Well...you got your matte screen for the new 17" Macbook Pro. I am ready to go 100% Mac. I currently have the black Macbook (almost 3 years old and still humming great) but do my main editing work on a PC (Dell XPS) which I am ready to throw off my roof. I have been waiting until the Keynote to make my purchase to replace the Dell. I was secretly hoping for the Vidia graphic card to be included on the iMac 24". The plan was to replace my unit with the iMac 24" but after chating with the fine, fine, people over at Apple, I'm thinking a 17" Macbook Pro with 4 gigs of Ram and the Cinema display. It almost seems too good to be true that I can have my cake and eat it too...the ability to have my "desktop" mobile and then dock it at home with the Cinema Display. It's a huge price difference then what I was planning on but I figure I've lost about a year's worth of my time fiddeling around with all the crap on my PC that slows it down soooooooo much and has made me almost bald pulling my hair out! I hope I'm making the right decision....I don't do video work...just photo editing with Raw...so I figure this machine should be powerful enough with the 4 gigs...any advice on upgrades or add-ons to this machine before I press PAY later today would be much appreciated...I'm off to throw another log in my Florida Fireplace and GO GATORS!!!!!

Cheers,
Laurel

I use a mac and a pc, so I'm destined for some sort of purgatory apparently. Each computer serves its purpose and as long as we can get them to do what we need shouldn't that keep us happy? I found your site a while ago when I discovered LR Killer tips, both most useful places and I thank you for providing everything you have (plus I've just got hold of PS CS4 and hunting out a book to help with all the new bits its got!). I can't help but agree with everyone else; an honest review is far better than a half-baked effort. If something is great, fantastic, if its got a few niggles, let us know! Someone might have even found a neat trick to solve certain problems. I'm quite shocked by the reactions of others immature and inappropriate comments, unable to face and deal with their own inadequacies perhaps? Oh well, I found something that sort of sums it up (author unknown):

Hey Scott,
I really liked your review about the MBP because I felt like I was not the only one experiencing those problems. Other than you I found the screen also horrible and that’s why I sold it again and went back to use my old matt MBP.
I always value your opinion because you have that teaching mentality where you try to pass on your knowledge, which I highly appreciate. In opposite to the haters I understand that through your complaint Apple will rather react and adjust their products.
I guess all the haters are blinded by the gloss of the screen that’s why they don’t see the minor things that need to be improved. Although I’m an Apple user myself I would never be afraid to admit that Apple has bugs or issues that need to be solved. I just think those haters think not rational. They should admit that Apple is also making mistakes.
Whatever you do….remember don’t let the haters bring you down.

Take care,
Alex

Scott,

I appreciate your approach to this blog and your honest take on the products you use.

I've been an Apple Mac user for almost 20 years now, and won't change anytime soon. But the have a lot of room to improve.

I went to the Apple Store intent on replacing my PowerBook G4 with that new MacBook Pro. Two minutes with the high-gloss screen did it - I walked out without one, loving my old PowerBook.

Keep deleting those insulting off-target comments. Thank you again for your blog.

Scott,

I've been looking forward to this post (which I assumed would be coming after seeing the comments section of your review). I feel now (as I did when I read the review) that you shouldn't have to buy a mouse to make your $2000 laptop useable. I've been curious to hear about someone's experience w/ that new trackpad since they released it. I don't think I would like not having at least one button. Hope they resolve the issue for you (and other users) soon. I'm also looking forward to hearing your print results vs. your new shiny screen. Thanks for the blog. I enjoy reading it!

It makes me REALLY ANGRY to see other sites that are inferior to this one! I DESPISE when other sites are not honest in their assessments of products/software!!!!!!!

Here's another one - why does installing a RAW update from Apple require a reboot? Totally nuts!

I agree with you completely on the hardware calibration. On a Matte screen I can get pretty darn close to my prints, but glossy makes it almost impossible to get an accurate blackpoint. Steve's comment about turning up the brightness to overcome the glare makes that issue even worse. And before someone says it - you can't just put a matte overlay, as the blackpoint is still screwed up.

I will admit though, that I tend to use an external monitor for serious color correction since I can better control the brightness/backlight and individual color channels. Which makes the glossy-only cinema displays even more nuts than the laptops themselves. I expect I'll do rough calibration in the field, then final on the external non-Apple monitor when I get back to the studio.

I've elected to wait for a year for the Nethlam MBP's since I didn't see anything compelling with this version (I have a late 2006 MBP) that would trigger an upgrade. Hopefully Steve will get over his nutty 'you can download HD movies' idea and put blu-ray drives in them. I also expect that they'll support 8GB of RAM, and fix all the ergonomic issues of the current revision.

And if we're lucky, they'll also have a matte screen.

Hi Scott,

When I give my opinion on something, no one seems to care. I would call it an honor to be criticized for my opinions. It shows that you are special and very important!!!

Thanks for all the time you put into educating us.
