It’s Finally Here—-The PhotoWalk is Tomorrow! :)

Just one more day to the history-making Worldwide PhotoWalk, and I am just totally excited!!! We now have nearly 8,000 people signed up for the walk, and we’re working hard to help our leaders make the most of their walks.
My Gear for the Walk
I’ve had a few questions about what equipment I’ll be taking for my walk, and I thought I go ahead and answer it here.
For my walk (in Dunedin, Florida), I’m taking my Nikon D300 with just one lens; my 18-200mm VR f/3.5-5.6 lens. The reason I’m taking my D300 (rather than my D3 or D700) is because I just want to use one lightweight lens the whole time, that gives me both wide angle, portrait, and a long zoom in one. If I use that lens on the D700 or D3, it will crop my image down to 5-megapixels. My dream is that Nikon would come out with a 18-200mm VR f/4 FX format lens, so then I would take my D700 or D3, but until that dream comes true (and I’m not sure it will any soon), I’m just travelin’ light.
The Two Most Important Rules For Tomorrow:
(1) The walk is for fun. It’s for meeting other photographers in your area and having fun. That’s it. The contest is just for fun, too, so don’t take any of this too seriously. It’s a social event—not a cut-throat competition, so keep smiling and let’s enjoy our time together.
(2) There’s absolutely no whining. If you get the restaurant and can’t find a seat—-you can’t whine. If it rains on your PhotoWalk—resist the urge to whine (your leader has a back-up plan). If someone steals your shot—don’t whine. Just don’t whine in general. Just have fun. If you come across a situation where you really, really want to whine, refer to rule one. Also, there’s no whining about not being able to whine.
Be A Good Walker
Most of the cities have lots of walkers, so you’re probably going to wind up in some crowded situations (just imagine 50 photographers all walking down a single sidewalk). Be patient. Be really courteous to other walkers, and to anyone you meet during the walk. Be respectful. If someone you see on your walk doesn’t want you to shoot them, don’t. Be nice to your city’s walk leader. Believe me, it’s more work than you’d imagine, and they have really been working hard to make their walks a success for you (I’m really impressed with how involved and enthusiastic the walk leaders have been).
You’ll Be Surrounded By Potential New Friends
We’re all in this together, and there’s no easier place to make new friends than a PhotoWalk. You can just walk up to anybody there and say, “So, what kind of stuff do usually shoot?” or “How do you like that camera” (or lens, or camera bag, or filter, or whatever?), and instantly you’ve got a conversation going. This is really what makes these PhotoWalks special. You’re out there sharing a couple of hours with a bunch of people who are just like you—wanting to meet other photographers. If not, they wouldn’t have signed up to be part of the group (they could just walk that same route all by themselves on any given day). Take the initiative. Extend a hand, or a warm smile. You’re among friends.
Another Cool Prize:
MPIX.com (the photo lab Matt, Dave and I use exclusively), has thrown in another very cool prize for our 10 Runner’s Up; they will create a beautiful 20″x30″ poster-sized print for each winner of their winning runner’s up image. My thanks for MPIX.com for taking it up a big notch!
A Word of Thanks
I’m just so grateful to all the leaders around the world who have come together to do something really special, and just want to give my most sincere and heartfelt thanks to them for being willing to organize a walk for their city. Also, thanks to everyone who is participating, and to those taking the plunge to try something new. I think you’re going to have a surprisingly rewarding experience.
Also, I want to thank the walk’s sponsors; Peachpit Press, Adobe Systems, MPIX, PhotoWalkPro.com, Wacom, Epson, B&H Photo, and CDW. We couldn’t have done it without you.
Let’s Do It!
Charge your batteries! Format your Memory Cards! Clean Your Lens! Blah, blah, blah, etc. Everybody, have a safe, fun walk and I hope you get some amazing photos!
All my best,
-Scott

Hi Scott,
I was really looking forward to participating in the Photo Walk in Tucson on Saturday.
Unfortunately, a dear man passed away this last week and I have decided to attend services for him instead. It also happens that the family has me asked me to photograph the reception at their home after the services.
While I don’t regret my choice pay my last respects and be the photographer for the family, I’m still very sorry to be missing the Photo Walk.
Best to you,
Daniel
Looking forward to the Tempe (Phoenix) Arizona Walk. I am totally amateur and will only have a Canon Powershot S5 IS with me. My biggest fear is snobbery from the pros and their powerful cameras and expensive tools and a vocabulary beyond my grasp, but I shall not whine. I’m going to see what I can see, to see what they seem to see, to get ideas, and to have FUN… even if it will be 110 degrees out when we start with an Ozone alert in place. (Whoops! I’m not whining!)
Like everyone else, I’m excited to participate in the photo walk. See you in Philadelphia (Old Town)!
I for 1 am really excited about my first PhotoWalk. I love the area we’re going to be touring. Lived here most of my life and still hadn’t taken the time to really walk through and admire this historic area of my city.
Hey There ! This came out at 4:30am local time ON THE DAY. It’s 5:15 am now, and for us the walk starts in around 3hrs at 9am Sydney (Australia !) time.
Really looking forward to a great day, meeting a bunch of new mates, and having some fun in the (and I’m NOT whining ) light rain that we have here.
Also looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with and posts.
Have a great Walk everyone.
Hi, Scott!
I’m sure it will be a great day and interesting met up. We have a local group in Buenos Aires (flickr members are always welcome to safariBA) and we do practice of photo activity like that.
Thanks for the opportunity to be a part of biggest world photo walk =)
Regards,
Slaff

