It’s Finally Here—-The PhotoWalk is Tomorrow! :)

Just one more day to the history-making Worldwide PhotoWalk, and I am just totally excited!!! We now have nearly 8,000 people signed up for the walk, and we’re working hard to help our leaders make the most of their walks.
My Gear for the Walk
I’ve had a few questions about what equipment I’ll be taking for my walk, and I thought I go ahead and answer it here.
For my walk (in Dunedin, Florida), I’m taking my Nikon D300 with just one lens; my 18-200mm VR f/3.5-5.6 lens. The reason I’m taking my D300 (rather than my D3 or D700) is because I just want to use one lightweight lens the whole time, that gives me both wide angle, portrait, and a long zoom in one. If I use that lens on the D700 or D3, it will crop my image down to 5-megapixels. My dream is that Nikon would come out with a 18-200mm VR f/4 FX format lens, so then I would take my D700 or D3, but until that dream comes true (and I’m not sure it will any soon), I’m just travelin’ light.
The Two Most Important Rules For Tomorrow:
(1) The walk is for fun. It’s for meeting other photographers in your area and having fun. That’s it. The contest is just for fun, too, so don’t take any of this too seriously. It’s a social event—not a cut-throat competition, so keep smiling and let’s enjoy our time together.
(2) There’s absolutely no whining. If you get the restaurant and can’t find a seat—-you can’t whine. If it rains on your PhotoWalk—resist the urge to whine (your leader has a back-up plan). If someone steals your shot—don’t whine. Just don’t whine in general. Just have fun. If you come across a situation where you really, really want to whine, refer to rule one. Also, there’s no whining about not being able to whine.
Be A Good Walker
Most of the cities have lots of walkers, so you’re probably going to wind up in some crowded situations (just imagine 50 photographers all walking down a single sidewalk). Be patient. Be really courteous to other walkers, and to anyone you meet during the walk. Be respectful. If someone you see on your walk doesn’t want you to shoot them, don’t. Be nice to your city’s walk leader. Believe me, it’s more work than you’d imagine, and they have really been working hard to make their walks a success for you (I’m really impressed with how involved and enthusiastic the walk leaders have been).
You’ll Be Surrounded By Potential New Friends
We’re all in this together, and there’s no easier place to make new friends than a PhotoWalk. You can just walk up to anybody there and say, “So, what kind of stuff do usually shoot?” or “How do you like that camera” (or lens, or camera bag, or filter, or whatever?), and instantly you’ve got a conversation going. This is really what makes these PhotoWalks special. You’re out there sharing a couple of hours with a bunch of people who are just like you—wanting to meet other photographers. If not, they wouldn’t have signed up to be part of the group (they could just walk that same route all by themselves on any given day). Take the initiative. Extend a hand, or a warm smile. You’re among friends.
Another Cool Prize:
MPIX.com (the photo lab Matt, Dave and I use exclusively), has thrown in another very cool prize for our 10 Runner’s Up; they will create a beautiful 20″x30″ poster-sized print for each winner of their winning runner’s up image. My thanks for MPIX.com for taking it up a big notch!
A Word of Thanks
I’m just so grateful to all the leaders around the world who have come together to do something really special, and just want to give my most sincere and heartfelt thanks to them for being willing to organize a walk for their city. Also, thanks to everyone who is participating, and to those taking the plunge to try something new. I think you’re going to have a surprisingly rewarding experience.
Also, I want to thank the walk’s sponsors; Peachpit Press, Adobe Systems, MPIX, PhotoWalkPro.com, Wacom, Epson, B&H Photo, and CDW. We couldn’t have done it without you.
Let’s Do It!
Charge your batteries! Format your Memory Cards! Clean Your Lens! Blah, blah, blah, etc. Everybody, have a safe, fun walk and I hope you get some amazing photos!
All my best,
-Scott

Ooooohhhh … but I waaaaannnnnnttttt to whine! (Sorry, it’s the first week of school, and I just HAD to get it out of my system!)
Looking forward to the walk in Naples, Florida, tomorrow!
Thanks, Scott, for this great idea. You know … you just plain ROCK!
Hello, World!!! How AMAZING is this?!
Love the idea of expanding GLOBAL involvement especially after viewing the Beijing XXI Olympics during the last two weeks. Can NOT even imagine the vast INCREDIBLE athletic feats NOT captured by a fellow artist!
Glad to have discovered Scott’s blog tonight as I was thinking about skipping the Saturday evening event due to knee surgery last month. I even have a new fish eye lens needing much attention.
Our walk will be in the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta, GA. Would love to chat w/ a fellow photographer; especially from DUBLIN as my first trip to IRELAND occurs September 2008!
Best of unique perspectives (as well as battery life & weather) to us all!
Cheers!
Hi every one!!
I’m excited that I can’t wait more for my very first photowalk.
Seems that would be a very good day here in Portugal, hope so..

