Lots of Book News (and what I’m working on next)
Before we get to the book news, a big thanks to Dano for just an excellent post yesterday, and really inspired a lot of us, informed, and let us enjoy some very cool photography. Thanks Dano! Now, onto the book news:

I’ve finished writing the update to my book, “The Photoshop CS4 Book for Digital Photographers” and it’s in the final stages of production now. My publisher is working to get it out in time for the holidays, so keep your fingers crossed, but we should see it next month. Besides updating it for all the new CS4 stuff (including Camera Raw, the CS4 Bridge, and all the other goodies), I also included an entirely new chapter on processing HDR (High Dynamic Range) photos, in which I included a small section on using Photomatix Pro. You can preorder the book now at Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble.com.

This year Amazon put together a list of 10 books that would make great holiday gifts, and I’m honored that they included my book (co-authored with the amazing Terry White), ‘The iPhone Book” in their top-10 list, as seen above. What I thought was particularly cool, the list isn’t just tech books or computer books, it’s on the top 10 list of ALL books on Amazon. Here’s the link to pick up a copy as a holiday gift.

The next book I’m working on after the first of the year is “Photoshop CS4 Down & Dirty Tricks.” This was the book that started it all for me, but the last one I released was from back at Photoshop CS (other books kept pushing it back), but this time I’ve set aside time to do it, and it is my very next Photoshop Book for sure, due for release in February. You can preorder it from Amazon.com (they’ve got it for only $29.69) or Barnes & Noble.com.

I learned earlier this week that Amazon has released their Editor’s Choice, and Customer Choice awards for 2008, and I’m just thrilled that two of my books (and one that I edited) made their Best Books of 2008 list:
- My book, The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2 was the #1 Customer Favorite (based on sales for books published in 2008), of all arts and photography books.
- Amazon’s Editors chose my book, The Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers as one of their Editors’ Picks in their Top 10 Books of 2008, taking the #3 spot.
I was also equally as thrilled to learn that Joe McNally’s The Moment it Clicks was the #2 bestselling Photography book of the year (Way to go Joe, ya mook!), and when Joe learned of the news, he did a post on his blog (here’s the link), and in his post, Joe said (in his Brooklyn-mobster sort of way), such nice things about me, that it totally displaced the thorough beating I took on Digg.com last week (however, know up front that Joe gave me more credit than is due. The reason that book became a sensation is because of the guy who wrote it, and made those amazing images; Joe McNally).
Anyway, thanks so much to my readers, for making my book #1, and to Amazon’s Editors for your gracious recognition, and to Joe for being such a Mensch. What a great way to end the year!

More news from Amazon: They are doing a special VERY Limited Edition Boxed Set of my Digital Photography Books, where you get both Volumes 1 & 2, and a hand-signed 8×10″ print (yes, I signed every one myself, and MPIX did all the printing, and did a wonderful job). This is only available through Amazon, and since it is a limited edition box set for the holidays, once its gone—that’s it. Here’s the direct link to this special limited edition package.

Well, you knew it was coming, right? After Photoshop CS4 Down & Dirty Tricks, I’m going to release, The Digital Photography Book, Volume 3. Again, this book will pick up right where Volume 2 left off, and I’ve got lots of cool new stuff to share, new tricks, and new ideas, and I’m so excited about what I have to share, that I kinda wish it was the next book I was writing (but I promised my publisher is would be Down & Dirty Tricks, and I definitely owe it to my readers who’ve been waiting far too long). I’m thinking this will be an April/May time frame, but more on it as I get closer.

I also just finished the 5th edition of my book, The iPod Book with the help of contributing author Terry White (who co-authored The iPhone Book with me), and that should be in stores either late December or early January.
I’ve got some brand new ideas for books, including a Photoshop book that I think desperately needs to be written (based on what I’ve heard during the past year while I’ve been out teaching), but I can’t tip my hand on that one quite yet, but it will be a summertime release.
That’s it for this exhaustive book update. Thanks so all of you who support my book-writing, and to my book Publisher Peachpit Press, my Editor at Peachpit Ted Waitt, everyone at New Riders Publishing, and my in-house book production and editing team (Kim, Cindy, Jessica, Felix, Damstra and friends) who help make this all happen. 2008 was a banner year for us, and I can’t wait to show you what’s new in 2009. Stay tuned!

