News doesn’t get much bigger than this; today Adobe announced that they are now shipping the final version of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 (Whoo Hooo!).
You can read the official press release from Adobe right here.
Check out Adobe’s Lightroom 2 home page at Adobe.com
Congratulations to the Lightroom Team at Adobe for delivering such a kick butt product!!!! I’m psyched!

Holy crap! Sorry, can’t help but get excited! Wow… this is great!
Woohoo is right!
The new version works very well and has some great new features (even a few not in the public beta)! Here is my blow-by-blow review of all the features:

Scott,
WOW. You are totally on top of this news/release with all the new training. I can’t wait to get my hands on the final shipping version.
I’ve made a short post with a side-by-side comparison of an image opened with camera raw 4.4 and then with the new standard profile for my camera. WOW! This image always puzzled me (looking very different across NX and Lightroom) but they seem to have nailed these new profiles.

Finally, we get the manufacturer’s own settings in Adobe products. In my opinion this will make a lot of people very happy.
Well it was woo hoo, but then what the.
Time for a rant!!!
The upgrade US price is $99, the upgrade Aust price is $179.
The current exchange rate for US to the australian dollar is about 0.96cents.
Probably the same for the UK.
I don’t even think I can buy from the US as I can’t register that product in australia.
Man I really don’t like this!!!
Rant over!
Buy the way, thanks for the news scott!!!
Super neat. Looking forward to playing with it.

Hej Scott
Thanks for the news.
How about a blog article about the different prices in the different countries. This is really just a scandal. The exact and same version costs in Switzerland 175CHF, thats about 170$….
And as also stated by another Commenter it is the same in other countries!
Thanks
I agree with James here. In Germany, the upgrade is 99 Euros which is about 150 US$. That sucks!
Otherwise I am looking forward to the new version.
Hi Scott,
Here in Singapore the price it $129.00 + Tax so yes if one isn’t in the US then we all are disadvantaged. It does suck but guess what it won’t stop us lining up to purchase what looks like a Fantastic version.
Cheers
And to think I thought today was going to be a waste.
Praying for rain so I have a reason to stay in all day!
Good Morning Scott,
Thanks for the heads up on the release of Lr2.
Just went to Adobe site and upgraded.
ATTENTION NAPP members, don’t forget your discount code for Adobe Products !!
Hello Scott,
Thanks for all the great gen on Lightroom 2.0. I want to upgrade from my 1.4 version BUT would you believe ADOBE want to rip off all their UK customers!
They want £83.49 for the download version, the equivalent of $161 dollars for an upgrade that will cost its USA customers only $99. Thats over 60% more! I know the exchange rate is in our favour at the moment and that we always pay more for such things in the UK but I would expect a 20% premium at most.
Try as I have I cannot fool their web site into letting me buy from the USA store due to my UK billing address. do you have any ideas on how I can get it for USA the price or do you know someone at ADOBE that you can pass this message to just to register my complaint.
Rgds Toby ….. Disgusted of UK
Hi Scott,
you complanied that there was no option to shoot tethered, I also was really sad about this.
Do you think it might make it in an update in the near future, or would that be too much to hope for?
-jr
Scott,
Quick question that I’ve searched the web seeking answers without success. I just upgraded to Lightroom 2, having loved the various 1 iterations. My question: Is Lightroom 2 and upgrade in the sense that it will read everything produced in Lightrom 1.4.1? Also, what version of Camera Raw is it running–4.4.1?
Robbing their own customers of their money as long as they are not in USA. Period. Shame on you Adobe!
Unfortunately, had I done the math I wouldn’t have upgraded even though LR v2.0 is absolutely great!! But this kind of treatment from Adobe for its own customers sucks big time!!!!
Scott thanks for the good news on the update but could you put in a word to Adobe who seem to want to rob their non-US customers!!
Are they going to bring justice to this madness?
Are they going to reimburse people who bought the upgrade at extra price.
Man this is unfair!!
PLAIN WRONG!
Scott, on another note the videos on LR2 Learning centre don’t stream. Even on a T1 line I have to wait 5 – 10 minutes minutes before I can start the video to come up. Also having a download link would really help for those that don’t want to watch it online.
Great news! I was planning to order it after trying the beta, but I now find that in Finland the download price (for the same English version as in US) is 304 Euros = 472 U.S. dollars!
If it was for shipping of a localized version I could understand, but why such a huge price difference depending on the location of your pc/mac? It is the same product!
I guess this means Adobe doesn’t plan on working the bugs out of Version 1.4. Typical Adobe
Scott;
Does your new book Lightroom 2 contain all the features that came out on the final release, or just the last beta 1.4?
You guys are really on the ball,
I just upgraded and the NAPP discount was not accepted, I tried four or five times. I ordered anyway….Scott do you know if Adobe has plans to allow NAPP members to get the discount?
Thanks!
Leigh
Leigh,
Just so you know, the NAPP code worked just fine for me.
Will members of NAPP get a special upgrade price for Lightroom 2?
