Announcing My “Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers”

Hey gang: I’m totally psyched to announce that a whole new version of my Lightroom book, “The Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers” (From New Riders Press), is now available for preorder.
I had planned on just doing an update of the book, and including the new features of Lightroom 2, but….well…I wound up rewriting the whole book from scratch (well, at least 95% of it. There’s probably a paragraph or two still left over, but not much).
Here’s the thing: so much has changed since Lightroom 1 (well, there was Lightroom, then version 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 and now 2), but more than that, I’ve trained literally thousands of Lightroom users since I wrote that book, and I’ve learned first hand the challenges, questions, concerns, and workflow issues that today’s Lightroom users face, and I’ve incorporated that right into the book.
Plus, I’ve streamlined my own workflow so much, and I’ve learned so many new techniques; new ways of thinking about working with Lightroom and Photoshop, and I’ve heard from so many readers of the first book about what they wanted to learn next, that I am just busting to share this new stuff with everybody.
Be the first to get your copy; the book is available for pre-order from Amazon.com, or direct from KelbyTraining.com.

can’t wait to get this book and learn from the best! you’ve taught me a lot of things in LR via your blog and your book… all the best for you, scott!
Congratulations !!!
Looking forward to get a autographed copy at Photoshop World in Las Vegas.
I can’t wait to get my hands on one of those books!
Great job Scott!
Hello,
Just waiting to bought it. Have so read about Lightroom in your blog and learn so much, Have to buy one of your book now .
Thanks great and have a nice weekend !
Great news. I really liked your book an Lightroom 1. Looking forward to the new edition.
I am currently reading your 7-Point PS system book. So far, I think it’s awesome stuff.
Thanks for the great news Scott, I am looking forward to reading this book when I order Lightroom 2 I will be sure to order the book as well.
This is one to look forward to in the coming months. Cannot wait until Lightroom 2.0 is released, it will make a huge difference with the reported improvements over 1.X. Scott’s book will help us to negotiate the new features.
Note: it seems odd that even with NAPP membership discounts the price for this book is still more than $3 more than Amazon.com.
Just curious about one thing. Lightroom 2 has not yet been released. Yet I see your book, plus other books, even a plug-in, all have been written and announced. Are you and everyone else sure that what you explain will actually be part of the release program? Couldn’t the actual release program be different? Just wondering why everyone is jumping on a bandwagon that isn’t even around, except is Beta?
Otherwise, enjoyed your first Lightroom book – and your needed update when the program was actually released ….
Howard
My wife has just told me to change my glasses, they are the same price NAPP & Amazon… Sorry, my mistake!!
Hi Scott,
I have nearly the same question as Howard.before.
Do you have more information about the features in the LR 2.0 release as from the public beta?
Best regards
Thomas
Any idea when LR 2 is going to be released? I have decided to join the Lightroom revolution as soon as version 2 is available – I hope it is soon so it coincides with the book’s release.
Another fine Kelby production I’m sure!
Now, do I get bonus points for ordering it back in April?
Love your work,
Chris
Same Question? Is the final version available to be writing about all the new features.
Obviously it must be available in it’s final release version.
Joe
Sooo, as pointed out by Howard. Does that mean Mr. Scott Kelby has insider information on what will be shipping with Lightroom 2.0 or is this just an updated revision of your 1.0 book with only the beta 2.0 stuff explained?
even though he might not admit it
Well since the beta runs till sometime in August, I’m pretty sure Scott’s been informed already about all changes
Hey,
great to have another of your awesome books. Really like them.
By the way: A German source is reporting that LR 2 is already available on the Adobe License Web. This seems to be a restricted area on the Adobe website accessible for Adobe frame contract partners only.
Hope this is not just a rumor.
hi…
just like to echo the sentiments on here… any news on the release date of LR2?
dave
Great that you wrote a completely new book. It’s going to be interesting to read it and I can’t wait for the full release of LR 2.0!
I’m guessing that since the book hasn’t been released yet either, that there will be time for last minute additions / changes should they be needed.
I can’t wait!!!! And a Cape Cod picture on the cover makes it that much more a must have for me!
