Tuesday News Quickies

2:01 am

Hi Gang. It’s Tuesday–here’s what’s up:
- Even though I provide a detailed step-by-step workbook for people who come to my Lightroom 2 Tour, a lot of folks still take their own notes, on in the case of Amanda Kern (A professor of Graphics Technology, at Valencia Community College), they create SketchNotes (like the one seen above, which Amanda created during the day). She posted a number of these SketchNotes from the day on her blog, and they’re just so clever I thought you’d get a kick out of seeing them (here’s the link). Thanks Amanda, for letting me share these über-doodles with my readers.
- Yesterday my Photoshop User TV co-host Dave Cross posted a link to a downloads page within Adobe where you can download some of the filters and things Adobe quietly removed in Photoshop CS4 (things like Extract, Pattern Maker, and Picture Package [contact sheet II] among others). Here’s the link to Dave’s article.
- Last night we announced the winners of our ‘iPhone Photo Contest,” and you can check out the category winners (chosen by your votes), and the Grand Prize Winning Shot (which is pretty darn amazing), by clicking right here.
- One of my readers, Jim Geduldick, turned me onto this video of a Photoshop retouch by Aaron Nace of ARFotography, and it’s just pretty cool to check out. It doesn’t really show you how he did it; it’s more of a time-lapse thing, but it’s very short and worth checking out to see how it unfolds. Very well done. Here’s that link.
- If you’re a photographer with either an iPhone or an iPod touch, check out this cool downloadable application for photographer’s called PhotoBuddy, which is basically a utility that, in the words of tech guru Terry White, “…aims to be your photo assistant.” Terry has a full review of it on his tech blog, and it’s looks pretty darn sweet. Here’s the link.
It’s kind of a quiet day, so that’s it for me today. Have a great Tuesday everybody!

Sehr geehrter Herr Kelby!
Justus Just
So Scott, and how are your German skills??
Hi Scott,
When you get a chance check out the new interview. I think you will love it. Christian even attended your Lightroom tour and he told me before the interview he would love a hit on your blog. Any chance?

Hey Scott,
It’s Tuesday, and here’s what’s up! It’s election day and we are going to elect a new president!

The iPhotos link is working now. Wow, the grand prize winner is pretty amazing!
I’ll admit–I have an iPhone and have taken some spectacularly horrible pictures with it. I saw the contest and thought, “How good could they possibly be?”
Oh. That good. (Mmmm, humble pie. Delicious!)
The best show picture is truly amazing. I wonder where that was taken, and if he used an iTunes app at all..
WooHoo! Go Oreo! (my dog)
)
It’s about time he starts earning his keep!
Do you think I can use this to convince my wife that I need a new lens? “But honey, I’m an award winning photographer.”

Thanks Scott for all of your amazing posts. Just want to remind all US visitors of this site to go out and VOTE today. Doesn’t matter who you are voting for, you still have a right to choose and be heard. Take advantage of that!
Do you have any plans of bring your Light Room tour to the mid Atlantic; PA Or MD? I’m signed up for the CS4 for Photographer in Baltimore. You bring the LR2 tour to Baltimore I’ll even treat you to crabs at Woody’s crab house in North East MD my hometown.
Dewitt Jones is the winner? Come on–I mean I’m sure the contest was open to anyone, but he’s a pretty big time pro! Plus that photo was recently in his Outdoor Photographer column.
I suppose I should be mostly disappointed that he entered at all. Pros who make a living at photography should consider the vagaries of gallery owners, editors, stock photo markets, art fair weather, etc. as contest enough. Leave these little things to people with day jobs.
Could you please contact ken@1800blogger.com

Is that true? That kinda sucks… I won the office category prize, and I did think that Jones’s picture was super amazing… I guess the big time pro wanted to play with the little guys..
.. something like the Seinfeld show, where “Kramer” is the best in his Karate class – young kids. lol.
Please take an online survey for a graduate school project on photography. Link below. The more the better…Please help!

I was disappointed when I scrolled down the page of winners in the I-Phone
contest to “fine art.” It’s always interesting to see how just plain old pornography somehow gets described as “fine art” when it’s presented to the public in the “art” world. Nudity, and somehow it’s usually of women, is still offensive no matter what the venue. Of all the photos you must have received, I was sorry to see you go this route. I was hoping for something better of you.
To Vicky:
That was the one READERS voted for and chose as the winner.

Scott I attended the Dallas Lightroom session.Loved it. I am looking to get the Westcott lights you recommend to shoot newbors and babies at their homes. I spoke to the Westcot folks and the person I spoke to recommended the halos instead of the soft box. what would the difference be and why do you prefer the soft box? Thanks.
I was intrigued by the sketched our notes above! I already saw a few answers to some of my questions just in that one graphic.
For those of us that are no where near one of your LR2 Tour stops (and reeeaaally wish they could go!!!), would you say that your LR2 book covers the same practical material? If so, I’m running out to get one asap!
Thanks Scott for your continual giving into this community.
I enjoyed the link to Arron’s Photoshop video. He charges $250.00 bucks to learn his advanced photoshop skills for one month tutoring (way too expensive for me). I wish NAPP would do tutorial videos like that and not the dumb quickies they do, like to make a frame or add a texture to an image. How about some advanced stuff for NAPP members from end to end like this video?