Hi
There I was tootling along with LR1.4. Then I see your inspirational videos. WOW, I have to have this LR2 its so fantastic especially the integration with Photoshop. I teach PS an am preparing some resource on LR1.4 so what could be better than an upgrade( c’mon please ask ?).
Well an upgrade that works would be nice. All the juicy bits that I thought would be keeping me awake at night are well, keeping me awake at night but for the wrong reasons. I have now spent a totally wasted 48 hours installing, reinstalling, uninstalling and probably some other stallings as well and still it will not work.
Just thought a bit of balance would be nice.
Apart from this moan, I think your books and videos are great(apart from the one telling me how good LR2 works with PS3 that is)
Best Regards
Ken Fisher
Have I missed something, or did they not fix the major slideshow hole of not being able to export the show along with the music? Ya, works great as long as you have LR, but what if you want to burn the show to a disk? Is there still no music without the workaround? Aghhhhhhh
I just upgraded and my NAPP discount worked fine (once I found where to enter it – upper lefthand corner order summary has a tab for coupon code).
My first catalog (which worked earlier this morning in LR 1.4) got a “corrupted” message. Time to pull out the backup…
The second one worked fine.
Great fun awaits!
Hi Scott;
I really need to store my images in a network drive.
Will Lightroom(any) support this feature?
Or,
Is there a workaround that yo can offer?
Lightroom is Great.
Thanks.
Add my voice to those of us in the UK who are appalled at the price differential between UK and USA.
Would be very interested to hear Adobe’s rationale for this price difference.
Product, however, is certainly first class on early inspection.
Thanks for all the insights, training and tipps.
I was always wondering, how does it work that you have a book ready just when the actual program is released.
Thanks for filling the blanks.
Lightroom 2.0 is great but much slower on my computer than Lightroom 1.4.1. Is that normal? My main Catalog is over 5,000 photos, but not that big. I do run the catalog and store the photos on an external HD, though. Any advice?
Will Lightroom work with CS2?
I know you need CS3 for integration. But what about the limited integration between Lightroom 1.4.1 and CS2.
Will that still be available between Lightroom 2 and CS2
Scott
Like many other non US customers I don’t like the large differential in the pricing of both the upgrade and full products.
However I take even greater exception to the discrimination against existing European customers in that the upgrade price in the US is about 33% of the full product cost ($99 v $299 – for download) whereas in the UK the upgrade is nearly 40% of the full product (£68.99 v £175 – for download less Irish tax). Similar percentage differentials apply for the other European countries, whereas the Asian an Oceania countries seem to have a 33% differential.
Obviously this is not something your or the NAPP’s responsibility. However, might you be able to do something about the NAPP discount only being available at the US store which does not allow purchases by people without US addresses and credit cards.
A tidbit to pass along…
I was very excited about the 64-bit support, which was a big motivator for me to upgrade. I just want to pass on that print driver functionality is not fully supported in this mode. In order to use LR printing, I have to restart LR in 32-bit mode, which makes it less “seamless”. (EPSON 4000 with latest MAC Leopard driver, but probably the case for other printers as well…)
- I am still happy with the upgrade.
Serious issues regarding perfomance and in particular slow responses, freeze ups and crashes when using the new local adjustment tools are being reported extensively (please see Adobe Light Room Forum http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b604cf/34 ). Here is what I posted there.
“I would like to add my voice and 12 other peoples (friends and my students that I have polled) to the debate hoping Adobe are reading this. Across 19 computers all a minimum of duo processors with bags of RAM, Windows and Macs OS’s the slowness issue, freeze-ups and crashes especially with the new local adjustments tools are exactly as being described in these posts. As a computer “guru†I have to believe there is a serious code issue that only Adobe can resolve. The various suggested workarounds such as rebuilding previews, turning off Auto mask can help ease the situation but will not resolve what I and many believe to be serious flaws. Hope Adobe is reading and listening to this. What is strange is that LR 2.0 is slower and buggier than the Beta version.”
In my opinion NAPP is the worlds best Adobe advocate (and for me the best association I belong to) I hope that Scott and the great NAPP team are aware of what is being said and can look into the problems and see what Adobe are doing about it. I LOVE the product and the promise it holds BUT I have had to go back to LR 1.4 (bohoo) since I cannot afford the time it takes on any of my 3 computers with LR 2.0
I spoke to Adobe and they told me the NAPP discount did not apply to the upgrade
There seems to be a big bug in using the edit in photoshop feature from LR. The editted picture does not stack back with the original. I’ve spent quite a bit of time trying to figure this out. (Although the new bursh tool is cool,I haven’t decided if I like it – there are still things I will prefer CS3 for. ) What I am seeing is that the picture is in the catolog in a duplicate folder structure. If I try to move the picture, it says it’s already there. I can import or syncronize, but it doesn’t stack next to the picture. I can’t see doing this everytime I work on a picture – I see myself losing edits and generally creating myself an origanziational mess.
I see myself switching back to old version of LR and wanting a refund.
I’m not having a problem with slowness or freeze-ups. Have two quad core processors.
