Photoshop Insider Thursday ‘News Stuff’
Oct. 23
1:52 am

Hi folks! It’s Thursday, here’s what’s up:
- First, a big thanks to Rich Harrington for his excellent Guest Blog yesterday. You can see how much time and thought Rich put into that post, and from the wonderful comments he got, you can see the impact what he shared will have on many users. Nice job, Rich (as always).
- Adobe has released a free update to Lightroom 2, and Camera Raw 5, which includes supports for new cameras, and in Lightroom’s case, a few bug fixes are included as well. You can download the free updates from Adobe (here’s the link).
- Big News: Michael Tapes (and the crew at Imagenomics) have released an update to the incredibly hot new utility “Instant JPEG from Raw.” The update (like the utility itself) is free with added camera supports and some minor fixes. Download it free from RawWorkflow.com
- Just a reminder; I’m teaching three FREE SESSIONS at the Photo Plus Expo today in New York City: (1) at 1:00 pm I’m teaching a Lightroom and CS4 Killer Tips session at the Adobe Booth. Then onto Peachpit’s booth at 3:00 for a Portrait Retouching Session, and then wrapping up at Westcott’s booth with a demo of how I use their Spiderlite TD-5s. Hope you’ll stop by and say “hi!”
- Tomorrow’s the last day to enter my iPhone Photo Contest, for your chance to win a $500 Apple Store Gift Card, or a $100 iTunes Gift Card if you win one of the five photo categories. All the info is right here.
- Matt Kloskowski did a video interview with me about my new “Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers” over at his blog, Lightroom Killer Tips. It’s a short interview, and can watch it right here.
- Jeff Revell did a great tutorial over at his PhotoWalk Pro blog about how he edited his shots from the Int’l Gold Cup Race we shot last Saturday (Jeff and I both edited our images using the same technique—I won’t spoil it though–you’ll have to watch the video). Here’s the link.
- Janine Smith (one of my friends, and a wonderful photographer) pointed out this cool Lightroom pop-culture reference to me: “Was delighted to get John Sandford’s latest crime novel this week, “Heat Lightning.†To my surprise, on page 47, a bad guy uses Adobe Photoshop Lightroom to get a license plate by (in detail, correctly) using the sliders on a series of photos to enhance them. When he’s got the license plate, he proceeds to find and kill the guy, so Adobe would probably not appreciate the publicity.” I’m used to seeing Photoshop references in pop culture, but this is the first time I’ve seen Lightroom. Too cool! (Thanks Janine, for sending that my way).
That’s it for today folks. Hope I’ll see you in New York, or in Dallas on Monday, or in Orlando on Wednesday! Have a great day!!!

Hi Scott,
I was at a Barnes & Noble bookstore today and while I was looking at the photos books I noticed your Scott Kelby’s Digital Photography Boxed Set: The Digital Photography Book, Volumes 1 and 2 which includes postcard-sized images of your work. It looked very nice. I don’t remember that you mentioned it before. I guess it’s only sold at Barnes & Noble.
Also, I use Michael Tapes, “Instant JPEG from Raw” software program all the time. It works great.
Keep up all the great work,
Robert

Hi Scott!
Another news: the “Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.1 UPDATE” is now available for download on the Adobe website! It has lots of improvements in it!
Have a great day,
Markus
And more news: Scott Kelby’s Lightroom 2 book is now available on the O’Reilly Safari site. If you’re not familiar with Safari, it’s online book publishing with mostly computer/IT material but also lots of photography books. I think that all of Scott’s books are on Safari, as well as titles by many other familiar authors (e.g., Matt Kloskowski, Dan Margulis, Katrin Eisman, Vincent Versace, Ben Willmore, among many others).
Many people don’t like reading books online, but if you can stand that, it’s a pretty extensive library. Safari has various plans. I pay a flat rate per month to use it. I signed up originally for the computer material but have gotten much more value from the photo books.
I don’t have a financial interest in the venture. I’m just a satisfied customer!
Hi Scott,
Your very last entry about Dallas. If I wasn’t teaching on Monday myself, I woujld be there. That’s okay, I’ll be there in spirit. You guys will have another seminar in OKC some day and I will surely be there.
Thanks for the daily blog. Reading it is definately part of my morning routine.
Mike
Aaaahhh, I thought that was a little dash of Lucisart!
Enjoy the Big Apple
Scott,
Just curious…this LR update appears to read as the exact same one that came out last month and I would have thought this update would be titled LR 2.2 update.
I haven’t uploaded this update, yet, but the readme is exactly the same as that from last month.
I did notice the date of the release is yesterday, so perhaps Adobe is keeping this one a bit lower key and really did fix the adjustment brush this time.
I will let you know.
Pat in Houston.
Scott,
Just read on Matt’s LR Killer Tips that this is the official LR 2.1 release since the one last month was a type of beta version.
My fault and sorry for the mix up on my part. I will load it up and see what happens tonight.
Take care,
Pat
Now if only I wasn’t saving up for the d300 I would be like white on rice with that Lucis plug-in…dang it!
Great post as always Scott….can I elect YOU for president?
What perfect timing! According to their website they’ll start selling LucisArt again tomorrow (Oct 24). Now the question is which version to get….
Hi Scott,
I came across David Nightingale’s gallery today (http://www.chromasia.com/galleries ). It’s pretty awesome. Very inspiring.
For my RAW workflow, I import my photos with Picasa 3 (beta). Picasa will let me view the NEFs from my D90. From there I open in ACR/Photoshop. The one caveat is that Picasa’s color rendering for NEFs is HORRIBLE (hoping that is fixed in the final release) . I don’t immediately see a reason to use IJFR, though a lot of people are raving about it. Am I missing something?
btw the Digital Photography Books TOTALLY ROCK! Thanks!
Chris
Just wanted to say thanks for signing my copy of your Lightroom 2 book today at the show after your Adobe presentation. Was great to finally get to see a live Kelby demo.
Sean
Scott,
I bought the Digital Photography boxed set @ B&N today…it is awesome! It is so nice to have a friend that is able to tell you how to do it without a long lecture that usually loses me after the first 5 minutes.
Also, I am one of those people who read every word of the introduction…as a matter of fact it was your introduction that made me fall in love with you and purchase my first Kelby book! I am now the proud owner of several of your books and I read the intro in every one of them. I have also encouraged other people to by your books instead of some of the other authors (I won’t mention names) that are EXTREAM-ly boring!
One last thing…thank you, thank you, thank you for teaching me in a matter of minutes the techniques that I had been trying to learn for weeks
I downloaded and tried IJFR! What a great find. Have a question though. I had a shoot that was shot with JPEG +RAW. The jpeg file that was extracted with IJFR was 1MB and the JPEG file that was with the shoot was 5.2 MB. But they have the same size. Can someone explain that to me?