An update to the 7point systems in the works, based on LR2.1 and CS4?
”I’m going to release, The Digital Photography Book, Volume 3.”
Oh, it will be the next your bestseller! I’m waiting for it.
Wooo, I’m excited that you are releasing DPB: V3!!! That series is by far the best set of photography books out there. I’ve ordered other books and have been somewhat disappointed in them. As long as you keep writing DPB volumes, I will keep buying them.
I pre ordered the CS4 book on Tuesday! I also ordered the LR2 book as well as CS4 Extended and LR2. I can’t wait to start playing with my new toys. Christmas came a little early for me this year.
Dude, when do you sleep? Seriously, as a former journalist turned IT pro turned photographer, I know just how much hard work goes into writing. For you not only to crank out the books, but to crank out QUALITY books is nothing short of amazing. You are my hero.
Scott writes more photography/computer books in a year than I read. Sheesh.
Looking forward to the DP3 release. Now get some rest!
-Bob
(Boston)
My goodness Scott …..
Do you sleep ?
: P
A book writing machine you are!!!!!….
How about the “Scott Kelby book on how I can focus and crank out some quality content on a regular basis…version 1″
(Alright, tiltle’s kinda lame, I know)
You are a true inspiration my friend!
btw, looking forward to your take on photomatix. I have been using it for some time now
Are you updating Seven point system for CS4?
Harold
Hi Scott,
I do have a lot of your book. My latest one being the iPhone book. Since we will be teaching CS4 at my college, I’m sure your next books will be added to my collection. I have learned so much since I joined NAPP a couple of years ago that words can’t explain. To that, thank you!
My wife & her mother left OKC for Tampa yesterday. I got a call at their first stop, La Tereseta, I am officially jealous.
Rock on and thanks for everything,
Mike
Dude,
I am now beginning to think I have a man crush on you - seriously.
I’ve been begging for an update to the Down and Dirty book for three version releases. That, coupled with the other great books you’ve teased, make it hard for me to sleep!
Count on me for selling a few hundred books for you. I always do. I train Photography, Photoshop (and the other Adobe products) here in the Carolinas, and guess whose books are my required materials?!?
Keep on keeping on! It’ll be a sad, sad, day whenever you decide to hang it up!
Many blessings Scott,
Chris
Scott…small suggestion…write a book…occassionally…
Set a goal…1 book a month…1 a week…or Go Big…A BOOK A DAY!!!
Keep you focused and all!
The Blurry One
Wow!! I am so excited and looking forward to all of your new books. However, I have to say that I’m most excited about The Digital Photography Book, Volume 3 - as I currently can’t afford the upgrade to CS4. I was inspired by the first 2 volumes and cannot wait for the 3rd. Keep us posted on the release date, so I can go back and read the first two right before the 3rd one hits the shelves. I’m a nerd like that, but your books are truly amazing!!
Scott!!! The Down & Dirty book for PS6 was my first exposure to you and I purchasing the Down and Dirty book for PS7 was my first Kelby book. (I’ve bought quite few since then, ::wink wink!::
I’m so happy to hear there’s finally going to be another one.
I’m also super excited about the Digital Photography vol III.
I’m just waiting for the “Scott Kelby’s Guide to Time Management” book, b/c clearly, you have that one down pat.
Your cup is full of blessing man. Thanks for all that you share with us!
-Mark
Scott you are going to make my wife mad at me because I have to get all of them. Can you do a package deal with all 3 (Down and Dirty , Photographers Hand Book and the Photography CS4 book) for pre-pay?
Also what happened to the Down and Dirty CS 3 from last year?
I have all of them - except that one
I, too, love your books and have quite a few of them. Especially looking forward to part 3 in the digital photography series!! In my paying job, I am the editor of a small weekly newspaper and have to write a few articles every now and then. I dread them. It is not my favorite part of the job and I can be such a procrastinator sometimes!! I don’t know how you get all your writing done but you do a great job! Thanks!
Thanks a lot, Scott. I will now end up spending a couple hundred dollars next year because of this. At least I can give a heads up to my wife so that I might get a couple of these under the Christmas tree this year.
