First, thanks to everyone who commented on my “accidental guest blog” yesterday. It was nice to see that I’m not the only one who has experienced it, and I’m not the only one it drives crazy.
Now, onto the news:
- We’re just TWO days away from my Worldwide Photo Walk, and as I write this we have 7,297 people signed up to walk on Saturday. I am just blown away!!! Hey—it’s not too late to join us (here’s the link to see if there’s a city hosting a walk near you). Hope you can make it!
- On a related note; participants who are walking in San Jose, California probably don’t realize it, but their walk leader, Frederick Johnson, just happens to be Adobe’s Lighroom Sr. Product Marketing Manager – Professional Photography (he’s also the guy who ponied up the 10 copies of Lightroom for runners up, and the full Creative Suite for the Grand Prize!). If you’re signed up for that walk—make sure you high-five Frederick for me!
- I’ve had a number of questions relating to a post I did last week about shooting tethered, and the question is; what is that stand you’re using for your laptop on location? I actually use two stands:
- When I want to go really light, I use an incredibly portable laptop stand Larry Becker turned me on to from the SkyMall catalog (the one you find in the seatback pocket on airplanes). It’s called the Lizell QuickStand Workstation Plus, which I found at Skymall.com for $139.
- The other is a heavy duty Bogen Double-Head Support Arm with a Gitzo G065 13×15.5-Inch laptop platform attached. I learned about this dynamic duo from Joe McNally, and though it’s not really heavy, it is heavy duty (but it is a lot larger to carry around). However, it’s built so your laptop sits on one side of the arm, and you can put a ballhead on the other end to hold your camera. Here’s the link to the Double-Head support, and Here’s the link to the Platform at B&H Photo.
- On Tuesday I showed how one of our London Leaders got some nice radio play for his PhotoWalk on BBC radio. Well, one of our leaders in Hawaii, my friend Jo Evans, got the write-up you see above in the local Hawaii island newspaper. You guys are doing a great job of spreading the word!!! (No wonder we have more than 7,000 walkers!). Way to go, Jo!
- Every single week we launch one or more new online training courses at KelbyTraining.com, and last week we released two classes: (1) Digital Arsenal from NAPP’s Executive Director Larry Becker, which is essentially a class that teaches you how to deal with the most common digital photography problems in Photoshop, (link), and (2) The Business Side of Photography, from well-known photographer, author and instructor Rick Sammon (link). This week, we just released “Photographing Florida Birds” with legendary wildlife photographer Moose Peterson (link).
- Lastly, I did an interview with my Book Publisher, Nancy Aldrich-Ruenzel (at Peachpit Press) about my new book, “The Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers“ and we talked about this weekend’s Worldwide Photowalk, and some other stuff. The interview is up online now, and you can listen right here.
That’s it for today, gang. I’ll be back tomorrow with a weekend wrap-up, and some last words about the PhotoWalk. I can’t wait!!!!

