You Guys Asked For It: Our First-Ever Spiral-bound Edition of the CS4 Book For Digitial Photographers

Your ideas really do make a difference! Back a few months ago I asked for your feedback on bolding the keyboard shortcuts in my Lightroom 2 book for Digital Photographers. It turned out to be a big hit with readers, but along with the great feedback, there was also one constant request; for spiral-bound editions of my new books.
We did some research, and learned that the major bookstores absolutely weren’t interested in stocking spiral-bound books, but with the help of with our publisher (New Riders), as a test we went ahead and special-ordered 1,000 copies of my latest book, “The Photoshop CS4 Book for Digital Photographers,” which we’re having spiral-bound at the printer. After these 1,000 spiral-bound copies are gone –that’s it—-they’re gone! You can order yours direct from us (the only place to get these limited-edition spiral-bound versions) by clicking here.Â
Another idea was to include a tear-out keyboard shortcut guide, and although I wasn’t able to get it included in this edition, I am working on an idea moving forward that might work out well for a book I’m doing next year (more as it develops). Anyway, my thanks to all of you for letting me know what you’re looking for, and I hope this spiral bound version winds up being a hit, because I’d love to be able to offer this alternative version for all my new books.

Thanks for the heads up Scott I ordered my today, I’m sure they will go fast
I have pre-ordered your CS4 special edition. Can you please tell me what the expected publication date currently is.
Thanks for doing that, Scott. It is too bad that the book stores do not want to do this.
Remember all, that if you do not get the book ordered before they run out, as Scott has mentioned before, Office Depot will do it dirt cheap. If this book is roughly the same size as the CS3 book, then it will only cost you $3-$4. I have all my Kelby Training books done this way and couldn’t be happier with the results.
Yeeeeaaaaah
SWEEEET! If you look back I was the first to suggest it. Guess I’ll be hav’n to get one.
Scott,
Looking forward to the new book! The spiral binding is a great idea. Now if we could just reduce the price $15 to what Amazon is charging for the pre-release of the standard edition. I know – it’s always something!
Awesome! I too have pre-ordered your CS4 special edition.
Thank you Scott!
That was absolutely amazing…. that it was so early after Scott announced this and I was already buyer 999 — SOLD OUT…. well, just kidding (just like a Scott Kelby paragraph, look for the gotcha)
I just ordered my sprial bound book. YEAH!!!
What a great idea. I usually take any books that need to sit flat open without holding them (computer books, music books, etc.) to Staples and get them spiral bound. It only costs a couple of bucks and is a very quick process. It’s really hard to play piano (or work in Photoshop) when you have to hold the book open with 1 hand!
Thanks Scott, just ordered my spiral bound book. I sure hope this will be a hit because it is a great idea and force the bookstores to reconsider.
Thanks again
Sweet I’ll pass this along as an amendment to my Christmas list to my family (fingers crossed)… As for the shortcuts tear-out, how about a shortcuts sticker sheet so I can put the stickers on the keys on my keyboard? (I know I can get this elsewhere but if it came with the book that would be cool too.. ) [or how about i just learn the shortcuts..

Yea retailers… books that a bit of out the ordinary shape/size/design wise are a challenge to shelve I guess.
Great that you were able to come up with a plan b for distribution.
I gotta remember to take some books to office depot for binding.
Spiral sweetness – thanks Scott! I ordered mine.
Seems there was a bit of a stampede to the server today to order them.
You’ll have to let us know how fast they sell out.
Thanks, Scott….any chance you’ll be autographing these? Think about it……the first Scott Kelby Spiral Bound Edition. Destined for greatness in the Kelby series, for sure!
If you’re like me, you’ve got a bunch of Photoshop books, but they’re big and hard to handle, and NOT spiral bound, and you want them nearby while working, either for reference or to follow along with a project.
I HIGHLY recommend the Phifer Reader book holder. ( http://www.phiferreader.com)
Holds your book at a nice angle for reading, and sturdy clips at the bottom keep it open to any page, but are easy enough to move when you want to turn them… Easily handles my biggest and heaviest PS books…
Also works GREAT for magazines like PhotoshopUser when you want to work through tutorials!
Check it out…

Fedex/Kinkos also does the trim of the spine and insertion of spiral binding for about $4/ book. (You can also combine thinner books at the same time so they share a binding).
Hey Scott;
How about autographing these “special” copies of your new book? That would make them “extra special!” That could further justify the additional cost and make a great Christmas present for loyal fans. Just a thought…
Oh by the way…..How about those Carolina Panthers? They sure wooped-up on your Bucs last night!
All in good fun….

