Joe McNally Scores Another National Geographic Cover Shot

That McNally guy has done it again—this time scoring a cover shot, and a set of feature spreads for a story on Neanderthals in the October issue of National Geographic.
Joe is such a humble guy that on his blog he barely mentions that he shot this cover. In fact, after mentioning in passing that he got the cover for this feature on Neanderthals, he quips, “As I mentioned to my editor, they got the right man for that job.” Man, that’s humble. If I had shot a cover for National Geo, I probably would have rented a series of nationwide billboards and possibly a large blimp shouting it from the rooftops!
Some of the spreads from the article are seen below. Congrats Big Joe, and may there be many more covers to come.

Hey Scott,
You also deserve credit for agreeing to model for it. I hardly recognized you without your glasses! I also like the early Gitzo monopod in the bottom two shots; those neanderthals were SO backward they did not even use carbon fibre duh!

When I got the modeling gig, they just told me “don’t brush your hair that day.”

I bought this edition of National Geo without realising it was Joe… then I saw it pictured on Joe’s blog and had to go back and appreciate the imagery all over again.. Life is tough!
I have to say that Joe is inspirational, in his imagery, his book and in his presentational style on kelbytraining. thank you for introducing me to his work (you recommended his “The Moment it Clicks” in one of you recent books)
Cheers
Scot
Ahh yes, the Neanderthals, now there’s a lengthy discussion lol I’ve been staring at that cover for quite some time now and haven’t been able to slow down long enough to read it. Now when I get home, however, I’m removing that plastic bag with great fury (:
Outstanding shots Joe, and thanks for bring this to our attention Scott!

I was so excited when I got my October issue of NG and saw that Joe had done the shoot for the Neanderthal article. I was excited for him and for me for actually recognizing a name like that.
Ya, that sounds like Joe. Probably making wise cracks about Neanderthals the whole time. Congrats Joe!
Yea when he lectures for you – he seems like a regular guy (who knows his stuff) .
I just bought the Croatian edition of NG (AFAIK, same content as US just translated).
great photos!
didn’t even realize it was Joe. *respect*
Did someone pose for this shot, or is it just someone Joe knows, and wanted to help out?
Joe is such a compassionate guy, he would anyone a chance to make some bucks!
I really enjoy these naturally lit shots of real people from small out of the way places. Who knew?
Thanks Joe for giving that guy a hand.
I know (well, not personally) Joe McNally from NAPP and Photoshop User TV & Magazine.
When I received this month’s copy of Nat’l Geo while perusing the cover story I noticed his name and thought to myself “Hey I know him!” – lol.
Congrats to Joe on a job well done!
