My World Wide PhotoWalk Q&A
Since we launched my World Wide Photowalk on Monday, things have been just crazy. We thought it would be popular, but honestly we were unprepared for the avalanche of interest, sign-ups, and people who want to lead Photo Walks in their cities around the world.
We were also flooded with questions, so I thought I’d do a quick Q&A to answer some of the most common questions.
Q. Are more cities being added?
A. Absolutely—so far there are 33 cities, but new ones are being added daily (just yesterday we added Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, and Cincinnati (led by none other than David Ziser himself), along with Manila in the Philippines, Ybor City (Tampa), and Malmo, Sweden, among others.
Q. Are there are lot of cities pending approval?
A. Oh yeah—about 108 more cities so far. We had to add a little more automation to the “becoming a leader” process, and by tomorrow we expect that 40 or 50 of those will be awarded a Photo Walk city, and added to the list shortly thereafter.
Q. Will some big cities have more than walk the same day?
A. Yup. When you see a listed city that’s followed by a name in parenthesis, that usually means there are multiple walks in different areas of the city. For example; New York City (Chinatown). They’ll be other New York locations as well.
Q. Are walks starting to fill up yet?
A. A number of cities are already completely full, and registration is now closed (unless someone else can lead an additional walk in that city).
Q. Have you added any more prizes to the photo contest part?
A. You Betcha! Besides the Grand Prize, I’ll be choosing 10 other photos from the walks as Honorable Mentions to win a full shipping version of Lightroom 2 (courtesy of our friends at Adobe Systems).
Q. What if I don’t want to enter the photo contest?
A. You don’t have to. That’s just to make it more fun, so if you just want to walk and shoot—no sweat.
Q. Is it too late to apply to lead a walk in my city?
A. Not at all (just be patient once you apply). Here’s the link to apply if you want to lead a walk in your area.
Q. I’ve registered online, but I haven’t heard anything. What’s up?
A. When you sign up, we automatically send you an email for you to confirm, and when you get that email, you need to click the link to make your registration active.
Q. On the video on the PhotoWalk web site (link), I saw RC ‘chimping’ in the background right when you and Matt were talking about chimping . Did you guys plan that?
A. RC is always chimping, so we didn’t have to plan it out. He’s very “Chimpy”
Q. So who were the people shooting in the background, and were they really shooting?
A. That was: RC Concepcion, NAPP’s Executive Director Larry Becker (wearing the Kata backpack), My Executive Assistant Kathy Siler (in a bright red shirt), our Marketing Diva Mary Laurenitis (in a Maroon shirt), and NAPP Chief Operating Officer Dave Moser’s Executive Assistant Kristin Kupniewski. And yes, they were all really shooting (well, as far as I know).
Q. Admit it—isn’t this just a big promotion for you new Lightroom 2 Book?
A. Yes–I admit it. I thought it would be really cool to do something different to celebrate the release of Lightroom 2, and bring attention to my new update to the book (OK, I didn’t just update the book with the new features in Lightroom 2; I rewrote the whole thing from scratch, (which was crazy hard), and I added some new features, and more workflow stuff, and a live video workflow, and blah, blah, blah. I put an awful lot of blood, sweat, and tears into this new version of the book to make even better than the first edition, and it came out even better than I had hoped. I really think it’s going to help an awful lot of people, and as the author I want as many people to know about it, and hopefully get the book themselves, as possible.
Q. I can’t believe you just plugged your book like that, and yet you didn’t even include a link for where to buy it?
A. Wow, thanks for catching that. You can preorder it now (I’ve already finished writing it, and its in production now), and get it as soon as it’s released (soon), at either Amazon.com, or Barnes & Noble.com, or direct from us a KelbyTraining.com
Q. Are we going to need permits?
A. As long as you’re walking on public sidewalks there’s no need to have a permit. Unless of course, the cops arrive. In that case…run!
Q. Are you guys taking all our copyrights so you can do a rights grab and steal our photos and then use them for your own unrelated brochures, and websites, and maybe sell them as stock photography?
