First, did you catch that “First Annual” up in the headline? Yeah, baby!!!! We had such a great response, and so many people asking about it, and we’ve already decided to make it an annual event. :)

But before I tell you what a blast I had with my own local photowalk, here are some excerpts from comments posted on my blog on Saturday:

  • We here in Sydney [Australia] finished our photo walk over 12 hours ago and it was a blast.
  • Just got back from leading my group in Fredericksburg, Virginia. An honor to be associated with this event. I had all levels of photographers, from Pro to casual shooter. What a great group of people and sincerely enjoyed their company!
  • I also finished my photowalk quite some time ago down here in Amsterdam. We absolutely had a blast.
  • We had a great time here in London. Let’s have another one next year… or next month… or better still, next week!
  • Hi Scott! I just got home from leading the Baltimore Photowalk and couldn’t have asked for a better morning. Everyone was amazing and things went perfectly.
  • Checking in from the Malmö, Sweden photowalk here: We had a blast! Unfortunately, it rained cats & dogs the whole time. Still, around half of the fifty or so bravely showed up and not one single person whined :-). It was really fun!
  • Great morning in Boston…the sun was a bit bright but couldn’t have asked for a more pleasant morning…The North End in Boston is a shooters dream.
  • We had great weather on our photowalk in northern Spain, Bilbao/Getxo. I think all of us enjoyed it to know others with the same hobby.
  • The weather was perfect and the shooters had fun and created some great pictures. I think everyone enjoyed being together. We all began as strangers and finished making new relationships and spending four enjoyable hours together.
  • Portugal’s Porto Photowalk was great. 30+ people showed up and everyone was very kind and willing to share their experiences and expectations.
  • I don’t know about the rest of the world but Vancouver BC Canada was… OUTSTANDING!!!
  • Ohhhhh, what a great day! The walk in Charlottesville, VA was a dream.
  • The photo walk I attended today was awesome in Fresno, CA. Met a lot of great people and the area we walked even had nice music playing.
  • I led the walk in Sioux Falls, SD. We had a very diverse group and I had a great time. Can’t wait to see the photos on the Flickr site.
  • I was on the Detroit Photowalk and I think everyone had a great time. I certainly did.
  • San Diego was good. Great people and a lot of great photo opportunities.
  • The Cincinnati, Ohio Walk was a blast. David Ziser chose a pretty good route (long but fun) ending at a great place to eat (the Guinness on tap hit the spot after the walk).
  • I still can’t believe there was so many photographers all over the world having such a good time shooting pictures! A truly historic moment in photography.
  • NYC Chinatown was AWESOME! Great job team lead Alessandro and thanks for an excellent day!
  • Great time in Boston and the weather was fabulous.
  • WOWWWWWoooo WWweeeee! What a great time we had here in Koloa, Kauai Hawaii. We had a wonderful bunch of people that wanted to shoot, no one really cared on the experience level, I was just like “Let go have some fun”.
  • I think a good time was had by all in Portland, Maine. I know I had fun!
  • Greetings from Sacramento! Diana and I had a great group, great weather and a steam engine huffing and puffing and rolling around in Old Sacramento. Fun, photos and conversations were plentiful.
  • Greetings from Chicago!! Our Michigan Avenue walk was awesome…I am so psyched!!
  • We finished the Penang, Malaysia walk about 12 hours ago. Went off with out a hitch and we all had a blast and made a lot of new friends. Can’t wait to do it again!
  • Just got home from the evening walk with Jeff Revell in Alexandria, VA. What a blast.
  • What a GREAT event. Met lots of new and interesting people. Had fun — got great shots - can wait to run them through Lightroom.
  • ‘Twas great…..woo hoo. I will definitely join more photo walks.
  • My two friends and I had a great time on ours in St. Charles Missouri. We look forward to participating in another soon.
  • We had a great time in Cedar Rapids, IA on our photowalk this morning and getting together for lunch afterward was the icing on the cake.
  • The Denver(Golden) one was awesome! Met a few fellow NAPP’ers, made some new friends and in general met what appears to be a really fun group of people.
  • This is Paulo Jordao (Worldwide Photowalk Leader - Fort Lauderdale, Florida)
What a great Photowalk we had here. We had 65 Photowalkers and I couldn’t believe what a great group.
  • We had a great photo walk yesterday and thanks to you Scott i get to meet lot of talented photographers from my city Dhaka, Bangladesh.
  • I was in the Greenville, South Carolina photo shoot and it was locally well planned and orchestrated as well.
  • This was the first time my husband and I had ever done any type of photowalk. The Cary, North Carolina walk was fantastic & the weather was perfect! The people were great and everyone seemed to have an amazing time. Thanks!
  • We had a BLAST at the Denver (Golden), Colorado walk. What a great bunch of people!
  • We had a nice Photowalk here in Hamburg, Germany. Even though the weather was a bit rainy but hey no whining, am I right? You made thousands of strangers worldwide come together, share their passion and have a great time.
  • We had a great walk in Jakarta. It was such a great day, and photographers are the greatest people to hang out with!!
  • Hola From Panama! We had a great photowalk too there was no sun (no rain) but who cares no whining here!
  • We had an great morning walk in Portsmouth New Hampshire. Our group leader Ron lead us on an interesting route. The weather was fantastic and we all had a great time.
  • Yesterday in Amsterdam was great! I never walked in that part of the city before and was able to make some nice photo’s.
  • Photowalk was a great one here in Bahamas.
  • We had a great time walking in Portland, OR. Laurie Excell did a great job with our route, and I got some rockin’ photos!
  • I was on Dan Ablans “Michigan Avenue” walk in Chicago. Dan did a really great job and meeting all these people was just fantastic.
  • Went on the photo walk in Ventura, California last night. Chris Pettit had it well organized and everyone I heard from really enjoyed it.
  • I got to go on Nasim Mansurov’s Boulder, Colorado walk. I had a great time meeting a bunch of other really talented photographers and learned a bunch without even realizing it.
  • Participated in the Victoria BC event. Got to meet some nice people, and learned some new tricks, just as I had hoped. I was amazed that I was even able to share some of my own miniscule knowledge.
  • Did the Chinatown, NYC walk and had a great time, met great people and learned a lot.

