Uncovered a Problem With Your Comments

This past weekend I uncovered a problem with how your comments to specific posts are being handled. I don’t moderate your comments before they are posted (your comments should appear as soon as your write them), however we do have a very necessary spam filter that keeps tons of spam comments from being posted (and yes there are actually thousands caught by that filter each month!).
Anyway, for some reason it has been taking a lot of your legitimate comments and flagging them as spam, and this weekend I was shocked to find that literally hundreds of your comments were “Awaiting Moderation.” Of course, I immediately went and released them all, and we’re working on a fix, but in the meantime I wanted to apologize for your comments being delayed. Your comments are very important to me (I read each and every one), and to the community we’ve built here, so thanks for your patience as we get this worked out.
Until we do have this worked out, I’ll be checking the list numerous times each day to make sure your comments do get posted.
All my best,
-Scott

I was actually thinking about it. My last comment also gave me that message “Awaiting Moderation”. I checked after hours also, still it said the same.
It’s good that you have figured that out now!
Hah, that’s why! I had been surprised to see one of mine hanging in there indefinitely, while others which were saying more or less the same had been published afterwards. I eventually figured you probably just didn’t like me
Thanks Scott, thought I had done something wrong the other day. Thanks for correcting the fault. I appreciate your honesty you gotta love technology today.
Many regards
Rich
Wow Scott, it takes a lot of bottle to just let comments be published straight to your site without your moderation. On my blog I have a spam filter plugin but still 30% of the comments are spam that pass the filter so I insist on moderating each one personally. I am sure if you did that on this site though, you might never get any sleep at all!
Much Respect
Hi Scott,
Just wanted to draw your attention to this amazing picture captured over a period of 6 months using only a pinhole camera. – Truly breathtaking.
Wishing you a very happy 2009
My apologies Scott, I didn’t leave the link.

Happy to hear it was technical and not something I said.
I had this problem with a client’s web site. Akismet can be a major pain.
Thanks for the extra effort!
Thought you would like this week’s interview Scott.

Happy New Year Scott and please send it to the Kelby Family from the Bahamas.
I have that same issue with spam I am getting tired of it.
I have someone working on a way to stop it; when if they get it figured out I will let you know.

Thanks Scott, big fan but new to Elements 7. I have your book Elements 6 and I am having some trouble with glare on eye glasses. In your book you fix this issue with another shot of the same subject without his eye glasses on. I unfortunately do not have that shot, how can I fix the glare on the glasses? Can you help? Thanks for all you offer!
Hi Scott
You must have a lot of energy eh? Wrote over 40 books, being a editor for an amazing magazine, organize seminars and update blogs regularly (and look at everybody’s comments)…I think that’s why you are so successful=)
Happy New Year!
Hi Scott,
My guess is that you are using Askimet to filter your spam? Were the comments that were held in moderation filled with more than one or two links? Those are the ones that I see getting caught up by WordPress and Askimet since most of the spam out there are just filled with links.
If that is the case you could have your web designer / programmer modify WordPress to strip all the links out of comments. So the submission script will just parse out all the HTTP markup and just leave the text of the link itself. That way you and your readers can still see the link but you would have to copy/paste it to the address bar to go to it instead of just clicking on it. Might be a viable solution. I could probably bust out a mod for you pretty quick as it wouldn’t be all that hard.
Happy New Year!
Terry
There is no universal solution. Aksimet a good plug.
Optimal solution: hire a dedicated photography student, who will check and moderate comments on your blog for a small fee =)
I am sure that if you ask old friends subscribers your blog to help you, there will be people who will do it for free.
Wordpress allows users access to the moderation of comments
I don’t know if it just my computer, but the comments have recently had icons that are covering the name of the poster, and often times the first few words of the comment. Does this have something to do with the new layout, or is my browser just being difficult?
