Progress Report: The First Month of Kelby Training’s Online Subscription Service

By Scott on Wednesday, January 30th, 2008 at 6:07 am | updates.

kt1.jpg

Now that our newly launched Online Training Subscription Service is one month old, I thought I’d share a quick look at where we’re going and where we’ve been.

Starting From Scratch:
Any time you launch something new like this, you hold your breath. You just do, because no matter how many estimates you’ve compiled, or projections you’ve made, and bandwidth you’ve alloted; and meticulous plans you’ve laid; you just don’t know until you launch.

In our best case scenario, if everything came together just right, we were hoping to have 300 subscribers at the end of our first month. If we somehow hit 500 subscribers by month’s end, it would have been nothing short of an absolute grand slam home run. Here’s what we hadn’t counted on; More than 2,200 subscribers!!!! We are just floored!

The word of mouth from our students has just been incredible, and I’ve been getting email after email from our students raving about their experience, and how over the top they are about this amazing faculty of instructors (I can’t tell you how gratifying it is to hear your stories; how it’s helping you in your careers, and in your passion for creating great images).

This incredible jump start has helped us to move further ahead on a variety of new training projects, and thanks to your response we’ll be announcing a number of new world-class instructors who’ll be joining our faculty, and bringing their talents to you in just the next few months (this has me totally psyched!).

Here’s what we learned:
We wanted this to be a totally immersive learning experience, so our classes are delivered in a large-size, wide-screen video format, and as you might expect—it was just days before we needed to add more servers. Fast! We did, and we’ve heard from many of you that it’s made a big difference, and we’re continuing to enhance and improve the entire delivery process

Although we still have a hiccup here and there, each day they get less and less frequent as we tweak the loads, delivery methods, and bandwidth. It’s a learning process, and we’re learning quickly what works and what doesn’t, so every day the whole experience gets even better.

New Classes Online
Since our initial launch just over a month ago, we’ve been adding a steady stream of new classes, including new online courses from Moose Peterson, Joe McNally, Dan Margulis, Andy Greenwell, and Dave Cross, plus a lot more are on the way (Our next new class goes live tomorrow as we bring gifted artist and instructor John Paul Caponigro’s first new class with us online).

What’s Up Next:
We have a number of classes that are already well into production, from teachers like Vincent Versace, Eddie Tapp, David Ziser, more Joe McNally on location shoots, my new Photoshop Portrait Retouching Techniques class, Katrin Eismann, Rich Harrington, and lots more coming in just the next few weeks! That’s one of the things I’m most excited about; it’s not just about what we have now; it’s about the new classes being added all month long, and all year long.

We Hear Ya
We’ve also been listening to your ideas and suggestions, and we’ve heard from a number of subscribers who have already noticed that new features and enhancements they requested are already being put into place (keep those ideas, and class suggestions coming—we love ‘em!).

The Bottom Line
We just couldn’t be more excited, delighted, and totally focused on this new 24-hour a day teaching opportunity, that is already reaching new students around the world . It’s been an amazing month; one in which we’ve learned a lot, tweaked and enhanced a lot, and both gritted our teeth and jumped for joy, but at the end of the day; it’s just a start. It’s what we do from here on out that will make the difference, and we’re totally committed to bringing you nothing but the best training, from nothing but the best educators on the planet. Period!

That’s why we’re still tweaking, improving, analyzing, adding, and most importantly; listening. Thanks for putting your trust in us, and the amazing team of dedicated educators we’ve assembled. I just can’t wait until you see what we have coming next. I think you’re absolutely going to love it!!! :-)

I have to say that I love the training site. I’ve got more out of it so far than following books.

I appreciate that there are concerns about people ripping off the site, but I’d love to be able to save the tutorials so I can watch them when I’m away from home with no internet access.

How about putting a disc up for sale to people who have watched the entire course? That or a link to download the full video content of a course after completion for a nominal fee?

Despite this minor gripe - thanks for making such a wonderful resource available. I finally think I’m beginning to learn how to improve my photographic output through the “digital darkroom.”

It is always wonderful to have those video clips available via your website, both NAPP and the new training site. Being Deaf myself as well as many other NAPP Deaf members, we are not able to follow through with all of those video clips. It would mean a whole lot difference if you guys could add open captions to those clips. I believe it would also help not just us Deaf community but hearing community too because they can read in English & be able to see how some words are being spelled out. Any chance this might happen?

