Report From My Dallas Lightroom 2 Tour Kick-Off

First, I want to thank everybody who came out yesterday to help launch my new Lightroom 2 Tour in Dallas (photo above from yesterday’s event; by Jeff Leimbach). Anytime you launch something of this scale, it makes you hold your breath a little, but we had a really great day, and the people in Dallas were incredibly gracious, polite, and just plain fun to spend the day with.
They were especially patient when, for some reason, my seasonal allergies kicked in big time right before lunch and I nearly blew out the overhead speakers a few times with coughs and sneezes that came on before I could hit the mute button.
Despite all that, the real challenge of the day was fitting all the new Lightroom 2 stuff in to a full-day that was already packed to the gills (we actually ended the day nearly 20 minutes late, which means I’ll be tweaking a few things for Orlando tomorrow to bring us in for a landing closer to “on time”).
I did a quick show of hands to see how many people were already using Lightroom 2; how many were still on Lightroom 1, and how many didn’t have Lightroom at all, but were there to see if this was their workflow of the future. Only around 40% of the nearly 500 photographers on hand yesterday actually had Lightroom 2, but by the end of the day, people were lining up to tell me they were going straight home to upgrade (some ordered it online right during the day). The lightbulb really went on for a lot of people yesterday (which I totally dig), and for a lot of folks it was the first time they had seen Photoshop CS4 (I dedicated nearly an entire class to using Lightroom 2 and CS4 together).
We’ll be back in Dallas in early December with Ben Willmore’s “Photoshop CS4 for Photographers” Tour, and I can tell you this; Ben is going to love the friendly hospitality of the folks in Texas. Thank you all so much for your support; for coming out and spending the day with me, and I hope what you learned yesterday helps you in your work, and fun, in Lightroom 2. Now onto Orlando!

Sounds like a lot of fun…C Ya Tomorrow in Orlando
Scott,
I just want to thank you so much for coming to Dallas with this tour. A lot of times I feel like events in general just skip right over us. The seminar was awesome! I don’t think one person there said ” lightroom 2 is not for me” Thanks again Scott….Great job!!!
Hope you make it to Atlanta. I have already heard about Dallas from people that were there. All very cool things!
Any chance this class will become available on Kelby Training?
Thank you SO MUCH, Scott! That was truly the most information I’ve gotten in that short amount of time like…ever. My friend and I had an absolute blast all day, and we’re very excited that we both FINALLY got answers to some questions that have been bugging us for a while, as well as learned a bunch of new stuff that LR2 can do! Very awesome. I just wish you had felt a little better. Oh, and that I had won the printer.
p.s. My friend thinks you sound just like Tom Hanks.
Any plans to bring the Lightroom 2 tour to Seattle or Portland?
Scott,
Why aren’t you coming over to the UK with your tour. When Ben came over last year he sold out in London and I’m sure you’d do the same, probably twice over. I might nag you for the next few days on this
Phil
Oh i so wished those tours were available in Europe aswell.
There is so much to learn, and nothing better then seeing it real life!
Keep on going Scott, and don’t forget the little europeans…
I downloaded lightroom 2 and was struggling with all the features. I then went to Kelby Training and got the Koswolki (sounds like the character out of monsters inc!) tutorial video. What a revelation I am now enjoying my photography more as downloading to LR2 and working on them. It is even more fun when you discover tethered shooting.
Rich
I have to say I diggin LR2 now that the 1.1 is out and the bugs are cleaned up.
Sadly your tour is not taking you to the Seattle area. I’d like to come out and see you in action.
Gavin
Scott,
I’m one of the “40%” that already had LR2 and I’m happy to say that I picked up a “ton” of imformation during your classes yesterday in Dallas. Your teaching style is very entertaining and effective and your overall knowledge of the product is amazing. Please schedule more tours for the Dallas area … we are waiting impatiently to learn more. Sure wish I would have won that printer – maybe next time?
Scott: As a person just learning Lightroon 2 your presentation yesterday was awsome. It answered so many questions I had. I got the product as a free download to see if it was something I could use…that was an understatement ! I quickly bought the software on line and within a week I used it to great advantage on a photo shoot. It saved my life. Now that I have had more time to spend with it plus your seminar in Dallas I can’t say enough good things about it.
You and your staff are always welcome here in Dallas. We can’t promise a Cowboy game every time, but the City is full of fun people that love photography. As we say here in Texas…”Y’all come on down !”
I really enjoyed yesterday, especially the live shoots. It was great getting a better look at Lightroom 2. While I was there I also picked up a NAPP membership. If anyone out there is wondering whether or not NAPP is worth the $99, trust me, it is. Thanks Scott! Hope you’re feeling better soon. And sorry for the Bucs lost. Actually, I’m not sorry about that. >:)
Scott
I have upgraded to LR2 and have purchased your LR2 book which I enjoyed even though I also have your LR1 book.
In reading your section, I too use “picks” in the folder and then collections to narrow down the photos I want to work on. However when I make the jump to CS3 and come back, LR2 puts my PSD file stacked in the folder but NOT in the collection. I would like to have it my collection since it is the version I want to use. Am I doing something wrong or is this “working as designed?”
Thanks.
JD
Scott,
Great to see you yesterday in Dallas. My favorite part about the event was your easygoing style/jokes that made the learning experience so enjoyable.
I was sorry to hear you had a little bit of hassle by the “tripod police” the night before, but I am glad you stood up for our rights and that the rest of your encounters were courteous and friendly.
Thanks— Tom H
When is the Lightroom tour coming to Denver?
Okay, let’s see some of the photos you were taking during the event.
Keep it up Scott
?
Curious to know what are you shooting in the photo above
Hey Scott,
Please bring the Lightroom 2 Tour to Detroit!!!!
Thanks,
Diane
I’m just crossing my fingers I’ll see an Atlanta date on the tour schedule.
I second the request for a DVD of your live presentation!
I think those of us that can’t make it to your tour would be so happy to get access to it.
So what about a visit to Vancouver or Seattle?
Thanks!
Scott,
First of all thanks for coming to Dallas, it seems like nobody wants to come to Texas…nothing to see here really…anyway, the presentation was just awesome!
Thanks!
