MacBook Pro Review Q&A (Haters Unite!)
I had a lot of questions and comments from the MacBook Pro review I posted last week, so I thought I’d address a few of them of them here.
Q. Why don’t you just use a mouse?
A. The reason I have a MacBook Pro at all, is because of travel (as I said in the review; I have a MacPro at home, which is my main machine for doing photography, retouching, and editing). You can’t easily use a mouse on a plane, or in a taxi, or in the airport, or in all the places I bought a MacBook Pro for in the first place, like where I’m sitting writing this right now, where my “laptop” is in my lap.
Q. How can anyone seriously use Photoshop with a trackpad?
A. I’ve been doing it for years now, and while I’m not a trackpad fan to begin with, I was starting to get Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and was having to sleep with arm braces on all night, and take other measures. When I stopped using the mouse, and only used the trackpad or a Wacom tablet, it all went away, and I haven’t had a problem since.
Q. While I feel I should be the last person to give you advice about color correction, here goes: if you are relying on your screen to determine how your prints will look, you’re doing it wrong.
A. When I send prints to a printing press, I go by the numbers. When my output is the Epson on my desk, or to a photo lab, I go by my screen. That’s why they make hardware calibration devices in the first place.
Q. A number of people posted really nasty comments about your review, including a number that include swearing at you, racial slurs, calling you stupid, a loser, and much worse. This stuff usually doesn’t happen on this blog—-why now?
A. It happens anytime you write something negative about Apple, no matter how minor.
Q. I also noticed that a number of PC users posted angry anti-Apple comments. Why is that?
A. It happens anytime you write something positive about Apple, no matter how minor.
Q. Where are those comments now?
A. I deleted most of them, but if you really want to see what a huge stupid loser I am, read unedited cussing, and references to my mother, (and much more), go check out the 209 comments about my review at Digg.com. Here’s the link (for your convenience).
Q. Don’t they know you’ve been an Apple supporter for many years?
A. It’s doesn’t matter—no one is allow to criticize Apple. Just ask Terry White (who runs MacGroup Detroit—if he posts the most minor criticism of an Apple product, he gets slammed). When I criticize Adobe, nobody gets upset, and I hope it’s because they know I’m not an Adobe-hater; I only point these things out because I want Adobe to keep improving their products, which they do. Adobe listens. When I criticize Apple, it’s for the same reasons, (In this case, I want them to give me a preference to turn off the gestures, or I want Adobe to give me a preference to turn off Rotate View”) but when you criticize Apple “All bets are off.” I’m not an Apple-hater on any level. But I’m hatin’ that trackpad. Whoops—I did it again.
Q. Have you gotten your prints back from MPIX yet, to compare screen to output?
A. Not yet (it’s a long story why), but I won’t have them back until next week. More on this then.
Q. Anything else?
A. Nope. I await your angry responses. In all caps, if possible, and don’t forget to use a fake name and anonymous email address.

Thanks, Scott, for your great blog, guests, and terrific information you provide.
I’m glad you have a great sense of humor. (Unfortunately, along with a high profile one needs a thick skin to protect from the barbs that many use to put people down.)
Thank you for your good work and efforts. Most educational and appreciated.
I love your blog Scott. I am a Apple convert form windows and fell in love. I have sworne off windows last Novemeber this month is my Anniversary.
I value your opinions on everything that is why i come here everyday since day one of your blog.
I did buy one of the new MBP’s inspite of the glossy screen, I was nervous and still am. The track pad to me feels wonderful, nicer than any otehr notebook i have ever owned. Though I will never spend hours editing with it like yourself, I will use a mouse as my fingers cramp using trackpads for to long at a time. It is very inconvient to carry and use a mouse while traveling, but necessary for me anyways.
I know I have came across wrong with a couple of my comments inthe past, but never meant to be an attack. Honestly most came across the wrong way, very wrong way i guess.
But, thanks for everything you do and give back to us.
Thank your for honest appraisal of the new MacBookPro. I share dissatisfaction over the reflective glass-covered screen.
Via NAPP I have enjoyed your lectures and books.
Ignore the nit-wits.
Best Regards.
I feel your pain. The other day I saw a clansman all dressed up in his white sheets, with an Apple logo on the chest. He was carrying a PC laptop that had a noose around it and was shouting system slurs like, “Mac power!” He then set fire to the PC but the flames caught on to his sheets and he dropped down and started rolling and screaming. We all just kind of walked away wondering when the hate will end.
YOU ARE NOT A LOSER! YOU ARE A VERY NICE PERSON!
Scott,
I have always appreciated your opinions and honesty. Keep up the good work and know that your words are always appreciated by those who care.