A. That’s the plan. While some contests just want your permission to use the winning photos to help promote future contests, we thought—why stop there? If you enter our photo contest, you not only give up your copyright to your photos forever (not just the ones you enter in the contest—all your photos), we actually come to your house and confiscate the camera you took the shots with in the first place.
Q. Really?
A. Of course not! Our attorneys want us to make sure you know that if you win the grand prize (or another big prize) that it’s OK for us to show other people your photo, and then use it (giving credit to you as the photographer), to promote future photo walks. We don’t want you to give up your copyright; it’s not a rights-grab, and it’s nothing sinister, we just want to stay out of trouble. That’s all.
So, that’s the scoop for today, folks. Remember, new cities are being added daily (with a bunch being added in the next few days), so keep an eye on the “World Wide PhotoWalk Site” and click on the Cities page to see what’s new (the list on the front is static as of now, but I’m trying to change that tomorrow).

Your blog is the only blog where I spend my mornings resfreshing the browser to get the daily post. =)
Always very fun to read your posts.
Thanks Scott!
Regards
Robin from Stockholm,Sweden.
Scott, i love your great sense of humor!
Beside we got many open questions answered.
Thanks and by the way regards to Kathy
Thomas
I have to agree with Robin….
-Bob
(still waiting for Boston to make the list)
Yeah, I feel like Bob does. I’ll drive up to Portland if I have to but Boston would be much easier.

Scott,
Great blog (I love the Q and A’s) post.
Thanks for the clarification on the photo rights thing.
Michael
Hi Scott,
What Robin says rings true here too. For me it’s watchning SportsCenter while reading Scott Kelby.com, and e-mail while clearing the cobwebs.
I wish I had the day off on the 23rd because Oklahoma City would be an excellent choice to do a walk. With the Bombing Memorial to the revised Bricktown Area, a walk here would be amazing.
See ya Scott,
mike
Somebody PLEASE host a walk in Hampton Roads, Virginia — I would gladly volunteer to do so, but my n00bness prevents it.
Scott, thanks for your effort in this!
Scott,
The NYC (Chinatown) photowalk is the only one listed and is now closed
even though your blog today stated there are other photowalks in the NYC
area
Please let us know when you will list additional NYC Photowalks to register for as I have not seen any others yet listed
in the NYC Metropolitan area.
Thanks.
Larry
Haven’t seen one for the Hollywood, Bev Hills areas yet but its been a day or two since I’ve looked at the location list..
Scott,
I was on the Orlando page and then clicked on sign up. I filled in the form, but didn’t see the choose city drop down. I hit submit and the form came back to tell me that I needed to pick a city. Oops. So I did it again the right way, but now it tells me that my email address is already in use and will not allow me to sign up.
I used the contact form to explain my situation, but I haven’t heard back.
Can you help?
Thanks,
Steve
Do you get rights to all of the photos of anyone that posts a comment on your blog? Are you going to hack into my home computer and take them now? Once you look thru them let me know if you have any tips on how to improve my photos.
Thanks again for a great read.
I filled out for the Walk in NY when it was only 6 people there but had not gotten a confirmation and now it’s full. What do I do.
Scott,
Well, I hope somebody over here (South of the Netherlands) will sign up as leader so I can participate. I know what your thinking, but with my point and shoot camera and little experience as a photographer I would be a louzy leader.
Even though you are using the walks to promote your book I think the idea is great. Any event creating a bond between people is a great event.
Take care,
Marianne
desperatly waiting for Paris (FR) to be on the list !!!!
Unfortunatly I consider that I am not skilled enough to lead a photowalk.
Scott,
You continue to crack me up! What a great Q & A. I still wish I could get on what you take to have all the energy … Do you sleep?
Hopefully, someone in Denver/Parker Colorado will sign up as a leader. I don’t have the experience in photography or I would sign up to lead.
Take care and again, thanks for all you do for us!
Dennis
LOL!