Other than this, I have enjoyed reading both all of your textbooks as well as this blog very much! You are the KING of the Photoshop world! Smile!

I subscribed for the photography videos and the advanced Photoshop ones.

It will be great to have more photography classes. The ones already there rock.

I would like to see a class by Matt showing how to apply creative looks in Lightroom, something like the presets he’s publishing.

A “BIG FLASH” class would be AWESOME! Learning techniques for outdoor use with such flashes as Elinchrom Ranger, Profoto etc…

Over powering the sun, changing your backgrounds from light to dark, using different attachments for different effects.

Shooting a model portfolio on location with BIG FLASH etc…

Make it happen Mr. Kelby, if anybody can you can.

      Scott,

How about including a couple of really beginner level classes (start at the start) for those of us that are brand new and just trying to find our way around CS3 and Lightroom? Maybe call it “elementary school”. Thanks!

The classes I’ve watched so far have been GREAT! Good job on lining up all the outstanding talent, can’t wait for more.

How’s about a series on basic photography? You know…exposure, composition, shot selection, lens choices, etc.

Keep ‘em coming, NAPP….this 59-year old newb is having the time of his life with this stuff!! :-)

One suggestion from me would be for a review PDF with the last lesson of the series that would give you a little reference.

I’ve taken Moose’s first landscape course and the ability to have a few tips I could print off and take out with me would be really useful. Some things are so simple yet worthwhile like the tip for the tripod legs in water.

One class I’d like to see is on posing people. Not just for fashion but for nice portraits. I’ve read a few books but it doesn’t seem to be getting into the grey cells. Lol.

well Scott and the rest of the crew…it’s fantastic
I learned more in 1 month than reading 5 books at the same time.
      thank you so much !!

This is money well spent!! I love the photography classes and I have to say they have been a tremendous help for me. With any new project there are bound to be hiccups. Over a period of time I have noticed a vast improvement in the videos. Thanks to the staff for addressing these earlier issues & delivering a quality product. Knowledge is power and there is plenty in these videos!

I’d like to second two ideas already posted: (1) it would be great to have a two page PDF tips sheet that summarizes what was on the videos as a take-away, available to those who have watched all video segments; (2) I travel often for work and I’d love to be able to watch a segments of video on the plane ride.

Both of the above should be secured to paying subscribers. Digital rights technology must be out there to time stamp the content. Hopefully you can make it happen!

      Cheers!

I think the classes are great, but I’m a graphic designer and not a photographer (though my fiancé is a photographer, so he’s loving life!). Will there be more classes on the other elements of CS3 - Flash, Dreamweaver, InDesign and Illustrator? I know there are a few now, but more would be great!

      Thanks for the great work!

      Scott,

I’m a newbee to this photography game and have been reading a bunch of your books and learning a lot along the way.. I haven’t signed up for the site yet because I’m worried it will be too advanced for me.

If there was an “elementary school” section for cs3 lightroom etc.. as well as for photography then I would sign up in a second.

The classes ROCK - Just an idea. What about a class on setting up a photography business/studio from your home. I am interested in learning how to price photos, how to make books, create cards, collages, etc. I am amazed at all the “at home” moms that have started successful photography studios at home.

      Cheers,

I second the thought on setting up a class that addresses the business side of things for newcomers to photography, home photography studio 101 tips and gotchas, and all things that pertain to running a photography business from the ground up.

      Cheers,

      -Ade

P.S. - i know you’re a busy man, Scott but I REALLY would appreciate you responding in some form of fashion to my question about your digital photography vol 2 book that I posed over the last 2 days on this site. The question pertains to how to effectively use a light meter with a continuous lighting system such as the TD5 spiderlites with the daylight-balanced bulbs.

      Hey There Scott -
Wow - I checked out a bunch of the classes last week, and subscribed this week. The classes absolutely ROCK and surpass anything that is out there. Way to go!
OK - I’m admitting that the site is actually replacing some tv time here (except of course for the 10:30pm Tues. Fox Photoshop Guys (yay CA time)

      Wish List:
A class or classes totally devoted to Lightroom. I use LR - but keep falling back into Bridge and my old work flow - need to have something to push me more into LR.

      Keep up the great work!

      Cathy

I love the idea someone posted about a PDF review at the end of the classes.

