Tuesday Photoshop Insider News Stuff
Jan. 6
1:45 am

Howdy folks—It’s Tuesday—let’s do some news:
- Good news: we tracked down the culprit that was holding back many of your comments (it was a preference setting—basically a checkbox—that was turned on by default when we switched to the newest version of Word Press) and things should be back to normal now. Again, sorry for the delay, but hopefully it’s behind us now. We also tweaked a few things on the blog (thanks to feedback from you guys) like adding a Comments link at the bottom of the post, and adding access to more of the earlier archives (among other things). Thanks to Fred, Mike, Tommy and the gang for continually working to make this blog better and easier to use for everybody.
- My Wifey totally hooked me up—-when I got home from work last night, she handed me a belated Christmas gift—Nikon’s new 50mm f/1.4 lens (shown above–photo courtesy of Nikon). It’s a pricey lens for a 50mm, so I’m glad she bought it for me, because I’m not sure I would have shelled out the dough for it myself (aren’t those the best kind of gifts to get?). Anyway, I’ll give it a mini-review first chance I get to try it out.
- One thing I realized during the comment moderation debacle, is that people are continually posting comments to a post I did last year about getting your advice for how to get people to read the introductions to my books (by the way—if you’ve seen any of my recent books, you’ll see I took your advice). Anyway, it’s my most popular post, and I think people see its name “I need your advice” and then they think, “Oh, Scott gives advice.” So I’ve been getting loads of people posting questions there like, “What camera should I buy?” and “Should I upgrade my version of Photoshop” and “Do I need Lightroom?” and about a hundred other questions. Unfortunately, as much as I’d like to; I just can’t answer all those questions, or I wouldn’t get any work done, or blog posts, or have a family life, etc. To make matters worse; I feel bad about it. I get an email every time somebody posts a comment—even if it’s to a post that’s a year old. So, I had the Web team close comments on that and a few other older posts that people are using as a place to post Photoshop and photography questions, but the guilt was really building up that I couldn’t answer these folks questions. So, thanks for understanding. Now back to the news.
- Dave Cross features Ben Willmore in his popular “Finish the Sentence” feature, over at Dave Cross online, and if you’ve got 60-seconds, jump over and check it out right here.
- A quick thanks and shout-out to the Canon Blogger, for naming my blog one of their “Best 8 of 2008.” Here’s the link to their list.
It’s really late (or early, depending on how you look at it), and I’m beat, so I’m hitting the sack. Hope you all have a great day today, and we’ll see you tomorrow for the first Guest Blog of 2009! See ya then.

Hi Scott!
That lens is magical I can say. My wife also got me one, but for my birthday in december. I’ve been trying it out for a couple of weeks and it is great in sharpness and, of course, in low light. You won’t be disappointed, I promise!
/ Fredrik
Nice Scott. I have the Canon 50mkm 1.4 and I imagine their fairly close. It’s such a great lens. Wide open it’s so sensitive to light and the DOF control and bokah are great.
It’s also a great lens to hook up an extension tube to and use as a macro for those who don’t have one.