Scott you are to much! I love the last part of this post…I can’t wait for the photo walk I am still getting some people round up for it in Bahamas. Found my location and I feel as if it will be a great one:)

Hi Scott,
I just noticed that “Manila, (Philippines)” is currently under “North America” instead of “Asia” – thought I would mention it.
Man, I wish I could make it down to Florida, but it’s a little too much of a drive from Atlanta. My wife would kill me for driving 9 hours each way for a 2 hour photo walk (price of gas being what it is). Anyway, I’m looking forward to the day, and hoping someone here in Atlanta will lead! I’m ready to sign-up!
Wow! I just found out that NAPP’s own Executive Director, Larry Becker, is hosting a PhotoWalk in Lakeland, Florida. And I’m shocked that only 4 people are signed up so far!! It’s sure to be one of the best possible experiences in all of PhotoWalk history. I mean… hey, it’s Larry Becker. C’mon! It’ll be just great!! It’s Larry. It’s Lakeland. – Why would people go anywhere else (unless Larry’s PhotoWalk is booked solid).
Say… wasn’t Larry even one of those guys in the background of your PhotoWalk demo video? He’s sure to be an expert. I’m signing up for that one right away!! Go Larry!!!
If I was in Florida, Larry, I’d be there shooting right there next to you. However, I’m in SW Ohio so I’m signed up for the Cinci photowalk. Confirmed and everything!
Scott,
No one can deliver a Q&A and provide so much entertainment like you do. And Larry is no slouch either in his commenting skills
Scott:
It seems the Northeast is terribly underrepresented. There is only one NYC walk listed, and it is full. I am not sure of other areas or cities, but I would think there has to be more people interested in NYC and surrounding areas to make a walk feasible. I am in Poughkeepsie, about 1 1/2 hours north and can get to NYC. We have the Hudson River here, but a 2 hour walk around Poughkeepsie or Beacon does not sound like there would be enough interest here. Can you see to add more NYC locations?
Thanks
Bill Bogle, Jr.
Hello Scott,
Thank you for putting this event together. I signed up to be a leader of Columbia, SC but I didn’t get an automated email to activate the regristration. I tried to sign up again and I get this “The email address cesarmsi@aol.com is already in use, as either a participant, or a leader.” Can you please help me??
Should I wait a few more days??
Thank you.
Cesar
hello Scott !
I wonder if there is a last date to become a leader ? I just want to motive as much possible body here in Geneva before add myself to the list !
Thanks
Fred
Scott;
Is your new Lightroom 2 book based on the last Beta copy or the new final Lightroom 2 version?
Hi Scott,
Looking forward to the event! Would like it if our group leader – in NYC – updated us about developments instead of us having to visit the page. Contact info of the leader would be nice.
thanks,
Emon
Hi John:
My book is based on the final shipping version.
-Scott
Hi Emon
We’ll be sending you updates from the WW PhotoWalk Team on your walk, and I imagine your walk leader probably will as well (at least if they have something significant to report).
-Scott
Hey Scott,
I signed up for the photo walk with your buddy Vanelli in our hometown of Melbourne and now I noticed that it is gone from the list of cities. What gives? Has it been dropped? If it has, I’m driving across the state to Dunedin and tagging along with you. Consider yourself warned!
Cheers,
Karl-Franz

Hey Scott my sign in list is almost full. We might have a lot more than 50 people in our group.
I just worte a post to my blog http://paulopics.com/blog/2008/07/31/photowalk-fort-lauderdale-miami-palm-beaches/ , talking about the event, talking about your book, and showing some photo samples of the area where we are going to be doing the PHOTOWALK.
Paulo Jordao
I’m just glad you’re restricting yourself to confiscating our cameras only. Leaving the lenses behind is a kind act!
Scott, love your great sense of humor! I look forward to your bright comments every morning.
Hopefully this will be the first of many Kelby photowalks. Unfortunately, I will need to catch the next Worldwide photowalk. I will be on assignment on a Motorcycle event in Galena Illinois.
Keep up the good work.