Besides those comments, I’ve gotten dozens of personal emails from participants and leaders around the world, and I’m just so grateful to everyone who joined in to create something really special, and really fun.

My PhotoWalk in Dunedin, Florida.
When I got there, about 30 minutes early, it was beautiful. Then about 10 minutes before the walk started, it starting pouring rain. Then, right at starting time, it was like somebody flipped a switch—the rain stopped for precisely two hours. When our walk was over, we sat down in the restaurant, and then the rain restarted. I just smiled. :)

OK, here are some ‘behind the scenes’ photos from my walk:

walk1sm1.jpg
When the rain came before my walk, we all ducked under this nearby Gazebo, but by starting time, it had cleared and off we went! (photo by RC).

_dsc9194.jpg

My good buddy RC came as a “Guest Walker” and here he is, outside my car, when it first started pouring. RC’s always prepared. (photo of RC).

Hitting downtown Dunedin (pron. Done-eed-in).

_dsc9240.jpg

RC “McNally” Giottos BridgeHome (his full name) is pretty dangerous with that SB-800. If only he had remembered batteries.

_dsc9313.jpg

Hey, no Chimpin’ during the walk.

_dsc9358.jpg

After the walk, we chilled out at “Sea Sea Riders” Key-West style restaurant. It was totally yummy, and there was enough of us that we pretty much had the whole place to ourselves.

walk2sm.jpg

Having lunch with some new friends at Sea Sea’s. (photo by RC’s and his flash).

_dsc9364.jpg

After my walk (and my NFL Fantasy Football Draft), I went to RC’s walk for a little while (he held his in downtown Clearwater, Florida). I met some great folks there, too.

