Thursday News Stuff

First, did David duChemin’s post rock yesterday or what??!!! Take a moment to read some of the comments people posted about it yesterday, and you can see how his words of advice resonated with and inspired so many photographers. Thank you David—that was awesome!
Now, onto the news:
- Apparently the rumors of a Nikon D90 aren’t a rumor anymore, as USA Today ran a story on it last night. Apparently it has the larger 3inch LCD screen, 12 megapixels, LiveView, lower noise, built-in sensor cleaning, but the focus of the article was that it is the first DSLR that actually shoots video, too! Here’s a link to the USA Today article, and to Nikon USA’s info on the new D90 (which sells for $999 U.S.—body only).
- Canon also has big news; they released their successor to the 40D, the new 15 megapixel Canon EOS 50D. I would tell you about it here, but just click on the comments and read Alessandro Rosa’s excellent news update on the features (Thanks, Alessandro!).
- Most of the Worldwide PhotoWalk cities have picked their local winners, and now it’s up to me to choose the grand prize winner (hopefully by tomorrow). In the meantime, you’ve just got to check out some of the flickr groups from around the world to see some of the amazing shots taken during this event. There are just some flat out beautiful and intriguing shots!!! Here’s a link to the list of groups. Take a moment to check some out—it’ll make your day!
- OK, it’s the week before Photoshop World, and I want to remind you of five things:
- It’s not too late to register, and we’d love to have you join us in Vegas next week (here’s the link)
- If you can’t make the full conference, don’t forget to come out for the Expo (which is open to the public for two days), and click here to get your free Expo pass.
- If you’re going to the party at The House of Blues, my band, “Big Electric Cat” will be playing a live set (see fake ticket above), so come prepared to dance and shake various and sundry body parts. Remember, “There ain’t no school like the old school!”
- I’m going to be doing a live demo of my “Westcott Scott Kelby Studio Kit” (which uses the Spiderlite TD-5s with the new brighter fluorescent bulbs), in the Westcott booth, and I’m doing a lighting demo at the B&H Photo booth as well (I should have times by tomorrow).
- I’ll be signing copies of my new just hot off the press “Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers” at the official NAPP bookstore, but there’s only a limited amount of copies available there, so I hope I get to sign one for you!
- Sly Arena over at PixSylated.com did a pretty cool post called “10 Tips for your first Photoshop World” (here’s the link), and my buddy Matt Kloskowski did a post called “The Insider’s Guide to Photoshop World” with some great advice for attendees on getting the most from the show (here’s that link).
- One more bit of PhotoWalk news: here’s some final stats:
- We had 8.324 photographers register for local walks
- 47 Counties had participating cities
- 44 States in the US had photowalks
- For a total of 236 cities
- Hey, where’s Joe McNally today? He’s out in Santa Fe, New Mexico on location with our video production crew taping another online class for Kelby Training. I cannot wait to see it! Also, this week we released another class from Photoshop World instructor and digital video guru Richard Harrington. This one’s called “Going Deeper Into Apple Motion.” Here’s the link.
OK, folks. That’s it for today. Have a “legendary” Thursday, and we’ll see you back here tomorrow for some tasty Friday fish nuggets.

Way cool….the very first to comment… David’s post was very inspirational. I almost bypassed the post since I didn’t know too much about David, but very glad to have read every word. Well done David!
Have fun in Vegas! Looking foward to PSW’s return to Boston.

Hey Scott, Will there be a Flickr group for us to view all the winning photo’s?
Hey Scott,
I second Bob’s question about having a flickr group of the winners from each city.
Something else to add to the news bits this week is Canon’s announcement of the new 50D, along with a new EF-S 18-200mm IS lens.
Keep up the great work!
Mike
Hi,
the link below shows the Photowalk Flickr groups instead of the single photos:

Our Bilbao photowalk was really a great expierence.