Scott:
It’s shameful the way the book trade abuses authors and creatives. I did the colour plate a few years back for the definitive book on Canadian Butterflies “Butterflies of Canada”. It was published at the University of Toronto Press and something happened to the binding opf the paperback edition. It had to be recalled and converted to spiral binding (not a difficult or costly process, I believe).
In any event, it was very popular and sold out promptly. The spiral binding makes it so much easier to use – it is a desk reference, after all.
They fixed the binding for the second printing, which has been out of print for a few years. But there are still copies on the shelves of many stores.
Go figure!
Hey Scott,
Would you consider signing any of the special edition books?
Another question: do you plan on releasing a book that combines your digital photography book with your lightroom or photoshop book?
I ask this question as I am teaching a combined photoshop and digital photography course to university students next semester. Typically, I have to assign students two books and try to integrate the content as best possible. It would be nice to have a book that integrates digital photography and photoshop. You may even consider an essentials, comprehensive, and advanced version of the book.
Keep up the great work!
Rafic
Rick – thank you for responding to requests. Selfishly, I would like to see your new LR2 book bound the same way.
Scott,
By the way, are you planning an updated version of your 7 Point System book for CS4?
Anyway, I’m preordering your spiral bound version of this book.
Thanks
Andy Klafter
Just great.
I hope we in Europe can order this edition as well.
Regards
Thomas
I think spiral binds are essential for training material. Hopefully, this will catch on with future books.
While I didn’t get the spiral bound edition, I think it’s a neat idea. I’m glad to know that the book in general is coming out soon. I just went on an preordered mine today. Thanks for the heads up!
As soon as I saw it on the site last night I scooped it up! I LOVE the idea of spiral binding! If I bring it to Photoshop World, will you give me your autograph kind sir?
You are a true inspiration for me! Thanks!
Great idea! Just ordered. PLEASE autograph it.
Awesome, about time. It may not look too good for marketing purposes, but it sure is practical for us.
Great idea Scott… if fellow Photoshop Insiders need additional ideas for customization, check out my “special edition” McNally.
Hey Scott, for those of us who ordered the limited edition, an autograph would make it all that more special.
How about as an incentive we can give you hints on how to get the best “eagle picture” !!!!! lol

Just let others know. If you have other books that you want spiral bound, just take them to Stables and get it done for like $5.00. I’ve had two done so far, and it worked well, especially for books like Kelby’s that have a wide inside margin.
I love the idea of spiral bound… I am not ready to upgrade to CS4 yet… but you better believe after reading the tips on this comment page, that I am going to bring my copy of “Photoshop CS3 for digital photographers” to Kinko’s this week to get spiral bound!
Any idea when these are going to start shipping ?
Hi Scott, got a question. I own cs3 photoshop and considering purchasing the newer cs4 photoshop book for digital photographers (or should I just stick with your older book cs3 for dp)?
Hey Scott!
i just got my copy of this book from the NAPP website. I just wanted to ask, in your special website where we can download your sample images. In the site though, it asks for a password to access the special video.
The problem is – i’ve been reading the book and I couldn’t find where you placed the password.
Thanks!
I’ll be posting my comments about the book soon.
Mike
I’m an amateur photography buff who recently purchased Adobe Photoshop
Elements 7. I’ve also recently seen your latest book “The Photoshop CS4 Book for
Digital Photographers” and have the question: Which of your books would best help me better learn how to use Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 software? Also (and I know this is probably going to be a stupid question — but I did say I’m an amateur photography buff — what is CS4)? I absolutely LOVE the fact that you added the spiral bound book! It’s impossible to try to learn to do something new when you’re trying to hold the book open with one hand!
