Shooting From the Sidelines at Bucs vs. Raiders

Well, let’s get this out of the way first. We lost. At home. Miserably. To a team that’s only won 4 games all season. We’re out of the playoffs. Our season’s over. Ugh! I don’t want to talk about it. Until next year, of course.
Now, onto the shoot. It was a warm beautiful day (as you might imagine; I had a blast) and I have a quick story to share: It’s very late in the fourth quarter, we’re a touchdown behind with just a minute or two left on the clock. I’m shooting from the sidelines, right near the Buc’s bench, and when one of our receivers drops a pass, I look to the guy standing right next to me, and say something along the lines of, “Oh come on–you gotta catch those–it was right in his hands.” He looks at me and nods in agreement. It was Tiger Woods. I kid you not. I had to step back and grab a couple of shots of him, but I didn’t post any here because it would have ruined the story, as you would have recognized him instantly.
Anyway, after I took the shot, I went over to him and said, “I’m having a problem with my short game. I’m hooding my wedge a bit on my backswing, and I was wondering if you had any tips that might help?” (OK, I didn’t really walk over and say that. I had ya though, didn’t I?). Anyway, it was wild seeing him there (I wish I had noticed him earlier, I probably would have at least said “hi”).
GEAR: All shots were taken with a Nikon D3 with a 200-400mm f/4 lens, or a D300 with a 70-200mm 2.8 VR lens. ISO 200 and wide open (at f/4 and f/2.8 respectively, all day). My thanks to Matt May and the Bucs for giving me such a great day that I can nearly overlook the loss. Nearly. (Click on the thumbnails below for a larger image).
So, here are some of my favorite shots from this heartbreaking, season-ending game (and of course, besides the Bucs needing to win this game, to get in the playoffs the Eagles would have also had to beat Dallas. Of course, they did. Double-ugh!).

Scott,
I loved the Tiger Woods part of this story. It’s crazy how those things just happen some times. Also, great photos. I was surprised to hear you didn’t take anything wider than 70mm, though I suppose you didn’t need it.
The lowly Bucs are not worthy of a playoff appearance. And, pitifully enough, that’s spoken by a Jets fan.
Hello Scott,
I was just wondering, why would you use a 70-200 on a crop body and a 200-400 on a full frame… I mean, those ranges overlap by a big margin in that case? Wouldn’t it be logical to have an effective 70-200 and 300-600 lenses, instead of 105-300 and 200-400?
Scott, maybe your grip on the club is too strong, try weakening it a bit, this should keep the face open on the back swing…ha ha ha.
Sorry about the Bucs, the Pats luck ran out as well.