_dsc9382.jpg

I ended the day by stopping by Rod Harlan’s Safety Harbor, Florida shoot. It was pouring rain when I got there too, and as luck would have it, Rod choose his meet-up starting point as a Gazebo in a park downtown.

_dsc9391.jpg

Rod admonishing me for taking his photo during his opening comments. I sprayed him with pepper spray just moments after this was taken. ;-)

Tomorrow, I hope to have a short video to post, taken during my PhotoWalk, to give you an idea of what it’s really like, but I can tell you this; we had an awful lot of fun—I met some really great people—I didn’t get a single shot worth a darn, but I sure saw some of my photowalkers who did great some great stuff!

Lots more to report tomorrow, so stay tuned. :)

    Congrats Scott.
    First annual - very good!

We had fun here in Brisbane, Queensland Australia. We’ve been a good gang of photographers, a good mix of both amateurs and pro’s.

    Cheers from Australia

I just love to see the photos of all the other photo walks around the globe.
They all have the same enthusiastic feel about them, exactly like the photowalk here in Amsterdam.

The thing I liked most was the fact that you didn’t feel like you were slowing people down, nobody would complain when you decided to take that shot just a few times extra. The joy of being together with like-minded people.

    Hi Scott,

I had a great time at the Worldwide Photo Walk. It was such a nice day meeting a nice group of photographers and shooting photographs along Hollywood Blvd. It definitely had to be one of the most fun locations. Thanks for putting together the event. Looking forward to next year.

Our group in Cincinnati had a lot of fun, and there are some Flickr conversations to prove it :) That was even after the 5-mile round trip walk that we did!

I think I can speak for just about all of us that we want to do this again next year.

We had a great event in Ocean Springs, MS too and I’m crazy enough to host the event next year.

Any chance of sliding the date closer to the autumnal equinox to have a better chance at temperate weather? Don’t forget about photographers in the antipodes.

Even though we did not get listed on the WWPW website, we still did ours here in North Dakota. 50 of us on bus left Minot after taking pictures for two hours, then went down to Bismarck and did two hours there, then went to Medora were we ended and had a pig and bison roast.

The bus drove back to Minot and I had a 42 inch TV hooked to my laptop were people put their best 10 photos on and we watched all the way back to Minot.

Scott, thanks for this wonderful opportunity you gave us. We completed an amazing Photo Walk in Seoul, the weather held for us and we were rewarded with an amazing sunset about 20 minutes before we finished.

Although we were only 8 in total, the upshot of it all is we decided to continue doing a Photo Walk every month from now on. Next year … we’ll be 50 !!!!!

Once again thanks Scott. It truly was an amazing day :-)

I’m delighted to hear this will be an annual event. Missed this one due to moving. I would have had to drive to Buffalo as Rochester wasn’t on the list. And it’s inspired me to look for a local group on meetup.com. When we get settled i\ll be looking into it.

Living in the mountains of Colorado has some advantages. Being remote is one of them. Unfortunately being 150 miles from the nearest photowalk is not one of them. So what did we do, a few buddies of mine and I did an ‘unofficial’ photowalk in Leadville and stumbled upon a classic Porche rally in the mining town of Leadville. The weather barely held out, but at least it didn’t snow. Hopefully next year we can be an official photowalk site in Central Colorado!

I’m so glad that this is going to happen again!!! In San Jose, we have already talked about keeping our walks going, maybe even making it a monthly thing. I’ve also been searching through all the Flickr groups from the other cities and it’s just so amazing to see all of the wonderful photos from around the world.

Thanks for bringing us all together. :)

The weather was beautiful, the photographers were enthusiastic and loads of fun, and I got to enjoy it twice. While hosting two walks in one day isn’t something I would necessarily recommend, I can say that the experience was just great. I think that everyone that has now participated has an idea as to why I host these events year round. Thanks to Scott for having my site as an official sponsor for this event, I couldn’t have enjoyed it more.