Hi Scott,
thanks for a thoughtful and useful review. I’m a MacBook user, and I’m very tempted by the new MacBook Pro. Think I’ll wait until the new year when htey’ve sorted everything out. Well, maybe I’ll wait…sigh.

scott you are a 100% right. some apple users are really crazy about apple and how great apple is with every single product. I love apple too and use apple computers for many years, but not everything what apple produces is good or perfect. apple tv is crap and I hate the new glossy displays.
PLEASE do not change and write the way you always use to write. You are the best and NEVER CHANGE!!! thanks and good night from germany
I’m usually just a lurker.. but I feel I must drop you a note and tell you how much I appreciate your honest assessment of all of the products you review. Your expertise, integrity and sense of humor make your blog a ‘must read’ for me every day.
Thanks for all of your contributions to the creative community. Don’t let the bad guys get you down.
WOW! What the heck happened here?, I was gone for like 7 days and I come back and the coolest guying the world (Scott Kelby) is now being hated on. I have never met you Scott, but I sure hope you aren’t the kind of guy that takes these things to heart. I love your reviews and I love it when you criticize the things that I love, it just gives a different perspective. Even though I am a big MAC user, your article just proves that to some people “MAC” is their “jesus”, and you don’t mess with some-ones jesus. Anyways. (By the way, I am a follower of Jesus Christ, so this is in no way a religious slam, just a point that some mac users are worshiping their computers which is totally lame)
Dude, your stuff is great and I really appreciate your hard work.
I am still interested in coming to Tampa in January to check out your studio. Let me know if this is even possible.
Many blessings bro!
John
Scott - I’m a longtime Mac user - first was a IIsi - and love my MacPro and still love my PBG4. It was very interesting to read your experience with how the button-less trackpad worked with PS.
With regard to the comments posted here, all of the anonymous anger on the web is out of control. I don’t know if parenting just completely broke down for many and they don’t realize that they’re, at best, not communicating effectively or if these folks would be lovely in person by-and-large and it’s just that comments on a web site are dehumanized for them.
I’ve hoped for awhile now that the news sites would do away with the comment feature on the blogs. If folks want to say something, take a little of the anonymous and instantaneous out of it and have them go back to writing letters to the editor. Perhaps in that context folks will take a moment to think things through a bit, realize that they’re writing to other people. Of course, there have always been the vitriolic letters to editors as well but at least they don’t go out for print immediately and reduce the discourse, spawn equally negative responses, and distract immediately from the main content, depriving the reader of the atmosphere to think about what they’re just read and critically consider why they agree, disagree or have no alignment with a given comment.
So, Scott, here’s one vote for removing the comment feature from your blog. Mr. Peterson has disabled the feature on his excellent blog and I think the photo site is better for it. I realize you value feedback and so perhaps you might include a feedback link or contact email for letters - albeit electronic ones - to you as the editor.
Regards,
Theodore
Some of the tech site have commented in the past that Steve Jobs has an incredibly foul temper. I have encountered angry appleites on Flickr and they definately are to be avoided. I have a PC with Vista and getting it ready for a tune up I checked the problems list and found that it had;
win desktop manager - 102 times - stopped working
Host Process for Windows - 10 times stopped working
IE7 - 299 times stopped working 7/11/08 to 12/28/08
Win Search Filter - 22 times stopworking 10-18-07 to 3-15 08
Win Search Indexer - 25 times stopworking 1-6-07 to 10-22-08
Windows Search Protocol Host - 55 times stopworking 12-21-07 to 10-15-08
Windows - 46 times shut down unexpectedly - not reported - 4-11-08 to 10-29-08
Windows Defender Command Line Utility 276 times MpTelemetry - not reported 7-26-07 to 10-28-08
Windows Explorer - 30 times stopwork
In fact, since I made this list Win Explorer has crashed several time a day.
Your post was objective and funny. Funny because in some of those 299 IE7 crashes I know EXACTLY how you feel.
Bullies are pitiful, aren’t they? Funny how they usually are anonymous, so that makes them cowards too. I am sorry to read your post about the nasty comments. I did read your review, and thought it was fair. I’ve always had fun (sarcasm) with trackpads that jump about when your thumb hovers over them.
I’m very interested in what you say about your methods of avoiding rsi, as it’s something I’ve had a lot of problems with too. I tend to use a large mouse as my best solution, but will try using my wacom pen more and see if that’s better.
Hugs (the best anti bully defence I know),
Kerri
It’s such a shame people left inappropriate comments. I was simply going to suggest that you wouldn’t have the issue with the track-pad if you amputated your right thumb, although that would make holding your camera harder! I’ve only just found this blog…and I went to find your 7 points book at Barnes & Noble only to discover it had sold-out, so you must be doing something right!