Hi Scott-
Can you talk a bit about the process that you have to go through to get access like this to events? I’ve tried to get credentials at Indy 500 practice since it’s in my backyard with no luck. I’m not a pro and I don’t work for a magazine, etc. etc…
Thanks,
Mark
Hey Scott,
Great story about Tiger. Double Ugh is right. I love the symbol of the Cowboys just as you do the symbol of the Bucs. Any team other than the Beagles! I sure hope they lose next weekend. Go Giants!
I downloaded my first photo from Operation Photo Rescue yesterday. I spent the afternoon in front of the tv watching the Boys get beat while fixing this image. I made some real progress which was very heart warming while the view on the television was making me sick.
I am so glad that I have offered to help OPR with their task, thanks for the suggestion.
Mike
Hey Scott,
Cheer up … at least your team didn’t loose by a score of 52-21. It was a bad day for the Broncos as well!
. It was a miserable game to watch …
Your shots are Great and thanks for letting us know the equipment you used. That’s always good info. Oh, who’s this Tiger Woods guy?
Gotcha!
Dennis
Hi Scott, I feel your pain.
Bears fan!
Thx, Glenn N
Just a not for you/your tech guys. I noticed that when I clicked on the last image, the one with the helmet, pic 11 the light box script shows different behavior if you are looking at the blog front page, or the individual page. As an artifact I suppose about how the javascript get attached to the images by class name (very nice by the way) it seems to pick up all the images for the page that you are using light box with. So if you are looking at just the one post, you get 11 of 11, but if you are on the blog home page you get 11 of 19, and the next images are of the kids playing soccer. Maybe you don’t care, but thought I would point it out. You can group your “gallerys” together with lightbox when you use the rel attribute, but not sure about how it would work with the method you have going.
I hated to see the Buc’s lose too. But being a Tennessee Vols fan, I’m excited to get Monte Kiffen here in Knoxville that much sooner. Great pics.
HiI Scott
Sorry your Bucks did not make it. There is always next year… I have experience in waiting for next year and it is finally here.
Go Dolphins!!!
Take Care
Frank
Well at least the Bucs (not Bucks Frank) got some great pictures out of yesterday! Gruden must goooo!
I am writing though to ask you if this is something you might consider in future books. I own several of your “training” books and right now am reading Lightroom 2 for Digital Photographers. These books are littered with colored flags, upon each I must write what they are flagging. Wouldn’t it be nice if your publisher would do like text & law books and make each chapter’s edges colored (different colors obviously) and then on the back of the book make a color coded index. This would make these books so much easier to use and put into book shelves. Thanks again – and as we are use to saying here in Tampa – there is always next year. (Kiffin is gone – now go Gruden)
One more thing – I am originally from Oakland but am a Buc’s fan now – but that picture of the Raider’s helmet just struck a chord in my heart. The old Raiders were awesome!!! Thank you for that nice memory.
Don’t feel bad. My home team, the Detroit Lions, were named the worst team in the history of the NFL. 0-16 this year!
What shutter speeds are you shooting to stop the action so well?
I’m so glad to have found your blog and website. Definitely inspirational for a novice like myself!
Thanks,
Gary
Hey Scott let the Bucs know I appreciate the loss to my boys if the rest of the NFL could be so generous I might get to see another super bowl ring in my lifetime. (lol)
Nice photos anyway I envy you for being able to shoot your team like that and it couldn’t happen to a better guy. It’s been a great year for NAPP and photography thanks for all your great teaching and your team @ NAPP.
It could be worse. The Bucs could have lost to the Bengals, and seeing some of the headlines today, it sounds like losing to the Bengals is a great way to lose your job as a head coach.
Great pictures, btw.
Hey Scott,
Just wondering if you can get the info for the gallery and ‘lightbox’ type plugin you’re using on this site. They work great!
What kind of camera was Tiger shooting with?
Scott, what’s the possibility of some sports photography training via Kelby Training?
Scott,
The real question is…… will you be shooting @ the Superbowl that just happens to be in Tampa this year?
HA – Giants FANS here! Even my dog’s name is Eli and he wears a Giants collar and tags. Eli and Payton? What do you think for the superbowl?
Go GIANTS!!
I was wondering if it was possible to see some of the shooting data on the pics.
Shutter speed, ISO and aperture ?
Sorry about the loss.
(Was fun watching my Chargers finally play they I knew they could)
for your photos, to see them larger from the thumbnail, what program are you using, or java script? a little square pops up, and then the photo pops up? i have been looking for that for a while. if you could help out, that would be great.
and your photos are awesome. i need to find some outdoor sports to shoot.
thanks for your time!

It is a variant of lightbox. (javascript tool) There are lots of versions of this out there from lytebox, to thickbox. This version is uses the jQuery javascript library, but they usually base the code off one library or another. Lytebox is a self contained version with no other dependencies. View the source of the page to see what JavaScript files are being used. If you are using blog software, and not a coder, you might want to look for a plug in for your platform.
Im sorry but i cant feel sorry for you I’m a Lions fan, 0-16. But you do take some great photos.
Scott,
I just read through your Digital Photography Book Volume 1 (which I got for Christmas) and after reading this post I’m surprised to learn that you live in the Tampa Bay area, who knew such an amazing photographer lived so close to me! Awesome story about Tiger Woods, and it’s too bad the Bucs lost I really wanted them to go to the playoffs but my Steelers are doing well so I’ll be pulling for them next month. I’m going to be reading Volume 2 soon and start following your blog and Photoshop videos, maybe one day I’ll even bump in to you at a Bucs game or something, keep up the great work!
Scott, fantastic photos. Been listening to your Lightroom advice and ending up getting 2.0. Love it.
Mike
My solution would be somewhat different. ,
