Pretty crazy stuff. We’ve been doing a poll over at Pro Photo Show about how photographers feel about their rights. Seems to be a split.
I’ve noticed that too, there are lots of helpful readers here – who chime in with good info/answers for our questions. It is a very friendly community.
Do I really need NX2? I’m sooooooooo confused !!! I have Lightroom and CS3 and shoot with a Nikon D300, Am I missing something by not having NX2? I can’t hardly keep up !!
I followed the link to Vincent Versace’s website and ran into a problem with PayPal. I sent an email to Vincent and he responded within minutes. We ultimately could not solve the PayPal issue, but I was very impressed with his personal attention, and the answers he provided to some ancilary questions. It is always nice to be on the receiving end of good service.
There is a web page titled: “Downloadable Flyer Explaining Your Rights When Stopped or Confronted for Photography”. It is written by an attorney (Bert Krages) and covers US based rights to photograph in public places. He encourages you to download and distribute the PDF and to have it handy to know what you can and cannot do. The link is at his personal web site (based on his last name, in case it doesn’t come through here).
I’m with Frank and Barbara on this. The amount of software available out there is overwhelming. First, it’s Photoshop CS3, you gotta have it, Smart Filters, Smart Filters, they’re non-destructive, you gotta get it. OK. Then, of course, the Camera Raw on Bridge is no good, not as good as Lightroom’s Development module. OK, I gotta get Lightroom, as well. Now, it’s NX2.
I was fortunate enough to get NX for free when I purchased my D300 and it’s pretty bad ass, I have to admit, but can I justify getting an NX update when the new Lightroom is coming out soon and there’s even rumors of a new creative suite out there.
AHHHHH! It’s too much!
Ted. Get Scott’s book, “The Digital Photography Book (#1)”. What you are looking for is on page 175.
Hey scott!
Hey everybody!
Just thought I’d post here that as of last night I’m now Engaged!
The plan was for it to be wednesday… June 4th.. (64)… which is… a song I’ve been singing to Amanda for the past few days. (clue) It’s one of her favorite Beatles songs. The willow tree is strong with us as one of our first kisses was under one and Photography just had to be involved.
So, I took her to one of our parks here and I did a photoshoot with her. She thought we were just going to take random pictures in the park (good way to get her all dressed up for the occasion) I took some great shots of her dancing and some close up shots of her eyes and then she thought we should get some pictures of us under the willow tree. (my plan the whole time, but acted like it was her idea.) Anyway, so after I set up the shot the way I wanted it, I put the focus dot right on her and set it to 10 seconds.
Self timer… 10 seconds… had to run fast and strike a pose! note: I had a good 3 seconds left to actually ask her before the camera went.
So, my challenge was to get photography, The Beatles and willow trees involved.
and I think I pulled it off!
Anyways… here is how the picture came out! (just glad that we were in focus) sized a bit down for the web!

Thanks Sam!
that video was absolutely priceless!!
I just tried CNX2. It is great for getting the most out of problem NEF files, by allowing you to manipulate selective pixels without masks: uPoint. But the workflow is slow and does not measure up to lightroom.
Only a small fraction of my NEFs need CNX2.
I would love to see a CNX plugin for lightroom. It would give me the uPoint, better noise reduction and sharpening, but leave me with a single efficient workflow.
The video was a great example of how shutterbugs are being singled out.
“Capture NX2 unlocks my creativity in ways I never imagined. Using this software, the impossible becomes just an opinion. Capture NX2 is a RAW processor that allows you to be in the 21st century.”
Of course he says that, he has a book to sell. All of you book pundunt’s quotes have become meaningless. Gorman, Versace, McNally, Schewe, Kelby. Why would I trust a word from all of you? Scott seems to be at least a little bit of a straight shooter but would still say anything for a sale, the rest of the crew seem to be holding on to the photo industry by whatever means possible now that their work is out of date and the $$$ have dried up. Sad.
Quote for Rent?
I was watching the FOX news about DC and Photographs… Some times is hard to understand where this people (security guards, etc… ) create rules about photography… Just crazy.
But… Let me ask you something:
I am organizing the Fort Lauderdale Photowalk on June 22. Do I need a permit for that?

TT is an angry, angry person.
I think that he needs a…. (wait for it) TICKLE FIGHT!!
Seriously TT, of course an author would pump their book/DVD up; they have a product to sell and a family to feed. Do you think unicorns just prance up to your house and crap out money on your door step when you publish a book or produce a DVD? No (but that would be awesome). People have to buy the product, and the first step to buying a product is developing an interest in the product.
If you don’t appreciate Scott, Joe McNally, Vincent Versace, etc. then don’t pay attention to them. That is the beauty about living in a free country.
But for the record, I love Lightroom so I can’t imagine ever needing CNX2.
Scott,
What do you use to create the NX2 graphic shiny button on this page?
Where should we look to find a quick demo of creating these in say Fireworks?
Thanks.
Scott – I have done the dance back and forth between Lightroom and NX ever since I bought my D300 last year.
I love the interface and ease of use of Lightroom, but I have to admit that there is something lacking in the NEF interpretation compared to NX. I know you can approximate by adjusting in Lightroom, but with NX it is already there.
I know you shoot Nikon gear. Would you mind sharing a bit of your workflow?
Also @TT, you sound like you paid sticker price for your last car (KOTH reference). Why so bitter?
Scott and Joe have rekindled my love of photography. Sure they have books to sell, but both of them also give so much away for free. You can tell they just dig talking about photography.
Just in case anyone else is late to the party and is unable to view the “Photo Flap†video, try this link instead…
