On Friday, I got my hands on McNally’s “The Moment It Clicks” and It’s Even Better Than I Imagined

I saw it–one of the first copies off press of what I truly believe will be the single most important photography book of 2008; Joe McNally’s “The Moment it Clicks.” (Published by New Riders). I have to tell you—I was blown away. I had seen galleys, mock-ups, and proofs, but there’s nothing like seeing “The real deal,” and it was just stunning.

This sounds cliché, but I couldn’t put it down. In fact, I literally took it to lunch with me on Friday (my wife was thrilled, and made some remark about what a fun date she must be if I have to bring a book along when we go to lunch. I did let her look at it though. Believe it or not–it helped). Anyway, it was amazing to see the way his images and real life stories seamlessly wrapped around all the education and the “how to get a shot like this” sections–I’ve just never seen any book like it.

As that one copy make its way around our office on Friday, it made such an impact on everyone who opened it. Joe has done something really special here, and a BIG congratulations to Joe for so willingly sharing his wisdom, his humor, his invaluable insights, his instruction, and some of the most amazing images I’ve ever seen.

I gotta tell ya; if it was just a coffee table photo book, it would be worth it just for the incredible photos alone. If it it was just a book of Joe’s amazing stories, or the “how to get a shot like this” sidebars, or just those little nuggets of photography wisdom he gleaned from a life behind the lens, it would be worth it to get any one of those. But he gave us all four. One foot on the coffee table, and one foot in the classroom. I don’t know how he pulled it off—but he did—in a big way.

NOTE: It usually takes about two weeks between the printer, and the time bookstores get them warehoused and into their system, so we’re still probably around two weeks from seeing them in stock, but you can preorder your copy from Amazon.com or Barnes&Noble.com.

    Morning, Scott.

Question for you per your digital photography book (vol 2). On pg 47, you describe how to use a light meter to take an exposure measurement for a custom exposure using flash/strobes.

I’m an amateur looking to grow in my photographic competencies, and I recently purchased the TD5 spiderlite set-up (Scott Kelby studio kit from B&H) for home studio use. I also got a Sekonic L-358 light meter.

I understand how page 47 relates to measuring exposure from the perspective of a hot shoe flash or strobe, but how do I get exposure measurements for the TD5’s continuous light? Specifically, what settings on the light meter doI use to get the measurement?

Please e-mail me a response if you prefer, but I’d appreciate your help with this question. Thanks for all you do!!

    Sincerely,

    -Ade

Would so love to get this book and I must say that I just hate living in Europe when a book like this goes on sale.

Its damn expensive to get here, and I can see the US price is damn low :(

I too previewed the book in Cape Cod last October at DLWS and I have already pre-ordered 2. One for me and one for my best friend as a belated Christmas gift. BTW Scott, thanks for the tip of the Confessions of a Pioneer Woman Blog - I am not hooked.

    Cheers,

I’ve been looking for pub of this book since you mentioned it awhile ago. Glad to see it’s finally out, and I’ll be adding it to my Amazon wish list. Thanks for giving it a review.

Speaking of books, I received the autographed copy of Digital Photography 2 that you bestowed on me. I completely read through it in about 3 hours - taking in every word - adding sticky tabs to certain pages for future reference or rereads. Let’s just say it’s loaded with stickies. Awesome book. LOVE the format. Easy read. Extemely informative. Thanks again.

    Scott,

SanDisk is having a huge rebate on some of their memory cards right now. I thought it might be of interest to some of your readers especially since you use them yourself. I just picked up 3 for myself.

I look forward to the book hitting the shelves.

Pre-ordered with Kelby Training - a long time ago - can’t wait to get Joe’s book, especially after viewing all of his training on lighting - I couldn’t pull myself away from the computer until it was all done :) Great stuff!! I can’t wait to see his future lessons.

Done with your Digital Photography Book Vol. 2- Ok so when is Vol 3 coming?

Ok - I’ll start with Vol1 again and read them over again -

    Keep the great stuff coming!

Ordered “The Moment it Clicks” and Scott’s new “Digital Photography Volume 2″. Joe’s book was shipped today so I anxiously await it’s arrival!! The reviews have been stellar! I was so impressed with Digital Photography Volume 1 that Volume 2 was a must have. (Actually I won my copy of volume 1 at a NAPP session in Vancouver last summer, and I was so impressed that volume 2 was an easy sell)
Anyways, I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your blog Scott…it must be a lot of work but it’s much appreciated from my side and makes for a great start each day. Keep up the good work.
