Ashton and Demi on the Sidelines

One thing I didn’t expect during my sideline shoot at the Chicago Bears vs. Eagles game, was that I’d meet celebrities Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore before the game (I’ve learned since, that Ashton is a longtime devoted Bears fan). My buddy, Bears Chairman Mike McCaskey, brought me over to meet them for minute before the game, and they were both just as nice as they could be.
They talked about their Fantasy teams (they each have one), and how they have big football parties at their house on Sundays, and they just seemed really nice and regular (Demi was much more petite than I realized), despite the fact that everyone standing around them were freaking out as if a bald eagle had flown into their back yard (see the post above).
As I stepped away, another field photographer came up and asked, “Was that Ashton and Demi?” and I said “Yeah.” He said, “Did you get a shot of them?” I hadn’t, so I stepped back (way back, because I had my long glass on), and took the snapshot you see above (that’s Mike McCaskey on the right—one of the nicest and most genuine guys you’d ever want to meet).

pfff ….Hollywood and their ilk makes me queasy – I could care less if they walked out right in from me
I am happy for you though Scott !!
Scott,
Seriously, do you need a model release to show their photos on your blog? I wouldn’t want you to have any problems. I know you know the legal ramifications being a pro and all, so just thought I would ask.
I thought the rule was that if you can recognize a person’s face in a photo, that you had to have a model release; but that may be if you plan to use it for commercial use in terms of sales.
Just checking.

I believe that this would fall under the purview of journalistic photography and therefore requires no model release. If it did, it would kill the paparazzi business. Now if Scott wanted to turn around and sell the image to Nikon for an ad campaign then he would definitely need a release/consent form. By the way Scott, did Ashton have his D90 with him? Probably not.
Did Ashton have his trusty D90 like in the TV commercials?
Scott,
I had the pleasure of meeting Mike McCaskey at a DLWS event in Moab this year. He is genuinely a supremely nice guy and the most unassuming person you would ever want to meet. He is also a fantastic photographer. He was kind enough to share many of his photos with me as we sat at Moab International waiting on our flight- twin turboprop with pilots who had to be teen-agers(I have pics of Mike asleep!). I think he would make a great guest blogger one Wednesday. He is as articulate as he is nice.
Frickin’ Awesome!
I watch your PhotoshopUserTV all the time. Thanks for doing what you do.
I use it mostly for Web stuff, but you all have taught me a thing or two.
Great shot.
I hope you are adding a chapter to The Digital Photography Book Vol 3 for paparazzi photography.
Hey Scott, Question about the photograph you took. I noticed that Demi is in sharp focus while the others are slightly out of focus. I was wondering if you did this on purpose or if this was your wedding photographer instincts kicking in where as long as the woman is in focus nothing else matters or if it’s just a case of get the shot and worry about the rest later.
In any case, I think it’s a good example of where if the woman is in focus then the rest of the picture doesn’t matter as much (unless, I suppose, you’re an Ashton fan).
My guess is that he had his camera all set to shoot sports action wide open and with center point focusing and just pulled this off quick to try to get the shot before it was too late.
To Bill:
That’s exactly as it happened. I was going to post that answer myself tonight, and then I saw your comment.
Many thanks,
-Scott
Well… You certainly did get the right subject in focus!!
And as a BEARS fan, I love your recent pictures. MAN, what I would give to be able to join you on those sidelines!!!!
