Join Me For The First Ever Worldwide Photowalk On (you guessed it), Saturday, August 23rd!
You gotta watch the video below—it tells the whole story. We’re gonna have a blast!!!!!
Here’s the link to the site!
(NOTE: Lots more cities around the world, more than 100 total, will be added, but if your city isn’t on the list yet, click this link to see how you can host one in your city. Also, we’ll be updating the site each day with more cities, so check back often to see when a city near you gets added!)
The walk is sponsored by Adobe Systems, Wacom, Epson, CDW, NAPP, Peachpit Press, MPIX, Kelby Training, and Photo Walk Pro.

@LoriC
I worked in radio for 3 1/2 years.
if you called in for a contest you waived all rights to your name for the station to use.
You have to understand that NAPP is a MAJOR organization they have to cover all grounds. Does anyone honestly believe they would use more than 10 of the tens of thousands of photo’s that will be submitted? It is a legality. and while yes you are waiving the rights to your work, its a photo from a photo walk, not the lead story for Time we’re talking about. It would be one thing if they’re asking us to set up a shoot on an aircraft carrier, or the top of the empire state building, but its a walk through your downtown. I think we’re jumping the gunn on calling NAPP and CO. the Rockefeller conglomerate
So far the link is not working still for anything other than the main page and I am very anxious to see if there is anything going on in Macon, GA (my little town)!! If not….heck, I may just go myself and do my own ‘thang’!
Hello Scott!
I love the idea! Ignore the complainers… I just wanna have FUN!!!
The video with Matt is great, especially when you two are goofing around about chimping… look in the background and there’s RC SO CHIMPING!!!
Looking forward to the event in NYC!
Carl
What a great Idea! Just got done signing up for mine, Can’t wait.
Looks like fun but, the closet city is at least 6 hours away. What about the midwest, I live in Southeast Missouri? St. Louis or Memphis.
I wanted to address the TOC issue that has been mentioned here a couple of times. I wrote an article about this a couple of days ago and where this differs from many other TOCs is that there is no intent to sell your images as stock photography like so many other contests have done. In order for NAPP to actually post the submitted images on their website you have to give them certain rights otherwise they would be publishing without consent. Also, they want to use the images as promotional tools in the future. I am pretty sure that if they personally called you and said “Hey Bob, would you mind if we used one of your photowalk shots in an issue of PhotoshopUser magazine?” that you would probably have no problem with that at all. And if you are lucky enough to have the grand prize winning shot, wouldn’t you want them to show it off for you? I think the answer is yes. Finally, this contest is not looking to remove your rights from your images. That in itself is a huge deal. The problem is that the wording for all of these permissions has to meet the lawyer test so that there will be no future liability to them down the road. Seriously though, if you have heartburn about the TOC, just don’t submit any images. That in no way means that you can’t attend the photowalk and enjoy the day with other photographers. Trust me when I say that it is a lot of fun!
Jeff
PS - Bryan Pearson, there is a photowalk site that is sponsoring this walk and I am sure that Trevor from Photowalking.Org would be happy that photowalking is being promoted in general. He might even be joining me for the photowalk as he will be in town.
excellent! i’m going to register for nyc.
Mag (from NYC, in case you need someone to walk you around -even though you have been here a million times
Scott and Matt showed up at Jeff Revell’s DC Photowalk in Adams Morgan this last March. It was an absolute blast. So much so, that just maybe we “reved” up the enthusiasm for this event….

