Tuesday News Stuff from the Photoshop Insider

Howdy folks, here’s what’s up:
- Nancy Masse, (our in-house copywriter and Baroness of Social Web Marketing), sent me the photo above last week, and when I first looked at it, I didn’t immediately hit me what it was. Then I was like, “Wow…that is so cool!” As impressed as I was with the very clever idea, I was really blown away once I realized that this isn’t something composited together in Photoshop—what you’re seeing is a photo of a set built at full size. That took it over the top for me. This image is now popping up all over the web (it’s totally going viral), and so I had Nancy track down the original source, and here’s what she found: The photo was taken by photographer Anton Ismael, for the Jakarta-based ad agency Bates 141, for their client software-asli.com) and the only thing more impressive than their incredible idea, is the flawless execution. Here’s the link to a flickr page with shots of the set under construction. My hat’s off to the entire production crew, creative director Hendra Lesmono, and art directors Andreas Junus & Irawandahani Karmarga for really coming up with something special.
- Friend of the blog, Syl Arena has a terrific article on high-speed sync when using off-camera flash (which can open a whole new world of daytime flash photography for you). I read the article last night and if you’re into off-camera flash, this article is an absolute must-read. Very well done, and illustrated. Way to go Syl!
- Photoshop Hall-of-Famer Stephen Johnson has two workshops coming up, and if you act quickly you can still snag a seat. His first is called “Fine Art Digital Printing Hands-on,” which runs from December 4-7, 2008 (here’s the link), and then in January he’s doing an on-location workshop called “Death Valley in Winter” from January 31 - Feb 3, 2009 (here’s the link to that one). Stephen teaches for us at Photoshop World, and he’s an amazing teacher, and his workshops always get rave reviews. If you get a chance to spend some time learning from Stephen—you’ll be amazed at where it will take you.
- If you’re out in the LA-area, just a reminder that I’m bringing my “Lightroom 2 Live!” to the Los Angeles Convention Center on December 4, 2008, and it’s already filling up fast, so if you want to go, here’s the link to sign up (or for more details). The seminar is $99 for the full day (includes my step-by-step class workbook), and it’s only $79 if you’re a NAPP member. Hope to see you there!
- Lastly, just a word of thanks to those of you who posted such kind comments yesterday. It means more than you know.
That’s it for today. Have a great Tuesday everybody!

Hey Scott, got plans for the weekend? So excited you want it to be Thursday already?
Hey Scott. I think you mean “Tuesday News Stuff” not Thursday News Stuff
That picture is cool. I wounder if someone could make a real PS skin that looked like that.

YOU ARE STILL A VERY NICE PERSON WHATEVER DAY IT IS.
Soooo many people, including myself, have all wondered how Scott can do it all. He’s an amazing author and trainer and photographer who does more in a week than most people do in a couple months!
It seems that he has tipped his hand and given away a little bit of his secret with today’s blog post. That’s right. Scott lives 2 days in the future.
As Scott’s blog editor (living only 15 minutes in the future myself) it sometimes takes me a little bit to catch blog typos that give away his secret, but alas, by 5:30am eastern I have changed the headline so it accurately reads “Tuesday” now.
Scott and I would appreciate if you keep this revelation as “our little secret” and simply enjoy your “Thursday/Tuesday.”
Scott, what is so special about the photo you show of an image that is some set-up for measuring some canvas on a desk?
You say : “Then I was like, “Wow…that is so cool!†As impressed as I was with the very clever idea, I was really blown away…”
I don’t get it? What i so photographically enticing or visually important or even interesting about this image?
I believe this is one of the limitations of all digital photography: anything you shoot becomes : “that is so cool”. Look at me, or look at my image. I can push a button also.
Wow, This seems like one of those Ph.D cameras- “Push here, Dummy”.
I have no idea what attracted your educated eye to this image? What mystery did I fail to see?
Please clue me in to your secret of what is so cool about this arbitrary photo of objects someone put together, and then made a photo of.
I don’t want to be let out of now knowing why the photo you posted here is “so cool?.
Jaket,
Take a closer look… It’s the Photoshop desktop interface.
Pretty neat, huh?
=)
Please bring your Lightroom Live tour to North Carolina. I know that both you an Matt will be running seminars next year and I hope that the extra bandwidth will help you cover some more out of the way areas.
Jaket, See if you see a resemblance here:

That is very cool… some friends of mine did something like that back in college but that was about ten years ago… This one is much better.

Shout out to Nancy - woohoo! Great find! Don’t forget to follow NAPP_News on Twitter! That’s a great set.
When I pulled up your blog (as I do religiously monday through friday) and I saw that image my first thought wasn’t “wow, that is so cool.” It was more along the lines of “HOLY $#@&! I didn’t know CS4 was SKINNABLE!” I must say the whole thing was very well executed.
This is my first post, but I have been lurking for a LONG time. I just wanted to thank you for all you do! I am a Canon shooter and I hate Apple, but I am a huge fan of your blog and books (I own five). Kelby Training is next on my list and I eagerly await the day when you make an appearance in San Diego. I work in healthcare and I often find myself thinking “Boy, Scott Kelby must sleep as infrequently as I do!”
Keep up the great work!
-Kyle
All right, Tell us where we can buy the poster!!!
Hey Scott
When are you bringing your shows up to Canada, buddy?
I think the image is inspiring! It’s great to see creatives thinking outside the box! Oh, and Scott….when you in the UK next?…we could do with some LR or CS4 training over here too!
Scott, I am so glad NAPP_News Nancy is getting some notice on your blog. She is one of the best, and sweetest people I have ever met. I know have my own photoshop blog from a newbie stand point because of her. Nancy is encourgament, a support system, a fountain of informaion all rolled up into one. She is a gem and twitter and us followers are better people, designers, photoghapers because of her. She has such lovely links that she shares with us on a daily basis. If she doesn’t know something she will find the anwsers for us. However, I am sure you already know that Nancy is one of NAPPs best resources. Thank you so much for sharing her talents with the rest of us. And Nancy, if you read this. Thank your mother and father for me. For raising such a great woman. I think you ROCK hun!
Eep! I am blushing to the tips of my toes!
Thanks Mitz. =)
… and I can safely say “Ditto!” what you said for everyone who works with me at NAPP HQ. I’ve been looking for a creative team like this my whole life and a special “Thanks!” to Scott for the opportunity.
I echo @mitzs comments about Nancy, but then I could go on about LeAnn & Annie too. The only other company I know that has employees who really appreciate their employer as much is Southwest Airlines.
From my first visit to Photoshop World in 2005, I’ve been impressed by the genuine customer service and approachability of NAPP employees. I admire the employee culture you’ve been able to create, it speaks to you as a leader, and the talented staff working with you.
Close… but not close enough. I’m glad you’re making it over to the West Coast. But how about heading up towards the Seattle area?
I love the poster. I saw it a few days ago… can’t remember where, maybe on Nack’s site. Anyway, my first thought was amazement, I was thinking maybe it was a “skin” too.
As always, thanks for all you do!
Please bring the Lightroom 2 tour to Denver. People do use Lightroom in cities besides Dallas and Los Angeles.
Hey Scott,
I couldn’t find an e-mail for you, but I found this cool lense thing that let’s you take photos at a 90 angle from you so they think you are shooting someone else! What do you think? Do you think the quality is okay because it looks like a great idea!!!!????

Like Jaket I wasn’t impressed until some one said it’s the PS desk top. Duh. It is rather cleaver and well executed.
Suzan
Very clever photo! And a shoutout to Nancy and her expert (and most entertaining!) represention of @NAPP_News on Twitter!!