So . . . if there were that many people that complained that you needed to make a whole new post about the complaints, exactly how many people (like myself) were there that thought the review was fine, saw your thumb thing as somewhat of a personal problem, and didn’t say anything? Why are we making this a big deal anyway? I guess I’m still a little confusificated.
PC or Mac, they’re just tools, the same as different camera brands. I just don’t understand why people get so worked about these things. One of my favorite sayings is:
“Although I vehemently disagree with what you are saying, I will fight to the death for your right to say it”
I believe strongly in both parts of this saying and you are hardly being controversial or offensive. Criticism can be constructive and we all need to learn how to take it on board to get better, in any walk of life. That includes companies like Apple, IBM, HP, Adobe, Microsoft, Nikon,Canon etc, etc… There are no scared cows!
Yet again I find myself amazed (though I shouldn’t) that some people feel compelled to write such scathing comments.
This, as the URL states is Scott Kelby’s site and so by the very nature of it, means he can post his own comments/opinions. Anyone who doesn’t agree with them or is offended in anyway can simply go visit another site that only says good things about everything.
I for one am an Apple fanatic. Love them! Could never go back to windows, but that is my preference. I do however accept that Apple don’t always get it right. The trackpad on my old Powerbook was faulty as it was on many others, Time Capsule .. great idea but incredibly slow; that being said, my opinion towards Apple hasn’t changed.
I’m reminded of a saying .. “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you” … Scott clearly puts alot of time into passing on information to us all via this site so please kindly keep your rants to yourselves or atleast write them in such a way that isn’t so offensive. Not much to ask now is it ?
Scott! Just got turned on to the ‘photoshop guys’ video podcast, and you and the team are great! Also I saw all the flak you were getting over your macbook p. comments/review, and as a new macbook p. user, I agree, with your points, and just wanted to show some support. Keep the blog going! And forget the losers, us guys in Iraq are happy with the results! So Keep at it
-Rich
Scott,
Better a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy! Enjoyed your honesty and candor. Keep up the great topics!

I own a Mac [and shock horror a PC], yet at times I’m embarassed to say I own a Mac as the Macolytes are so flipping bonkers, I really don’t want to be associated with them. The iconic 1984 Mac ad has proven deeply ironic it seems, as the cult of Apple is like brainwashing it seems, with everyone having to get down on their knees to Steve Jobs!
Hi Scott,
When I give my opinion on something, no one seems to care. I would call it an honor to be criticized for my opinions. It shows that you are special and very important!!!
Thanks for all the time you put into educating us.
Hi Scott,
I am a faithful lurker and wanted to say I hope you keep posting on anything and everything. I like getting your opinion on things. I’m sorry some people are stupid….
Keep up the good work.