-well maybe I found the too obvious solution ? If open a file in photoshop.exe (crt+alt+e) instead of photoshop cs3 (ctrl+e) the edit does stay with the original. Photoshop.exe opens CS3 so I’m not catching why one would work and the other wouldn’t and is there some reason I would be better to open it through Ctrl+E ???
thanks for any advice -Nancy
Hi there,
I haven’t upgraded yet to Lightroom 2, I am tempted, but I was wondering, if this version allows for export or save the Slideshows in a different format that just .pdf? and also keep the music? right now, I have to add the music in Acrobat…..and it won’t import in any other format aside of pdf.
Thank you,
Alexandra
sorry, I meant to say it won’t EXPORT in any other format such as flash, or mpeg, or quicktime.
Tx,
Alexandra
I should have listened to the man in my head. With over 25 yrs programming and using commercial programs that little guy was saying wait until a rev or tow of Lr 2 is available before buying it. I’ve had the “pleasure” of trying to get Lr2 to edit a .dng image in CS3 to no avail. CS3 opens but the image never shows up. Called Adobe tech support and ended up getting the issue pushed up the tech support hierarchy with, as of yet, no resolution. LR1.4.1 works fine with the same image, opening it in CS3 and allowing edits then returing it to Lr 1.4.1 upon completion. It’s difficult to believe this was beta tested.
Dear Scott:
My name is Kenneth. I was using the PC version Photoshop CS3 and the Lightroom 2 in the mean time. It was amazing, but I have a problem during using the Lightroom 2. I really hope that you can solve it out for me.
Here are the problem:
When I was trying to do the Panorama Photos and clicked all the photo I want, and then I go the “Edit In” I can only see the Edit in the Adobe Photoshop CS3″ have been turn in the colour Black but the item like the “Merge the Panorama in the Photoshop” or the “Open in the Smart Object” still in the colour grey that means I can be use it !!
So I really want to know these kind of fuction and merge to the photoshop, is that any other setting to make these fuction work out !!
Thank you for your kind attention and I was looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards
Kenneth.H
I am SUCH a beginner and probably starting at the middle and end of Photoshop, etc.
So here is a question about Lightroom that may sound dumb:
Once one is really into using Lightroom comfortably, will that person also use Photoshop much of the time? The question I am asking is how much of Photoshop does Lightrom replace?
Thanks,
Barbara
P.S. I don’t have a website
I think Adobe needs to fix a problem that caused me many hours with Adobe Tech support and Apple tech support. After I installed my new Lightroom 2, a window would pop up and prevent me from using LR2. The window said”error has occurred in locating modules. The resolution came after an Apple tech spent 2 hours helping me migrate all my files to another user account. Not an easy task.
This shouldn’t have happened. It supposedly is a user specific problem but I know others have had the problem as well.
The following was submitted to NAPP and is worth repeating here (IMHO).
I would like to suggest Scott, Matt and friends take some time to point out (even warn) potential upgraders/purchasers of LR2 that the program is having significant performance problems and is not ready for prime time. It is a great program when it works and I moved to it because of the press Scott and Matt gave it. I, and many like me, are sorely disappointed. I think a little realism rather than promotion is in order.
Hi Scott
I hope this method will ellicit a response from you. The problem – I pre-ordered the Lightroom 2 book from your website and waited for its arrival with anticipation. It hasn’t arrived, so I tried to send an email to enquire when it would be sent. The email bounced back – repeatedly.
Please could you let me know when I will be able to receive the book – I need the help!
Hopefully
Penny
HI Scott,
I like Photoshop user a lot, it always has great information. I have Photoshop CS3 but don’t really use it too much anymore. What I would like to see is more article on Lightroom and maybe you might think about starting Lightroom TV?
Best,
Mike Edgeton
O.K. It is now Aug.28 and I can find no comments from Adobe as too if they even intend to fix the problems too many folks are having with LR2.
Actually a bit disappointed you have not made a mention of all this. Makes me loose a bit of confidence in you, surely you must know lots of us folks are not able to round trip, sticky sliders, slow brushes, etc, etc.
Enough time has passed since release that someone needs to speak up and let us paying customers know what is going on.
Why would I need any NAPP lr2 training if my purchased LR2 does not function in several apspect?
Hi Scott,
I have a laptop HP Pavilion and its intel centrino can i use lr2 in my laptop
I did custom color calibration for my printer Canon Pro 9000 with spyder 3 studio. Photoshop Elements 6 finds it LR2 does not. Any Ideas?
I am loving LR2
I have the same question as Kenneth on #46.
Thank you!
Hi Scott and Matt,
I love your talk and pictures. You both are awesome. When I read your books, I always smile because you answer question and thought. I went to some of your NAPP, I always learned so much, not little of course with interpreters. There are some concerns I need to share with you, I am deaf person and many other deaf people really want to know more from your lecture, video , or whatever but we cannot hear. When we open http://www.scottkelby.com., my eyes are wide open for new information and new ideas but always feel disappointed with video in website. I teach Digital Photography to deaf high school in MD., weoften discuss why cant you add the captioned in video. I hope both of you or one of you read this message, not your manager. smile. Can you change for the better for all of us?
Thank you and I will continue read your books and look into your website and wait for a new change.
Thank you, Lorraine