      Scott,

I will be ready to subscribe as soon as you do the following in some form. Make it so if you buy and Apple TV that there will be some kind of Apple TV plug in for Kelby Training. That way you can also watch it from Apple TV on your TV instead of having to be stuck on a chair in-front of the computer. Right now I don’t have an Apple TV, when you make your training available through it somehow which I’m sure you will be able to, I will get that Apple TV plus subscribe to your training. Also if you can make a version that plays on the iPod/iPhone with some kind of DRM that only works from the subscribers iTunes library that will be a good thing too. Please get rolling on the Apple TV idea.

A student ID for training would be nice for Us that can’t afford the full suite. I can only dream of using some of the Adobe programs besides PhotoShop Extended …. I’m retired with a fix budget … Adobe has opened up a hole new world for me … The training is great …..

The painting class is great but kinda useless because she teaches with brushes that aren’t available in Corel. Is there a way the brushes can be added to the course or that we could buy them without having to buy her entire DVD?

      I love this educational tool.

      Thanks

      Hi Scott:

This site is absolutely fabulous! I’ve taken most of the photo classes and I’m nearly done with the Photography Studio from Scratch. Thanks for thinking of us “poor” people by mentioning the quality, less expensive brand names of the products for those starting out.

Awsome stuff - can’t wait to see the new line up!

      Cynthia

PS: Word of mouth - I told a friend of mine about The Photoshop World Seminar in Orlando. She is a Naval photographer stationed in Jacksonville, FL and got the Navy to pay for her to come. She never knew anything about NAPP or your training so I sent her to your website koodos to you - for our government thinking it’s worthwhile to send thier finest to learn from the best. I’m jealous - I couldn’t afford to go this year :(

I want to second the comment from the graphic designer about adding more classes that teach other software in the creative suite, like Dreamweaver and Flash. I’m a graphic designer also (aspiring to be a photographer) and because I already subscribe at Lynda.com I have been holding off on signing up to see if more of these types of classes appear at Kelby Training. I can see now that I just need to subscribe to both because I’m missing out on some great content… but I will still keep my fingers crossed.

I’ve been very busy lately, so,I will be signing up next month .
As we can all see that there’s a lot of videos being recorded and I think it would be fun to take all the errors and have a bloopers video class, I’m sure there are some and we could all use a laugh at the end of the day.
      See you next month.

I agree that the videos are excellent and getting better. I also second having more videos on photography.

Currently I going to each instructor’s classes and viewing all of the videos. At some point I will want to be able to go back and refresh my memory on a particular topic. I did not see on your website or any mention in the Comments concerning having a listing of the videos by major categories (Photography, Photoshop, Lightroom, etc.) and subcategories (Landscape, Portraits, Sharpening, White Balance, Curves, etc,). This would allow me to go back and see all the videos on a particular topic such as landscape photography or sharpenting in PS and LR.

Wow! I live in a very small town and this type of instruction just isn’t offered anywhere near where I live! It is so appreciated and informative. I just love it!! I love the photography instruction. It is nice to learn from the real deal!! There aren’t even assistant opportunities where I live, so this instruction is invaluable to me. Thanks and keep up the good work. You seem to have a lot going on and I am sure you are loving just about every minute of it.

Scott, I am absolutely loving the online training! I signed up the first day and am so glad I did. I’ve been “taking pictures” for years, but have recently caught the “capturing photos” bug and I’m having the time of my life. Little by little, with the help of your books and Kelby Training, my shots are getting better and better.

As someone who never gave a thought to file types and always just shot with jpeg, I’m now a RAW convert and it’s great. (Who knew?) But my newbie self would love for you to explain all the different file types (TIFF, jpeg, DNG, etc.) and when and why to choose each one. Maybe even on one of the PS/LR tips video.

Again, I am so grateful to have you, and all the other great photographers you are working with, to teach me about this amazing, fun world of capturing photos. Blessings to you all.

      Hi,

Love the idea, signed up for a month, video feed is rubbish. I have high speed cable, and it is too painful to watch. 10-15 secs at a time. Am I the only one, is it on my end, or is this a common complaint involving platform or bandwidth issues?
      Thanks.

      Garry,

I have exactly the same viewing problem as you - 10-15 secs at a time, then a loading pause, then another 10 or 15 secs. This is all the way through the videos. I am trying to resolve this via Customer Service, but no luck so far.

The classes look great though, if only I could view them.