    Hi Scott,
Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo and Conservatory was a fantastic venue and the work that has come out of it was nothing short of astonishing. In the 5 years that I’ve been a member of NAPP, this was the single biggest reason I would point to to say, “yeah, that’s what it’s all about, community, collaboration, friendship, kindness…….. these guys get it.”

Thank you a ton and at the risk of being “teacher’s pet”, I would be honored to lead a walk again next year.

By the way, our group is going out together again for fall colors, so if any Chicago area shooters or anyone planning to be in Chicago in October wants to join us, let me know.

Had a great tiime walking in Dunedin yesterday with you and RC! Wasn’t it great that we were granted a 2 hour reprive in the weather? Couldn’t have been timed any better. I drove two hours back home just in time for it to rain buckets there too….enough that they had to cancel the Mt. Dora walk.

I’ve got several pictures edited and on my Flickr account…just waiting for you to grant approval to the Dunedin group.

    Thanks again!

A “Best Of” group has been created for the Kelby Photo Walk 2008:

    http://www.flickr.com/groups/kelbyphotowalk2008/

All participants, competing or not competing, are welcome to submit their ONE best photo to the group. It will make for a nice collection so that we can all see the great work produced from the one worldwide event. With over 200 local flickr groups, it is difficult to browse for the best photos from the day, so add yours here and we can see them all in one place for easy browsing and commenting.

    Scott,

Had a great day at the Chicago Lincoln Park walk. Had to drive about 3 hours to participate but it was well worth it. Met some great people, enjoyed a beautiful but hot & humid Midwest day, and even made some pics! It just doesn’t get better than that.

Thanks for starting this and looking forward to the next one. Thanks to Charlie for being the walk leader and doing a great job. One of the walkers described it as “herding cats”.

Charlie’s comment was exactly right: “You guys do get it.”

I had a great time at the Greenville, South Carolina photowalk. I would love to do another one some time so at least count me in for the “Second Annual” photowalk. :-)

I tried to make a Photosynth of our area, but it didn’t turn out very “synthy” as Microsoft calls it. I guess I didn’t take near enough photographs for it to mesh everything together. Still it was a neat learning experience I will definately play around with some more. You can see the synth at: http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=fcaad810-af2a-43c1-b1b8-0dea9e863778&i=0:0:2&z=0.9016190285550587&g=0&p=0:0&m=true

Had a great time at the Photo Walk. I didn’t think it would have been so fun and exciting but it definitely was. People took some great shots and going through some of the Flickr groups I am really impressed. I thought I would just pass this along because it just makes viewing the photos on Flickr so much more enjoyable… there is a plug-ing for most browsers that turns all the Flickr images into a huge 3-D wall. It is a lot easier to navigate than going through the website. (It also works well with a number of other popular sites). Just thought I would share. It is called Cool Iris (formerly Piclens). Works with a number of browsers too (I am using Firefox 3) and is FREE.

    Scott,

The Little Rock Photowalk also had rain for about the first 15 minutes. It cleared up and remained partially cool for August until our walk was finished. After that, the humidity and temperature rose dramatically. There were only 9 out of our 13 that showed up, but it was nice to meet even a handful of fellow photographers. I guess we just have to step up the interest in Arkansas! Thanks for presenting this great opportunity. I look forward to next year!

Hey scott. Great that the rain stopped just in time to you and your group enjoy the Photowalk.
Here in Fort Lauderdale, the weather was beautiful all day long.
We started at 9:00 am and I knew that the Restaurant that I wanted to take the rest of the group would open at 11:00am (perfect timing).
Our 65 Photowalkers were very excited and pleased with the whole organization.
I don’t know about the other groups, but only 48 hours after the Photowalk, and we already have 53 people signed to our Flickr group and 441 pictures downloaded already.

Outstanding news on making this an annual event. I was at the Done-eed-in (pronounced Dunedin) walk and it was most excellent. Lots of folks and the weather cooperated (rained before and after but not much during). We had plenty of photo opportunities and the after-walk luncheon extravaganza at Sea Sea Riders was excellent. I’ve lived here in Clearwater for 16 years and that was the first time I’ve ever been to Sea Sea Riders. What a great choice. I can’t wait until next year.