Here’s another one - why does installing a RAW update from Apple require a reboot? Totally nuts!
I agree with you completely on the hardware calibration. On a Matte screen I can get pretty darn close to my prints, but glossy makes it almost impossible to get an accurate blackpoint. Steve’s comment about turning up the brightness to overcome the glare makes that issue even worse. And before someone says it - you can’t just put a matte overlay, as the blackpoint is still screwed up.
I will admit though, that I tend to use an external monitor for serious color correction since I can better control the brightness/backlight and individual color channels. Which makes the glossy-only cinema displays even more nuts than the laptops themselves. I expect I’ll do rough calibration in the field, then final on the external non-Apple monitor when I get back to the studio.
I’ve elected to wait for a year for the Nethlam MBP’s since I didn’t see anything compelling with this version (I have a late 2006 MBP) that would trigger an upgrade. Hopefully Steve will get over his nutty ‘you can download HD movies’ idea and put blu-ray drives in them. I also expect that they’ll support 8GB of RAM, and fix all the ergonomic issues of the current revision.
And if we’re lucky, they’ll also have a matte screen.
Here’s my hate-filled response. I HATE not being able to read PSI! I HATE it when you don’t post! It makes me REALLY ANGRY to see other sites that are inferior to this one! I DESPISE when other sites are not honest in their assessments of products/software!!!!!!!
Scott,
I’ve been looking forward to this post (which I assumed would be coming after seeing the comments section of your review). I feel now (as I did when I read the review) that you shouldn’t have to buy a mouse to make your $2000 laptop useable. I’ve been curious to hear about someone’s experience w/ that new trackpad since they released it. I don’t think I would like not having at least one button. Hope they resolve the issue for you (and other users) soon. I’m also looking forward to hearing your print results vs. your new shiny screen. Thanks for the blog. I enjoy reading it!
Ryan
Scott,
I appreciate your approach to this blog and your honest take on the products you use.
I’ve been an Apple Mac user for almost 20 years now, and won’t change anytime soon. But the have a lot of room to improve.
I went to the Apple Store intent on replacing my PowerBook G4 with that new MacBook Pro. Two minutes with the high-gloss screen did it - I walked out without one, loving my old PowerBook.
Keep deleting those insulting off-target comments. Thank you again for your blog.
Harry
Hey Scott,
I really liked your review about the MBP because I felt like I was not the only one experiencing those problems. Other than you I found the screen also horrible and that’s why I sold it again and went back to use my old matt MBP.
I always value your opinion because you have that teaching mentality where you try to pass on your knowledge, which I highly appreciate. In opposite to the haters I understand that through your complaint Apple will rather react and adjust their products.
I guess all the haters are blinded by the gloss of the screen that’s why they don’t see the minor things that need to be improved. Although I’m an Apple user myself I would never be afraid to admit that Apple has bugs or issues that need to be solved. I just think those haters think not rational. They should admit that Apple is also making mistakes.
Whatever you do….remember don’t let the haters bring you down.
Take care,
Alex
ps: the e-mail is real
I use a mac and a pc, so I’m destined for some sort of purgatory apparently. Each computer serves its purpose and as long as we can get them to do what we need shouldn’t that keep us happy? I found your site a while ago when I discovered LR Killer tips, both most useful places and I thank you for providing everything you have (plus I’ve just got hold of PS CS4 and hunting out a book to help with all the new bits its got!). I can’t help but agree with everyone else; an honest review is far better than a half-baked effort. If something is great, fantastic, if its got a few niggles, let us know! Someone might have even found a neat trick to solve certain problems. I’m quite shocked by the reactions of others immature and inappropriate comments, unable to face and deal with their own inadequacies perhaps? Oh well, I found something that sort of sums it up (author unknown):

Well…you got your matte screen for the new 17″ Macbook Pro. I am ready to go 100% Mac. I currently have the black Macbook (almost 3 years old and still humming great) but do my main editing work on a PC (Dell XPS) which I am ready to throw off my roof. I have been waiting until the Keynote to make my purchase to replace the Dell. I was secretly hoping for the Vidia graphic card to be included on the iMac 24″. The plan was to replace my unit with the iMac 24″ but after chating with the fine, fine, people over at Apple, I’m thinking a 17″ Macbook Pro with 4 gigs of Ram and the Cinema display. It almost seems too good to be true that I can have my cake and eat it too…the ability to have my “desktop” mobile and then dock it at home with the Cinema Display. It’s a huge price difference then what I was planning on but I figure I’ve lost about a year’s worth of my time fiddeling around with all the crap on my PC that slows it down soooooooo much and has made me almost bald pulling my hair out! I hope I’m making the right decision….I don’t do video work…just photo editing with Raw…so I figure this machine should be powerful enough with the 4 gigs…any advice on upgrades or add-ons to this machine before I press PAY later today would be much appreciated…I’m off to throw another log in my Florida Fireplace and GO GATORS!!!!!
Cheers,
Laurel
Great! Thank you very much! I always wanted to write in my blog something like that. Can I take part of your post to my site? Of course, I will add backlink? Regards
