Monday News Update

Mornin’ everybody. Here’s what’s up:
- Just in case you missed my “Rare Friday Night Post,” Adobe posted a Lightroom 2.1 “Release Candidate” free update on Adobe Labs on Friday. Scroll down to Friday’s post for all the details (and a description of what a “Release Candidate” is).
- The Digital Landscape Workshop Series DLWS) (with instructors Moose Peterson, Laurie Excell, and Joe McNally) have posted their workshop location schedule for next year, and I’m telling you now because they’re already starting to selling out for next year. I can’t recommend DLWS enough—-it is an amazing experience (to say the least). Here’s the link to their 2009 schedule, and if you get to go, just know that I am totally jealous!
- PhotoWalk Leader Update: I found out that if you led a PhotoWalk here in the U.S., your Lightroom 2 shipped mid-week last week, and I’ve already heard from some of you that have already received your copy. If you led an international PhotoWalk, your books shipped last Friday, so depending where you are in the world, you should be receiving yours soon! Once again, my thanks to my publishers Peachpit Press/New Riders Press for making all this possible!
- Just a reminder: My Lightroom 2 Live! Tour kicks off in Dallas, Texas on October 27, 2008. Here’s the link.
- If you attended my “Portrait Retouching” session at Photoshop World, Las Vegas, just a reminder; the “bonus” start-to-finish portrait retouch video that I did you for guys, is online at the address that I gave out in class.
- Lastly, the first reviews of my new “Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers” have started to appear. Here’s a really in-depth review from T. Michael Testi at “TheBlogCritics” (link).
- Also, the photography blog “NeutralDay” did an in depth review on my book, “The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2” and although this book has been out since the beginning of the year, I wanted to point this particular review out, because of all the reviews ever done on this book, I think this reviewer did absolutely the best job of describing exactly what the book was about—who it was written for, and why. Here’s the link.
- Tomorrow should be a big day, with Adobe’s big CS4 announcement coming. If you’ve haven’t signed up to be a part of free Web broadcast, click here to sign up.
Have a great day, and make sure you check in tomorrow for the big scoops on all the new stuff!

you forgot the link to the Neutral Day web site.
I am saving up for Yellowstone 2010. As long as I am not pregnant, I will be there and cannot wait. The idea of shooting in winter in Yellowstone - WOW!
Hoping the book arrives today - another thing I can’t wait for!
“you forgot the link to the Neutral Day web site.”…

have a great week !
Scott,
What do you know about the new equipment from Elinchrom.
The new monolights and battery system?
So how are you (and everyone else feeling about LR) Seems to be there’s been a lot of backlash from people who have had nothing but crashing and hassles with 2.0. I know it’s a bit negative, but I wish you would have addressed it a little more
On any case the jury is out on 2.1, but it seems like the brushes may be a bit smoother, and stability may have improved a bit. Time will tell…

Wow, thanks for the mention. Truly appreciated.
Anyone interested in reading a gushing review of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II should head over to co-Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Vincent Laforet’s blog (http://blog.vincentlaforet.com/).
Vincent got to borrow a pre-production version for a weekend and independently produced a movie using the 5D Mark II which Canon will be hosting within the next day. Smugmug is hosting a behind the scenes video that he shot while making the movie.
Vincent feels that this camera will change the face of photography and how photographers work going forward and if there is any photographer with the credentials and forsight to make this prediction it is Vincent Laforet. To back up what he feels, the 1Ds and 1D Mark III shooting professional has pre-ordered four 5D Mark II’s!
The more I read the more confused I get. I tried Lightroom in Beta version last year and decided I would stay with Photoshop. Then Lightroom 2 was released and all the buzz seemed to say it is great and the new features seemed to address things I had found lacking. Then I read a comment posted today and it talks about crashing, etc. I understand Lightroom doesn’t replace Photoshop but I would like a faster method of organizing, and developing the majority of photos that don’t need special attention in Photoshop. Are you now favoring Lightroom over Bridge, Camera Raw and Photoshop for those tasks? Of course, that is today’s question, tomorrow it will probably all change with Adobe’s pending announcement on Photoshop.
I absolutely love Lightroom, but I have to admit that I downloaded the 2.1 yesterday and it crashed this morning - one of those crashes that corrupts the catalog so that it’s unrecoverable. Not a big deal since im religious with backing up, i just opened the last backup. But i was wondering if this happened to anyone else. I also started using a LaCie rugged drive to store all my photos recently - they’re supposed to be great, so i find it hard to believe that could have contributed, but if anyone else has had that experience, i’d appreciate your take! Thanks!
Seriously though, im in love with Lightroom and would never stop using it!
Have the LR2 books for the Photo Walk individual city winners been shipped yet?
Scott:
I LOVE LOVE LOVE your new book! I just shot a pretty important shoot (for me, at least) and the pages are already looking torn and tattered. Such a great reference manual. It’s extremely easy to locate answers to my questions, and I can’t thank you enough for this! I’m sure it will be another best seller to add to your library!!!! Thanks, loads!
Hello Everyone,
i have a question regarding Lightroom 2,
i am a student still, and i have purchased the Education copy.
after importing the photos, and do some editing, and if i need to edit in photoshop, i go under Photo>edit in>… the only the thing highlighted is “Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS3″, the others are grayed out.
Is it because i am using the Educational version? if not, what would be the reason?
thank you so much for your help
Ed
Musta hada a bad day at the Game.
Are the photo walk leaders going to get some notification when their copy of the Lightroom 2 book ships? I still haven’t received my copy, so I’m hoping it just hasn’t shipped yet.