Glenn
Scott,
I’m sorry to bug you about this here but is there some where to send an update for my application to be a photo walk leader? By that I mean when I signed up to host the site was still having problems so I couldn’t submit the photo and I had some background to add (leadership skill stuff… LOL). I have talked to several photographers in the Des Moines/Iowa area and I think there could be a great turn out.
Thank you for your time
Hi Scott!
Are there any german Cities in the waiting list yet?
Greetings
Mirko
Mr. Kelby
I filled out for the Walk in NY when it was only 6 people there but had not gotten a confirmation and now it’s full. What do I do.
Chad Pennington
Hey Emon,
Sorry the information has been a little bit slow on the NYC walk, but with the webteam bogged down, they haven’t been able to provide me with my login to the page yet. Scott actually had to personally update the page for me to get some infornation on there. (Yep that’s right, Scott personally did it. I can’t imagine how he does it!).
So what I would recommend is to check back sometime next week. By then we should have things pretty much set, but for sure the general location is going to be Chinatown, Little Italy and Nolita. I am still trying to decide the time as 10AM to 12 Noon will be less crowded, but late afternoon early evening gives better light and more of a party atmosphere afterwards.
Thanks for the enthusiasm, that is going to make our walk even better.
Hey Scott!
Looking forward to being part of the PhotoWalk in Tucson!
I might even try to put together a segment on our CBS Affiliate on
Taking better pics during the walk!
Regards,
Andy
I get to go shoot with with David Ziser…for free! Sounds too good to be true. Thanks for putting this together Scott.
Wonderful energy surrounding this release event. I’m excited.
I’m also hopeful to see a list of the pending cities to see if someone in my area will possibly be leading one!
Thanks again!
-Cody
So if you break into my house and take my camera… I can claim that on insurance and get a new D300. Yup, I’m good with that.
My address is…
Thanks for the FAQ’s it answered a few of mine!
I would love a Photowalk somewhere in the Phoenix/Scottsdale, AZ area. I am not qualified to be the leader, but it definitely sounds like a great day. Except for the heat, but maybe we could end at an ice cream place! ;o)
Scott,
Anyone sign up to be a leader anywhere in NC? I would to lead a group, but being very much an amateur photographer I am really not qualified.
I hope someone steps up in the NC area.
-S
I’m signed up and soooo excited for this! I’m glad I’m able to do the walk and participate, even though I can’t enter the contest. I’d still love to share my images though … can we post them to the Flickr group but not actually enter the contest, maybe add something to the photo’s description?
Thanks again for setting all of this up
Hi Scott,
Has anyone in Copenhagen Denmark signed up to be a leader yet? I would love to join but there isn’t any group here and I am not qualified to be a leader. I’ve already posted a topic about it in a couple of local Flickr groups but no one responded. Oh well, good luck to all the participants and have a great day!
Anyone know if there’ll be a Seattle one?
I just checked the cities site again (I’ve already signed up, but I like checking it) and I see there is now a Columbus, Ohio photowalk along with the Westerville one. Both are getting led by Mr. Cuerdon.
Is this another Revell-esque glitch or are there going to be 2 Columbus area photowalks?
I just wanted to address all those comments from folks that are looking for photowalks in their cities but don’t want to lead one because they don’t feel that they are experienced enough to do so. Here’s the deal, being a leader doesn’t mean you have to teach anything, it just means you have to put in some initial legwork to plan a route, meet everyone, and then shoot the starter’s pistol. If you know how to walk and know of a cool site that is pedestrian friendly with a decent cafe or restaurant, then you just might be qualified. A little enthusiasm and a loud voice go a long way towards leading a successful walk.
Jeff
Hey Scott.can ya knock up Michael Reichmann or Jeff Schewe of Luminous Landscape fame up here in Toronto to head up a Toronto group. I don’t see our city listed yet.
Scott –
Just wanted to thank you for choosing me as the city leader for Dallas. It will be great to be part of such a fun event before going to Photoshop World in Vegas.
- A.J.
Hi Scott and Alessandro,
Thanks for the responses and the updates. You guys are the best! This is gonna be one sweet event!
best,
Emon