Hey Scott,
Thanks for the shout out (hope my hosting can handle it!)…as for the nifty fifty, enjoy it! I made the mistake of selling my Canon equivalent and have regretted it ever since - need to get that back somehow….hmmm!
What a coincidence, Scott. I just received my Nikon 50mm f1.8 in the mail yesterday! All I can say is, what a sweet lens for the money you pay. This (or the f1.4) should be a required lens in any camera bag.
Hey Scott,
I have the f/1.4 50mm Canon and it rocks. I’m quite sure you will like the new lens. This is an excellent lens for basketball. I am a bit curious about the extension tube that seim effects talks about above. Could you elaborate on that a bit when you do your review. Even if it’s nothing more than letting a novice know what the heck it is.
Mike
I just put that lens on my camera (D100) today and was horribly disappointed. Surely it was a fluke! It focused WAY slower than my 50, 35, and 85mm D lenses. I thought, maybe it is something funny with AF-S lenses and my older camera (though that did not seem to make any sense to me). I tried it on a D300 there in the shop and it was exactly the same. I am not just complaining, it was seriously slow. Now, I am really keen to see what you say and to try another one out for myself.
I noticed the manual focus provided a lot of resistance too; it felt like an old manual focus lens. I have not shot many AF-S lenses, so I do not really know what it was supposed to feel like, but maybe that one lens was physically slower…as in, it was dirty or something like that. I am very much hoping you will report differently.
Can’t wait to read your review on this lens. I currently shoot Olympus, and there’s not really an equivalent (well, there is, but it’s f/2.0). I’ve read about everything I can on the Nikon version, and it’s one of the reasons why I’m probably going to be switching to Nikon in the near future (that and the d700’s ability to shoot in the near-dark). I do a lot of portrait work, and I’m thinking that this lens and the 85mm f/1.8 will be exactly what I will need.
Scott is that the new Nikon 50mm VR lens I’ve been hearing so much about? Can’t wait to read your review.
Keep up the great work!
You will love your 50mm. I got one a few weeks ago and loved it. Loved it that is until I decided to drop it in India last week. With some luck, Nikon can do their magic and fix it for me.
Some words of advice: don’t drop it. Very sad when you do!
I am really interested if you find the lens worth the extra cash.
The difference between the 50 1.8 and the new 50 1.4 is about $300 I believe.
Does the silent wave motor and extra stop justify the much higher price.
(yes I want you to justify it so I can start thinking about getting it, but the 50 1.8 has been a great low light lens)
Thanks
I have the new Nikon 50mm 1.4G and it is a nice lens, but I don’t think it is worth the extra money over the 1.4D model. I don’t find it to be any sharper in the center of the frame (on my D300) wide open or even stopped down to 5.6. I didn’t spend much time at the edges of the frame since I use this primarily as a portrait lens. Consequently, my lens is going back and I’ll apply the money on some other piece of glass.
Pros:
The ability to manual focus without flipping any switches
Quieter focusing
Cons:
More expensive (by quite a bit)
More barrel distortion than other Nikon 50’s
Odd filter size (for Nikon anyway)
You’re stoked! I have the Canon 1.4 50mm and I love it—it’s my favorite lens, tack sharp images. Have fun with it Scott!
Scott, You know Larry can build you a VR sticker for that lens right? Sorry, I tried to pass, I just couldn’t.
Brett, Can you help a newbie out? What is the difference in the “G” model and the “D” model lens?
I got one a week before Christmas and have been shooting almost exclusively with it since; my other lenses are just in the bag. I love it … (note: I mostly do children indoors, and the shadow and light are a lot better than I get bouncing the SB-400 off the ceiling; the ability to really blur the background indoors is also spectacular). I have no idea if it’s better optically than the 50mm f1/4D it replaced, but I’ve got a D40 so the af-s is really important, and it focus fast enough. I keep a Hoya Super HMC UV(0) filter on it.
Hey Scott, Can you tell me the difference between CS4 and CS3 and do you like it. I ordered the CS3, (which I took a course on and I have your book) they sent me CS4. I can return it but wanted to ask you first, especially since I got it for $179.00.
Thanks!
p.s. your book helped me a lot more than the course I took!
I must say this lens is stellar as well. The AF isn’t magic (like the 24-70mm) and doesn’t quite focus on anything but the center unless you use one of the fixed AF sensors using the mode switch. Otherwise I’ve been getting stunning shots. Having the AF-S G mount has made quite the difference over the D lens. I haven’t had it very long, but my first few have been great.

And Scott, I love your PSI podcast and read two of your books on digital photography — just never commented much on your blog. Please keep it up! Cheers.
Dear Scott,
I would like to give you belated Christmas present. I am sending pictures
from Slovak photographer Karol Kallay. He is something like Slovak Joe McNally.
He published 42 books with photos till now, next one is coming this year. ( Kafka´s Prague, New York, Mexico, Portraits, …). He is a very universal photographer, he shoots reportage, architecture, portraits, fashion in Paris, Milan, Germany.
He is a member of Billdenberg agency, he works for GEO, Spiegel, Sports…
He speaks five languages. He works 10 hours a day. He is 84 years old and looks
60. Here is the address with pictures from one of his book. I have been working with Karol Kallay as his assistent for 10 years. He likes your books very much and wishes you all the best.
Cheers,
Mano

Deborah: If you want the best of “What’s new in CS4″ go to:
http://www.photoshopuser.com/cs4/
It’s the NAPP learning center for CS4. If you’re still a beginner at Ps, I’m likely to think you won’t find too much of a difference between 3 and 4. If the money’s an issue, I would probably just keep CS3. It may not be the latest and greatest, but it will still serve you well for a year or so.
Scott,
Just a little more on the blog feedback side of things that I didn’t have the chance to comment on the other day. If you click the photo gallery up top four or five times in rapid succession the whole gallery does this funky blinky thing that you probably already know about. And (I have the tenancy to ask for the moon and not really know it. Warning: that’s probably occurring here) I was wondering what it would take to specialize your blog for iphone/ipod. I tried to leave a comment on your blog the other day from my ipod . . . not a very comfortable situation, so, sadly, I gave up. (I didn’t really have much patience either.)
There’s not a lot in it quality wise when you run the Nikkor 50mm 1.8 and 1.4 at f5.6. The 1.8 is on my camera 90% of the time.
I trust you’ll enjoy the 1.4 thought
Regards
Jason
Hey Scott….
Is it just me or have you been using the new 17″ MBP on PhotoshopuserTv for the last few weeks? It sure looks like the same size as the other fellas?
~ Jeff
Really interested in the 50 too, I have the cheap 1.8 and love it! Perhaps the best photo/doller ratio lens I have, or maybe even available for Nikon. But I like the photos so much that I wonder if the old 1.4, or even better the new is worth the money… I am still on the fence here so I look forward to the review.
Scott, Can’t wait to hear your review! I have the 85 f1.4 and it’s by far my favorite lens. Not sure if the 50 will be in my future or not… Thanks and keep up!
I have been reading about the Sigma 50mm 1.4 as well as the Nikon 50mm 1.4 and can’t wait for your review. Please hurry!! Thanks!!!!