This is what is otherwise known as the Scott Kelby Economic Stimulus Package. Scott just keeps earning the title “The Human Printing Press”. I wonder if he can get me a discount from Amazon on some new bookshelves because I am definitely going to need them.
Well done Scott. When do you ever get a chance to go out shooting? Pitty the box set isn’t available on Amazon.co.uk…
When are you announcing the start of the Scott Kelby Foundation? How else can you hedge the taxes on the well deserved income.from all of the above? Who else will feed all of the under fed photographers with their iPods in the world?
Totally awesome Scott! I use those Digital Photography books all the times and will pre-order Volume 3 as soon as you announce it here. Now, if only someone would write an Aperture 2 book that’s worth buying. Think you could slip one of those in your writing schedule?
Quite simply … ‘How do you do it???’
If ever there was a book you should write it should be something like ‘How to manage your time effectively’ or ‘How to squeeze more hours out of your day’.
Scott … all credit to you!!!!
Thanks for all you do,
Best wishes to you and yours,
Glyn
You’re killing me Scott! April/May until the digiphotobook 3. this is very sad! ANYWAYS, I can’t wait, 5 love your books!
yea the down & dirty book, I’d checked it out a couple of times from our public library.
wow, you’re a writing machine.
I suspect child sweat shops here. No way one person can do this much book writing, no matter how big the pictures in the book are and take up most of the space on the pages. Well, crack the whip on those kids and get them typing faster, we love the books!
And, I can’t believe after all the work you’re doing some still ask when you’re going to get more done
Cheers, -M
Happy Birthday to me!!!!!
What are you doing the rest of the year???
Im thinking he’s got a clone or two stashed away somewhere. Geezzz…
I really look forward to your DPB vol. 3 release in April, wish it would be sooner though, 6 months is a loooooooong time to wait you know.
In the mean time ill be checking out Joe’s new book. Have you had something to do with that one too? lol
Keep’em comming, Scott, love your books.
Wow! Great news.
I’m particulary excited about “The Digital Photography Book, Volume 3″ - I envy those who will get the signed copies of the “Limited Edition Boxed Set” since I already have both books
Keep up the great work Scott.
More books to add to the Scott Kelby shrine.. errrr, uh, I mean bookshelf dedicated to Scott Kelby. Seriously, congrats on the new books and I am looking forward mostly to the The Digital Photography Book, Volume 3 book to round out my collection.
I recently confirmed that I am pregnant, so I’m hoping you include a section about newborn/children photography - hint hint!
Scott,
I am very excited that you are writing “Down & Dirty Tricks CS4.” This was the book that really taught me Photoshop. I’m also looking forward to the new “The Digital Photography Book.” Since I’ve picked up several great tips from that series as well. Now I have a reason to upgrade to CS4, just so I can use your new book when it comes out.
I really don’t know how you do it, but hopefully you keep doing it. Looking forward to what I can learn from your CS4 book (s).
Thanks Scott, you’ve just made the “I Want…” booklist grow.
Can’t wait for Down & Dirty Tricks, CS4 for Photographers but most of all the Photography book volume 3.
I’ve lost count now of how many people have borrowed mine for a read and then bring it back saying they had brought both of them.
Any chance on some tips for posing this time or macro stuff? I know last time you ran a list lots of stuff got added in.
Keep up the good work and amongst that list remember to breathe.
Best Wishes,
Scott
The Down and Dirty book series is what really opened the door to photoshop for me.
looking forward to the new one.
I really wish you would slow down a little bit…I can’t afford to keep buying all this updated software and books for them! LOL! Seriously, you’re amazing.
Scott,
You just made my day…I’m home feeling lousy with a bad cold and thought I’d check your site to see what was new…it was the best news yet to see that Digital Photography 3 will be among your upcoming releases! I love your DP books! They’re full of great tips and I learn something new everytime I read them (kinda like the Bible!). It will definitely be an exercise in patience to wait for it to come out…I hope it will also include some info on HDR photography and what software options can be used for it, as well as info on infrared photography options (filters, software, etc.)