BTW Scott: I hope you enjoy the Challenge Coin from The Tampa Bay Chief Petty Officer’s Association. That is a very proud tradition among U.S. Navy sailors and it was the very least I could do for you for putting this together for all of us.

We had a little problem getting access tot he original site, so we made a new one.
    The photos are here:

It has been really interesting to see what other walks did, but it is more interesting to see what other people on the same walk captured.

    Scott -

I’m so pleased you’ll be doing this annually! I missed my opportunity to attend in Hartford. :-( I won’t miss the next one! Also, in your co-post discussing the orphanage in Kenya - one of your readers suggested a small registration fee to assist The Bails in the next photo walk, a great idea!

I hope you are able to schedule a Lr tour stop up here in CT - and of course your next Ps power tour too.

    Scott,

I didn’t see a comment from anyone on the Laguna Beach, CA walk so I thought I would add one. We had an amazing time! Our walk leader (Alan Sisto) was incredibly organized and very knowledgeable. On behalf of our group, I would like to thank you for putting on this event. I can’t wait until next years walk.

On a side note, I know that we walked in SoCal but did anyone else get asked if they were paparazzi looking for someone? We must have heard it a dozen times.

    Thanks again,
    John

I never got any emails about this from you but funny my husband did! LOL I think mine ended up in spam heaven. We both signed up and had a total blast Saturday at Oklahoma City. Robert Trawick did a super job! I’m posting some behind the scenes shots on my blog. I added my blog link, not my website link, since the blog is where the real fun happens! Thanks again for creating a worldwide event that really was accessible to anyone who wanted to have fun.

Hey Scott, the photowalk rocks, and I can say that after driving 5 hours round trip to get to OK City!!!

I have a thought. . . why don’t you have a T Shirt designed; “I Survived” with a 2 thumbs up on the front; on the back have, “Scott Kelby’s World Wide PhotoWalk 2008″. Sell these for anyone that would like one and then give the proceeds (profits) to your orphanage project.

Just a thought to a fantastic idea, glad you’re making this an annual event!!!
    Thanks

Had a great time in Boston. Met really nice and talented people.
Hot day and mid-day sun made shooting challenging, but based on the images I’ve seen on Flickr, many people had a lot of success.

I’ll do this again next year for sure.

    Hi Scott,

Syracuse had a fabulous time! None of us had ever done a photowalk and we are all in love with it. It was far more than I could have expected. We will make it a regular thing up here and will all be in for next year.

Thanks for giving us all a cool new experience and memory!

Once again, taking the pictures was the easy part. Being critical of the pictures taken has always been the hard part for me. Part luck in being there at the right or wrong time, understanding what could be done in LR or PS given the time, and being able to let go on something that could be better have always made me try to avoid “contests”. Arghhhh! Still it was nice to meet the 50 and talk about their experience. Thanks for the opportunity on the Los Angeles Historical walk.

    Scott,

Thanks for pulling the event together. We here in Prescott AZ had a fantastic time! There’s already talk of another one in the near future. I think Jerome is topping the list.

Great group of people, some really cool shots and perspectives, and lots of new friends!

Thanks from all of us here in Northern AZ! We’ll be on board for the “annual” part for sure!

It’s fascinating to see everyone’s photos on the San Jose Flickr group. It was fun and a great learning experience! Thanks Scott and Frederick!

I was at Southbank Melbourne Australia and had a great time, a very very cold winters day - but I loved being with a group of people - there is definately safety in numbers - all enjoying being out and about so early in the morning. It is really a fantastic time of day.

I look forward to the next one - maybe a little bit warmer this side of the world.

I have had great fun looking at all the photos from Saturday’s walk, from all over the world. How fantastic to be able to see them all.

I will definately be at the next one, and look forward to viewing all the pics.