One question – when do find time to sleep? lol
Hey Scott–Will you be following “Rockin the House-ski”’s lead and signing ALL books that are ordered through NAPP? I know, I know, if there were only enough hours in the day… you can’t blame a guy for trying! Hey, I’m just excited to be “on the list” for the book. Keep up the good work that helps up learn!

I can’t wait to get my copy.
Any chance a digital version of the new book will be easily available. Printed books are so 20th century. Thanks.
Hi Scott:
This isn’t a LR2 question but just a comment if you thought about having an archive of your guest bloggers.
I enjoy your blog and sense of humor, but I wanted to direct some of my friends to your website because of the diverse viewpoints and styles that are expressed by your guest bloggers.
Even as I look forward to this book, count me in among those who are concerned that the rush to be first to market may mean that some last second additions to LR2 from Adobe would not be covered in your book. Unless you have some assurances from Adobe that the version you have based your book on is the complete 2.0 release …
Perhaps you could give us that same assurance since you are asking us to order your book in advance of the 2.0 release.
Thanks.
Settle down folks. Breathe. Scott isn’t going to release a book about the Beta version of Lr 2.0. You have to remember, the man is tapped into the Adobe Mothership – he practically knows all and sees all – and it benefits Adobe immensely to tip their hats and let him know exactly what’s coming down the pipe. Scott knows and loves his public – and he knows publishing – the dude will release the book we need, not something based on a beta.
I hope that relieved some fears – this will be a book about Lightroom 2, not about Lightroom 2 Beta.
That’s great news, Scott. I’m looking forward to it.
One question though. Given the miles you’ve logged with Lightroom – in your own personal use and in your classes – and having grown to know the best techniques and workflows, does this version of the book give a more focused presentation?
The book for Lightroom 1 was fairly broad. There were quite a few places where you’d say “You can do X in Lightroom but it might be better to use Photoshop” (NR, sharpening for example). Or you might say “Here’s 5 different ways to do the same thing in Lightroom” (menu, hotkey, toolbar, contextual menu, etc)
Does the book for Lightroom 2 come closer to your typical writing style of a single (best) path to accomplish a task? One that you would tell your closest friends (like all of us
)?
Really love all of your great work as author, communicator, and photographer.
Hi,
How many pages is this book?
Scott,
I’m ready to jump in to LR2 with both feet. I’ve been playing with the beta for a couple of months and am really impressed. I put in my order for the new book through Amazon! Sounds like a great upgrade for you book too.
I really like managing my photos (RAW and other types) in LR. Do you think the new version of Photoshop will make use of some of the new LR features? Or ideally I’d like the workflow between LR and Photoshop to be invisible and seamless. What do you think?
Hi,
When are you going to announce the details on the big “thing” going on over August 23? My calendar and I would be delighted to know! : )
Thanks
Can’t wait for both LR2 and Book2!
I can’t wait for both Lightroom 2 and this book to come out!!! Scott, you consistently write “the” book on Photoshop and Lightroom. Whenever I have someone ask how to learn something, without hesitation, I reccommend your books and videos (by now EVERYONE should be on the KelbyTraining.com bandwagon).
Anyway, just wanted to say a huge thanks!
This book is probably going to be more awesome than the first then. Shame one can’t go to PSW to get an autographed copy. =P
Umm, about the title: “The Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers” — is someone doing a LR title for Analog Photographers? If not, the title seems somewhat pleonastic . .
great! now i have to buy lightroom! you’re breaking all records
great news
btw, just saw you updated your portfolio -amazing new photos! especially the one with the cat! wow!!!!!!! the clarity is remarkable!
Scott and others who are part of the feedback and beta testing process have had access to builds of Lightroom beyond the public beta for some time. One person told me that the final version is considerably different from beta. Obviously they didn’t go into more detail than that and we will just have to wait and see what the future holds. Wish we knew the date.
i recently got my copy of your Digital Photography Book Vol 2 and I have to agree that the book is just amazing!
I’m so excited to hear about this new Lightroom book. I’m sure being a daily user of Lightroom, this book is going to be of great help in learning some cool new kelby style tricks.