Keep up the great work and be sure to get some rest & time with your precious family!
God bless!
Pauline
Scott, i’m reading all these comments from people who’ve bought/read Photoshop 7 Down & Dirty Tricks, Killer Tips, and others, thinking they’ve followed you for a while. But I have to ask, who out there owns, let alone even knows about, “Macintosh, The Naked Truth”? I’ve got it, and it’s still up in my office, sitting proudly beside my old copies of Mac Design magazine.
Now that’s loyalty.
Can’t wait for the Digital Photography Book Vol.3, the last two are heaven sent!!!
Add me to the list of people saying, “Thank you” and “I don’t know how you do it!”. A friend recently said he thought my photos had improved a lot since I got your books. Thanks for the help.
I have a copy of Macintosh, The Naked Truth sitting somewhere in my office.
One of these days I will need to take a photograph of the Kelby shelf in the office.
I know I don’t have them all since I never picked up any of the elements books or the ipod / iphone stuff but the rest should all be there.
One word! Multiplicity!
Scott dude I think I have purchased more books in the last year than I have my whole life! All but one of them is written by you and that one you edited(moment it clicks). Looking foward to all the updated versions as I have all the previous except down and dirty. Say hi to the copies of you for me. My wife swears your gonna break our bank lol but that’s ok with me.
Just ordered Digital Photography Vols. I & II and Lightroom 2. Did not pre-order CS4 yet because I would like to know if you will be offering a signed copy on your website. Love your work!
Hey Scott;
Here’s another list from the DPS newsletter that lists best selling-recommended books - and there you are again!
Gerry
Digital Photography Books are among the most purchased items by DPS readers and it’s no wonder because there are some fantastic ones on the market at present. Once again Scott Kelby’s Digital Photography Book (volume 1) tops the list - although volume 2 is making some ground on it (it’s a different book to the first not just an update).
Also making it’s first appearance in the list this month are Digital Wedding Photography and Understanding Shutter Speed.
1. The Digital Photography Book
2. Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera
3. The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2
4. The Adobe Photoshop CS3 Book for Digital Photographers
5. The Photographer’s Eye: Composition and Design for Better Digital Photos
6. The Photoshop Elements 6 Book for Digital Photographers
7. Digital Wedding Photography: Capturing Beautiful Memories
8. Layers: The Complete Guide to Photoshop’s Most Powerful Feature
9. The Moment It Clicks: Photography secrets from one of the world’s top shooters
10. Understanding Shutter Speed: Creative Action and Low-Light Photography Beyond 1/125 Second
Scott- have you given any thought to doing a one day promotion with some of your new books like you did with the Lightroom 2.0 book? I’m sure a lot of us don’t mind paying a little extra to help support a worthy cause.
Scott,
You probably already know this, but mpix has the same photo as your limited edition print as an example in their calendar (http://www.mpix.com/Product.aspx/presscalendars). I know you do quite a bit of business with them, so this is probably authorized use, but I figured I’d let you know.
I’m so excited! Off to pre-order…
Hi there! its my first post …
…
For these new books I’m so excited and so sad … Excited for that it’ll be (I’m 100% SURE) the bestseller book AGAIN !!! and sad for that I have to wait till next year Inter. Book Fair in Tehran (Because I live here) to buy them
Please Scott if there is any way to buy these books from Internet for me tell me Please !!! Thanks for your great blog and of course BOOKS
The word “prolific” hardly does you justice. You just added a couple to my wish list. Congrats on the honors–you deserve them.
Hey, Scott!
Since I’m a NAPP member I managed to snag one of the limited edition spiral-bound versions of your Photoshop CS4 book, and it’s already paid me back (in a way). I got one of the best compliments that I could imagine on a landscape photo I’d used your Bridge-Photomatix Pro-Photoshop workflow on. It was simply, “… it looks almost like an HDR…”.
Which is just the look I like most.
~Dave~
