Catch My “Westcott Spiderlite Demo” on the Photoshop World Expo Floor (Plus they’re giving away one of my “Kits!”)

If you’ve been wondering how the Westcott TD-5 Spiderlites you always hear me talking about here on the blog, work—I’m doing a live demo of them at the Westcott booth on the Expo Floor at 1:30 pm on Thursday (the opening day of the show).
I’ll be using the brand new brighter fluorescent bulbs, and I’m going to show how I use them, some of the set-ups I use in the studio, some of the accessories I use, and other stuff like that. I hope you’ll stop by and catch this “mini-session.”
IMPORTANT: Westcott will be also giving away one of my Westcott “Scott Kelby Studio Kits” (sold by B&H Photo) during the show, so even if you can’t catch my class, make sure you stop by and sign up for the drawing (hey, the total prize package is worth around $1,300 and comes with the new brighter bulbs—not too shabby!).

What type of subjects are good for TD-5 Spiderlites? Small objects as shown? They seem too consistently bright to be used for people portraits, are they not?
I’m a Westcott technical rep and will be doing a mini session at Photoshop World as well.
The TD5, with the new 50W daylight fluorescents, are not only good for product photography, they are perfectly suited for portraits. The soft daylight balanced light gives that “bright cloudy day” look and the lack of flash avoids the possibility of squinting or blinking because of the sudden shock of brightness when a strobe fires.
The WYSIWYG (”what-you-see-is-what-you-get”) ease of use of constant lights makes you feel like you are cheating. You see what effect the position of the light will produce before you shoot.
It’s like shooting in daylight but with complete control.
In our booth at Photoshop World, we will have complete portrait set-up, with a model. You are welcome to bring your camera and try it out for yourself.
Sorry, I spelled our website wrong on the above post.
Ooops!
Wow. Can’t wait to see these in action in Las Vegas. I’ve been eyeing these as possible replacements for my cheapo strobes since I saw Scott endorse them, and if they are as good as advertised, they move up my equipment wish list.
Scott,
I was wondering if you had the opportunity to play with the LED light modules that BH offers.
Just curious.
Hi Scott,
Unfortunately I wont be with you guys in Las Vegas but NEVER again will I miss one.
Have a great time (which I know you will) and I look forward to catching up and hearing all about it.
Best wishes to you and yours,
Glyn
I don’t suppose there might a video post of the presentation for those of us not fortunate enough to make it out to vegas?
Correct me if I’m wrong Scott but I thought you had once mentioned that you get no compensation from mentioning the products you use or review.
Therefore, is it safe to assume that you’re not doing a Westcott TD-5 Spiderlites demo for free, just because you like them?
You’ve built the Kelby brand into a respectable, trusted one and it would be very appealing for a manufacturer to offer some juicy compensation in return for a good word! No?
Just wondering!
Hi Kal:
I’m not getting paid for doing the Westcott demo in their booth.
However, just so you know, if I do an outside speaking gig, 100% of my speaking fee goes to Springs of Hope Kenya to help build that orphanage.
I really enjoyed your accusatory tone, though. It really started my morning off right.
-Scott
Oh no…Sorry Scott!
I know it sounds accusatory but it’s not meant to be.
Don’t let that ruin your morning!
I was just incredibly curious/investigative.
I guess it’s due all those journalism courses I took back in college.
Big ups!
-Kal
In my point of view, the question was interesting. Be a public personality ok, but sometimes you have to answer to the public’s questions. That’s life
Intersted too for a video of this product.
What would be your typical setting for a single subject portrait using only the TD-5’s as your only light source? I was wondering if I could get enough light for a adequate Shutter speed while shooting the ever moving children?