Have a great day Scott
Scott,
Can you and your publisher make it available in a Kindle version? I’ve seen that you’ve done that with some of your other (older) books. As I now prefer to have my books, including the tech kind, ‘kindleized’, getting this one (which is pretty much a must have anymore) for Kindle would be outstanding. Or is it awesome? Who knows? Who Cares?! Just ‘kindleize’ all your books and I’ll be happy. Or is it thrilled? I don’t…well, uh, I’ll just stop now.
Hi Scott,
I’m a big fan and I read your blog religiousl , even though I’m on a canon bias, I always enjoy the multi-layered sincerity of your blog and books. I can’t even begin to tell you the number of I’ve referenced your books for a piece of knowledge or even just a bit of “you can do” encouragement. I know you live in the Tampa/St. Pete area and I myself am a local. I was wondering if you could let me know of any photo get togethers or walks in the area where I can get with some folks and discuss what I love…photography.
Sometimes I feel like I exist in a black hole in tampa, even though from some of the activity on flickr I know that’s not the case, I have a hard time finding social interactions like this.
I understand you’re busy and probably get requests like this all the time, but if ever you’re out shooting I’d love to tag along and learn.
Thanks for you time,
-Nordia
I know Amazon is very pessimistic about release dates, but they are saying January 10, 2009. Tell me it ain’t so, Scott! I have to feed the hunger soon, or I have to give back the Lightroom poker chip to my anonymous group. In regards to the release date of the software, I’m more interested in the upgrade price or deals.
You can be assured that Scott (and other key players) books will have all the features in the final version. The beta you guys get was “locked down” awhile ago but a few key people (lets keep them anonymous ) are alpha and beta testers who get regularly updated builds and are told when there’s a lock on the UI just so they can get their books out, with the proper info for you to read. And yes, there probably will be some surprises in terms of features and goodies you haven’t yet seen in the public beta that Scott and others are fully aware of and have written about. So any major book on Photoshop or Lightroom will come out with up to the minute information in terms of functionality and UI.
Hi Gang:
Amazon.com’s “January 2009″ date is just there because they’re not allowed to “let on” when Lightroom 2 is scheduled to ship. Book publishers have to be careful not to post the exact ship date of a book, because it would give out information on the software release date that hasn’t been made public.
So, you can ignore that January 2009 date.
-Scott
Hi Scott!
How does your work flow look like when writing your books? I’m interested in writing something myself and some advice from the grand master (of writing books) himself would be the best thing that can happen to me. =)
Best regards
//Robin from Sweden
All your books are just great. I have learned so much on Photoshop by reading your books. Have been trying to use Lightroom instead of Bridge last months but just haven´t been able to get comfortable with it yet. I find me to often open up Adobe Bridge. I´m going to buy this book and I´m pretty sure it will make me a Lightroom expert in just a few days.
Hey Scott,
I can’t wait to start reading this book. I just have to thank you for all the help that I have found on your Books and DVDs.
Paulo Jordao
Hi Scott- Can we assume that like you did with your great LR 1.x book, if there are late breaking changes or a .x release shortly after you’ve gone to press, that you’ll try to release a PDF supplement? That was a giant help last time and something we’re seeing and appreciating from you and other authors on various publishers.
Also is that pic on the cover from the 10/07 DLWS on Cape Cod? Chatham Lighthouse Beach fence?
Sounds great. Congrats on your new book.
I’ll certainly get it and use it to finally get me started in Lightroom. About time I switch from using Bridge..
Gentlemen. It is apparent that at least some of you are perhaps a little sceptical about Scott’s new LR 2.0 book.
Perhaps you need to read between the lines here. Scott will be , I am sure under a NDA in respect of LR 2.0. As we all know he writes superb books and there is absolutely no chance that he would release a LR 2.0 book if there was any chance it may be superseded by late updates. Presumably, because of his NDA, he cannot just say “here,s the book LR 2.0 will be released next week”! But, what I believe he has done here is go as far as he can which confirms this release is around the corner. I would say early August?
Terry White commented thus yesterday:- “Nikon D700 RAW shooters will be happy with the soon to be released Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 upgrade (can’t say any more than that).”
So thanks Scott, light at the end of the tunnel and looking forward to the book and LR 2.0.
Nick.