As a Canon Shooter, I would like to thank Nikon for pushing the envelope in Digital Photography and getting Canon to do it right.
The Canon EOS 50D was just announce pre-Photokina and it looks to be amazing. At 15+MP it is said to have fairly clean signal to noise response files to 3200 ISO as a result of the advancements made in sensor design with new “gapless” microlenses.
Also among the enhancements, it is the first EOS camera to be developed on the new Digic 4 processing chip. This chips processing power allows for the 50D to have a burst rate of 6.3FPS. It also has a lens database that will correct for vignetting automatically in camera based on the lens that you are using.
Canon also got some of the little things right as well, which they haven’t been doing so well in the recent past. They upgraded the screen to 920K and DPReview.com said that with its multiple anti-glare layers, it rivals the screen on the Nikon D3. It also has three levels of autofocus in live view, including a Face Recognition node.
For those new to photography, Canon seems to have even added a virtual Scott Kelby into the 50D with their new Creative Auto Mode. This gives you a slider based set of controls where you can set things like Depth of Field or Subject Brightness in plain English without necessarily needing to know the relationship between aperture and depth of field. Want your Background out of focus, push the slider to the left. Subject is too dark, push that slider to the right. The camera then evaluates the scene to give you the correct settings of aperture and shutter speed.
I think that this Photokina will mark a very exciting time for the advancements we will see in Digital Photography. I think that both Canon and Nikon shooters should be happy for the future. I for one think Canon has finally given me a compelling reason to upgrade from my 20D. And like all good tools I think my 20D may get a new life with an infrared conversion.
I have a suggestion. When the winner is picked from each flickr group…I think it should be done by everyone in the group. Maybe a discussion should be placed inside the group and only the group members can post on it…saying what shot they believe is the best. Also each member is not allowed to vote for their own. That way we are giving Scott the best of what our group thinks the city has to offer.
Alright Scott - I cant make it to PSW - but I have a request
I want to see a vid of Electric Cat featuring the Kelby Keyboard solo - cmon !!
Check out this for a sneak preview of the D90 http://blog.chasejarvis.com/blog/2008/08/chase-jarvis-raw-advance-testing-nikon.html
Looks like a nice piece of kit. I’d be interested to see a comparison with the D300.
In #2 above, missing the tech expo link.
With as much creative talent being shown around the world last Sat in all the Photowalks, what a great idea if we could see the winners from each city in one listing.
“2. 47 Counties had participating cities”
should read
“2. 47 Countries had participating cities”
Thanks for making it happen around the world.
I agree w/ other posts - I would enjoy seeing the winning photos from each participating ciy, in a readily perusable format!
As for making the selection process for a ‘winner’ more complex, lets not get to serious here…this was just a fun event, lets keep it that way! I simply enjoyed participating! Lets not let it get too ‘competetive’ - perhaps one way to do that is not make the ‘grand prize’ too ‘grand’…
Hey I live right near Santa Fe! Is there any way to get a chance to meet and say “hello” to Joe? I reallly appreciate his online lighting classes on your training site! -M
We’re currently collecting a list of the winners in a thread in this flickr group:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/kelbyphotowalk2008/
You’re also welcome to submit your one best image from the day; there are some incredibly impressive images in there already.
The photo walk was really great. Seeing pictures from around the world, amazing. So I’m thinking, and I’m just spitballing here - 300 photographers, a 747, 300 cities - around the world in a year.
Interesting, you can purchase an around the world ticket, good on any flight as long as you keep traveling in the same direction.
Scott, where’s the sign up sheet?
Thanks, Scott! You really started something here.
We had such a good time that our Toronto group is already making plans to get together again for a Fall Photowalk.
Scott:
David Pogue in today’ New York Times, business section wrote a comprehensive column on the new Nikon D90. To see the complete article google New York Times Business section and enter title of his article:
NEW NIKON HOLDS A SECRET.
I’m just crackin’ up about the “Ticketbastard” graphic.
A photo-illustrator I used to know got into a lot of trouble one time when she did something similar to the “TicketBastard” graphic for a major publication.
It was to illustrate a story on how hard it was to get tickets to a certain Smash Broadway hit musical and with a musical number dealing with a certain WWII leader during springtime. She had her designer boyfriend mock up a ticket for the show and in the small print it described how you couldn’t get this ticket even if you performed a specific intimate act with one of the shows stars.
They thought it was a hillarious inside joke until someone at the client decided to loupe the proof print. Needless to say there was a lot of damage control that went on after that!
I could’nt let this slip by.
GOT GLASS???

Hey Scott - when are you going to review the Nikon D90?? i’d be interested in knowing your opinion…especially compared to the D300