Mick
I’m very excited about taking some awesome pictures during the photowalk!
Hi!
We’ll have a good time tomorrow in Madrid!!!!!
Scott, thank you very much for this event.
I was really looking forward to this, batteries charged, cards ready, camera cleaned (Canon 20D & SIgma 28-300) and my leader (Gold Coast, Qld, Australia) has pulled out. OH, she says, you can join the Brisbane one.
Well for me that’s 120+kms (each way) and I just not an option. I was hoping to meet some possible new photo friends.
I would have led one but someone already had our area – so annoying. And I can’t participate in the prize opportunites (which was a nice aspect).
Oh well, I’ll go take some surf photos anyway. Can I be put ont he ealry noticiation list for next time so I can form a group and leaad myself, please?
Today, August 22, is 100th birthday of the greatest photowalker ever, Henri Cartier Bresson.(He died in 2004) “It takes a pair of shoes for every good picture”. So I took a Leica M4 and some rolls of Tri-X and walked around in my city, Gothenburg, today. I don´t know if I took any good pitures. But it felt good to do this just to remember HCB.
Hi to everyone from Philadelphia!
I’m really excited to meet up with our group tomorrow (or in Sydney, TODAY!), meeting others with the same passion and to see everyone’s posts.
Thanks Scott for the awesome idea! I second the thought of a national holiday…
Donna
Hola Scott,
from Bogotá-Colombia, a realy beginer, I am very happy of tomorow!
I Wish everybody a lot of fun!!!!
This will be a great event.
Thank you for this wonderful event – the 1st world wide photo walk. Phoenix/Tempe, Arizona will be hot and who know with the monsoons what the event will have in store for us participating tomorrow.
To John Haldane do not look at the who has what regarding equipment – some of the great shoots have been done with the cheapest equipment – it is all for the art and joy of photography. Everyone see the world differently and it really is an art, craft and skill of the eye to see and capturing it, that is incredible part along with sharing it with others. Like all of us will be doing tomorrow and for some already it is the 23rd. I can not wait – its like your favorite holiday out of season. Enjoy
We’ll be in Mt. Dora, FL tomorrow! Fay or no Fay, we’ll be there. Should be a fabulous time despite rain and wind – but then again, it could be VERY interesting for photography.
When and where will the resulting photos be posted? This should be one awesome presentation.
And you Scott are the awesome-est! Thanks for this great opportunity.
REady for tomorrow.,..
Can’t wait to see 43 Ptotographers all in one place (with their equipment in hand). It should be a great day and event.
New Orleans shoot starts in early tomorrow morning.
Checking out and cleaning my camera and equipment.
See you’ll then.
Good luck to all fellow walkers! Wouldn’t it be great to see a montage of all the groups as they start all over the world in the various time zones? I plan to make sure we have a group photo taken during our walk in Oakland, Maryland and hope all the groups do as well. Can’t wait! PS- Can Flickr hold all those photos?
I’m really excited about this photo walk. it will be nice to take time off from shooting to pay the bills and just shoot for fun.
Thanks for organizing this one.
Orita
Greeting Scott,
I will be a Laguna Beach Walker tomorrow!! Looking so forward to making new friends and Learning from those who know so much more than me. Thanks for organizing a great event.
Hi Scott,
I just wanted to say “THANK YOU” for putting this event together. It’s a great idea and I hope you have these events a lot more often. By the way, I love your Digital Photography books and share them with everyone I know.
Hi Scott:
If anyone is excited about this it is me. I now know there are 5 other members of NAPP that live here in Costa Rica. I have been solo for so long I won’t know how to act.
My hat’s off to you for even thinking of something like this let alone organizing it! You are amazing! Love all of your books that have taught me so much because that is what I have relied on here for the small amount of knowledge that I have acquired so far.
For sure I will be having a great time tomorrow come rain or come shine!
Happy Walking to everyone, Mary Ellen
Everybody,
Look both ways when crossing the street, don’t steal anybody else’s camera/lenses, Get a picture from a weird angle of view, Ask for a few potraits from your group, Take a group shot overall, label it 1st Annual Kelby Photowalk 2008.
And of course: Have Fun!
A few good quotes:

I never question what to do, it tells me what to do. The photographs make themselves with my help. ~Ruth Bernhard
You’ve got to push yourself harder. You’ve got to start looking for pictures nobody else could take.
You’ve got to take the tools you have and probe deeper.”
– William Albert Allard (National Geographic Photographer)
“A good photographer shoots where the picture is. A great photographer shoots where the picture is going to be.” -Wayne Gretzky/Daniel Watkins
Have a great weekend everybody!