I really do like your blog, just thought I would let you know,I read it every day. It would be great to be involved in a photo walk of some sort but, I live in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and well not much every happens hear, maybe you could try to include this small town or a nearby town sometime for me, or let me know any way how I could get something started hear. Thank you, Keith
If your ONLY motivation for participation is the “contest” and the “prize” stay home. Otherwise take it for what it is - a worldwide photo walk. Enjoy the simple fact that you can spend a day outside - with people that have a common interest - having fun taking pictures - sharing information and maybe a bite to eat. There are certainly worse ways to spend your Saturday.
I’m signed up for the DC Photowalk. Can’t wait!
LOL! Glenview is *not really* “Chicago”….
@ Jeff (#55)
You and others have made good points. After having the remainder of the day to think about this, I have to agree with you.
So my post (#10)? Not so much. Apologies to all it may have offended. And certainly no diss to Scott and the NAPP folks (who work right down the road from me).
I have registered for the Photowalk and will enjoy it in the spirit it was conceived. My previous post notwithstanding, I am actually quite excited about it!
Thanks for all the “attitude adjustments”.
Michael
I hope there will be one in Kelowna, BC Canada!
I have commented, hours ago. But it hasn’t been approved yet.
I’m not too excited about Scott hijacking the photowalking community to market his new book.
Yes, it’s cool that photowalking in general is being promoted, but at what cost? I think now I’ll be working hard to disassociate photowalking from being considered a marketing tool.
I probably won’t be joining Scott’s photowalk.
just becareful, rethink giving them a great photo…it might be worth a lot, and NAPP will own it….sad
Would love to see one happen in Boston, I’d love to do it!
@ John (#65)
Please read the TOC again because you have got it wrong. NAPP will not own rights to your photograph in any way, shape or form. You still own the rights to your image and control it in every way except the following:
What you are granting them by submitting your image is there ability to use your image for promotion of NAPP, whether it be a tutorial, on there website, in there magazine, etc. They will not be paying you for this right and they will always have this right, but they cannot turn around and sell or give your image to any other organization to use. That right is still exclusively your own.
And as Jeff Revell and I have said, you don’t have to submit a photo in order to participate in a walk and enjoy the day with your fellow photographic community.
Hope that helps clarify.
Houston, we have a problem! We don’t have a photowalk scheduled August 23!!!! We need a leader and someone to represent the largest state in the UNION!!!!!! I’ll be the first to sign up as a follower!!!
I think this is a great idea and I’ve just signed up for the Detroit walk. Should be fun!
Scott is saying 100+ cities and right now the site has significantly less than that. Is there any plan on when cities will be rolled out? I don’t want to miss out on getting in on a photowalk with the 50 person limit, but I’m also hoping a closer city is added.
Will this be BYOP (bring your own permits)?
Hi Scott,
Awesome Idea, I will certainly be joining the London walk (the tune you were thinking of is “Lambeth walk”).
Hey i’m no pro, just a guy that enjoys shooting pics, and personally I’d welcome any exposure my images got. I dont get all the fuss over the rights.
Take some great shots, hand over some winning photos and get exposure aswell as winning some great prizes
im finding it hard to find the downside.
Great blog BTW, i read everyday but am not much of a comment writer, in fact this is my first! YAY ME!
Craig
Londinium (as the Romans called it)
Scott;
I wanted to host a photowalk for Philadelphia PA and the site wouldn’t allow me, said I was an array file ????? lol

Hi Scott,
We do have similar Photowalks here as well.. except that we are in Singapore!
Do take a look at my webbie for some of the shots taken during the walkarounds…
One interesting event we have here is Photohunt. A set of photos were pre-shot, and distributed among participants, they would need to find these shots and re-shoot them (hopefully exactly). This really help in improving the photographic skills and the work on the “eye”.

Hi Scott,
I have requested to lead in walk in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, but when I filled out the request form, I did not realize I had to list any qualifications or experience.
Will this prohibit me from leading a walk? Can I update my profile with the necessary info?
This is an awesome idea. I have wanted to do this for a long time, but now we have the backing, support and motivation from the biggest names in the industry.
Thanks
Darrell

How about listing the cities in alphabetaclical order by continent? That would make it easier to sort through. Also might want to differentiate between Portland, Maine and Oregon on the pulldown list! Wouldn’t want folks to sign up for the wrong one!
I had the same issue, just reported it to the website team (via contact).
http://temp.amenthes.de/photowalk_error.jpg is a screenshot of the error. I can’t really pinpoint the error from here. I tried several times with different files.
I’m registered for the SF walk. I’m looking forward to it. Heck, if there are 49 others out shooting, I’m bound to meet someone cool! Given that I’ve been shooting with a DSLR for less than 6 months, I’m looking forward to having a blast and learning a thing or twelve.
I guess some of the more established folks will be fretting about rights, and that’s fine. I agree with the other comments about going, having fun, and not entering the contest if you don’t like the rules. It doesn’t have to be a big deal… If you don’t like the rules, don’t play the game.
Me… I’d love some free passes to PS World or even a free book. I’m entering!
@ Shawn from Madison
Shawn,
You should sign up to be a leader in Madison. I’m about an hour away and would try my hardest to get there if it was on the list. If not, it looks like Chicago is the closest.
Hi Scott!
I popped in on the 28th to sign up to lead a walk in Prescott, AZ. The idea sounds great and I’ve already gotten a good response through my blog, so I hope Prescott gets on the map!
I also wanted to say, the Photoshop Lightroom 2 book sounds great….but….. I just got used to my workflow in Lightroom!
Looks like I’ll be downloading the update today, and I’ll be placing my order for book #2!
Thanks for the great publications! Every person I tell about the Digital Photography book loves it, and like me, ends up piling a collection of Kelby books in their homes!
I signed up as walk leader!!!!
I hope I make the cut…
Hi Scott,
Great idea, looks like fun. I’d like to sign up. Unfortunately, even though it looks like the Terms & Conditions have been modified on the basis of the complaints above, they still prevent me from participating. I have an exclusive contract with iStockphoto to distribute royalty-free imagery, and they have confirmed that your Terms & Conditions would violate that contract.
Given iStockphoto is a major sponsor of some of your other projects, like Photoshop User TV, it seems a pity that you couldn’t work out Terms & Conditions that would provide what you need, while not violating their exclusive contributor contracts. I am sure between you and the smart people at iStock licensing you could work out something appropriate (e.g. the right for you to have a Rights Managed license for a limited time and specified, if broad, uses, with no fee to the photographer, for those images that won the best image in each city, for instance). That’d be a great step forward…
Scott
its interesting that it will happen in Bangladesh too … we are looking forward to that day and hoping the weather would be good.
