Holiday Gift Idea: The Lastolite EZYbox Pop-up Softbox For Off-Camera Flash

Time’s running out to get Holiday gifts, so I thought I’d better share a few last minute gift ideas. Here’s a pretty cool one for the photographer on your list who already has an off camera flash (Like a Nikon SB-800 or a Canon 580 EX II). It’s Lastolite’s EZYbox, which is a collapsible softbox that does a really sweet job of softening and spreading the light (in fact, I’m using it on a location shoot tomorrow!).
The EZYbox comes with a flash mount bracket, and once you slide your flash onto its hotshoe, you put your flash through the hole in the back of the softbox (as shown above), and you’re ready to go. There are two things I dig about the EZYbox:
- It folds down really small, as seen in the example photos below, where I think Brad does just a stunning job of showcasing the fold-up process (Notice the graceful hand gestures).
- The light, while soft, doesn’t spread as much as it does with a shoot-through umbrella, giving you a more directed narrower beam (Brad was telling me that McNally loves these and uses them all the time, and if McNally’s uses ‘em, that’s good enough for me).
First, it folds up flat, as seen here

Then in one move it collapses down like a reflector

Then it fits easily in this little blue bag

Anyway, below is a shot of the unit in use, but Brad is supporting the EZYbox using an optional telescoping handle.

The 24″x24″ EZBox sells for $189.00 on B&H Photo (here’s the link). The optional telescoping handle is $39.95 (here’s that link).

Scott you are really almost making me buy something I don’t afford at the moment
But I’ve seen this softbox before and it does look really cool. Might just go on and buy two of those from B&H next month. So do you know whether it’s compatible with 430ex or vivitar 285?
And by the way I really like this new look on your site. It’s nice to be able to browse you photography showcase on the top.
Did you find out if the Lastolite softbox is compatible with the Vivitar strobe?
Great product but I’ve just got my 43′ umbrella
Great new site layout.
Keep up the great work.
Scott and all…as long as we are on the subject of Christmas gifts, I have a question about one of your previous blogs about iphoto books.
I ordered one as a Christmas gift and received it yesterday. It is a really nice product although I was just a bit disappointed that the photos were printed a bit darker than the originals and had an orange-yellow color cast.
My question is whether this is a normal bias of these books and if so, do you or anyone else reading this that is experienced with these have a correction worked out to compensate? Is there a way to soft proof?
I have plans to do several more of these books and I would like to get the prints a bit more spot on.
I can be reached at lesdoerfler at verizon dot net if anyone wants to contact me directly. Thanks in advance.
Oh, and as for the softboxes, Joe McNally used one of these on the portrait of Jake Peterson that was on his site a few weeks ago. As soon as I saw one in action, I bought one. They are great!
Hi Scott,
I love the new look of your blog, especially the photography showcase at the top. I’d love a post on what blog service you use and the cool add-ons. It seems that most photographers, myself included, have their own blogs now.
Kudos on the improvements
Scott is using Wordpress. (as am I) It is a open source blogging package that can be run on almost any provider. (custom theme obviously).
Scott, while there is no requirement from Wordpress to put a link back to their site, I think it is good form to acknowledge any open source project that I am using.
B&H says these are not normally stocked items, anyone order one recently and how long did it take?
@ Sam. I ordered mine from B&H recently ( within the last 3 weeks or so ) and I don’t recall seeing anything about it not being a normally stocked item. I wonder if that is something new. My order arrived in the normal two day turnaround.
Hi Scott,
This looks like a good design. On a recent PhotoShopTV, the Gonzo Holiday Gift Guide episode, Dave Cross showed a similar item except that it was an umbrella that could be expanded into a softbox with a place to insert a flash.
Do you know anything about this other product?
And that is terrific news that your Kenya project fundraiser was so successful!
Thanks.
Jim
Hey Scott,
Merry Christmas! I bought one recently and really like it. My only complaint is the SB-900 won’t fit on the hotshoe. I had to use my SB-800 instead.
BTW, I like the new site layout.
Thanks!
Randy
Hi Randy,
The problem with the SB-900 is the distance between the plastic casing and the bottom plate.
I managed to get my SB-900 fitted on the hotshoe – simply by using sandpaper on the top of the bracket. You should use a fairly coarse grain to start with and then finish it with a fine one.
It’s important you sand it evenly, especially in the middle. Test to see if the flash slides in reguarly, if not – sand off some more. Hope this helps
I did the same thing to my other lastolite flash brackets. It’s really nice to finally be able to use the SB-900 on them.
Have a nice day
Kristian
The EZYBox looks very cool and I’m craving one. Anyone know offhand how many stops of light it consumes?
Site layout is a lot better, I am torn between the smaller lumiquest 3 and the lastolite.
Rich
I have two small softboxes that are very similar to these that I bought from Alzo Digital, and they are 1/3rd the price. I’ve used mine a lot and they really work great!

hey you’re from calgary right? thanks for the info about the alzo thingy saves my wallet from vistek and lastolite
From the top picture, it looks like the flash has a diffuser on while inside the softbox. Is this how you’d normally use it? Or would it be good enough to remove that diffuser and zoom the flash to its widest setting? Just curious. Thanks!
This has nothing to do with lastolite, but I stumbled across this comic and thought it was pretty funny, considering the recent drama relating to the D3X. Ya gotta laugh…

I have both the Lumiquest 3 and the Lastolite EZYBox (large), and love them both.
The EZYBox has two diffuser panels, but you can run with one if you want. I haven’t measured how much light is consumed, though.
I’ve put the Lumiquest 3 up high on a stand when shooting a speech; it worked nicely without being intrusive. Usually, I mount it on my on-camera (bracket) flash for fill.
I look at it as another set of tools — and additional options — not as a replacement for shoot-through umbrellas or larger softboxes (like the Apollo JS).
Geez Scott, why not give one away for Christmas. My address is….
Brad… I didn’t know that you started a modeling career???
If I was going to buy an umbrella, or one of these. (yes, I know it is more expensive) Would you guys recomend this, or just a shoot through umbrella to get started with off camera flash.
I’d get a shoot-through umbrella with removable black backing to start. Versatile, packs up small, and inexpensive.
I don’t know if it’s coincidence, but this is the second product you’ve recommended where the actual B&H price was higher than the price you stated on your blog. In this case, the EZBox is listed on B&H’s site @ 207.95, not $189.00. (The other product with which I noticed this is the Hakuba case you recommended for a strobe kit — which I bought anyway and love, so thanks for the review!). I’ll keep my eye open, but if this happens again, I’m going to refer to it as the “Kelby Effect.”
This really looks great, but I’m wondering how is it different than say shooting a flash through a white umbrella? I’m not trying to be sarcastic, btw.
it is fit with SB900? please advace
Just received my 24″ ezybox kit. It took me less than 10 minutes to set up for the first time. That includes taking everything out of the plastic and disposing of the box it came in. I love this softbox. Got the whole kit with Mark II bracket, tilt bracket, extention arm and mounting bracket from Bhphoto for $338. I’m using the SB600 which I just realized has more power than I thought. The cold shoe fits perfectly. Took some test shots and all I can say is wow. I kept my Stefen omni diffuser on the SB600. This is the perfect tool to take out in the field. The stand is alittle flimsy but that can be fixed. Now I need the diffuser panels to shape the light. I wish all product were made this well. Highly recommended.