About the Photo Walk,
I have a bone to pick about this photo walk, I live in Calgary Alberta, one of Canada’s most prosperous Cities, and well known. Yet we do not have a photo walk planned here on Saturday. One cannot say it has anything to do with not having anyone asking to be leader because I myself was rejected by whomever does the picking for the group leader. Calgary is a city of millions so I find it hard to believe that I am the only one to apply. I would like to know the reason for this. Has there been some strange reason that no new cities have appeared on the website in the last 4 days, was there some sort of magical cut off number and if so why?
Thank you so much for the video by Moose Peterson. It’s fantastic. I learned a lot. He really is an amazing nature photographer and a very skilled teacher. And very funny, too!
And I blame you and Moose for me already planning to loose many, many Euros for a trip to Florida next year
The others videos are great, too. Kelbytraining is really amazing.
Totally off topic, but just wanted to let you know that a photography course (studio Art 370 – Photography I) at Michigan State University is using your The Photoshop® CS3 Book for Digital Photographers as their text book. I just thought that was neat and thought I would share the news.
Looking forward to the Photowalk this weekend, and I am really looking forward to meeting Terry White.
I was excited for this… Until I found out that I wasn’t invited to the party. Along with my buddies Wyoming, Kansas, NJ and Delaware we’ll have to sit back and watch you guys have fun. Hope next time ND can be considered.
Anybody from Wyoming, Kansas, NJ or Delaware want to do a photowalk Sat with the Dakota Kid?
No hard feelings, I could have driven 4 hours to Minneapolis or Sioux Falls; but sure would have been fun in my own hometown.
Are there any plans for a sequel walk?
About your online classes: at one time the list of classes was organized by software. Could this feature be added again?
Thanks.
Hey Scott,
I got the “stuff” from b&h to hang my laptop and the pole thing…
What I can’t find is a cord (10 ft. or more) that will connect to my PC (windows) and my D300? any help here
Thanks
Ken
Hi Scott:
Photowalk is great! I just wanted to alert you to an incident that happened here in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada recently. Apparently a few days ago while police were tasering a suspect, a passerby was trying to snap some shots of the incident. However, he was apprehended by the police and handcuffed and his memory card was taken away. He was even taken to the station and later released without any chrages. Here is the link and video.

I thought you may want to share this with your readers.
Anyway, keep up the great work and I love your books and site!
I am a newbie, so I wouldn’t be qualified to lead a PhotoWalk, but it would sure be great to have one in Tallahassee next time. This year we are just going to be trying to keep our heads above water … literally dependent upon what TS Fay does next – might be some great photos in it though!
Thanks heaps for what you and all your great colleagues do, I learn something new every day!

I just wanted to float the idea of each city combining the images from the photowalks into photosynths. Microsoft released the photosynth software today. There is a great video that demonstrates the basic idea: http://blip.tv/file/1190926/ The summary is that photosynth combines many photos into a 3d environment so that you can see how views are spatially related to each other. 50 photographers walking through a defined route taking pictures along the way should produce plenty of source material. I am excited to see how other people got a better picture than me by moving up or down a foot from where I took my photo or waiting a few minutes for something to move.
Yep I’m very excited about Sat.. I lead a mini one photowalk a month or so ago (BTW thanks to Jeff Revell’s site for the inspiration) and it was great fun,
@Daniel Francis… Well I live in NJ and we’ll having a bunch of photo-geeks walking around Camden, Trenton, Newark or even Atlantic City with a over 1k in camera gear strapped to them is well… easy pickins… like shootin fish in barrel… etc
Thanks Scott.. I’m amazed (daily) about the amount of time and devotion you have.. You rock.. I can’t dedicate that much time to being lazy…

Too bad, that I just back-out of the Photo-Walk in Seattle, because it asked me to sign-up & join the Google Croup, then sign-up for the Flickr web site, which I already has too many web accounts and and other accounts to remember them all, let alone the junk emails I will received.
Have fun without me you guys/gals.
Hey Scott,
My neighborhood in Melbourne got dumped with 25+ inches of rain yesterday compliments of Fay. I’m signed up to do the Photowalk with your buddy Vanelli in Cocoa Village this weekend. Has he mentioned to you whether we will need to bring our SCUBA gear?
Cheers,
Karl-Franz

Hi Scott,
In Puerto Rico there isn’t going to be a photowalk but i will do one of my own. Right now i have a Coqui in my window singing away, i’m going to try to get a picture of it and post it somewhere…. i’ll keep you posted.
By the way Saturday i will be having one in my neighborhood, it will be lead by me, and i’ll be the only one taking pictures, but that’s ok… im kindof shy anyway, ……..
@martha torres What a great idea–to do your own Photowalk! Or even ask a friend along. Post your results on Flickr–I’d love to see them.
Janine
People here in South Florida (Fort Lauderdale Photowalk) are very excited with this Photowalk. I just got two of my articles about Photowalk published at Ezinearticles.com. Check the blog here: http://www.paulopics.com/blog
I guess you noticed that the “REAL” NAPP didn’t get credit in the article!
Looking forward to tomorrow…
