What’s in CS4: Part 2 (of a four part series)

Here’s part two of our four part series on what’s in Photoshop CS4 (see yesterday’s post for some background on why we decided to do this). It was during this segment that Matt, Dave and I realized that our original idea for a single video clip on CS4 was going down the tubes fast. Hope you enjoy it.

You posted the first part again Scott.
It’s part two now
Hey Scott Part 2 only plays if you go to the page with the comments. The front page is playing part 1 again.
You talked about new cameras requiring CS4. But for most new cameras, you can use Adobe’s free DNG converter, convert the RAW files to DNG, and then open them with an older version of Photoshop. It’s a nice workaround for those without CS4 at present.
Well now that I’m here and see Sean Kulowsli’s comment, I can get to part 2. Thanks Sean.
Hey guys, a little of topic, but the soft skin enhancer in Lightroom 2. really rocks.
Just found it the other day……nice job Adobe

You mention that if you have a Canon 5D MK2 that you need CS4 to open and work with raw files…..Is it not possible to upgrade the RAW converter in CS3 and still be able to do this? I am a Nikon shooter with CS4 but have a cousin who is using CS3 and just bought the new 5D. Thanks…
This is going to be a question for Scott, In a recent (better than saying really old) post you use iphoto to make a photo book. You also use lightroom to archive your images. How do you use both iphoto and lightroom together without duplicating your folders?

No. You either need to upgrade to CS4 for the new version of ACR OR convert those files to DNG using the stand-alone free converter, as Dan above pointed out. Then you can use the older version of ACR with the newer camera files. Of course, you don’t have any of the cool new features of ACR 5. Or just get Lightroom 2.0. It supports 5DMK2.
Three cheers for the Photoshop TV Terrific Trio. You guys ROCK. I have to admit that I am one of the folks that asked the question on your blog about why I should consider going to CS4. You’ve given me enough reasons in two installments that I probably don’t need the other two (but I’ll watch them anyway just to be sure the hook is set). I will be upgrading from CS3 Extended to CS4 Extended and also from Lightroom 1 to Lightroom 2 as soon as I can. I’m sure I can convince the spousal unit this is a good thing as well since she and I are both learning Photoshop together. You guys will probably see us in a CS4 class when it comes to Tampa.
By the way, did you know that if you have CS3 Extended you have to upgrade to CS4 Extended? I have not used any of the extended features so I thought I’d save some duckies and just go to regular CS4. I spoke with the folks at Photoshop and no can do. Too bad.
I can’t wait until Thursday …

The new adjustment panel is a HUGE improvement over CS3, especially how it can automatically clip the adjustment layer into the one directly below it.
Hello Scott, Matt & Dave,
Is camara raw 5.2 available in the latest PS Elements?
And does it have the same features?
The budget-minded folks want to know! LOL
Peace,
“Guided by the Ancestors”
George- camera raw 5.2 is available for the latest versions of Elements (version 7 on the PC or version 6 on the Mac), but it is a stripped down version. It only has the basic panel, tone curve and camera calibration panels. No adjustment brush, ND filter, etc. It does however allow you to process raw files from the latest cameras (within its limitations).
Amazing! I thought I was learning a lot about CS4 on my own (while I’m waiting for Scott’s book to come in) but I stopped this video 7 times to check a feature in CS4 I didn’t know about. Just listening doesn’t do it for me, I have to practice. I love that I can listen to/watch two or three times to really understand something. This is a real gift, guys. Thanks!
Ya made me do it. Just upgraded to CS4.
Hi – What resolution do you guys use when capturing screen recordings for videos like this one?
Thanks!
You can open new camera raw files in CS3 if you convert to DNG first, do you not tell the people who ask you that??