Wow this thing has gone from a cool idea to a world wide success even before it has started, happy to be a part of history making.

I’ve been trying to be in a photowalk since March, it hadn’t work until now, and I will be part of only the best and biggest one!!! WOW I’m really happy!!!
Kudos to Scott for the idea and hard work together with all leaders!!
Let’s all have lots of fun!

Eladio
Thanks for this event…from beautiful Lake Tahoe where two events are taking place (wish I could walk both.)
Wow, this event has turned HUGE! Here in Brisbane, Australia it is a beautiful fine “winter” morning. I’m really looking forward to meeting the others who have chosen to walk around the city and capture some of what it is like to live in this fantastic city.
Thanks Scott for coming up with this idea.
Cheers from Brisbane, Australia!
I’m looking forward to joining everyone in Philadelphia tomorrow morning, where I’ll be shooting Olde City with new eyes. And seeing all the other city names on this blog makes me want to do a Photowalk in another city this time next year, maybe one that’s about a dozen time zones away . . .
Have fun, everyone!
Looking forward to the photowalk in Bucharest tomorrow, even though we’re just 25 people, short of 50%
We are going to have a great sunny day ahead and I’m sure it’s going to be lots of fun, so get ready for some sweaty 38 degrees C (100.4 F) pictures
I’m so excited about meeting others that share my passion for photography and looking forward to the great collaborations and networking opportunities that can come out of this event in Phoenix tomorrow.
Good luck everyone! Looking forward to meeting all of you.
I cannot wait for the Photo Walk in Melbourne tomorrow. It will be interesting to see what Vanelli has waiting for us.
By the way, he asked that I put together a quick tutorial showing people how to use Flickr for those in the Melbourne group who have never used it before. I thought it might be beneficial to all the new Flickr users in all the groups…

Make photos, not war
… lets have a nice day tomorow..
I’m looking forward to the walk in Houston, rain or shine. Photowalking is actually the best way to describe 95% of my photography so it will be fun to see a whole group of people out doing what I love to do. Thanks for coming up with this great idea Scott to spread it worldwide.
Scott: I am a little puzzled by your choice of the D300 over the D700/D3 given the latter’s superior performance at high ISO levels and this will be, at least in part, an evening shoot. I understand the attraction of the 18-200mm VR (have one myself and at f/8-f/11 it is a remarkable optical performer) but I’ve chosen the D700 + 24-70mm f/2.8 as my walkaround package for Saturday night. And the 24-70mm is as wide on the D700 as the 18-200mm on the D300. I may even throw the 50mm f/1.4 in a pocket and really see how the new sensors perform in low light levels. Decisions, decisions.
I’m really looking forward to the walk in Oslo, Norway tomorrow! The forecast is looking good and I think our leader has done a good job choosing a route full of possibilities. In addition he has managed to avoid overcrowding the pavements of Oslo with 50 enthusiasts + my husband (whom I’m bringing as an assistant..;) We’ll not be hugging any seats in the restaurant afterwards ‘caus we’re leaving for a Mediterranean cruise early Sunday morning and need to pack…
My remedy against rain is by the way to bring my Olympus E-3 and 12-60 SWD + a couple of others, which my husband will carry alongside my rain poncho.
I’m also hoping for some statistics of some kind, but I guess that requires that all of us provide the data and someone collects and organise them… Cold be quite a job I imagine…
Well, I wish all of you a creative photowalk where ever you walk in the world, and remember there is no such thing as bad photo weather; it’s just weather..!
1st Comment and the 101st Comment by myself.
Wow !
Greetings from Las Vegas to every one who will join with this great PhotoWalk.

CAN’T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am going to the PhotoWalk at the Santa Monica Pier, USA. I’m only 12 years old and looking very forward to it.
Excited on the walk this evening !
But the wheather over Penang here looks like going to heavy rain !
I don’t think a rain will stop the spirit of all the photograph lovers, don’t you !
Let’s rock !
Coney Island, Brooklyn NY, here I come!
I’m psyched! Thanks Scott, you’ve been a great inspiration to me.