Well, I’m excited too, Scott. Except that I found out that I’m not entered. I must admit that I signed up just at the start when your web site was totally screwed up. Anyway, I WILL be joining the San Francisco Walk #1 and have a good time but, apparently, I won’t be able to post to the group. Looking forward, though.
WOW! this is sooooo coooool! everyone around the world doing the same stuff … and thanks for choosing Penang, Malaysia for one of your destinations. Will be looking forward to the walk. i love the “no whining” part of the rule!!!! hahaahah. Have a great laugh n time, everyone! regards, teetoo.
Can’t wait to go on the photowalk in White River Junction. Traveled here over the ocean for this!
Looking forward to start our photowalk in 7 hrs time in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia…
I am excited about this afternoon’s walk in Bangkok - but it IS the rainy season here at the moment and it loves to rain at that time. Could get some interesting shots if there is a downpour!
Great day tomorrow! I am anxious! Great Idea!
I hope to find good friends and take good pictures!

Hi all,
Let’s rock the world!
Hi Folks,
Being located where we are I guess our Walk was the first in the world.
It was good fun with great people.

You guys are so behind. We already finished our photowalk here in Sydney and the sun has set. It went well. We did get harrassed but the two group members with me took the guys photo and told him where he could stick it.
The ordinance was no commercial photography. I had a tripod. The other two guys, whom he didn’t bother had pro cameras, but because I had a pro tripod he harrassed me. All he was going to do was tell me to move along which I was in the process of doing anyway. I think the long sticks of my tripod made him feel less of a man, if you know what I mean.
Enjoy your tardy photowalks, and I look forward to seeing some of the photos.
Photowalking in Portsmouth NH today! Beautiful here. Looking forward to it!
Wow! can’t wait.. im ready and charge! thank you so much Sir.Scott for bringing this up! for sure Dubai will Rock’N Roll! see’you all there!
Have a great walk to all of us…
Cheers!
John
I just want to say this is one of the best ideas you have had ever. I love that we are all participating in a world wide photo shoot with some of the best photoshop teachers, photographers and people of like interests. This could be the start of many more get to gathers world wide, l applaud you and the sponsors for this opportunity.
Wow, had a bunch of fun on Matt’s walk in Hyde Park - fortunately they police didn’t hassle my daughter and I, like the did Matt & some of the other walkers. Got some cool pix - what a great idea you had. Thanks - oh and Matt - if you read this it is K not C :-}
I am scheduled to go on the International Kelby Photo Walk tonight.
Scott wanted just a social gathering, but here in the Phoenix area, the leader decided to have training “huddles” along the way to teach various subject. There will be presentations at a restaurant afterward, too, with demos of Lightroom II and Corel Paint.
It got to be a little too high-ended for me. I started to feel intimidated when they talked about “Using Expodiscs and WhiBal cards for white balancing your shots — both during shooting and in post-processing”.
I wanted just a simple walk with other photogs - a social visit where we talked basics. I’m not looking for a 400 level course and people bragging on their great equipment.
And so, with 110 degrees and ozone warning expected, I am debating my participation. If I go, I may wander off by myself or with any other people in my class of limited knowledge and experience. I have an eye for shooting, but certainly not the technical savvy and the high-end hardware and software.
I had a blast on my photowalk, but never ended up meeting up with everyone at the end of the walk, had 2 much fun shooting and lost track of time and now i dont know where to post my images… i think most of us are in the clouds on that information… either way as an 18 year old Student from Dawson College, down here in canada “eh” i think we all are very impressed in the idea and i think it will turn out perfectly… might even want to build some-sort of top 100 images, make it a book? or just display it all over the world… im sure are school would jump at that opportunity!

This is such a great idea and I’m really looking forward to getting out there and enjoying the evening taking photos and meeting new photographers. It would be nice to win a prize but I signed up initially without even knowing it was a competition just excited to go out for a shoot.
Thanks for putting it together in my city!

Well we just got back from dinner after the Las Vegas PhotoWalk and must say it was a most enjoyable event. Lots of great people and lots of great photo-ops. I live in Las Vegas and I must say we have a very picturesque city. We concentrated on the Fremont Street Experience in old Downtown Las Vegas and can’t wait to see the images captured by all my friends. Count me in if you do this again - I had a blast!

Scott, It would be great to be able to purchase a T-Shirt from the event. Good publicity with a bunch of photographers touting your site. Think abou it….
Really wanted to be part of it in Kansas City. On the way there received email that is was postponed and turned around. They went ahead with it anyway. Would have been nice to have a chance to participate.
OK, so I went and had a GREAT time (in the heat). I’m VERY happy with how my pics came out. Take a look and comment if you want: http://www.flickr.com/photos/20166606@N07/
Scott, just want you to know that Dave Cuerdon was an outstanding leader and organizer!
One small quibble. He said we might give you a call from the restaurant after the walk. I’m sure you weren’t busy!

Dear Mr. Kelby,
It was a great day on 23rd of August when I joined the amazing World Wide Photo Walk in Islamabad, Pakistan. I had a great fun and enjoyed photo shooting with my group members and leader Mr. Awais Yaqub.
I came to know that by mistake I was not registered in Islamabad, but I am registered somewhere else I don’t know how…. but I guess it could be my mistake while registering myself for this wounderful walk.
I would like to request you if you can move my registeration to Islamabad group at:

Might I suggest for the next walk we include the smaller cities as well. I can think of several small Indiana towns I have spent time in in my life that would have so much photo potential. I am after all a southern Indiana boy!
Thanks a very much for arrange this Photo walk. This is great experience in my life I am a not photographer. But I like very much photography of wild photography. And this is my 1st experience with some Best photographer. And this had done by Photo walk.
Thanks Very much
